Carbon Rom 9 Android 11 first stable build for PH-1 - Essential Phone Guides, News, & Discussion

CarbonROM releases Android 11 builds for 16 phones from OnePlus, Xiaomi, and others
The stable builds of CarbonROM based on Android 11 are live for 16 smartphones, including the OnePlus 6/6T, OnePlus 7 series, and more.
www.xda-developers.com

Used built-in updater to upgrade to Carbon 9 from Carbon 8. No problems. I was initially gonna do a clean install because I had little faith in a no fuss major version upgrade but hey, worked out fine.
Had to force stop Quickstep (Carbon's homescreen app) in order for my Niagara homescreen to be default again (eventhough it was already set as default in the phone settings).
Carbon 9 seems to have less customizations than Carbon 8 but C8 was of course much more mature.
I expect C9 will have more customizations added as time goes on.
Just like C8, I have yet to encounter any bugs with my usage on Verizon network.
I always hear about bugs on the other roms and never understood why they wouldn't try Carbon.
I don't have any of the bugs reported on the other roms using Carbon. C9 is no exception so far.
Battery wise it's a bit early to tell but I can at least say that C9 doesn't use any more battery than C8.
C9 might even be slightly better.
C9, to me, feels much smoother than C8.
Carbon is a bit late to the Android 11 party but I think it was worth the wait

Do notification LEDs work? Are you able to use speakerphone and have the other caller hear you without talking directly (1 inch away) into the aux mic on the top of the phone? Thanks!

LED notifications do not work. Good thing you point that out as I didn't catch it on my first review. It did work on CR8 though.
On speakerphone, the caller seems to hear me fine. Never had to rely on the aux mic even on CR8.
As for the battery life, it's same as CR8 with my usual usage.

Hi, thanks for reviewing the ROM. Do Contactless payments work? For me, it doesn't work on any 11.0 ROMs that I have tried so far.

I can't answer that because I do not use contactless payment and I'm not even sure I could as my phone is GAPPS-less.

You do not need GAPPS, any banking app supporting payments can be used, but it didn't work with mine unfortunately

You might not need GAPPS for contactless payments but most banking app require GAPPS anyway simply because your phone needs to pass the "SafetyNet" test.
Even with GAPPS installed it's not a given that your phone will pass SafetyNet. There are a bunch of other factors that can fail SafeNet such as root, custom Roms, etc...
Some people manage to pass SafetyNet even with custom Roms or root, but it might be dependent on the phone brand and model you use.
There are a bunch of apps that can test if your phone passes/fails SafetyNet.
If you can't get SafetyNet to pass, then you know why your contactless payment does not work.
SafetyNet pretty much tells apps that require it, the phone adheres to Google's safety standards and hasn't been altered/tempered with in any way.
That is why if you go back to stock and re-lock your bootloader, your phone will likely pass SafetyNet.

I didn't clean flash CR9 as I was already using CR8 but I'm assuming the procedure is not any different than the other roms (flash Jan firmware, flash Feb vendor, flash CR9).
Maybe CR9 has already the firmware/vendor stuff already included like Lineage, I don't know.

Thanks for the detailed reply. Yes, of course, I have Gapps installed, and I also checked on Magisk that the device passes Safetynet, which is why it's weird. The NFC is detected when I try to pay, but the machine says to try with a different card or to swipe in. I don't have any other problem using the app for online payments, so I don't quite understand why contactless payments do not work. They didn't work as well on the other 11 ROMS I tried such as Statix 4.2, EvoX. PA 5 was my previous daily, and contactless used to work in it flawlessly with Magisk installed. It's quite unfortunate that it doesn't work in this ROM, because out of all the 11 ROMs I tried, Carbon seemed to be the most stable with no critical issues.

I am currently having the StatiXOS 4.2 20210821. Is it possible to use the Lineage Recovery (Apply Update, from ADB) to install the CarbonROM 9?

[ROM] Phh-Treble [AOSP 9.0]

With Huawei security concerns in the news recently, I wanted a daily replacement vanilla ROM for EMUI, including TWRP backup (unencrypted data) for my 8.4" SHT-W09.
Phh-Treble by @phhusson is by far the best I've tried so far - everything seems to work including bluetooth - although I've yet to try NFC. I don't pretend to be an expert, everything is at your own risk etc and can probably be done slightly differently, but here's my working method:
1. Start with an unlocked bootloader - achieved by following these instructions by @Appo11on
2. Install ROM using instructions in the first link - Mediapad M5 is arm64, A only and you'll probably need Gapps or Floss
3. Immediately factory reset using stock recovery - I had to flash it back to recovery_ramdisk, as extracted from full stock firmware using HuaweiUpdateExtractor, found in this root guide, also by @Appo11on
4. Flash this TWRP by @schwabe93 using instructions in the root guide above - @Pretoriano80's TWRP wouldn't progress through it's start screen
5. Install Magisk by @topjohnwu (I used v18.0) using TWRP, then boot to system
6. Display is blurry until enabling the workaround in Phh Treble settings - takes a min or 2 to stick
7. Enjoy rooted, encrypted Treble Pie ROM
To remove encryption:
8. Edit vendor/etc/fstab.hi3660 using these instructions by @PPCholic - devices other than SHT-W09 may have a slightly different filename
9. Flash back to stock recovery_ramdisk, factory reset again and boot ROM
10. Follow points 4 - 6 again and enjoy rooted unencrypted Treble Pie ROM
Bye bye EMUI, thanks for the memories!

Battery life seems fine - similar to EMUI, if not slightly better.
I don't have much experience with LDAC, but having switched to it's codec in developer options, there's still decent sound playing in my bluetooth headphones.
OK, will follow your guide and report back.

Widevine L3 means it won't play Netflix and possibly Amazon Prime Video at HD rates. I'm trying to figure out if HD playback is more important than not having EMUI.

Yar, disappointed! I was hoping it'd have L1 like the OpenKirin ROMs.
*EDIT* By installing this ROM, it will get rid of EMUI.... and then I could install Viper4Android? Correct?
has anyone been able to set up any cloud services with this?
I wonder, how openkirin does their Widevine L1 - trick. I do not want to use netflix with less than HD, as I am paying lots of money for the account ... :-/
Haven't found a way of adding it so far (+ I am no developer of any kind ....)

Any luck with ldac? This is the only feature I seek in an alternative ROM.
Nope, first I tried to downgrade but did not work. I tried to unlock through FunkyHuawei but they refunded me after 14 days. In the end I returned it and planned to stay with my 2015 Samsung Tab S2 a little longer.

Very clean rom. For who need, magnetic cover doesn't work and face recognition isn't enabled.
Damn I wish somebody would make a ROM like this for the 10" screen.
Huawei Security Concerns?
Well I guess this thread is only for panic USA Trump user's right? I don't know what all people shout against Huawei...that is an old discussion and now the USA is scary...and apple too.

The hardware in the 8" and 10" tablets are the same I thought?
I would imagine being that this is a "treble" ROM there would be no issue with the difference in screen size, its even the same amount of pixels?
Can anyone confirm if this is working on the 10" version?
OK, mediapad M5 forum is officially dead....

Is rooting the 8t even worth the trouble?

If I just want to install a custom ROM, some basic FOSS apps and maybe TWRP and then install a ROM update a couple of times a year, is there anything that I would need root permission for? If I don't root the phone what am I losing out on? Is it just that I would be able to get a more complete backup with root access? So many "Top 10 reasons" articles make it sound like root is required to install a ROM but that's obviously not the case with the OnePlus 8T.
Time and it may prove harder to troubleshoot.
If you get stupid, malware or a rootkit might get in.
If you wanna play god you better know what your doing. It's almost impossible to crash a stock Android. Not so with a rooted phone, and that's assuming you don't inadvertently brick it while rooting. I've lost count of all the "I bricked my phone" threads here.
I don't root as my stock N10+'s run well, fullfill their mission and are reasonably secure even with outdated firmware. Simply not worth the time and the risk of destroying a valuable device that's notoriously hard to root (in my case) for the gains I would get.

With an unlocked bootloader and no root, you won't be able to:
- use banking apps, Netflix, or any app that requires the device passing SafetyNet.
- fully backup/restore your apps and their data.

Were I planning to keep my OnePlus 8T with the stock OS, I suppose having root access would at least allow me to turn off some of the more annoying bloatware such as Zen. But with my older OnePlus, like you, I've chosen to tolerate the annoyances because introducing Magisk seems like it would be a make-work project for the life of the phone.
On the new phone I'm planning to switch out the operating system so if ever I was going to root a phone, this would be the time. I'm still thinking it over, especially the backup question. I don't keep anything important on my phone so if I had to rebuild it after a wipe it would be time consuming but eventually I'd get everything back to the way it was, I think.
Thank you for your reply; it was good to hear the perspective of someone from the non-rooted camp.

Thank you, kind Sir, for this summary explanation. It confirms my rather fuzzy understanding of the main reason people put so much work into maintaining root, i.e. banking apps and Netflix.
I don't use my phone for either so I guess it comes down deciding whether or not having a backup of a few really basic FOSS apps (and contact list?) would be worth the complexity of Magisk.
Maybe the thing to do would be, set up the phone with the custom ROM and apps, use it for a couple of weeks until I get comfortable with it, then wipe and rebuild. I'll know for sure then if a full backup was necessary.

I wish I had read this before unlocking the bootloader. My previous phone, the Poco X3, would pass fine with the majority of custom ROM's on Android 11 so I completely forgot about the root & magisk palaver I had to endure in the past. Think I'll pass for now on that basis!
EDIT - I've unlocked the bootloader and not rooted, and both the ROMs I've tested work absolutely fine with banking apps

We are very excited to announce the alpha of Paranoid Android Sapphire, based on Android 12.
On the first launch, you’ll notice a clean setup with a beautiful wallpaper from Hampus Olsson, who teamed up with us again to create several beautiful pieces of artwork. Hampus is a multi-disciplinary artist whose design stands for itself and we’re glad to have him onboard. We also added further UI touches that we believe enhance the overall user experience. You can find all of the Paranoid Android wallpapers and many more in the Abstruct app from the PlayStore.
Our builds are based on the Code Aurora Forum Android base, which is optimized for Qualcomm platforms and has a higher degree of performance, battery life, and functionality compared to the Android Open Source Project platform. The Paranoid Android team and contributors are focusing on squashing existing bugs, and implementing and improving features, performance, and stability. We are dedicated to providing a user experience with the stability that you can expect from stock ROMs with best-in-class performance and features to help you get the most out of your device.

great rom, 10/10
You know, this can't be a coincidence.
I've asked about a Pixel Experience ROM for this phone just a couple of hours before it was released! )) THIS IS INSANE!!
Holy moly! Thank you so much for this!
Just one question. I see there's a "12" and a "12 (Plus edition)". What's the difference between the two?
Edit: nevermind. Found the answer here:
So basically, the "normal" edition is the clean, simple, Google stock edition, the "Plus" edition is the normal one + some customisations.
Edit2:
Any chance we can get VoLTE and VoWIFI working with this ROM? Any manual changes that we can do to enable these services?
help, i'm trying to log in in my Spotify account but i can't get it, idk if is a bug of the rom, says "An error ocurred, please try later"

Hi guys,
Any chance we can get VoLTE and VoWIFI working with this ROM? Any manual changes that we can do to enable these services?
This doesn't seem to be an issue with Pixel Experience ROMs. There are ROMs which have these services working. But they are for other devices.
So...is this a hardware thing? Is it because this device is using an Exynos chip, whereas the other one (Moto G60 for example) is using a Qualcomm chip?
However, there seem to be ways to add this on Moto One Action...and there's even a thread here on xda about it. But it seems to be for Android 11, in case that makes a difference, and it's only for VoLTE. No WiFi Calling.
This is not a request in any way. I'm super happy that we have this ROM here. And I'm super grateful to the dev/maintainer for that. I know it's not an easy task to build and maintain an Android ROM. So kudos for that!
I'm just trying to understand more about these services on custom ROMs like this one, and why some of them do have these services, where others don't. And also, if there's any way to add them somehow.

It should work, most files responsible for calling etc. are forked from Android 11.
What's interesting is that I do have VoLTE with LineageOS and Evolution X, if I manually add IMS APN, but not with this ROM... Kinda weird.
Still no idea how to add VoWIFI, in case that's possible. I mean, it should be possible...I think it's probably just an xml somewhere. But I don't know where, or how, or what to change. If anyone knows, please, let me know.
Also, related to this ROM, sometimes, after using it for a while, the recent apps carousel (swipe up) is freezing. And window rounded corners disappear, they become rectangles. Sometimes it just fixes itself after a while. But the whole UI becomes unresponsive during that time.
Bug (probably already known): when you drag down the notification shade, part of the clock is obstructed by the camera cutout.
Also, for as far as I can see, we should have VoLTE with Pixel Experience, according to this: https://github.com/PixelExperience/frameworks_opt_net_ims
But..maybe it's a bug?
I've been using it since launch, it's wonderful considering it's the initial version. Congratulations. so far the only problem is with Widevine.
Thank you for this ROM, it has lotta features and passes SafetyNet without magisk.

The clock inside the camera also happens on stock.
August Update Released!
Changelog:
- August security patch
- Monet bootanimation added
- Updated translations
- Other minor issues have been fixed
Thanks for the rom and for the update
Thank you very much for the update!
So far so good.
Small issue with that date inside the camera ring. I don't remember seeing that with stock Android 11...but maybe I missed it.
Also, VoLTE and VoWIFI don't seem to work at all, even after manually adding the IMS APN. They are available as options. They are turned on. But...they don't work.
Any chance this could be fixed?

Question The official Lineage os with Gapps on the 7 pro is the perfect phone!

It takes whatever is wrong with the stock and throws it out the window. And the scrolling is also buttery smooth on web browsing especially if you install chrome as a third party app. You can add as much Google apps as you want. And have the best experience and for a sound mod I use is James dps magisk with the eq cranked all the way up with the convolver on the very wide setting. It's an amazing experience.
If you go to lineage os website you can download the firmware for lineage os but you have to use the jan beta build recovery to install.
Do you get the superior call screening that only Pixels get when using Lineage?
It is this feature alone that makes me stay with a Pixel as it is. If this is lost then it's no better than any other phone available today.
i seem to have better connection service yes. stock gives me issues when calling people like the phone disconnects. no issues so far.
I think @jaseman is referring to the call SCREENING, not quality (IE the ability to block useless calls). I never installed Lineage on any of my decices and i also wonder myself if you do keep all the "exclusive" features this device has.
For exemple, let's consider the camera app. @UltimateGamer83 can you confirm you have the SAME camera with all Pixel features activated ?
Call screening and Google camera working 100% I've been on lineage since the first build. Super solid

So Google Phone works with Mindthegapps along with Lineage 20? I tried it in the past but found that CALL SCREENING could not be activated.

Working for me. Didn't do anything special either. It lets me select male or female voice .. if it doesn't allow you to, it doesn't work
how is the battery life with mindthegapps and lineage?

LOS was always better in battery life then Stock roms. Used it on most OP devices I had. Pretty sure on Cheetah is the same.
Better than stock. Might stick with lineage os for now on and keep my phone heavily modded.
I have ran this software since November of last year and I can honestly say that the battery life is superb It works really really well.

You just have to check the LOS topic for our device. It says in the OP :
"For some reason, this ROM only needs the Displax SafetyNet Fix and Shamiko (or DenyList) on top of Magisk in order to pass SafetyNet/Play Integrity, which is a nice bonus. As of 11/17, I was able to use GPay with this ROM if you use Magisk, Shamiko, and Displax SafetyNet Fix."
@UltimateGamer83 @i42o thanks, you convinced me to give LOS a try later this week
do you recommend installing kirisakura kernel or is stock already good like this?
