Hi all, I am wondering if having a large amount of SMS will slow down phone and how one would go about managing message amount yearly? I ask this as I am about to a move to a Note 10+ from a Note 9 with 68000k messages. I know that's a lot. How can one periodically backup old messages and have the ability to view them on another device (PC or not). Almost like if I remember texting someone from a long time ago, and want to look them up, I can go to this app and find it.
I have to believe 68K stored messages might makes things low, even though it doesn't take much storage space no?
Not sure why anyone would text so much but in your old age it will be quit an accomplishment.
Sex and drugs are more memorable though
You can have up to a 1 tb SD card so have no fear about preserving your legacy.

Lol I have no issue with saving the messages somewhere. I am asking if having that many slows down the phone?
The other is if I were to remove the old messages, can I load them from another app and view them?

The 10+ running on Pie is a fast and very stable platform. I would avoid moving to Android 10 or 11 as you will lose functionality.
I can't speak for the text apps but I play movies and wav files stored on my SD card all the time.
Use the SD card as a data drive, and keep the apps on the internal memory.
The Lexar .5tb V30 card goes for $64 on Amazon and works right out of the box. Simply format in the phone first.

Well Karma Firewall losses it's ability to log and I use that daily.
Trusted overlay apps get the "security" ax too.
You lost these going to 10.
You can use a package disabler to block the updates carrier update apk or ask your carrier to disable on their end (they can).
Likewise Karma Firewall could probably block it but haven't tested that.
Home - Package Disabler
The only NON-root solution that let’s you disable any unwanted packages that come pre-installed / installed with your phone / tablet.

"Trusted" meaning you trust them.
Apps like Douple Tap can't run on Q and above or need to enabled after each reboot.
Double Tap has no internet connection so I'm really not concerned about it being spyware... but big sister Google thinks I need protecting.
There's also more restrictions on apps being able to collect system and app data, like Pie wasn't already too restrictive. This makes monitoring apps almost impossible. Guessing instead of knowing.
And the worst for last: cpu cycle eating Scope Storage makes this Apple wannabe nightmare complete.
The biggest security threat on the phone is data mining Google, how fking ironic.
Google sucks.

I love the UI, actually have Launcher 7 on my android.
I know the "apps" arguement will be over once Apollo releases.
Here is whats left that is holding me back.
I have to have an SD slot.
I am not a fan of the stock keyboard. I currently use Swiftkey and would like to see it on WP8.
Notification pull down bar. Need that to.
I am not familiar with what may be offered in Apollo, so if anyone can help convince me that my switch back to windows is sooner than later, me love you long time
Well its not really about 'convincing' you. No offense, but it's no skin off my ass if you don't switch over.
WP has pros and cons just like anything. Sounds like you're trying to come up with reasons to switch other than "I like it better", which would be unacceptable to the vast majority of Android users.

cool, launcher7 is great stuff !
as far as Apollo, just like -any- device not yet released, it is not real. It will become real when you walk into a store and see it on display, and can use it. Then, and only then will you know what it's options and capabilities are. I'm not saying you need to wait until then. Maybe buy a cheap phone off craigslist and enjoy it a while ?

The OP meant Windows Phone. Some people still call it that. Was interesting to see in the "I got smoked by a Windows Phone" segment a guy called it Windows Mobile.
Also, not only do you need features that Windows phone does not have, or has implementation in one or two phones (removeable sd), you are calling things that are Android specific.
Removeable SD - eliminates most WP7, iOS
Swiftkey - eliminates all but Android
Notification - eliminates all but iOS, Android
So even the combination of SD and pull down notification means Android is your only option. So just stick with Android.

If apps arguement will be over once Apollo releases, I think we can leave SwiftKey out - it's an app.
SD slot - Few Gen1 have them I think.
Notification pull down - will never be implemented in any of the WP build. It might mean copying iOS or Android and doesn't look like WP is (yet) trying to do that.
If you think you are one of those men Darwin talked about when he mentioned 'Adaptation' you will survive. Else Android is your choice.

sd slot? why?
stock keyboard is great, and i had swiftkey
notification bar? why? live tiles work great for notifications.
the only thing that sucks is the lack of good apps.
I need an SD slot because I have a 64 and 32 gig card with music. I dont want to stream my music
I can live with the rest
Well, RUMOR has it that Apollo is bringing SD card support. If thats the case, you will see plenty of Windows Phones sporting SD card slots.
However, nothing is official yet.

That is an insane amount of music. i have 2gb which is closed to 400 songs. I would not want to manage your playlist.
If that is a kicker for you then you have to wait till apollo. Supposively it's coming back then.
You can however stream 25gb from skydrive with an app if you don't want to pay for a monthly zune pass.
The gen 1 makes the sd part of the O/S unless you have for example a surround and disassemble it and replace the built in. That sd though becomes part of the phone and gets wiped to use it for memory. sd however is not as fast as the gen 2 built in memory and i think is the reason you don't see it for gen 2.
The stock takes care of most notifications (facebook, windows live ect) the messeging has all your txt and chats (facebook, msn ect) and your email can have a linked inbox or seperate (even folders) pinned tiles. Calendar is pinned as a tile. You aren't going to get a pull down ever because the whole idea of tiles is a 2 part. #1 is shortcut to an app and #2 is to notify you about something in the app (like weather for example)
I can't speak for the keyboard you talk about but the windows phone keyboard is one of the best.
Apps - there are a lot of great apps. They however may not be the same ones you have on other phones.

I know you are trying to help and convince, but the OP said he didn't want to stream. I have similar wants:
Huge sdcard capabilities, swappable with other devices, without needing reformatted and loosing the data.
Streaming is -always- a hassle, even on wifi. Playing from a sdcard is instantanious.
Sdcards do not need to be incredibly fast to play music, save a system state, save pictures/video, or what they were designed to do. Hopefully this is becoming apparent, and m$ will allow normal usage of them in the future, along with backing up the entire phone to said sdcard. That is a huge issue for me.
Anything you say(or anyone here) about apollo is speculation at this point. Until the device is in hand, this apollo talk is all speculation. Unfortunately, leaks and promises are not reliable or credible.
actually, sd card speed is becoming more important with onboard cameras being HD, sd speed makes a world of difference with the higher quality recordings.

yeah, with a gopro you would totally see a difference with slower cards. my gopro stutters with anything less than class 6.
gopro's are really sensitive though, i have a 1st gen that uses AAA's, if i don't use high mah batteries, the video quality it terrible.
as far as battery, not many people are filming feature length films with smartphones, it's a record and get out world with smartphones.

He didn't say why he wouldn't stream. Mist streaming is paid and you don't own the music. S if is a paid reason, skydive will over come it. I was telling him what other options windows phone has that can utilize his current collection. Also sd cards were not ment to be shared sd = secure digital. just no one except ms has actually used them securely. I'm not pushing him, and I did state all the facts. With windows mobile I used sd cards and they were slow as crap to transfer lots of info to and from. Granted they are faster now but they don't match the nand speed that these 2nd generation phones have 16gb of.

well if they wont add SD then at least make a phone with more than 8 gigs inside.

agreed- the sd part of it is barely used, anywhere. the nand is so much faster, and it's cheaper by the day. might as well just make it a 32Gb phone, and an sdcard slot for the folks that carry their entire home computer in their pocket (on sd). actually, that's an even better argument -for- using a huge nand, and allowing sdcard sharing/mirroring/whatever as a big, dumb bucket to dump to.
i've run into quite a few people who are from outside the US that can't fathom the expense of streaming or uploading 2-3 files a day to have access to them.... while outside of the US. the expense involved for some users of just a cellular phone is an extravagance, streaming and/or cloud storage is nearly financially impossible.
... but here in the US we think nothing of tearing through 1Gb/day or even more to watch kittens roll over in 720p... sigh, i'm rambling now.
Developer love writing app for WP7 and they're will be more than the other 2 platforms since they can use skill they already have.
I have a 32 GB N915G and much of the internal memory is consumed, requiring me to delete files I would otherwise keep. I'm also using KNOX for my work email, and I actually like the concept, because it allows me to contain the privileges my company's IT has over my phone. With that said, I miss having a rooted phone, and I can remove the work-related stuff from this phone because I have an alternative way to access work email (an iPhone 6 from work, which I almost never use).
Would switching to a custom ROM and removing KNOX free up a significant amount of memory? Will it improve the frequent lags and the situation where the phone freezes and requests a password instead of letting me unlock with fingerprint? These two issues are very annoying, and together with the lack of memory may justify using two phones - the Note Edge for private stuff, the iPhone for work.
Thoughts?
I just checked my total Knox usage with ES and it tells me maybe 10 Megs.
I'd be more inclined to root and get rid of all the pre-installed bloatware.

Can you explain how you check this? The info I see under Settings/Storage shows 23.59 GB as used by KNOX, and 14.90 GB as used by Owner, but this doesn't make much sense when the Total space is 32 GB.

My phone (Samsung Galaxy On5) has over 200 mb of storage free, & it still alerts me daily that I'm running low on storage. If I try to install anything from the play store, even something that's less than a MB in size it displays a popup asking me to uninstall a bunch of apps to make room. I just installed something on another device then transferred it over to this one (saved on SD so It's not taking up any internal space) & tried to sideload it & it still wouldn't install it. Is there a fix? It seems to me like Google has no real interest in fixing major issues with Android that have existed practically since the beginning like devices being "low on storage" while Android is the top mobile OS. Perhaps if something like Pinephone would actually succeed & give Android some competition Google would care & address the issues? /r (By the way, there really should be an '<r> </r>' tag.)

Well yeah, 200MB is definitely low on storage. And this message can certainly be annoying but it's not a bug, but a "security" mesure, if you need to take a photo or something, or if an app needs more space to run, it'd be a good thing to have 200MB leftover.
Nowadays apps can take >200Mb just for cache so yeah, it's considered nothing. I personally try to keep at least 1GB free.
Have you checked your storage whether something can be deleted? This is a great app for showing you storage use

The newer generations of Samsung's are capable of very faster read/write times on a fast sd card.
The 10+ shows no lag when using media files off the card. Literally have over 200 albums stored as .wav files there and movies too.
Provides a little bit of a buffer too from malware getting into the data; I've picked off a couple in the downloads folder before they got going including a jpeg. The whole card is backed up on the PC and a 2nd hdd... just in case.
Lol, have an old Dell e6400 laptop I picked up cheap. Just realized 3 weeks ago I could swap out the DVD/CD player for a hot swappable hdd insert tray... $100 latter it now has a 2tb data drive. Split the page file between the two for now, OS and data speeds are a lot better.
You can -never- have too many internal bays on any device, only not enough.

The problem is I factory reset because of being low on storage, & left off a lot of the apps I had before & I'm still every bit as low on storage as I was before if not more. What am I supposed to do when I'm not the one at fault for my phone being low on storage? I would root so I could rip out all of the samsung bloat but A. I can't afford to buy a new phone should something go wrong, & B. I don't think the galaxy On5 has a 1-click root which means having to use a windows computer which I don't have.
Android phones have an in-built feature known as Adoptable Storage, which enables users to add an extra layer of storage space for music, pictures, videos, files, and so on.
The interesting thing is that the Adoptable Storage feature allows SD cards to serve as a permanent internal storage medium. This means that everything you save on your phone will be moved to the external storage (SD card) you mounted, and not your phone's internal storage. With SD cards in play, you never have to worry about your phone's storage getting full, and developing lagging problems.
I looked it up & from what I can tell it's disabled on my phone (Thanks again Samsung.). So that's not an option. Yet another reason to steer clear of Sammy if at all possible. I remember Google saying when they gave the first presentation on android that they wouldn't allow preinstalled, un-removable, then they did, & still do.

I use 20gb just for apps, caches and a tempory download folder. So if you 16gb of memory yeah I see the issue and had to trim the the tree with S4+ before.
Use this package disabler:
Home - Package Disabler
The only NON-root solution that let’s you disable any unwanted packages that come pre-installed / installed with your phone / tablet.
www.packagedisabler.com
Disable crap you don't need and then use that same app to clear it's data. The app is still there just not running and sucking up memory by adding more via data/cache.
Clear browser cache regularly, limit the phone to two browsers max. Clear data regularly on gmaps if you don't need that data or disable if you don't use it. Police the caches regularly, SD Maid (16mb) does a good job.
As for your music, vids, documents, pics, put all of that on an SD card.
Although you can use the SD card as internal memory as jwoegerbauer points out it's best not to unless you can't avoid it. You may have to though if you can't live without some of those large user installed apps.
I could cut my 10+ down to 14gb internal if I had too... so can you.
There are apps I rarely use. As pointed out already you should have at least 1gb of free space preferably 2gb or more head room.
Sort it out as what you're doing now isn't good Android husbandry.

Whether Adoptable Storage is default feature on a phone or not can easily queried with following ADB command sequence:
Code:
adb devices
adb shell "sm has-adoptable"
If true is returned than phone has this feature.

Your Android is only as good as you organize and configure it to be. Always keep in my mind what do you would need to fully restore the phone if it crashed right this second. That way you will learn to do this almost effortlessly in time. Ask yourself the hard questions, like what would I do if I lost all my contacts? Answer, create multiple backup files that are stored on the PC and data hdds. Do this with all critical data that can't be replaced.
Fast charging is more stressful on the battery. Not sure about that Samsung but if it has the app Device Care you can disable fast charging there.
As for the rest use the gear icon on the keyboard to access settings.
Play with it, that's how you learn. It's almost impossible to crash* a stock Android so explore it.
Do Google searches and learn from others by reading.
Eventually it will become intuitive how to fix issues even when you see behavior you never saw before. The Android platform is many times much easier to use and troubleshoot than the Windows platform.
Play with it... Android wuv attention
* always backup all critical data on the phone redundantly to at least 2 hdds that are physically and electronically isolated from each other and the PC. Otherwise you will lose data, sooner or latter.
If you have a SD card slot, get a V30 rated card and use it as a data drive. All critical data and backups go here. Then backup the SD card regularly. Only the apps, the temporary download folder and the DCIM folder go on the internal memory.
Backup the contents on the DCIM folder to the SD card regularly however Do Not name that DCIM, name it something like Photos 2021.

You're welcome.
Lots to do. It takes time but make backing up your data and the ability to fully restore the apps and data after a crash a priority.
One data is lost, it is gone for ever.
Any apps that allow you to backup their settings, do so. Don't forget backing up important passwords.
NEVER encrypt data drives!!! Do not rely on Samsung SmartSwitch as a stand alone data backup!
You can use Apk Export to make installable copies of all your loaded apps even updates so you can reload them without Playstore. All my apps are backed up like this. Even if Playstore discontinues them... I have a copy.
Hey, I remarked the excessive use of storage from many apps on my phone, such as Instagram (1.2GB), Tiktok (1GB)...
Does someone know how to limit the use of space for specific apps ?
I know that somehow, android tells the apps when there's no space left
Maybe someone can clone this functionality to fool the app
Why would you install those junk apks at all?
It's just asking for trouble... security risk.
If it can't run in the browser, ditch it☠☠☠

Well... I need them to keep in contact with my friends, that's why, and they are taking much place for nothing
Every app allocates itself storage space it needs to get first run, then it may increase this storage space at any time. With regards to so-called Social Media apps: The more you use such an app, the more space the app takes up on your phone, unless you clear the cache of such an app.
