Weirdest thing I've seen: Samsung SM-T580 power button doesn't work by itself but does work to reboot into recovery - General Questions and Answers

The headline says most of it but I'll spell it out here more clearly...
If I press the power button by itself absolutely nothing will happen. If I press the power button with one of the volume buttons, the tablet will reboot as I might expect, and go into either recovery or bootloader.
I ran a hardware test(TestM) and it doesn't detect the power button being pressed at all so why in the world does it work when pressing the volume buttons.
This thing works fine otherwise but this is the most confusing thing I think I've seen. I'm not sure that I have a repair place local that'll fix the switch even if that's the actual problem but I don't want to buy another because this one has been working perfectly fine otherwise.
Any ideas? I'm all ears.

Is it like that in safe mode?

I haven't had any luck getting it into safe mode. I don't know if me using a custom rom has anything to do with that but so far everything seems to rely on me powering all the way down and then powering up via the power button before pressing the volume down button, and since I can't JUST press the power button, I don't know if that's interfering with the process there.

The most obvious suspect is the firmware if it's been doing this since install.
Could be a switch, connector or mobo failure.
Power port PCBs can do strange things when they fail.

No, it just started probably in the past couple weeks but I only noticed what was going on today. I was figuring it was likely the mobo or something because if the switch itself were failing then it simply wouldn't work. I guess I'll likely have to repurpose this thing and buy another tablet. Damn shame but I can't have it fail on me while I'm out and about.

It may be a double pole switch. One set of contacts aren't working.

Good point. I hadn't thought of that.

Without a circuit schematic you're just guessing unless you examine it directly.
It looks like it's modular mess. Try getting a replacement set on Ebay. This may take some looking.
Was it ever dropped/hit on the buttons?

So you hard wired the switch to those points?
A solder failure on the switch or pcb trace or did you bypass the pushbutton switch?

Dpad-right button unresponsive

Hi ppl. I have a problem(and I think, not just me) with Right arrow/way underneath the display. It is absolutely unresponsive very often, suddenly it works normally. It seems, that the touch sensitive surface has an unstable pressure threshold in this area. It is very annoying,so knows someone any solution? Thanks in advance.

I have exactly the same problem, really annoying it is. Cannot play games with a right arrow that works half the time
Try to blow in centre button.
try this, use left thumb to hit the right button. Its really annoying, it seems the left right cursor pad it too sensitive and must be pressed at the correct angle
I'm also having this problem.
Do you guys know if it's a hw problem or it can be fixed with one of the custom roms?
Thanks

No, I only found this thread. I didn't find anything in the wiki either.
Thanks for those links.
Oops! .. I thought it only happens with me, there might be some problem in my phone, as it felt down from 6 feets just after 2 days from the day I bought it.
well it's really annoying..
hope to get a solution. (I think the hardware button is not manufactured properly).. (I might be wrong )
I have the exact problem!!!
Does anyone knows where to buy a replacement keypad??? I have been searching for it for days now with no luck. and all I could find is this one http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=120488502946&ssPageName=ADME:X:AAQ:US:1123 and this one https://www.gsm4world.us/htc-touch-...rane-pcb-repair-d-03019_405.html#remote-tab-1 and both have the same price almost $50.00 for a couple of buttons. have anyone found it cheaper???
Have you tried the HTC debug tools to see if the navipad is registering touches in that area?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=2511016
You'd be looking for the 'NavDbgTool.exe' in that zip. Just extract the whole zip to somewhere on your phone and run NavDbgTool. You should see some lines and dots moving around on your screen. If you are able to see the lines moving when you move your thumb, it would mean that your navipad is working just fine.
Try running this program when you're unable to press the left or right buttons and see if you get different results.
My guess is that the buttons are just fine, but where you are putting your finger isn't exactly where HTC thought it should go in order to actually 'press' the left or right buttons. If the sensors and underlying buttons weren't actually working, you wouldn't be able to press end call or back either.
Hope this helps!
If you are new to the phone try those suggestions above. If this has just recently started happening when the phone used to work fine, its broken. The capacitive sensor HTC put in is junk, I had mine break 2 times. Got it fixed through warranty. It is not a software issue, you can hard reset, change ROMs, etc. It won't fix it, it is physically broken, and you can confirm it with the NavDbgTool.

Touch screen

I have the HTC One S 3uk version. Ive rooted and have super user access. The problem i have is when using the phone the bottom part of the screen were the menu button is stops responding (the part just above the home button) is there an update or fix for this thanxs.
Reverse it back to stock and if those buttons on touch screen are still unresponsive return the phone in order to get a new one, that's the only thing i can think of at the moment.
i had a post about this but no one responded i just have to lock my screen and when i unlock it again it's responsive . . it's really annoying cause the keypad i use the spacebars where the menu is and half the time i'm texting my space bar doesn't work cause of it and i'm unrooted on stock too so idk bro
im going to email htc and see what they say about it
Same problem here on a European version. The 3 buttons at the bottom freeze, my workaround is locking/unlocking.
It seems like one of the buttons decide to stay depressed, as on one occasion, after locking the phone, I discovered half a dozen of screen captures (Power + Home)
I had the problem before and after rooting the phone, don't have a clue of what triggers it.
here is a screen shot of the affected area and i will let you know what htc have said once i hear from them

Hello,
thanks for linking PulpZillas Thread. I wish to encourage anyone with symptoms like screenshots on SD and randomly misbehaving buttons, unresponsive buttons etc. to check that thread ExDr linked too. That problem has a name but many people seem to have difficulties to identify it and thus find the right thread to post to.
I had it once. Reboot and its gone. All is ok for now since last wednesday morning. It comes after rooting and unlocking bootloader.

Yeah, found it after posting, sorry for that.
I'm in China, bought the phone here only to discover last week it's a development model, so my complaint report will be immediately voided by HTC.
Will try anyway, just to be one voice stronger ;-)

[Q] Capacitive button light not working..fixable?

Hey guys, I was wondering what my options are at this point. One of the lights has stopped working...the button still works though. Will Costco/ATT replace the phone? I'm almost positive they will but does anyone know how long they take? I cant be without a phone for more than a day.

Yes they will replace it. This was seen on some of the first ones that came out. Just ask if they will just trade you a new one on the spot and make sure they let you turn it on to check for any other hardware defects.
Edit: this is assuming your hardware warranty is intact

Yes it is. Thanks! But I doubt they will give me a NEW one. Its been over 3 months.
Same thing happened to my AT&T HOX, It was working normaly then suddenly the recent apps light stopped, the button works perfectly tho...
I did factory reset, cache and davlink cache erase, changed rom and tried almost everything, the light started working again but dimmer, not as bright as home or back...
Today the home key backlight stopped working too (its like a virus spreading) and i got them to work after every reebot and when I answer a call but again, both backlights are dimmer than the original...
What did they say? could you replace the phone? Im still thinking its a software issue rather than hardware... maybe Im wrong!
Please if you find someway to fix it let me know! I will do so too!
Good luck!

No it was a hardware issue. Well at least that's what Costco said. I also factory resetted RUU'd and all that . They are amazing! After 90 days they still gave me a new one no questions asked!
EDIT: If your out of warranty (It hasn't been a year since the phone came out so that's not even possible but oh well) you can take the back off the phone and press the LED panel under the buttons down firmly and they start working again! I tried this on my new one (I know..i'm stupid )

[Q] Power Button Stuck

I'm about to try the soldering technique on my Infuse's power button but I have some questions before I give it a go.
My infuse has had this problem before but I temporarily fixed it by dropping the phone. Then it happened again so I tapped the power button against the corner of my desk which also fixed the problem. Now the stuck power button is back again, but this time I actually opened the phone up entirely to see what the problem was. There seems to be none..turning on my phone without the plastic casing containing the power button and volume rocker did NOT work. So my phone boot loops even without anything "jamming" the power button down. So is the issue with the stuck power button really resolvable? In MrKickstand's guide here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1996709 I've tried everything except for the soldering technique. He notes there are four spots of solder that need to be melted. I see three. What do I do? This is my last ditch effort before I call up the local cell phone repair shop.
Edit: Pulling the power button with tweezers didn't do anything.

My power button stopped working - Man is this ever a challenge

This is a bit of a rant topic.
My phone case is one of those hard, yet bendy plastic cases.
Simple. $10 bucks. i think i grabbed it from a kiosk in a mall.
The case is a tight seal around my phone - as expected
however, through my 12 months of playing with the phone, taking the case on and off, hard reboots etc, my power button is officially unusable.
The button itself is stuck in the phone. it's as if it pressed it down and it never came back up.
This makes life with my One X very difficult.
turning the screen on and off is difficult. it's now extremely sensitive. just brushing the tip of my finger over the top of the phone turns the screen on and off multiple times.
I can't press and hold the button to bring up the reboot menu - although it does work sometimes (seems like the lower the phone's temp, the more likely it works)
Just makes life difficult. Sometimes a ROM needs a nice reboot, and it's near impossible for me to do so!
I've resorted to opening up a command line and giving it the ol' reboot command, but goddamn!
Im now officially waiting on the Nexus 5
Anyone else with similar experiences?
It's almost definitely caused by the cheap case you put on the phone. For rebooting, you could use an app called Quick Boot, it's a simple app which has options for rebooting (system/bootloader/recovery/power off).

One thing i never saw mentioned was that hte camera is reeeeally glued on there, so you need to pull pretty hard.
I didnt see that in any video
Anyways, popped the thing off and even took my power button right off from the hosuing. Doesnt seem like thres anything i can do
i think the button on the actual mother board is stuck in
