Default was 392 or something, I changed it to 500, nice, then I went for 5000, which was stupid, phone brick out, but fine after reset. Now I am at 650 dpi. I just wanted to know the limit. Can someone help?
Hello friends ... you have also seen this happen in every operating system .... When we moving any apps to sd card, their floating widgets were disable in the system ...... Is there a way to An application that is on an external card but Still keep its floating widgets active on the home screen? My android is 4.2.2 and rooted ... Of course, this has nothing to do with the system being rooted.

How Android's display is rendered depends on interplay of both the Screen Resolution and the Screen Density.
Android by default knows of these generalized densities :

So if you go beyond 640, say 800, your phone would crash?

Hi guys. Lets say I have a game or app and it lags cause of 1080p. (DO NOT answer like: This is not the resolution problem, because sometimes it is). Or just app is not supported by full HD. Anyway. Can I change the resolution for 1280x800 (Popular and from normal Transformer)? Does simply DPI change work? What to set? Please tell me. Just for the situation with 1280x800, I want ALL apps etc to run in this resolution. Will it lag anyway?
Sorry for my English.

Actually this is a pretty good question. Some games can't really be displayed in full HD because it just requires much better hardware than is in our devices. Lowering the resolution would probably be very helpful in improving the frame rate and consequently the game play.

I'd like to know an answer to this too. Is there a simple way to do this, such as installing an app from the Play Store?
perhaps paranoid android can help?

have not tried it myself.
I don't know of any app or setting that does what you want.
changing the dpi will do nothing to change the resolution. all that does is tell the OS the physical size of the pixels on the screen in an attempt to keep UI elements the same size across varying dpi screens.
for example, if you take an icon and display it on a regular screen and an hdpi screen with a straight 1:1 pixel mapping, it will appear much smaller on the hdpi screen. but if you tell the OS what the pixel density of each screen is, it then has a reference point and can then enlarge or shrink the icon so that it appears to be roughly the same physical size on both screens.
this is why lowering the dpi setting on your device shrinks everything. the OS thinks the pixels of the display are much larger than they are and shrinks the images to make them appear the intended size.
to change the display resolution, you'd first need a display driver that supports the lower resolutions, which we seem to have since we can output at 720p over hdmi. then you need a screen that will upscale lower resolutions to fullscreen (because you really don't want to play in a tiny 1280x720 window do you?) when non-native input (something other than 1920x1200) is received. i'm not sure if the display in the infinity is built to do that. they may have designed it thinking they will never run it at anything other than native resolution and left it at that.
who said anything about dpi?
Transformer TF300 update on TF700
Happily we have previous Transformers with almost the same hardware and lower screen resolution. Do I have FULL HD installing this (UP) ? I guess gaming on tablet with lower resolution is not possible, but maybe I can downscale the graphics with CHAINFIRE 3D. This is really cool feature. I think we all need it (now and in future). 1280x800 is acceptable res, and some games just won't work on FULL HD.

On my OnePlus 3T and my S7 Edge, there is an option in the Display settings that allows me to adjust the overall display size. It will reduce or increase the look and size of the entire display (smaller text, icons, menus). Does anyone know if the Mate 9 has the same menu, or anything similar?

If you enable that developer options, there is an option labeled "Smallest width", changing that will adjust the dpi and scale everything smaller or bigger.

FYI...The bigger the number, the smaller everything gets. It's the opposite of changing the density in the build prop. I personally like to leave my display size at large and set the smallest width value to 500.

In the settings menu, you tap...display then tap view mode. Then you can choose large, medium or small. I personally like changing the smallest width in developer settings.
Maybe is it possible to get tablet ui working here? Tryed to change dpi through dev options, but nothing, if i even set it to 600.
On Nexus 6p, i put that on 590 and had tablet ui in apps working.
You can just change it in the display mode setting no need to mess about I have it on small

I could get a quasi tablet looking interface for gmail app using a dpi of 800. By tablet looking interface I mean that, besides the usual list of emails, some of the options you get by swiping to right from left edge were present on the screen without swiping. For example I now had the option to switch email provider, (from gmail to aol) without swiping. The problem is that changing dpi to 800 hosed "settings". It would crash if I tried to open it. Fortunately the dpi did not stick when I rebooted. For those that use Dolphin browser, by changing dpi to 480 (from the default 432) you can get a 4 by 4 grid of icons for speed dial (instead of the 3 by 3 that comes by default setting of dpi).
Personally, I would not want my global dpi to be 800. I would just want certain apps to run with higher dpi. Normally I do this with the Xposed module App Settings. But, as AFAIK, that is not possible on nougat at this point. If someone knows how to modify an app to change it's individual dpi setting please do chime in!
guys I'm trying to reach the best DPI setting so i would like to know what you guys are using. thanks
403
360 with Small font size.
380. Best for me.

What are the settings Small, Default, Large in "Display Size" equivalent to in actual DPI?
I run in the 'Small' display size setting with default font size.

Me too.
I saw somewhere in seething a dpi seething, but never touched, i only set up "small" in display size.
QUESTION:
use smaller screen size and/or dpi will consume more battery while screen active?
guys I've found my perfect DPI settings 401, try out!

Answering my own question:
Small: 423 dpi
Default: 360 dpi
Large: 320 dpi
A 5.5" 1080p screen pixels are actually 401 dpi so would the 'correct' settings for the 100% Android stock experience be 401 dpi with default font size?
401, who is the "natural" dpi for a 5.5 inch display full hd, seems much cleaner and defined compared to the 423 default minimum dpi.
I may sound crazy but I use 500 dpi. Initially I had set to smallest which I later turned it up to 500 after finding it could be changed in the developer options. I have a lot of real estate on my phone now. It kinda feels I'm using my computer on my phone and since I do a lot of coding everyday, it feels natural. Give it a shot. It may feel weird, but give it a shot.
I set mine to 420, which translates to 411 when I checked back in the Display settings

Hi,
what is optimal DPI in your opinion, for the OP7 Pro?
And how does variable screen resolution affect DPI set in settings? Times used to be easier when display resollution was fixed at 1080p. Do one needs to disable this autochanges in settings to keep table image size?
I used to have either 390 or 400 DPI set virtually all the time on my Oneplus 3, Oneplus 5 and Oneplus 6T... But with this unnecessarily high resolution that is, absurdly, used only sometimes, I would like to hear your experiences.
Thanks
In OOS, I use the "Small" setting in display which comes to 470dpi
In AOSP, it is probably pretty similar. I basically move the slider in display down one notch. I am not currently on AOSP so I'm not positive what that setting is or the actual dpi value.
As the title says, you can use the adb wm size command to change the resolution, higher.
On most phones the resolution shipped is the highest available.
The RM3&3S ship stock 1080p but easily go up much higher.
Personally i recommend 1440x3120
wm size 1440x3120
In an su terminal or adb by pc.
This brings the display up to current phones resolution! (2k)
Enjoy!
As for performance and battery life, there is no noticeable NEGATIVE impact. However, when screen recording or streaming your screen, it can lag if your connection cant support the higher resolution. Native screen recording should be unaffected.

anyone has tested this ?
I have downloaded the DevCheck app and under HARDWARE tab > Graphics > Resolution, it is shown as 2340 x 1080. Does it mean that on adb I have to type wm size 3120x1440 instead ?
Thank you

On mine it works without issue at all and I can touch all the way up to 5k no problem, can you tell me your device model and rom?
Not to be rude or offend you but it is 100% user error on your side, the resolutions are accepted, and tested on A11 and A10 multiple devices. Also the icons smaller and all that is just based on DPI, resolution is the resolving power.

No, use 1440x3120 it matters what order the numbers are in.
Thankyou
Thank you. For the display to work properly, you also need to change the pixel density. We enter three commands in adb:
wm size 1440x3120
wm density 640
reboot
