Silence motifications and app sounds but not calls and vibration - General Questions and Answers

Hi, I have a Xiaomi Mi 8 (updated to the latest MIUI version) and I'm trying to silence every sound of my phone but not calls.
I also really need the vibration because I often hear it and I also put the phone in my pocket.
I tried with the "Do not disturb" mode but it deactivate the vibration and some sounds are still enabled, also setting the notification sound to "nothing" is not good because apps sounds remain activated.
Do you know a way to do that? I could also use third party apps or root my phone.

[Q] how can I *ENABLE* system sounds within silent mode?

Everywhere I look, people are trying to silence all their system sounds with or without using silent mode. My wish, however, is quite the opposite.
I want to be able to have system sounds (lock / unlock / touch sounds, etc.) ON while having notifications and rings set to SILENT.
Even specialized apps like Ultimate Sound Control have system and ringer sounds linked. Can't mute or enable one without the other.
And I don't want to set ringer to silent and all notifications to silent and then increase volume. No, that would not be practical. I want to be able to use silent mode toggle to turn ringer/notification sounds and all ON when needed.
Am I the only weird one around? Is everyone so determined about this that Android has no possibility to do this?
Thank you if you have any solutions. My N5 is rooted, by the way.
Don't think it's possible. Sorry.

How do you mute Media volume with the rest of the audio sliders?

I have the T-mobile S7.
Ever since I got my S7 when I have my phone on silent or vibrate, when an email comes in with my Gmail the notification sound plays. I have work email on my phone, but those new emails don't play through when on silent. Some other notifications also play through. I think from Google Hangouts and TXT messages. And I think Visual Voicemail notifications.
I can't seem to find anyone talking about this in my research. I have had several OTA updates from T-mobile and the issue is still there. I can't seem to figure out why some things have notifications that sound when the phone is in silent and vibrate mode. I have never had a phone do this before.
UPDATE: 2016.04.10
I still have the issue. I attached a screenshot of what is going on. The Media volume slider is not muting when I switch to Vibrate or Silent modes. The phone has had several OTA updates since I bought it and this still doesn't get fixed. I have the Moto G 3rd gen with Marshmallow as well and it doesn't have this issue. never had a phone with this issue. I am getting really tired of the work around, which is to manually mute and unmute the Media volume which takes several steps each.
I have two S7's and both have this issue.
Also, please don't suggestion the Do Not Disturb feature. Unless there is a way to have a simple toggle on and off of that feature with a pre-set of Total Silence, that solution does not help. So insane that silent mode is NOT silent!
Looks like I can toggle the DND shortcut and have moved it near the Mute/Sound/Vibrate button. Set DND to Total Silence. But still researching to see if the settings I use in the toggle affect the scheduled DND settings. As I only want Total Silence with the toggle, but at night I want my custom DND settings via the Scheduled DND.
Use macrodroid, e-robot or any other tasker-like app.
For MacroDroid, this particular macro does NOT require root:
1) Trigger volume button down, continue
2) Action Set music volume to media slider value 0
3) Constraint ringer volume is silent or vibrating
The above works ONLY when you use the volume down button. When the ringer volume reaches 0, it will also zero the media volume. It won't work if you use the Sound mode to change the ringer to silent or vibrate. You can program another macro to do the un-mute as well.
There are also other ways, such as through macro that is triggered by screen off, and change the media volume to 0 using the constraint of ringer volume being 0. This will work with Sound mode or DND, just not not immediately but when the screen turns off.
Sorry, I am looking for a stock method to this issue. Otherwise I think the general forum area would be a better place for me to ask about 3rd party apps. Right now I am still testing the DND options now that I see that I can toggle DND from the pulldown without having to choose DND options each time.
Darn it! DND is useless for this issue. If I leave the Sound toggle alone and on Sound, the DND does not affect things like unlock sound, key sounds, etc. etc. Silences calls and alarms, but the "total silence" option is NOT total silence. So I am still looking for a stock way to toggle mute and unmute of the entire sound system.
I just purchased a Note S8 and I'm having the same problem. There needs to be a simple and instant mute button so that if you need to mute in a hurry you can. If I am not overlooking it, it's ridiculous that they don't have them on these phones. I am used to using a Motorola and they always have had an easy way to quickly turn the sound off of my phone. The only way with this one is to hold down on the volume button and with a case it makes it even more difficult. I guess I'll just sit on it. $1000. Right.

Yeah, it's crazy. I now have 7.0.1 on my S7 and still no quick mute toggle with stock Android. And all my previous Android phones had a mute function that muted everything. Holding the volume button down does not mute all sounds. You have to press up or down, then mute the first slider which mutes all but Media, and then mute the media slider. THEN it's full silent. But I don't understand why it doesn't mute ALL sliders with 1 toggle via stock like it did on other phones.
the issue is still there on Galaxy S9....so freakin annoying
@sdho , yeah, it's insane! Android Oreo 8.x and we still don't have the simple mute function we had with much older versions of Android! By default muting should mute the Media slider too! If people want to only mute other sliders, THAT is what should then require the 2nd shade expansion to pick individual sliders. But 1 touch mute and vol down all the way, should mute ALL sliders by default.
I don't understand the programming decision to make the default the way it is!
PS: I now have the S9 Plus since launch.
Solved!
Just downloaded "Media Mute". Solved everything right away.
Thanks Choobaka, I now have Android Oreo 8.x with the Galaxy S9 Plus and still no improvement to stock 1 -swipe and touch mute. But thanks to your suggestion, while this can't be solved stock. At least it can now be solved without root and without any odd permissions. Thanks a ton. Trying it out now. So far it looks like that will do the trick for me.

Is this a bug or a feature?

I'll submit the question here as I think this is more kind of a debate rather than a question.
This is something I didn't get many answers neither from users nor xiaomi itself.
Prior to December 2019 my WhatsApp, telegram, signal, etc. calls were vibrating when Do Not Disturb was set up to:
When do not disturb is on - Allow calls - Allow from anyone.

Click to collapse
After that they stopped vibrating under this very same scenario which greatly affected the functionality of my device.
Now I asked WhatsApp personally about why it doesn't vibrate even if WhatsApp is set up to vibrate.
They said:
The vibrations that you find within WhatsApp work differently based on what type of device you are using. For all devices, if your phone is set to vibration mode and your WhatsApp vibration settings are off, the phone setting will override the WhatsApp settings. In other words, your phone will still vibrate or vice versa.
Note that manufacturers may have their own unique vibration settings that may interfere with the WhatsApp notifications. We have no way to control this from our end.

My settings are:
WhatsApp Calls - Vibrate - Default.
System settings - Sound - Vibrate for calls - On.
Click to collapse
Given that whatsapp says that each manufacture does what it wants...
What is the right behaviour for this configuration? If they indeed introduced a bug, what can I do if they keep ignoring me?
I attached video proof of the current behavior.
I have been controlling vibration with tasker for a long time, because vibration does(did?) not respect DND, so to me it is a feature that I wasn't aware of.
I guess everyone has a different opinion on how things should work, but to me, DND means no sounds or vibration. If I wanted no sound but with vibration, then that is volume 0.

It's very well written on do not disturb settings that it will mute everything except the ones you allow!

Volume 0 would vibrate for messages too. My config makes the phone ring and/or vibrate only for calls. In fact DND can be customized to everyone's taste and works fine for regular phone calls when "allow all calls" is configured (they respect sound and vibration). The issue appears because third app calls respect the rules for sound but completely disable vibration.

Yes, indeed. In fact regular calls respect the exception like a charm for both volume and vibration. The issue is that third party app calls respect volume rules but stop vibrating altogether. To me it's a bug but I wanted to hear from others.

dnd mode not working if allow all incoming call problem. Any other solution?

I'm using xiaomi mi 10 pro global (miui 12).
Xiaomi don't allow phone call from anyone in dnd, whenever you enable "allow call from anyone" the dnd will allow ALL notification sound and vibrate.
If I set to starred contact only, dnd work normally.
Someone from xiaomi actually stated that this is not a bug. It is designed that way.
Anyone have a workaround solution for this without root or unlocked the phone?
Basically what I want is to mute all notification but allow call to ring from anyone.
I tryed on MIUI 12.2.2.0 China stable and it works well. Xiaomi Mi10 phone.
I turn on DND and allow phone calls from anyone and it works. SMS or any notification sound or vibration is off only calls not

Notification sounds not working.

I have 2 apps installed, WhatsApp and Ring Doorbell that are not giving me sound notifications. For me the volume on this device is not very loud. I work in a noisy environment and need loud volume. My last phone (Note 5) I did that sound mod changing the volume xml file and used very loud notification sounds (mp3) and it was perfect. So I took those sound files from the Note and put them into the Mi 10 Ultra in Ringtones folder and set them. Since then I get no sound notifications.
I did some digging and found an app 'Hidden Settings for MIUI' and set it to 'play sounds', but that didn't fix the issue either. I'm completely new to MIUI and am all out of ideas. Its strange, but when I open the phone, the WhatsApp notification sound beeps to let me know I have a message, but I have to open the phone, if its sitting in my pocket I get no notification. Ring Doorbell is not working at all as far as notifications go. Nothing. If someone who knows MIUI could give me some help it would be greatly appreciated.
Edit: shouldn't have wasted my time
That's it for me. SIM out and back to my Note 5. Great phone but the software is atrocious, if I had of known the nightmare this would be I wouldn't have bought this phone. So now it goes back into its box where it will stay, 6 months 1 year I don't care, until there is an alternative to using this absolute mess that MIUI is. A real shame, but something as simple as a couple of apps really is the deal breaker for me. Maybe I'll sell it? Global ROM? Who knows ....but for now its a useless device that can't even run a couple of apps? That is as bad as it gets. Its privacy settings are the worst I have ever seen. Disguised as 'protecting you' but in reality its the other way around. If I wanted to be locked out and locked in and locked down I would have bought an Apple iPhone. Xiaomi makes good phones, but their MIUI software is the worst I have ever seen. I would not recommend anyone buy this device.
I actually was facing this problem and found out a fix. You just have to turn vibration on. For some reason some apps don't make a sound if it doesn't have vibration on for notifications.

I have Ring doorbell and Whatsapp working (sort of) as sometimes they are delayed.
I had to change settings/notifications/ring and set rules for notification as important and also make sure all notification settings are on
Then fo to settings/apps/manage apps/ring and make sure Autostart is on and set permissions to make sure the bottom 4 are set to green ticked. Then make sure restrict data usage set to WLAN and Mobile data and then set Battery Saver to No restrictions.
Hopefully it will work after that. Do similar things to other apps that may not be making notifications correctly.
PS I'm using China ROM
So I had this issue and figured out a sure way to get sound notifications working.
You just have to turn vibration on in the subtype of notification for said specific app. If you don't want vibration on all notifications for that specific app turn it off otherwise.
Here is the thing that helped me with the same notification issue! Just google "xiaomi mi 10 ultra notifications" and in the top 5 links you'll probably find an article from:
theunpopulartraveller. It explains the settings, and they need to be accessed by pressing and holding the app icon ^ app info.
Don't give up, try and you'll get the sounds from needed apps back. And ye, actually now I find the way Xiaomi did it much more convenient: I just turned on notifications for 2 apps, and all the rest are silent, while previously I had to turn off all the rest of the apps (much more than 2, definitely) not to get disturbed by all the bull****.
