Question Battery drain with watch turned off - Samsung Galaxy Watch 4

Has anyone else seen issues with the watch draining it's battery even when it's turned off.
I have been only using the Watch 4 mainly at the weekends, and using my watch 3 through the week while at work.
I had the watch 4 fully charged up before I had turned it off, 2 days later after turning it back on to check it, I found that the battery had gone done to 15 percent.
So how can it drain the battery when it's turned off?

There were some drainage comments here:

Thanks for the reply, but I had already been through that that and there's no mention of anyone having issues with the watch turned totally off.
I can understand some issues with the battery drain within that thread, and also read that over time the watch battery life does extend over multiple charges, but with the watch being turned off, and with no usage whatsoever, I can not understand how the battery would still drain by the amount it has.

I would suggest manually turning off each component, such as WiFi, BT, sensors, etc. before turning the watch off and check if that makes any difference. If there is an improvement, it would indicate that those components are still powered on even when the watch is supposed to be off. If that is the case, then it could be a few different defects, but you would likely need to contact Samsung for further troubleshooting. You could try resetting the watch in case it is a software/firmware issue preventing a full shutdown, but if that doesn't work, then it is likely a hardware issue.

Extended Battery

Anyone know where to get an extended battery? Thanks.
I can't even find a place to buy a regular battery for the phone. I'm not sure if I would need one, but it would be nice to have. I'm in the habit of charging it the last hour I am at work so no matter what, I'll never run out of battery even if I go somewhere straight from work, but a spare battery is always a good thing to have.
I have a wild guess as to why not.
I noticed this phone battery has the "near field communication" labeling on the BATTERY. The other phone that I'm aware of having NFC, (the galaxy s2) does NOT have this wording on the battery.
Why did I notice this? I randomly read that there is an SD card manufacturer that is putting NFC chip's into their microSD cards, and even some ipod cases are getting NFC chips built into them as well.
I don't know too much about NFC, but with the labeling being on our battery, and not the S2, I kinda think our NFC chip is actually in the battery, and not the phone itself. If an NFC chip can be put into an SD card or case on a phone that never had NFC to begin with, I don't see why it couldn't be put into a battery, especially since one of the terminals might not even be for power, but just for an NFC connection.
That's my theory, I could be wrong!
you're probably right. This is how it is with the Galaxy Nexus, also built by Samsung. I hadn't noticed the label, but I also wasn't looking for it.
I'd be curious to find out what an "extended battery" for this phone would look like. I'd be all for it so long as it kept NFC and didn't bulge out of the back
I'd be interested to find one. Being on a stock rom and standard battery, my battery drops about 5% in five mins just checking Facebook. GPS drains it another percent per min it is in use. Half way thru the day my battery is dead. It really sucks having to carry around a charger. I'm also using juice defender and other tweaks I know to save battery
I'd bet you a waffle cone your screen brightness is set too high.
Forget most of those "battery defender" apps, especially if they are those stupid task killing applications.....a program being in active memory is not necessarily actually doing anything, which means it is not using your battery, and if it gets killed, if the OS needs it open for any reason, it having to be re-opened will just use cpu cycles anyway
I'd agree with most people that using the automatic brightness option is very annoying, it's really sensitive and it also tends to make the screen not be bright enough. Having said that, using any of the many available brightness widgets can be a very good thing.
The stock one is not so bad, personally I've been enjoying powerful control, http://goo.gl/2vZXl but I've had great battery life and easy readability if I use the brightness setting where it looks like a half moon.
If you're outdoors in the bright sun, you'll need the screen to be as bright as possible if you want to read it, but otherwise it's fine. The screen brightness is always the single biggest battery usage factor.
Personally I've always disabled the haptic feedback as I think it's annoying and I'm sure that using vibrating alerts is also a huge battery drain.

My screen brightness is at zero without automatic brightness on, and im not using haptic feedback. The phone battery is fine if its just sitting over night, but as soon as I turn on GPS to use maps for 5 mins or to check facebook the battery just drops a % every min. So i guess the phone is fine if Im not using it, but then whats the point?
You're exaggerating.
I've never had a phone battery drop 1% per minute.
Look man, I just spent 5 minutes playing music at max volume, while getting directions to 8 different places in google maps, sent two emails, downloaded a new app from the market, and received one text message.
Battery level after all this? Still at 100%. Does that mean I can do this an unlimited number of times? No, it does not.
Frankly, I don't believe you. I've used this phone, and my previous phone for playing movies at full screen brightness with the audio being played through bluetooth to my stereo headsets. Does it effect the battery status? You bet it does.
Two weeks ago when I last played a snes game on my phone I did so at full screen brightness over bluetooth to a ps3 controller. When I wasn't playing the game I was sending or receiving text messages and had vibrate on. I played super metroid from the very beginning to almost through the end of the game. When I play snes games on my phone I tend to use quick save and quick load and frame skipping very commonly, effectively letting me do things "perfectly" but this is a lot of saving and loading and running the game even faster than how it normally is. I started at 2, and the next thing I knew it was 6:00 and I was supposed to meet a friend for dinner at 6:30.
But for crying out loud you are saying you can drain your battery from 100% to zero in less than 2 hours.
I'm calling shenanigans. I don't think you could even do that intentionally, unless you sat there and forced the phone to vibrate the entire time.
Phone batteries don't last for days like they used to. Batteries have not changed too much in the last few years, but the things phones do, and the screens they do them on certainly has. Stop expecting your phone to last over the entire weekend even when you actually use it.

Something to keep in mind:
When this phone hits 100%, it STOPS CHARGING. Even plugged in, it will no longer be drawing power into your battery, yet it'll still be running on battery.
If you plug it in when you go to sleep, it finishes charging within 2 hours, then it goes 6 hours idling on battery power but it still says 100% until you disconnect it. Then, while you're using the phone it'll adjust as you use it until it gets to the right level. This is likely what you're seeing.
If I use my phone from the moment it finishes upping to 100%, I get great battery life. I get great battery life in general and have been happy with the phone.
Of course, this might be a totally different issue where you just got a bum battery. But it's something worth considering.

I don't believe this is true. I hate to constantly be a naysayer in this thread, but this didn't seem logical to me so when my battery went to full, (when the battery is full, unplug charger text showed in the notification bar) I kept it plugged in and set it to play a couple tv episodes on full brightness while I did laundry and made dinner.
Two hours later, I first looked at the battery status while the phone was still plugged in. As expected, it was at 100%.
I unplugged the charger, waited a couple minutes, and checked again.
Still at 100%, which completely makes sense because I've never had a phone that behaved as you've described.
I also would have noticed the battery dying very early, *every single day* because my habit for the last week or so has been to plug the phone in when I go to sleep. I have an app called syncme that pulls files off my computer such as music and video while I'm sleeping, and on average it transfers about 6 gigs of data this way, every single day.
I don't know if you've ever transferred 6 gigs of data on a phone via wifi, but yes, it's not exactly battery power friendly.
My phone's always been 100% battery when I leave for work, just like my last phone was where I also plugged it in at night.
Just saying!

Actually he is pretty close to the way it operates. The way your phone gauges battery life is similar to your car with gas. When the meter reads 100%, it is really more like 98%. When the battery reaches true 100%, the phone will stop charging the battery (but will run off of USB power, not the battery). They do this to account for small variations in the many variables that affect a battery's performance (like temperature). Likewise, your phone will read 0% before the battery is truly completely drained (this is also to protect the battery - they don't like being charged to 100%, nor drained to 0%).
This could also greatly affect your previous test on battery performance. To get a more accurate result, let the phone drain to about 60%, then test the time to drop a percentage point.
What you are talking about is a suggestion that the battery meter doesn't necessarily update it's strength meter all of the time, and you even say that the phone runs off the plugged in power at this point.....

Before you discredit anyones post, you should understand how many battery chargers work, and the importance of them shutting off following a complete charge. Here is a quote regarding Li-ion battery maintenance :
Li-ion cannot absorb overcharge, and when fully charged the charge current must be cut off. A continuous trickle charge would cause plating of metallic lithium, and this could compromise safety. To minimize stress, keep the lithium-ion battery at the 4.20V/cell peak voltage as short a time as possible."
Many chargers have this feature built in to avoid any overheating and/or damage to the cell. I'm not saying this is the case because I have not tested whether the battery charging circuit in this particular phone, or it's charger operate, but I will say that this has been the case in MANY of it predecessors.
That being said, I think an extended battery would be a welcome addition to the options of this phone. Mine too only lasts a day at it's best. Perhaps not 1% a minute...but then again who knows?

poor battery life?

Hi,
I received my gear S2 classic yesterday but I don't seem to be getting the battery life of 2 days. I took it off charge this morning at 11:30 am and it's now 12 noon and it's down to 89%. Is this normal? I've turned off the auto heart rate monitor and NFC and Wifi. It's constantly connected to my note 4 and the brightness is set to 5.
I've had a fair few notifications and haven't really used apps on it today so far but seems to be draining quicker than what I was expecting, just wondering if this is normal or not? I understand it's a small battery but when it's supposed to get 2 days and it doesn't seem like I'd get one day out of it if I was to take it off charge early in the morning like at 8 AM for example.
In 30 min it drained 11%? Seems like a lot. Restart it perhaps? I have wifi off, s voie off, and screen brightness set to 5 as well and it lasts 2+ days. I'd give a couple more days, if it doesn't improve then I would exchange it.

Think it's okay (ish) been off charge now for about 11 and a half hours and it's at 46% though this still is only barely a day of battery life not 2. Should be able to live with it though I normally put my phone on charge at night when I go bed anyway regardless of the charge I have left and I do the same with the S2. Speaking of phone is there anything I can do with it's battery life? Having bluetooth on 24/7 really takes a hit on my battery life on my note 4. Is there anyway I could put it into some kinda low powered bluetooth mode so maybe it's not quite as fast but still some kind of connection?

I had pretty bad battery life with watch connected too. It turned out it was a misbehaving app with bluetooth, GasBuddy in mycase. Uninstalled it and battery life went back to normal. I suspect something similar may be happening in your case.

+1 for the misbehaving app as the likely cause. For comparison: My Classic goes on at 9am and off around 9pm with about 60% left, consistently. Connected with bt...Wifi off and max brightness all day.

That drain seems a little fast to me but not too bad compared to the experience of others posted here.
Usually you'll notice the drain soon after installing troublesome apps, so the offender is likely one of the last few you installed. To fix this I just uninstall the last few apps I downloaded and test from there. If the battery issue is still not resolved after a while of usage, then I uninstall the ones before it. I don't know of any other way to test on the Gear S2 like we do on android phones (e.g. with bbs, wakelock detector, etc.).
The battery life I mentioned for my Classic is with gesture mide turned on, and always-on mode turned off.

Rubbish battery life?

I got an S7 G930F yesterday, first full charge last night, I haven't it even properly set up yet, haven't got most of my apps installed yet. I took it of the charger this morning at 8am its now at 50% at 2pm, 45 mins screen on time with the biggest battery drain being android system 20%.
I have hardly used the phone today as I'm off work, at this rate it'll be dead long before bedtime with me doing nothing.
Any ideas?
Hard to expect getting the best of it at first. It took me a good week to figure out how to optimized battery without having to use it like a 2G phone. I suggest you do factory reset. Observe how it goes that way. For the first time, a handful of things run in the background; syncing, location, whatsoever so I bet it'll take a while to really adapt and I can assure you based on experience, it's like that as it was like for me.

Always takes a few full charge cycles to get the best out of a new battery I find, fully charge and fully discharge 4-5 times, calibrates the phone too to know what 0% and 100% are iirc
But you're always going to see high battery usage setting up a new phone, installing apps, screen on constantly, playing about with it more than you will once you've had it a while
The are wide reports today of crazy bad battery life. Some people are tying it the latest Oculus update.

I'd like to believe that but I didn't have this issue on my Nexus 5X with a smaller battery or Huawei P9 Lite, in fact the P9 Lite also has a 3000mAh battery and I could make it last 2 full days, this won't last 1.
Getting the phone yesterday, you've hardly given it a chance, with heavy usage I get just over a day with mine, with medium, 2 days
Same phone, same OS, same battery
See how you get on in a week or two, or return it and get the Edge, 3600mAh
Check the package disabler pro threads, disable the battery draining bloatware (no root needed)

Yep thats the usage I got with my P9 Lite with the same size battery. I was sitting this morning look at the phones always on display. 30mins of the charger it was at 94% and that's with me not even touching it.
It's crap for the first few days
Whenever I first got my phone or when I factory reset or when I install new rom, the battery life is usually crap. But after a few days when battery optimization kicks in (power saving on apps not used in past few days) battery gets tremendously better.
Posting back to confirm that Oculus update shat on a lot of phones.
Oculus home process kept trying to install and uninstall. This demolished battery life, increased heat, etc.
Once I uninstalled Oculus, all problems went away. I will reinstall after fix.
This may be caused by either the oculus app or good lock app they have been reports on the Internet about these two particular apps
Also when setting the phone for the first time it will drain battery in the first few days
Confirmed about Oculus draining battery

Definitely was, my phone overheated and shut down over night when the update came through. I literally couldn't charge it it with fast charger. it would just sit at the same % it was burning through the battery so quickly. uninstalled sammy vr and oculus apps everything fine now.
I don't have anything oculus related installed. The is day 2, second full charge last night. Of the charger now 1 hour, its got flight mode on with wifi calling enabled. I am currently at 90% with 1 min screen on time. Android services again the biggest hog but it contains IPSec services which does the Wifi Calling part.
I was about to remove Occulus when I received an occulus update, about one hour ago, and it seems that the problem is fixed. The battery looks ok, and the phone is not hot any more. I'm waiting a little bit more to be sure...
Right guys I have found the culprit of my drain issue. Wifi calling. I happened to turn it off and I have gone from 10% drain in an hour to 1%
That's more like it, never used WiFi calling so wouldn't know if it causes drain
EDIT - Not available with my model / carrier
There's a debloat script back in the Development Section which will remove all those trash that came with the phone, as for battery optimaztion This Ultimate Battery Guide is one of the best here in XDA and is a must see for anyone with an android phone basically
Goodluck

Tizen 3.0 battery drain suddenly stopped for me!

Like many, (most?), I got severe battery drain from the Tizen 3.0 update. I did the factory reset that was recommended, but it didn't help, still losing 75-80% during one days use. But this morning, after charging overnight, I power cycled (held power down until it rebooted), and put it back on the charger. It said 100%, but the light was red, so I left it on, probably another half hour, and the light turned green.
Today, I'm back to pre-update battery use! 7am-8pm, and I'm only down 25%. So I should be back to at least 2 day, if not 3 days of use . Hope that helps someone!
I'm going to try this now, and will report back. My battery usage seems to be getting worse, not better.

I have tried all means. Reset, change when off, change when on, but my gear 3 won't charge pass 94%. After 90%, it begins to decline very fast..

Question Overnight battery drain issue

I am totally in love with my GW4 (Classic 46mm Model) as it's my first smartwatch but there is still one thing that bothers me, the unreasonable battery drain overnight. I charged up my watch last night, put the watch on my desk, came back in the morning and saw about 10% battery drain in 8 hours! That's insane considering the fact that I've disabled everything and even enabled battery saver, I thought after all these years I can finally get a full fledged Wear OS smartwatch and be happy with the battery but Wear OS is still the same OS as it was.
I've got the same issue. I thought it was the sleep tracking but I was wrong
And the funny fact is that the battery life is reasonably good when you actually using the watch, but as soon as you put it away it starts to drink juice weirdly, looks like there is no deep sleep kicking in no matter what, even disabling everything and enabling airplane mode.

Which version/size do you have? How many times have you fully charged the watch? I have Classic 46mm. My battery drains 4 -6 % during the night. I have watch on my wrist when I sleep. I always put watch into bedtime mode before I go to bed. I don't disable anything or put on power saving mode. I think the bedtime mode simply turns off notifications and stops watch face from automatically turning on.

Oh sorry for not mentioning it, It's the same as yours classic 46mm. I have the watch for almost 1 week now but I always charge it whenever it gets to 50% so it's a half cycle charge. Do you think I should let it fully discharged and recharge it for a full cycle?
I have the non classic 44mm LTE and I have always used bedtime mode and I've tried nothing all the way to disabling everything and enabling battery saver and still lose quite a bit at night

It seems to me that the battery lasted longer after doing some full cycle charges but I could be wrong. I definitely have seen improvement in battery life since the first few days I had watch. Not sure what it is.

I've got the same issue. I thought it was the sleep tracking but I was wrong

How do you know it was not sleep tracking?
For me, I went to bed yesterday with almost 100% battery. The overnight drain was 15%, flight mode enabled, good night mode enabled and spO2 while sleeping on.
My watch is 40mm, BT modell.
Tonight I will try only the automatic good night mode.
What about Bluetooth when my phone is in airplane mode? Will it consume more battery searching for the device? My wifi will also be disabled in the night...
I am seeing this same thing
13% drain with airplane mode, good night mode, and battery saver modes on.
13-14% drain with battery saver mode and good night mode on.
This is for an 8 hour window.
Using the watch during the day, the battery does seem to last longer and I don't see the drain, even when using it to track workouts and such.
Last night my battery used 11%. I'm not sure what the difference is. I know I have been in the 4-6% range in the past but I always do not pay attention. Possibly related to how fully charged the watch is. Why do we think 10% is bad? I did a search on-line and I have to say that 10% seems very good compared to some other watches. The reality for me as that I'm typically getting 2 days plus on a charge unless I'm heavy on GPS. Currently I'm at 50% and I charged the watch 1 day and 9 hours ago. I came from a GW1 which had significantly more battery time but I'm still very happy with the GW4.
My drain is 20% overnight - despite watch being in bedtime mode.

If your watch is on your desk and turned on, it's constantly searching for your wrist. If you are not wearing it, turn it off.
I have the same issue about battery drain.
I lose between 15-20% each night with everything off (no SpO2, no snoring, etc)
I have the LTE 46 classic model
But based on people and comments I'm guessing the issue comes because I'm not using a Samsung phone and bed time is not synced with the watch and is still "online" all the night
Geez I thought my 3-5 percent drain was horrible. I have the 44mm Bluetooth only model. The first night it drained horrible but I had every sensor on. I noticed I got much better battery after disabling location. I've had mine paired since 7am this morning (it's now 3pm) responding to texts, wifi on and using Spotify on it at 75 percent brightness and it's at 79 percent now. Maybe I got lucky or something? The only sensors I have are the step counter as well as heart rate when resting more than 10 minutes and I never like to use battery saver mode on mine
Second night and I got about 20% drain overnight with everything turned on. I got a similar battery consumption like adj998. Spotify on first place.
I will try do disable GPS tonight and see if anything changes, but I guess it's a normal behaviour. One thing I could try is to turn the spO2 sensor off.
Read somewhere that unlocked ADB is the culprit. So I have unlocked it.
Let me watch how it helps my 20% overnight drain.

Interesting. I'm betting that this drain is related to certain apps as well. When I did my post yesterday about the 11% drain the previous night I noticed the Altimeter app was listed at 4.5%. I immediately uninstalled this app. I had used it once the previous day and apparently it was still using battery. Results: much battery time last night. I would say 3%. In fact, when I looked earlier this morning I still had 41% battery. Yesterday morning I was at 50%. 25 hours and 9% battery used. I have not been very active these last couple days (long days at work). Still putting in about 5,000 steps a day. I have notifications on (gmail, texts, meesenger), use bedtime mode, spO2 sensor off, and do not have watch always on.

Read on Reddit that altimeter drain was a known issue, in earlier models as well.
With people that are having excessive battery drain on their watch: are there any apps which are listed in Wear app -> Watch settings -> Battery that seem like a high percent of battery usage?

Actually yeah, for me it's Spotify. I installed it and connected it to my account but did not use it...
