[2.3.7 and below] Preserve Your Access to Google Apps. By September 2021! - Android General

Ok, quick guide. We don't have so much time left.
It seems that as of September 27, 2021, Google will block GApps (Gmail, Maps...) from old devices that use Android 2.3.7 and below. Basically, you won't be able to log in anymore.
Source: https://support.google.com/android/...ll-not-be-allowed-starting-september-27?hl=en
But I accidentally found this Italian article (https://tecnologia.libero.it/google-blocchera-laccesso-su-alcuni-smartphone-quali-sono-47023/amp) that reports this:
I dispositivi con Android 2.3.7 Gingerbread o anche più vecchi che risulteranno già loggati ad un determinato account dopo il 27 settembre potranno continuare ad utilizzare senza problemi quei servizi e quelle app.
A partire da quella data infatti chi è già autenticato con l’account Google lo rimarrà potenzialmente a vita, o comunque fin quando un reset di fabbrica, un cambio di password dell’account stesso o dei provvedimenti di questo tipo non lo costringeranno ad effettuare nuovamente l’accesso.
Click to collapse
Which means:
Devices running Android 2.3.7 Gingerbread or older that are already logged into a certain account after September 27 will be able to continue using those services and apps without any problems.
From that date, in fact, those who are already authenticated with the Google account will potentially remain so for life, or at least until a factory reset, a change of password of the account itself or measures of this type will not force him to log in again.
Click to collapse
If what is written in this Italian article is true, this means that:
we could continue to use our Google apps until we log out from those apps or until we uninstall those apps!
And it was at this point, that I started thinking of some trick to get around this blockage (by the way, this Italian article was suggested to me by Google itself, checkmate ).
Personally, I haven't tested yet my idea on my device, so I can't assure you it will work, but you can try and let me know in the comments.
Required Downloads (just 1 among the 3)
Titanium Backup (from play store) https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.keramidas.TitaniumBackup
Titanium Backup (from the web) https://www.apkmirror.com/apk/titan...e/titanium-backup-7-0-0-android-apk-download/
Super Backup Restore (from the web) https://www.apkmirror.com/apk/mobil...-sms-contacts-2-1-21-02-android-apk-download/
Guide1) Login to your Gapps before September 27, 2021.
2) Use one of the apps I linked before to fully Backup your Google apps before that date. (this way your logged-in state will be incorporated in the backed-up apps, so don't share these apps with anyone)
All the apk files of the apps should be located in the system/app directory. The list of the apps to backup changes according to you ROM.
3A) If you have a Stock ROM, Backup these:
AccountAndSyncSettings.apk
DefaultContainerService.apk
GoogleBackupTransport.apk
GoogleCalendarSyncAdapter.apk
GoogleContactSyncAdapter.apk
GoogleFeedback.apk
GooglePartnerSetup.apk
GoogleServicesFramework.apk
Gmail.apk
Maps.apk
com.google.android.apps.maps (alternative name that Maps apk could have)
Youtube.apk (useless since it does not work for years)
Vending.apk (it's the play store!)
Phonesky.apk (alternative name that play store apk could have)
These other ones should not be required, but just to be sure...
FOTAKill.apk
Settings.apk
SettingsProvider.apk
if you know other required Google apks, drop a comment so I can update the list
3B) If you have a custom Rom:
find the .zip file that allowed to flash Gapps on your custom ROM
open it with WinRar, 7zip, or equivalent
explore the archive and take notes of all the Gapps apk files (again, they should all be located in system/app).
on your device, use one of the apps I linked before, to fully backup all the Gapps of the list you just made
4) Finishnow every time that you want to format your old Android device or flash a new ROM, you could do that, without the fear to lose your login forever! Cause if you can't login... just restore your backed-up apps!
ConclusionI still hate Google, I still can't understand how they can say "update your 2.3 phone to 3.0", in 2021. I still can't understand how they can say "we do this to push the purchase of new devices", when less than 1% of smartphones use Android 2.3 (according to their data).
My project. Retro AndroidI made many things to make old Android OSs usable nowadays.
I made a guide to develop and backport apps for the old Android versions
I preserved and tested some old emulators and apps
I made an updated ROM for Galaxy Ace and people on the XDA forum went crazy
I'll like to take the Android source code of my updated and usable ROM for the Ace, and release that for any old device
How to support meYou can read this guide on my blog HERE, according to XDA I can't post links only, so I copied everything onto this XDA thread too. Well, now you know have to support me from my blog too

Only 3 days left to the Google lockout! Apply the guide to keep your old smartphones usable!

Hello Broh. Thaks for your job x)
One question please:
I have Samsung ACE GT-S5830D. I WANT to update it so my mother can use it
your guide on "CUSTOMROM" still works? including the problem of blocking by Google
Thankyou x)

Thank you, when I turned on my Galaxy Ace after months, I found that I was logged out from Gmail. (actually I don't remember if I changed my Google password during my months of inactivity on Android 2.3).
Well, I tried to login before the deadline and I wasn't able to do it. It's very strange. For some reason, it seems that Google anticipated the deadline of the login block.
I'm sure that someone at Google has read my guide because I posted it on a Google forum and it was read at least by a moderator. Did I do something wrong with my login? Or do guys at Google didn't like the idea that users could bypass their block and continue using old phones? Who knows!

Hello friend, thanks for writing to me.
It means that with the ace I will not be able to use google services.
Fine, but is it possible to use whatsapp?
that is, if I install your room, will it be able to run whatsapp or will there also be problems?

Facebook decided to shut down WhatsApp for Android 2.3 a couple of months ago... They removed the apk download for 2.3 devices on the Play Store. You can still find WA for Android 2.3 on apkmirror .com and download it, but I'm almost sure it will not be able to connect to the Whatsapp servers. I'll keep using Telegram on 2.3.
Last year I tried to develop a "workaround" app to use Whatsapp web on Android 2.3, but the browser is too old to display the website correctly. First, I should update the 2.3 browser, but I need someone that has experience building Android from source, I have to ask some questions...

Does this work on Magic Sense UI roms?
Cupcake?
This does not seem to work with Cupcake.
D:\android-sdk-windows\tools>adb install "d:\Downloads\Android

I did re-download the latest version of the SDK just to be sure
Additionally, I did not have a build.trout.prop. I made the changes in build.prop.
It says here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=582953) that this will only work in Donut
Now I dont have Google Maps installed
Any chance of this working with 1.5?
Here are the link over in the Dream Development forum that figured it all out
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=583123
big props to canadiancow, brut.all and TAPP for getting it all done
i think you need to be on a donut rom to get it to work
I have the same problem [INSTALL_FAILED_OLDER_SDK] on HoFo ROM
I read on another forum that this really works best on Cyanogen 4.2.X
Works like a Charm in Chile in South America...
It's pretty tough to read through all 9000 pages of all 9000 threads related to this subject. So, unless someone can point to a link of this actually working on Cupcake, then this thread title should either be edited or deleted because I tried it on on Hofo 3.07 and it was nothing but major problems and didn't even come close to working. Luckily I backed up before the experiment.
Every success story I have read of this working on a 32a Magic, the person is showing a Donut ROM in their sig.
mistake.. sorry
sorry guys, its my bad. currently no cupcakes user post any successful navigation. only 2.0 or 1.6 supported. well, why do u guys still wanna stay on 1.5? upgrade to donut and have a taste of the NAV!

I extensively use Exchange integration and the only tool that provides that on a good level is HTC Sense. AFAIK there is no 1.6 ROM with Sense. Otherwise I would give it a try.

Lastest news:
Just in case anyone is following this thread. Google Maps 3.2.1 (which is the latest Map app with Nav from Google) has been tweaked to allow it to work outside of the US. There are two Nav launcher apps that have been released to work with it to get search for directions by voice. "Tim Hortons in <my city>" works great which is very important to us Canucks...
This requires 1.6 plus working voice (to speak the directions). It is available for both rooted and stock phones. IT DOES NOT WORK WITH 1.5 (Cupcake).
It does seem to be somewhat dependant on what ROM you are using. It works for sure with stock 1.6 builds, and with "stock" Amon RA and Cyanogen ROMs. Depending on what you are running and have tweaked it might not work or cause issues with other apps. One side effect some people are reporting is it causes FCs with Google Places.
It does not work in locations where Google Maps does not work (I think Maps does not work in Vietnam).
The latest iteration is easy to get working. However, the root version (which replaces your existing Google Maps app) absolutely requires you to remove all instances of the Map app off your phone and uninstall it (to remove the keys from the packages file) before you will be able to successfully install the new tweaked version. The non-root version provides a renamed Maps app so you will have both Google version and the tweaked one co-existing on your phone.
It does not require mucking about with build props, so if you don't like it all you have to do is delete the app and reinstall the stock one from the marketplace.
I have seen reports of it working in various countries in Europe and can confirm it is rock solid in Canada.

Any interest in Dell Mini 3i or OPhone Hacking?

I'm in China
Why is it I haven't seen much on here about the Asian variety of phones (other than HTC). We have WMx.x, Symbian, Nucleus (MTK chipset based OS), Android, Ophone (Android based not sure why it exists to be honest) and iPhone.
Market share - Nucleus is probably the largest, followed by WM, Sybian, iPhone, then Android/Ophone.
Currently I have an iPhone (ancient 2G), and have just bought a Dell Mini3i, as I donated my 3G iPhone to family back home.
The Mini3i runs an Android variant called OPhone.
The 3i is a little underwhelming software wise.
Its quite crap at the moment as its sitting on Android 1.0 (OPhone 1.0), but for all intents and purposes Android = Ophone its pretty much the same underneath.
There are a bunch of similar phones to this - the Lenovo O1, LG GW880, Motorola something or other (can't be hassled to go look) etc.
While I haven't rooted mine just yet, I have been playing around, and reading the Chinese forums.
Boot loader appears to be similar on all the devices - its made by BORQ's in Beijing, and appears to be quite basic.
Motorola and O1 seem to have the best support for now, the main problem in the Chinese forums is people *****ing about being stuck on older versions.
Some are running 1.6, most on 1.5, and the unlucky few 1.0 "Ophone"
2.0 and 2.1 has yet to hit the mainstream here.
There are people with N1/G5's (Nexus 1 / HTC G5) on 2.1 though, pretty much any phone is available, although anything with wifi is essentially grey import from overseas (HK mostly)
Back to the phone -
Thankfully you can install any apps as apk's, no need to hack for that - so its fairly easy to get info on the innards.
RootExplorer is your friend
RootExplorer also allows you to remount partitions r/w, so root access is fairly easy too. There are precompiled su binaries for 1.5 out there, although I've yet to do my phone.
The Dell mini3 is running on a Marvell Tabor. Fast chip, nice touchscreen, decent resolution, just crap on 1.0.
Firmware files for most of the "ophones" (except motorola) are mff files.
The mff files appear to just be compressed images with instructions for how to write the various partitions out.
eg the O1 mff has this in the "mff" zip

Different phones have different firmware writing software, the Motorola's are using RSDLite, LG - SML_OMS, CTHall, others something homegrown called Firebolt, which is written by BORQS
Most firmware tools appear similar though functionality wise.
Haven't played around inside the phone yet to see if its easy to get jtag access, although that was mostly because i couldn't work out how to remove the top part without breaking it.
If anyone wants more info, or a firmware dump let me know.
Hopefully there is some interest out there in the English speaking world for these!
(Apologies if this is an inappropriate forum, this seemed the closest)
Lawrence.
hi, sounds like you are a pro on this. hopefully you can offer help on my issue. i have got MT710 with 1.5. could you suggest any solutions for root it? or any other useful info about this phone.

Yes, incomplete feeling emerges while comparing to other droids.
This OS distro is named "ophone" and was created by borqs.com They did quite a good job working on available Android v1.5 sources... Only they took it too long! Android platform is moving fast, many releases in few months. Version 1.5 is year old, almost obsolete now.
Items such as google apps were _not_ deliberately removed: they actually were never included. Those missing apps are not freely available and depend on agreements with Google to be added to any distro. That agreement never happened, possibly were never attempted.
Claro only adds few items of their brand over ophone image, including those apps with notorious red icons.

Sciphone is an MTK based phone. Also runs Java, but not the same as the Mini9 at all really. Different cpu's etc..
Google MTK for updated firmware for those.
@Legbr etc
Finally have some firmware files for the Mini3 to work from.
There are two different 1.5 version ones here:
March 1.5 firmware
h t t p://w w w .namipan.com/d/DELL_MINI3I_OMS1.5.rar/a5ba3b06ab0bfc9baeb2f09b44f54aa40bac3457ee8ebc04
Feb 1.5 firmware
h t t p:// u.115.com/file/f1e196b9b2
Again, the MFF format is just a compressed file with other files inside.
I'll start taking a look at the format in a bit and see what goodies I can find.
I think given the multiple files, it might be possible to compile a newer android, and flash using the current linux bin's we have in the MFF.
Note, you should probably use Firebolt to burn these, as the ODS software is buggy crap.
Put phone into flash mode first if burning (turn off, hold home button on side, power on again). Should show the bootloader screen.
Useful files:
Root tool which works on 1.5
h t t p://w w w .computersolutions.cn/downloads/oPhone/universal_android_root_v1.5.3.apk
RootExplorer (use to get rid of half the useless crap)
h t t p://w w w .computersolutions.cn/downloads/oPhone/RootExplorer_v2.10.3.apk
Firebolt (note you'll need your phones usb drivers installed for this)
h t t p://w w w .computersolutions.cn/downloads/oPhone/Firebolt_2_0_1.zip
Again, I'll be taking a look at the MFF files in more detail hopefully soonish, so I can see whether its possible to include our own firmware files (looks probable).
Lastly, a big f*ck you very much to Dell for all their non-support / lack of assistance for all this.

Hi guys,
I know that my question will be totally out of place.
But I'm experiencing a problem with my mini 3ix and i've searched high and low for any solution and here is far the best content that I found about this phone.
Today I woke up and it was shown that my sd card was full. It asked if i'd like to uninstall some apps. I chose to do so, but it froze and I could only remove the battery to turn it off. From that on when I turn my phone on, it keeps rebooting.
Is there any way that i could solve this problem without sendind it to the Technical Suport?
I thank you all beforehand.

Huawei P40 Pro - Google Services suddenly stopped working

Hello,
I have a Huawei P40 Pro. I installed the Google Apps before over a year. Back then, the installation worked with LZPlay and no downgrade was necessary. I was using the phone as my daily driver with Google Services without any problem. Today I woke up and the Google Services stopped working. The Play Store says that an Authentication is required. It seems to me like the device was added to some kind of blacklist. Is anybody here familiar with this issue or knows how to fix it?
I'm happy for your thoughts. Cheers
Same thing happened to me yesterday, so i redid the process which of course is a pain. No idea what caused it
Store makes self-update, and in the background it automatically updates to Google Play services. Google and Huawei do everything they can to prevent the Google suite from running on these phones.
Many users want to force updates to Google Play Services for no real reason, just to have the latest version, not to mention that in the latest versions there may be changes that can identify and block the use of Google on these phones.

so you did the whole process of downgrade and Reinstalling?
I would try this before doing the whole process::
1. delete google account from phone
2. add the google account again with bellow tutorial
3. fix Play Protect Errors (If they are)

I did the rollback, re-did all steps and it's still not working. same warnings from Play project. They must have pushed some kind of change as it only started after yesterday.

I would try this before doing the whole process::
1. delete google account from phone
2. add the google account again with bellow tutorial
3. fix Play Protect Errors (If they are)

It is push notification fix (payed version). I am allowed to share by the creator of file but is not for free. Details in private.
Now, I want to see if the phones that use this fix are affected. Mine is not.
I made my own thread.

Fixed login in android 2.3.6

Hello everyone. This is my first post. I don't know if I put it in the right place.
So remember when Google banned login on Android 2.3.6 or other older devices? Well, I bring the definitive solution to be able to log in on Android 2.3.6. You just have to download this package that I have created myself, install the 3 applications, and you will be able to log in.
