what root(ing) options are available for the A42s? - Samsung Galaxy A42 5G Questions & Answers

OK been awhile since I've needed to root a new phone (2 S5's). I rooted both of them with philz touch. Which phil seems to have stopped developing.
So I'm looking for options for the A42 5G that will permit me to get a de-bloated image on it. Magisk seems to be all I can find. But if I'm not mistaken,
it'll trip KNOX. Which seems like a bad option. Any thoughts or suggestions greatly appreciated.
Thank you for all your time, and consideration.

Towelroot should work. It works on the standard S5 and AT&T S5 active as well as Verizon variants.

Go to device info in settings and look at the Kernel version. What date is listed?
**EDIT...NM, I see the kernel date listed in dallas532's sig as July 11. Towelroot will not work with Kernel dated after June 3rd.
You can put in a request to CF here to create a working CF Auto Root for your device. Just be sure to post the recovery.img file as listed in the OP if/when the source code is available.

Request has been made!
I returned mine on launch day for a regular gold s5 because of the software differences. I tried all different ways I could think of to root and couldn't get a recovery to stick without soft bricking the phone.

I feel the same way. I knew I should have purchased the regular S5. Damn it. I guess we're stuck. If anyone hears anything please post it here. I'll do the same. Thanks !
I'd be willing to trade my regular Sprint s5 for the sport if anyone is interested. Message me.

Good to see ya interested in this phone too, UPdownLoAD! I hope all went well with the Torque dev when I had to pop off of the grid right after rooting that (this one is A LOT easier...trust me).
I just bought this phone earlier this week and hadn't looked into its rootability. I figured that, since it is a Samsung phone on Sprint, it would have an unlocked bootloader (and it does). There are, however, zero support tools for these. This is not TowelRoot eligible due to the newer patched kernel and is not on the CF-Auto-Root list yet.
I took a little time during the LLWS today to get this thing rooted and confirmed before I go out of town on business for a week and it turned out just fine.
Solution: Simply employing the use of a custom recovery and using the "fix su binaries" and "prevent stock recovery flashing" options upon exiting after entering the recovery.
Ok, yes, there is no official release of CWM, TWRP or Philz for this device yet. I have a custom recovery that is in Chinese that I, personally, know how to decipher, but would not release it here*. Hopefully, there is an official recovery on the way or someone properly builds one in English. CWM used to have an automated recovery builder tool server-side, but I think it has been offline since March of this year. Again, I am about to head out on business soon and don't have a lot of time until on my flights to dig more into this, but wanted to give the certain thumbs up to anyone considering this phone but didn't know if it would have root.:good::good::good:
In summary: YES, the Sprint Samsung Galaxy S 5 Sport (SM-G860P) on the latest OTA build (NG3) is rootable just fine.
*Please do not ask me for the recovery that I have...Google is your friend (it's only in a single public location as of right now), but I did not want to be responsible for someone grabbing it and guessing what characters mean and borking their phone.
I need help.

Most likely you'd need the Stock The file to Odin back to stock. But I'm not even sure those are available. Least I haven't seen anything mentioned about em.
Not sure what root method you tried, but there's been alot of talk going around for a week or so, that neither cf root, or towelroot methods don't work.
Next time (to be totally safe) it may be best to wait for a stock tar file to be available, before Taking a chance like this. Just a thought. Head to the SamMobile website and look up your devise to see if they got the Stock tar up. Still a pretty new device, so not sure if they'll be around yet. That sux tho.
Good luck!

The NG2 and NG3 tars are out. Get NG3 and prepare to wipe the entire device if you Odin the whole tar. It would be more helpful to know what you actually did (the method) versus saying "I tried to root". Since there is no automated root specific to this device yet and TowelRoot would not cause a bootloop, you likely ran something you certainly should not have (if it wasn't made for this phone model, why would you do that?) You've likely hosed up the phone/system to the point where you have to run the full tar (versus just the boot/kernel or the modem to "fix" with your user & system data in tact).
Grab the NG3 tar from sammobile or samsung-firmwares and Odin back to stock.
FYI TO ALL: everything is running smoothly after running my Titanium Backup restore from my old GS5 and pushing in Xposed modules. Also have successfully applied the hotspot tweak to my telephony.db and SD card write access. Hopefully I get some time during flights with Wi-Fi to pump out a recovery worth wide-releasing sometime this week if no one else chimes in.

I await patiently for some one to root and a custom recovery. I actually like this phone and prefer it over the regular but awesome GS5. I just wish for more support. I have rooted and customized every android phone I have gotten within a day of purchase, so it became habit and ritual. Now I sit here waiting patiently.

Indeed. Here is a link to the CF-Auto-Root download:

Just download, extract and flash the Tar with Odin using the PDA option. Let the device reboot into the temporary recovery and self-root.

[Q] Galaxy s6 after rooting

Hello, I have rooted my galaxy s6 international version and the only thing I am using is some CSC (?) features like alphabetacilly sorting the app drawer, adblocker and whatsmapp. Actually, I kind of regret it, I want back my factory galaxy s6, warranty, clean rom, is there any way to get like a new device? Installing the stock rom I had will fix it?
Now I see more problems with the s6 like fingerprint sensor isn't working, I'm so afraid without the warranty, don't you?
The burned eFuse-Chip is in fact a hardware damage caused by rooting from the user --> no more warranty by Samsung! You can check that in several reports online, in magazins and even at Samsung

Saw this in the other thread located here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s6/help/penalties-flashing-rooting-t3097277
So yeah you can never restore original, never...You can only flash stock firmware.
I did root my Galaxy S6, at first I was very disapointed that I did that, but now I'm thinking that sooner or later I would still have done the same thing, because without root your phone is kind of limited to some things, root gives you more power over the phone so you can control it how you like.
Edit: Fingerprint scanner works fine for me, for you it's probably software related issue, that could be solved by flashing other firmwares.

If you press the "More" button up to the right there's an option called "Emergency software recovery initialisation". There you can re-install your whole phone to completely factory settings
It will not untrip your KNOX if you rooted the phone in any other way than with PingPong Root, that is not possible for the time being.

Is it possible to install Magisk on the Galaxy S4 UCUAMDL bootloader?

I'm not sure if anyone will respond to this or something because most of the posts here are really old but is it possible to install Magisk on the UCUAMDL bootloader? I don't want to be left out of the fun that Magisk gives, and want to let go of SuperSU once and for all

This will not work, this is the standard Magisk installation for all devices, I've tried this countless times, always ended up in a bootloop since Magisk requires an unlocked bootloader, and since the bootloader is impossible to unlock thanks to AT&T, it will not work. There are many, many articles like this that copy the same words from other articles and replace the device's name in the original article with the name of the device you are using, which looks really obvious and weird. I'm still looking for an answer, but thanks for your help anyways, I never expected someone to still look through the S4 forum thing.

Well done my friend! I appreciate your quick response and new knowledge. I flashed the patched boot img 3 times today with no luck. Of course that was after I used the terminal emulator to flash a twrp img and tripped the alarm. Its rooted but I've already been spoiled by Magisk. Thanks again.

Nope. And it wasn't a lack of trying. And to be honest I don't have Magisk on any of my rooted devices. At first I really liked it I thought it was Cadillac but I went back to SuperSU. Really the only module I ever used was kali Nethunter I had a lot of them downloaded but never used them. I don't know how unlock the bootloader on a S4 I don't know anyone that does except one guy who charges an arm and a leg to do it.

Afaik you can only get back stock recovery by flashing stock firmware via Odin or Heimdall.
Everything will be wiped doing that.

Well, as you've already flashed TWRP you have some experience already.
Use Samfirm_reborn.0.3.6.3 to download multiple! (by checking "binary nature") part stock firmware.
Get device into download mode and flash the files (Ap to AP, bl to BL, aso) in Odin 3.14 and above.

Hi there again bmwdroid,
So I've succeeded on installing the stock recovery system on my Galaxy Note, but the main reason that i wanted to "restore" it was to recover Samsung Knox encryption and regain access to the Samsung Pay and Pass functionnalities. So do U know if it's possible to solve it without sending to a Samsung authorized support or that's the only way to regain access to those functions? And just one more thing I've downloaded the right files from Samfirm_reborn.0.3.6 as U said it and flashed the right files(AP and BL), but I've asked myself if it's needed to flash the other ones (CP, CSC_OWO and HOME_CSC_OWO) and if it's needed where do I flash the CSC_OWO and the HOME_CSC_OWO since I can't flash two CSC files in the same flashing port.
Once again thank U for the support and I hope U can answer these questions.

Well I probably can't answer all but will try to.
If Knox has been triggered there is afaik no way to untrigger it again as it's a hardware switch.
You only need one CSC.
Can't remember which of the 2 will let you keep your DATA .
Edit: found it. That was easy.

Question Reasons not to root

Hi,
I've done a quick search but can't find anything definitive so a quick response on here would be greatly appreciated.
Are there any reasons not to root on a P7P? Like tripping Knox on Samsung devices? Basically, irreversible side effects of unlocking the BL or installing Magisk? I'm rooted on a Doogee S98 Pro, a Xiaomi MiPad 4 and a Samsung Tab S6 at the moment and I don't think I could go back to having no root. It's pretty much my main reason for not buying an S22 Ultra.
Hi
this is one of the major benefits of the P7P in my perspective: you can unlock, root, unroot, relock without any negative side effects. You don't trip any fuse or have other effects that cannot be undone by a simple reflash.
Plus, maybe due to this, the P7P is one of the phones where the dev community is still quite active.....

Perfect answer, thanks!
Pretty hard to brick a Pixel.
Just make sure you don't relock your bootloader unless you're fully stock. I've seen a bunch of people doing that throughout these forums here for some reason.
Yup, if you want to unroot once you're rooted, it's absolutely imperative you flash full stock before toggling OEM Unlock and issuing any ADB commands to re-lock the bootloader. Do that without flashing back to factory stock and you end up with a phone that can't boot because the bootloader is locked with a non-stock build, you can't unlock the bootloader because the OEM is toggled, and you can't flash a stock build because the bootloader is locked. Brick time.
Other than that it's a fairly safe phone to play around with.
I strongly recommend Pixel Flasher, it makes the whole process easier, but make sure you read up on it before doing anything.

GrapheneOS also supports relocking the bootloader, although I can't think of a reason why you'd want to.
The best reason not to root is that it's not needed in 2022. I can't imagine "needing" to do something with root that cannot be accomplished without root. YMMV

Call recording, full backup and restore, hosts based ad blockers.
Once rooted, it's annoying having to disable all Magisk mods, run updates, then re-root every month. I've also had updates corrupt the A/B Partitions. The warning screen for unlocked bootloader alone is a nuisance. If you're ok with that, go right ahead.

You're adding steps and no indication of why. Just install the update with modified boot.img and call it good.

I went 3 days before rooting my P7P since I was unfamiliar with the process. I was able to root OnePlus blindfolded, but the forums made Pixel seem difficult. It was the most miserable 3 days when everything I wanted to use/customize depended on root.
without root I could not even get 5G working. Furthermore the AOSP Mods on the stock ROM... Systemless Hosts AdBlocking, Re-Vanced, .......
I unlocked and rooted the phone before even booted it the first time

Updated to November, didn't disable any Magisk mods, no issues.
It's only some mods which cause issues. Not got them installed, you can perform the update without touching Magisk.

And wasn't it funny when you realized that root on Pixel is actually easier than everything else?

Maybe where you are, but not here and not in most places. So keep your legal advice to yourself, BRO.

Actually in most jurisdictions it's what's called a one party consent requirement wherein one of the parties involved must be aware and consent. In this case the person doing the recording qualifies as the consenting party. In other places two party or more consent is required but not everywhere
