HELP After updating Android System Webview My Phone is Unresponsive - General Questions and Answers

Hello Guys,
I come in need of a help,
I'm writing from my computer now,
Yesterday my phone was working fine,
Today morning, I updated the apps on my phone; amongst the updates was android system webview.
After a reboot, my phone is unresponsive, it won't open any of the apps from that point.
I reboot again, since keyboard doesn't work, I used the OTG cable to use the physical keyboard to enter the password and get in. Tried entering setting to uninstall that crap app, settings is unresponsive.
No SIM services, no keyboard, no fingerprint, no settings etc.. basically nothing works and everything says "unresponsive and asks to either wait or close".
The only thing I have now is TWRP Recovery, and I'm inside it now.
I've wiped Cache + Dalvik / ART Cache : Result still same, nothing works.
I mailed [email protected] (which is provided in the app's "Developer" section) about this and got a reply that the mail is no longer being monitored.
Can someone please let me know how I can remove android system webview by using TWRP ? So that I can enter the phone back again as normal..
Device Details:
Lenovo K8 Note
Android 7.1.1 Nougat, (Never updated the OS)
Device has been rooted and has recovery options.

I think you can find WebView module in Magisk respiratory so I suggest you give that a try. Flash it and I think it will be fine as long as you have Magisk installed, of course.

Thanks, I couldn't quite understand that..
I've never read/seen a need for Magisk so far.. so may I know what is the procedure to be done here...?
I do read Magisk is a systemless Root, (I already have SuperSu, is that the same functionality? (though I can't open anything that is))

Find the Magisk zip on Google and flash it over TWRP.
Head over to the Magisk module site and you will be able to find an alternate WebView module you can flash. It will be in zip format so I guess you will need USB to transfer those files to your phone since you cannot use it to download modules.

Give it a try and come to tell if you have sorted it out.
If not, you will probably need to flash your ROM again hoping the application won't stay updated but to back to stock version.

Oh, one more thing,
Does this procedure mean, I'll lose TWRP and SuperSu?
Can I not just downgrade the android system webview manually itself?

You won't lose TWRP but I am not sure about SuperSu since it's very old and people don't use it from the time Magisk appeared. I don't think you will be able to have both TWRP and SuperSu.
It would be good for you to just uninstall the updates of WebView if you can use your phone at all. That would solve the problem.

TWRP basically is a menu what allows you to select and apply ADB and/or Fastboot commands.
SuperSU is a Superuser access management tool: it requires SU binary got installed on Android.
Both mentioned sofwares are completely different things, don't depend on each other.
BTW:
I always root Android without the need to make use of Magisk or SuperSU.

So, I went through these

I already have SuperSu and it seems if I need to goto Magisk (which is just for that other webview application, I have to do a lot of rolling back and applications going away, ) I don't want that..
Let's keep the Magisk idea as last resort and please let me know if there is any other way to delete the entire Android Webview related stuff and start from beginning.

My recommendation: Reflash phone's Stock ROM to get rid off of all modifications you applied so far, then restart modding from the scratch.

Just because of one application?
I just want that android webview gone/replaced with a stable one, is that not possible without destroying everything?

Thanks everyone.
we have a solution,
In my case, uninstalling the Xposed framework fixed it for me..
So, while working on this issue I had made a flow map and a log of what is done and its results, may be someone else can benefit from it in the future..
Spoiler: Tries and results
Even starting the entering phone itself is a big issue, because the keyboard applications don't come up; fingerprint doesn't work on first boot as a security measure as well; connected physical keyboard to OTG to phone to enter password... then greeted with lots of errors of all the applications.

Unpacking the system web view.apk on computer gives crap details as it is almost completely encrypted.
Going rabbit hunting through the rabbit hole, checking each folders on "/"
found something similar /system/app/WebViewGoogle/WebViewGoogle.apk
Quick google search confirms that I’m on the right path to finding it...
May be data or XML is somewhere too?
Deleted(copied and deleted) /system/app/WebViewGoogle/WebViewGoogle.apk
Result, Same
Then Reverted
PS: Original Copy at ext_sdcard
Replaced the existing one (92.0.4515.115 with 90.0.4430.210)
Result, no changes.
Then reverted with the crappy original
May be adb will install properly?
Tried adb commands on phone on TWRP, doesn't work
Tried adb from computer to phone, unable to connect to phone.
Was doing it wrong, while in TWRP, I need to initiate "ADB Sideload" and then connect from PC (with Firewall allowed)
then "adb devices", shows connected device with serial number
after the above, the adb push keeps saying "error: connect failed: closed"
turning phone ON and connecting for additional settings (USB debugging) pops "mtp host failed" as soon as I wire..
Started the phone, switched over to Guest account, (oddly seems stuff there are kind of better with lesser error messages), tried launching playstore and wifi, both need password which I don't have, entering settings, hangs for a while, quickly go to apps and uninstall updates for android system web view.. web view becomes 0.0.1
results, fail
Created a temporary user account on phone whilst booting, (because of the observable lesser apps running if I switch over from main..)
added my gaccount on it,
launched playstore to update the android system web view..
the update is stuck at 60%~70 %each time and is unable to complete..
took the v90 application that is on pendrive, connected otg.. and started to install application manually from there..
it said, no space.. even though there is around 4 GB free... continued to disable other applications, such as chrome, youtube, drive etc..
still unable to install the v90 application
even installing other apps (sudoku example) have the same issue,
and then I see a popup that package manager has stopped working (aha! so that itself doesn't work, then can't install),
Went to see if I can change something on developer options, developer option wont come up even after 7+ taps.. hmm strange, may be only main account can have dev options.
While at it, swapped out the Gboard with older AOSP keyboard (retaining Fleksy though).
Rebooted and tried again.. no fix yet..
Atleast I don't have to switch to physical keyboard now for every reboot, since the inner older keyboard comes for first boot.
By TWRP, removed existing app and replaced with v87; doesn't seem to be any different, same errors...
Was about to install the Magisk but it seems to have lots and lots of catches to it, and things to-do before I can go to that...
Continuing investigation on how to downgrade and get back to older state
Through TWRP, deleted the app folder from /system/app/WebViewGoogle/WebViewGoogle.apk
researched to see if there is something else to delete, couldn't find much... proceeding from what we know...
Removed ATSystem.apk (3C's helper) from /system/priv-app just in cast (copy placed at ext_sdcard)
result no change..
Started at around 31-Jul-21 13:00 and went on till 01-Aug-21 01-26 pausing to for the day to rest...
Restored App Folder back to /system/app/WebViewGoogle/WebViewGoogle.apk
WebViewGoogle.apk is v90 again.. (the original seems to be missing, meh, not like it's going to fix)
reboot, result, no changes.
Starting step to install magisk
Removing xposed now..
wiped dalvik cache
rebooting
Kind of stable!!!
Everything seems to work?!?!
Firewalled all app except playstore and mail,
mail seems to work, but can't open the mails (just the headers are received), clicking on the mail says "unable to inflate webview"
aha, I forgot that I have v87 still, if I update that again, will it work (if it doesn't we know how to revert now)
proceeds to update v87 to latest
reboots,
I guess issue resolved by uninstalling xposed, next step to enter phone and move data to safe zone and think about next step.

Oh... sorry to hear that.
I don't know the solution to that, because mine is rooted I was able to get into the custom recovery and fix things.. not sure what can be done here for your case, (I do know that the old samsung's default recovery is kinda unreadable for English speakers)
So, I think it's best for you to start a new thread in the forum, because if you make a new thread there's a higher chance of reply than this thread which is already marked solved.

[Q] kobo vox: install google market?

hey all,
first post, apologies if this might be in the wrong place.
i've just picked up the kobo vox, and it's awesome, but i can't figure out how to get the android market running. i've got the apk installed, but the device doesn't give me the option to add a google account. the kobo vox explicitly says it supports the android marketplace, so i'm hoping i'm doing something wrong.
thanks!
I'm in the same state. I've looked about and managed to use some of Cyanogen's packages to install a few core stuff like the framework and the market app itself, but trying to run the Market asks me to register a Google account, which always fails saying there was a connection issue. On a further reboot android.process.acore decided to crash every five seconds and I had to reset the device to factory settings.
This kinda sucks because the device is fairly solid, but the default "market" is a joke. I'm already annoyed by the fairly large amount of preinstalled apps (which can't be uninstalled, as usual), but not having proper Market access would probably be a deal killer.
Please use the Q&A Forum for questions Thanks

What about Rooting?
I have run into the same problem. I think that before you can install the full android market we will have to Root the tablet. Has anyone tried the Gingerbreak.apk? Or is there some other way to Root the tablet?

I've tried GingerBreak on my Kobo Vox and it seems to have installed, however I'm not certain the SU access is working properly. When I try repairing permissions in ROM Manager, I get the message "An Error occured trying to run priviledged commands!". It also fails when I try to backup my ROM.
This is honestly the first Android device I've ever owned so I'm not certain that I'm doing everything correctly. I did make sure to allow SuperUser permissions to ROM Manager, but I'm still getting errors. Any help from a Veteran Android user would be appreciated.
Can't get past the Android Login
After rooting and installing Busybox I was able to install the Android Market but every time I try to login the app will not connect to the Market to confirm my ID, it seems to time out. Any Ideas on what I can try?
Turns out my inability to repair permissions was simply due to me not having busybox installed. I can attest that GingerBreak does successfully root the tablet.
I'm hoping I can find a way to install Clockwordmod recovery in order to install the google apps from CM7. I tried simply copying the files into place without success.
So, did you manage to install busybox? What version and where?
Tell me if you manage to install the recovery, the vox don't seem to have one by default.
If we manage to install all the google app and the googleframeworkservice, that would make the tablet a lot better and give the possibility to install the android market.
I was able to install busybox 4.3 /system/xbin. I do not know about a recovery mode but I did manage to put the tablet into "Safe Mode" after it do stock in a loop at bootup but I am not sure how I did it. According to user help you can not update the firmware from the SDcard.
Have you tried to install Clockwordmod?
I managed to install the googleserviceframework, but I need to install some other thing that don't want to install.
I also manage to install youtube (the real one) and it work great, I just can't sign in...
In the accounts & sync settings section, I can create a google account, but It can't communicate with the google server to set up the account, it give me the error:
"Can't establish a reliable data connection to the server."
It's probably cause by some app that I didn't manage to install yet, like "onetimeinitializer", "googlepartnersetup" and some other...
I've managed to install Busybox, but have yet been unsuccessful installing the Google Framework.
I was able to install the Clockwordmod, but I have yet to find a phone or tablet on it's list that is compatible with the Kobo Vox. I'm going to do my research to see if any phones or tablets have similar specs to the Vox and see if that will work. So far I've just been picking at random and trying it.
Try the B & N Nook Color - same CPU, Memory & screen size.
That was my first thought. Unfortunately no luck. With a couple of them I can seem to get them start loading as if they're going into an update but it always errors out. I'm now just systematically going through the list and driving every version.
If you attempt to install a version of Clockwork made for another device, you'll brick it.
Don't forget that after dropping in the files to the various system directories, you also have to set permit permissions properly.
Also, would be good to request a Kobo Vox forum here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1301121
If anyone in this thread is actually a developer who knows how to compile and so forth, Koush has a brief guide to porting Clockwork:
http://www.koushikdutta.com/2010/10/porting-clockwork-recovery-to-new.html
Manual Configuration is a must have option. Thanks
wow, pretty lame that the android market seems not to be supported despite it being touted as an official feature
on a side note, has anyone figured out how to change or remove that default dock (without rooting)? it's kind of a pain in the ass.
I've installed a couple dozen different clockwork of recoveries so far and haven't bricked it yet but maybe I should quit while I'm ahead. I'd rather not brick my shiny new Kobo.
Need Kernal Version & Build Number
I have to return my Kobo Vox because the speaker is not working. Under Privacy Settings I have done a Factory Data Reset but I am still showing the Super Icon. Does anyone have a copy of the original firmware or know how to unroot the device?

Official marketing material says apps but doesn't say Android Market. Some media outlets misquoted and wrote Market falsely.

Factory Reset just clears the data partition but doesn't reset the system partition.
Until someone properly compiles a custom recovery or finds a stock reset file, there's no safe way back.

How do I get gapps on my Mi Box

So I currently have a Mi Box (MiBox1S) and it's running Android 4.4.2. I'd like to install gapps onto it, to make it less like a brick and more like a streaming box. (Hulu won't work without it, plus the launcher it came with is ugly and in Chinese so I'd like Leanback) I've found there's no TWRP for the device as far as I can tell. However, I do have root that I achieved with KingoRoot. Since I couldn't get a recovery, I tried Flashify, FlashFire, & Flash Gordon apps to install w/o TWRP. Flashify needed a mouse or touchscreen, Flashfire doesn't support KingoRoot I guess, and Flash Gordon just flat out did nothing despite saying it was flashing and had root. I tried three different gapps installers, two said unsupported and the last needs a mouse to work. I did also try just sideloading the apps with ES. Opening any of them would just tell me Google Play services has stopped, so that's a no go. So, how does anybody propose I get gapps onto this thing? And maybe Lollipop too? I guess my fallback would be just trying to use Android x86 on an older pc but I'm having other issues with that as well. Mostly with the sound not working at all.

Since you already managed to root the device, you just need to go to apkmirror and install FOUR google packages specifically for version 4.4.2:
Google Play Store
com.android.vending
Google Play Services
com.google.android.gms
Google Service Framework
com.google.android.gsf
Google Account Manager
com.google.android.gsf.login
However, in order to make it work, you need to install them as system-app.
And MiBox 1s doesn't have any extra spaces for you to install all four.
So, for your own good, you should get rid of xiaomi system files first.
(as for exactly what can be gotten rid of... that is details, ping me again if you haven't give up on this box yet)
In the process, you may want to get rid of something like mitv.desktop. That is one thing sit on TOP of launcher thus without getting rid of it, none of your launcher will work.
So, you need to install a launcher first.
I have never gotten leanback to work. I did install an open-source "simple TV launcher" and it served my purposes.
At this time frame, I can't get a lot of stuff to work simply this box is too old. But I did manage to use the box without any xiaomi software.

I appreciate the reply, but this was over 2 years ago. I did get gapps on it but ended up bricking it by trying to install Leanback as a system app and resetting it never fixed it, so it has collected dust since then unfortunately.
If you are interested in revive the machine, I have a copy of an internal development image from Xiaomi.
It is the only image which I can repeatedly flash when I screwed up.
You can simply flash this development image first, then start over again.
By the way, I never managed to get leanback to work. I suspect the leanback launcher is based upon Android/5.
I end up using some open source launcher instead.
If you are interested in this image, let me know.
I also have a list of bloatware which you can safely remove (if you are willing to give up on any of xiaomi services
Also... as far as my experiences go, I don't really need gapps for some reason. I have a 3rd party Youtube, Kodi, and Netflix installed. None of them requires gapps.

[SOLVED] HELP! i cant get past the lock screen!

Good morning!!
i need some quick help if possible! You can even PM me so we can troubleshoot through discord.
TL;DR: the screen instantly goes black, restarts and returns to lockscreen the moment i unlock my device with the pattern (i suspect it's SYSTEMUI but can't be 100% sure). i can't get in now and got some work related data i need to recover from a widget that contains text along with chats from Whatsapp Plus.
stupid me did not make a nandroid backup in TWRP and now i'm screwed.
I use a Oneplus one with RR-O-v6.1.0-20180613-bacon-Official Ressurection Remix ROM based on android 8.1. Kernel is default/unchanged. Magisk is newest version (i think there were no updates for months now). I got 2 modules:
- busybox.
- Magisk Hide .Props config (a small terminal utility that can make google think i use a opo6 with android 9 [that's what i chose] so i get app updates) worked fine for half a year.
Then i took a look and saw an update for both. updating Busybox crashed magisk. Updating .props config seemed ok and just required rebooting like normal.
That's it essentially. since the reboot i can't get past the unlock screen anymore.
I tried the following:
i visited this link https://magiskroot.net/uninstall-magisk-module-twrp/ to first try to boot in core-only mode. then with disabled modules, then i uninstalled Magisk entirely using magisk uninstaller flashable zip from magisk manager (dot) com
the problem persists. i wiped cache and Dalvik/ART cache too but still the same.
besides the obvious clean re-flash that will wipe my data is there anything i can do to save it?
also i tried to attach a logcat but doing it just gives me one line an then nothing when doing it in ADB while the oneplus is in recovery mode.
If device is on (on lockscreen) i get 'waiting for device'. i searched and that could be because the ADB debugging checkmark is off... any way to turn it on using adb?
could wiping JUST Boot or System in TWRP do anyting?
since i got Titanium backup, can it restore data from a TWRP backup?
please help if possible.

Hello :good: ,
TL; DR: IT WORKED! many thanks to you, i googled a lot but your suggestion went over my head.
below info added for completion 's sake so it potentially could help future users:
meanwhile in addition to my post, i dirty flashed the original ROM (same version) without wiping anything.
i suspected that it would just bypass the PIN and lock, not the whole lockscreen.. i know both the pin and pattern, it just crashes after entering the correct pattern.
I did your google search which linked me to https://forum.xda-developers.com/android/software-hacking/remove-lockscreen-recovery-t3530008
indeed. the pattern is successfully removed leaving me with just the 'swipe up to unlock' screen. i expected that it would crash after swiping up but it went to the homescreen thankfully!
some notes. As per guide i indeed deleted the below 3 files using the explorer in TWRP located in /data/system:
locksettings.db
locksettings.db-shm
locksettings.db-wal
however the files password.key and pattern.key were not present at all but in my case it didn't make any difference.

Galaxy S5 DUOS Android 6.0.1 Google Services Framework Stopping

Hello Everyone!
All of a sudden today my trusty old Galaxy S5 DUOS phone started throwing the Google Services Framework has stopped error.
I have tried all guides I've been able to find on this and it says to go in under the App settings and clear all the data, but when I try this it crashes.
I can't get into the Play Store to check for updates either.
Is there a way to fix this? Update framework and store by a TWRP flashable zip or something like that?
Any help that you can offer would be much appreciated!
I could try to backup everything and then flash with Lineage OS or something similar in the way of a more modern OS but I can't say I'm crazy about the idea. It would take a VERY long time to do so the best thing would be if one could "just" fix the problem at hand without needing a full reinstall.
The phone is rooted with SuperSU and has TWRP recovery installed on it.

Did you use root permissions to remove or disable any system apps? If so, you may have disabled/uninstalled a system app that relies on Google Services to work, this would cause the "Services framework has stopped" error. Re-enabling or reinstalling the app or apps would fix the issue.
But....
First, try booting into TWRP then select the "Wipe" option, then select "advanced wipe", then select ONLY the cache partition and the dalvik cache, then swipe the slider to initiate the wipe. When you reboot the device, try seeing if you can use Playstore to update your Google apps, you may have to update more than one of them.
If that doesn't work, you can try downloading the most up to date Gapps.zip for your specific architecture and flash it in TWRP, wipe cache partition and dalvik partition(DO NOT FACTORY RESET IN TWRP) after flashing the Gapps.zip then reboot into system.
If that doesn't work, you may have to flash your stock firmware, this will remove root and TWRP, you'd have to root the device again and install TWRP again. If you flash the firmware, make sure to use the HOME CSC to preserve your user data during the flash.

Thank you very much for the suggestion, but I tried all of it and it did nothing to help the situation. HOWEVER, I started looking at DeGoogling the phone and putting in MicroG instead, and one of the steps in the process was putting in Magisk (instead of SuperSu) ...
When I got to removing the Xposed Framework ... and rebooted the phone, it optimized all the apps on the phone, and then.... booted, no crashing Google Play Framework anymore, I could run Play Store and update my apps - everything....
SO.... Xposed Framework caused the Google Play Framework to crash constantly (all of a sudden)??

Thank you very much for the in-depth and very helpful instructions on how to get the phone working again, however as you can see in the reply further down I managed to get it back to working properly again by... as I understand it -- removing SuperSU and the Xposed Framework.
After I did this and rebooted the phone it started optimizing all the apps of the phone and then ... everything worked as normal again. But I have printed out the instructions/suggestions you gave me for future reference if I happen upon something similar. So once again Thank You very much!

You should be able to have root and Xposed and use the device without issues. There is a way to make it all work together, you just need to figure out exactly why the issue was occurring.
Everything seems to be rock solid right now after uninstalling Xposed Framework (same thing happening on my mom's Samsung Tab S which also had Xposed Framework installed)... I used it mainly to remove the ads on Youtube, and since Youtube Vanced came into existence.... I don't really need Xposed anymore. So all is good

Question Upgrading to 12 from 11 on magisk rooted device.

I rooted this device (model XT2131-1 TMO) while it was still on the android 11 using magisk method (currently on v25.2) and it runs fine honestly but when playing games every time the system update window appears it will completely boot me out of said game. I always selected not now( as I know updates break root if you just update) but I wanted to try and just update it and work on rooting that version after but then I receive "Package Verification Failed" notice and nothing happens. After so many attempts of selecting "not now" it will completely stop for a few weeks then start popping up again. So far this is absolutely the only issue I have ATM. More an annoyance really. Is there a way to completely disable that system update notification from appearing entirely or where should I look to restore, update, and then reboot on Android 12? I'd prefer just get rid of the update popup as everything else works fine. I'd appreciate any help thank you.
I also just remembered I've asked this in another thread but in this one im asking more about preferably disabling the system update notification entirely which will fix my main issue of it.

Solution: flash current stock kernel and run update again. You can grab updated stock kernel from RSA and patch and regain root

You can't delete it but you can certainly freeze it find an app like SD maid on Google Play you can freeze all the update apps and associated dll files there's about six or seven of them
I've still got an older pro version of that actually. Ty I'll look into that.
I'm seeing two under sdmaid. Both say frozen already. Which one is the actual android system update app pls?

Yes but there is android system update and then Motorola system update. I've disabled/froze(yes using sd maid and other root accessed app managers separately so as not to mess up anything else) both and their services/triggers (anything linked to ether) each at a time for a couple days and both at the same time and still appears constantly. Only thing I can think of is to completely reset to full stock,go to 12 and reboot ....
Try to disablw this application. i read that this help. I do not vouch for it, I’m not responsible for what happens due to it.

Look for an app called preference manager on Google Play.
Of course it'll require root.
Select each individual app it'll take you to the XML file it creates.
Look for all the timer entries and change them to zero basically make a mess out of it if you will.
As long as you've disabled all the receivers that should stop the app from Auto Wake
