Greetings all!
I've been a very satisfied and loyal supporter of Ting for nearly two years now. However, I've decided to get myself a 32gb Nexus 5 from the playstore (arrives tomorrow, yaay!) with the hopes that I'll eventually be able to BYOSD to Ting. For now, I'm trying to settle on an ATT MVNO since TMO coverage is awful around here for miles.
Here is my usage on Ting:
under 100 mins
no texts (I use Google voice for SMS)
150mb average data use
I pay about 15-25ish per month depending on usage.
What I'm looking for in an ATT MVNO:
Decent Customer Service
Unliminted (or even decent amount) SMS/MMS/VOICE
Decent amount of data, say 250mb-1gb.
Reliable autopay and number porting.
No more than $40/month
I would like to port my Ting number once I feel "safe" and satisfied with the ATT MVNO.
I'm thinking of going with red pocket for now since I can get a free sim from callingmart.com with 39.99 of service. However, I'm nervous about the repeated complaints about inconsistent data throttling with Red Pocket. If I like the ATT service, I'd like to port my "real number" over to AIO because I've heard they have better CS, LTE, and a more reliable data throttle of 256kbps after the plan cap. I wish they had more LTE data (in my price range), but I can deal with the 256kpbs throttle if I breach 250mb.
I like the larger data pools of Airvoice and RP but the strange stories about having to call in to reset data or restore service are unsettling. I've never had an issue with my Ting service. Ting CS kind of spoils you.
Am I being paranoid?
Aside from you owning a nexus 5, I think this thread belongs over at the Howard forums because it has nothing to do with the Nexus 5

Dang, was wondering the same thing.
I'm in the same boat, but migrating from Sprint. I was hoping to hear what the community had to say on the matter of AT&T MVNOs. XDA is my trusted source. :fingers-crossed:
I would also like to see what the community here thinks on this matter. I'm currently with Sprint, was considering Republic Wireless, but when the Nexus 5 came out decided that I prefer that to the MotoX and so was looking at Ting. Hopefully they will come around to allowing a Play Store Nexus on Ting, but until then I'd sure like to get away from my $85 per month plan I have with Sprint towards something in the $20-$40 range. ATT and Sprint have decent coverage where I am, T-Mobile is not an option, unfortunately.

I would highly recommend Aio Wireless. Their $40 plan fits all of your criteria, and I've been really satisfied with them after 2 months. I currently use the $70 plan and the speeds and coverage are great. I would also recommend installing their MyAio app to keep track of data/pay/etc and their Visual Voicemail app which is really great to use. I can't comment on their Autopay feature because I like to manually pay my bills to keep track of where all of my money goes, but their payment method via app and desktop is painless and quick.
About 18 months ago, I left Sprint for Straight Talk. They have everything unlimited* for $45. You get unlimited 2.5GB of 4G (LTE & HSPA+ for at&t SIM, HSPA+ for T-Mobile SIM), then 2G until the end of the month. I only had to call them once after i ported a secondary Google Voice number to them (I couldn't add a service card online). I read that the customer service is bad, but it seemed fine to me. I usually get around 5Mbps, but sometimes its faster/slower too.
I'll second Straight Talk. I've had no problems whatsoever with them. I did have to call to activate my SIM card (the online process messed up somehow), and I had to talk to the manager as the first rep had no idea what I was talking about, but overall it's been great.
I have the XT 1034 (US GSM) and am currently using Straight Talk. So far I've been pretty happy with their service, but this last month they throttled me down just a few days into my month and it sucks so I'm shopping around for alternatives.
I've been using ST for several months and rarely get throttled even though I'm clearly over my "cap" (ST gives you 2.5 gb of "high speed" then throttles down to 2g speeds) from earlier research before settling on ST I've found that this is pretty standard amongst most MVNO carriers, but ST seems to be fairly lax in enforcing it. Perhaps I was unlucky this time, perhaps I finally used enough to catch their eye, who knows.
So does anyone else have any suggestions? What I'm looking for is an unlimited 3g plan, preferably without throttling if possible. It looks like Metro PCS might be an option, but I can't find much information on their 3g unlimited.

I'm on MetroPCS. I'm using the $40 plan, and haven't been throttled; last month I used about 2.6 Gig. They see the XT1034 Moto G as a 3G phone. Here in the Dallas area I have great service.

ok if your in a big city or have decent sprint coverage look into republic wireless.
unlimited wifi/3G for $25 per month phone is a customised moto g.
Has anyone here used Project Fi and/or Ting on their Moto X Pure?
I realize from this other thread that there seems to be somewhat limited capabilities on Project Fi (limited to T-Mobile as a sub-carrier; can't switch to Sprint; No WiFi calling). But I'd guess in that situation, your phone is essentially just operating on T-Mobile's network, and is fucntionallty equivalent to a T-Mobile phone, right? The other option is Ting GSM, which also runs on the T-Mobile network.
Has anyone tried either of these services on the Moto X Pure, and can comment? I'd ideally like to go with Project Fi, for it's better billing model and international data roaming support. I'm pretty much sick of paying $110/month to Verizon Wireless for minutes and data that I don't really use (I'm on WiFi all the time, and use my phone as a pocketable computer more than a phone).
I've been using Ting for several years now on multiple different phones, including the Moto X Pure. Ting offers both CDMA and GSM service, but you have to pick one, it can't dynamically switch between them like Fi can. I've had no problems at all getting Ting working with this phone, and I HIGHLY recommend their service. If you are interested in Ting feel free to use this referral code, it will give you (and me) a $25 credit https://zqh79oqpd1.ting.com/. My monthly bill is usually between $30 and $40, with 2 active devices.
Lol don't we love referrals I posted a question on howardforums in cricket section then I got few pms with refferals. If you want to rely on cheap service then go for it even att prepaid or T-Mobile is better.

I was been on ting for about a month, and it worked great, although I am still waiting on band 12/VOLTE support which should be coming out from motorola soon. The data connection was good enough that I was using more data than I expected, so I just switched over to MetroPCS(TMob) which is $60 for unlimited(21GB).
One irritation with Ting was that tethering only worked on 3g. Which required manually setting the phone to 3g, after enabling the hotspot. You can play with the radio preferences by dialing "*#*#INFO#*#*" from the dialer. Although I have read that you should never mess with the radio Band setting, particularly outside the US.
MetroPCS in contrast does not allow tethering unless you purchase a metro branded phone.
I was able to work around the metro pcs tethering restriction by adding a "tether_dun_required=0" entry to the sqlite provider.settings file, and now it works perfect on LTE with the stock hotspot software.
That workaround may also enable LTE tethering on ting.
So far I am getting great speeds even indoors of about 25 Mbps most places, however the tower at my work is much slower and has typically been 3-7Mbps, but Friday was an abysmal ~1 Mbps.
In some testing I've seen, MetroPCS is about 26% slower than TMobile branded because it gets reduced prioritization. However, it is not throttled like cricket, which performs 78% slower than ATT, and is officially capped at 8Mbps.
If I run into continued periods with poor performance, I may spring the extra $20 for TMobile branded.
Been using Ting for 5 months and it's pretty great. Support is always helpful. I pay an average of $28 per bill and since I was on Sprint previously my service hasn't changed at all. They even randomly gave me a $25 credit which made one of my bills $3.75. Couldnt ask for more.
I use way to much data for these, tmobile has a sweet 30 dollar 5gb plan

Cricket is not bad either, normally it's 10gbs for 55 flat with auto pay, I got a promotional 20gb for 55. Which is on AT&T so been really happy with coverage

Yeah, I'm waiting till they do that promo again. Most likely will jump on it when they do.
I'm surprised nobody has mentioned straight talk. I pay $45 a month to run on AT&T's network with unlimited data high speed capped at 5GB. When they gave 3GB of high speed data I would go over occasionally and have to struggle for a few days with the speed equivalent of dial up, but since they started offering 5GB I haven't gone over.

According to carrier tests, cricket is 78% slower than branded ATT, with both reduced prioritization and a throttled 8Mbps cap. Unlimited(21GB) TMobile is available through MetroPCS for $60 which is full-speed(unthrottled) off the tower, but sees speeds 26% slower than TMobile branded do to reduced prioritization during heavy congestion.
If you have TMobile coverage in your area, you may consider this $5 upgrade. MXPE has promised the release of band 12/VOLTE support in the near term, so this should significantly improve performance in heavily shielded buildings, when released.

Already know of this, with the throttle I wouldn't use a fraction of the bandwidth, a better talking point would be that cricket runs me through a proxy which slows my server ping. I would not go try t mobile as I used them before and get no reception at work. Will pick a Sim if and when we get band 12

Get a Google Voice number and the Hangouts Dialer app. You can send and receive calls in the US for free using data or wifi. The call quality isn't great, but it's better than Skype (and Skype costs money.)
If anyone wants to try Ting, if you get a referral code and BYOD a Sprint phone on "Black Friday", you start off with $75 credit (usually it's only $25), so you can experiment all you want and not pay out of pocket for a month or three.
I purchased the Pixel from the Google store, and I'm pretty sure it will work on MetroPCS, I'm just hoping someone who knows a little more about how that aspect of the network works can give me a little more insight.
I'm getting a little sick of paying $130 a month for 1 phone with 16 GB of data, and that is after a 22% discount through work...

I'm confused if you're paying that much why don't you just switch to their parent network(T-Mobile). You'll get much more incentives on a better network for a lower price.

the $130 is my price on Verizon. MetroPCS is $60 a month flat for unlimited data, and it doesn't throttle you down after a certain amount used. My biggest concern was T-Mobile customers having priority on the towers over MetroPCS customers during high congestion. but my friend who has MetroPCS used his all day at the Minnesota State Fair, data, calls, whatever, and never had an issue. That's 200,000+ people in a little over a square mile area, if he wasnt having priority issues then, I doubt I ever will.
It's mostly a question of since I bought the Google version of the Pixel instead of the Verizon version, will I be able to just stick a MetroPCS simcard in it and and have it work.
Oh I see. Was very lost with pricing lol, but yes seeing that metro pcs is a true gsm carrier all the bands for their network should be on the pixel...
It should work just fine. My experience with metro in one of the largest cities in the country (Houston, TX) has been great. I haven't noticed any slower data performance or call drops than when I had TMo proper, and you still get all the TMo perks, like not charging for data for popular apps like Youtube and Spotify (I don't pay for unlimited).

I'll be doing unlimited so that I can use Playstation Vue mobile without issues, and to watch Red Zone once I find another cheap alternative (Going to hate giving up my $1.99 a month access to it through Verizon. Vue charges $39.99 for 6 months). I watched an hour of the Olympics while mobile once and used about 4 GB of data...
I am thinking about going this route... but want to be sure that the Pixel will work with all of the TMobile bands so i'll have good service as well as the Wifi Calling work. Anyone with MetroPCS and a Pixel able to confirm?

Should work just fine on both WiFi calling and even voice over LTE. The only band the pixel doesn't have is Band 71.

Do you know how important Band 71 is?
I ask because I first had a Verizon Branded V20 and brought it to T-Mobile.. The reception was fairly poor around my house.. would barely get 4g .. and seemed to be bouncing towers... but when I sold it and got a T-Mobile Branded V20.. the reception is tons better.. works great. So i just want to make sure Band 71 isn't a primary one and i'll go back to having bad service with a Verizon / Unlocked Pixel version.
Thanks!

Band 71 is only for extended LTE. Really isn't that big of a deal. Verizon branded phones are different they have bands that are sometimes locked for Verizon. The only real difference between the Verizon pixel and the pixel from google was the unlock able boot-loader. As for band 71 it's not deployed in some cities and depends on where you live. Th most important band is band 12 which the google pixel has. I've had the pixel for Verizon and never had any problems with service or even download speeds. As for band 71 not even the pixel 2 or the iPhone x have it so you really don't need to worry about it. It should work on Metro pcs, but i believe you need update your imei through the Metro pcs website.
I just picked up a pixel 1 in great condition yesterday and did carrier swap this morning by phone and it works very well. Go for it
Yep! The wife bought me one! So I was able to get it up and running on Friday... been using it all weekend! So far it seems to be working wonderful!
My v60 is now getting 5g in Sacramento and Folsom but not Citrus Heights. I started getting 5g signals la at week. The speed was slow, around 5Mbps, at first, and sometimes just didnt work. (Happens on both v60s on the account, but worked fine if you I switched back to ) but now I have not had it stop for a couple of days and im getting almost 100Mbps.

Consider yourself lucky. I had to disable 5G in Southern California so it would stop searching for a non-existent channel and kill the battery.

How did you disable 5G and did it make a real difference? I'm on the Verizon version and don't recall seeing that. I have zero interest in 5G, especially if I have to pay for it, so don't have it active on my account.

Just go in connection settings and choose LTE/3G/2G auto. Yes, I've noticed about an hour or more battery life by it not searching for non-existent 5G signals.
5G in South Sac. Yes sir
We have 5G where I'm at in a rural area. With my Note 10+ i got 10-12Mbps DL speeds on 4G and with the V60 I get around 36Mbps at home. In town the 5G jumps to 116Mbps but I turned 5G off as it was sucking battery, I can always turn it on if needed.

Not on their basic/entry level unlimited. We are on Go Unlimited, which is an unlisted loyalty plan. That, and the Start Unlimited plans do not include 5G. Considering their 5G coverage is still mostly non-existent and nowhere I'd be, no sense paying an extra $10/mo for nothing, and wasting battery if the phone is trying to hunt for it.
Well you should try t Mobile they way cheaper I'm only paying 120 for 3 lines all unlimited no throttling or nothing and I get free stuff every Tuesday and t Mobile has sprint merger done so service is just gonna get better and better and get to roam off us cellular and att and sprint and then I'm on jump on demand I can upgrade to any device and pay less in the long run I can upgrade every 30days if I want and then I got the LG v60 thinq dual screen for 600 so that's a very good deal and then t Mobile 5g is nation wide and then the sub 6 5g is very fast t Mobile has the fastest 4glte and 5g at the moment I be getting about 150 Mbps and then there mid range 5g is getting about 500 Mbps and then you don't get charged for having 5g bc 5g is all on there plans and then t Mobile is paying up to 450 per device if ya switch from Verizon or t Mobile

I'm paying $105 for Go Unlimited on 3 lines with Verizon. Speeds are plenty fast and I get coverage everywhere without roaming, never encounter congestion (not sure where you get that idea from) and currently a year of Disney+ free. I'm a trucker, so I'll take maximum coverage over anything. 5G speeds are just for bragging rights and of no real use on a phone. T-mobile is almost nothing but roaming where I drive, and Sprint was about the same when I had them.
If you are happy with your plan, great, but I'm happy with mine as well and have no desire to change.
