Question TWRP? - OnePlus 9

Do we know if anyone is working on twrp for this device? This is first time in many years i have a phone before all these things were available.
Not being pushy but from the look of things on twrp website not always automatic that they will work on it.

It will take some time to get it. Be careful with risky experiments before it is available. Nobody can tell you a clear time when it will be there. People are bricking their devices because they are not careful.

Still isn't a working version for the op8. I'm not holding my breath. I'm leaving well enough alone with root. No msm tools yet and that will leave a bunch on new devices in a bad way if people keep proceeding with trying to flash.

Oh didn't know 8 didn't have one, came from 7 pro. Geez guess that answers that. I looked but seems above my skill set and i wouldn't be able to support if i somehow got it working.

Not even one for the 7 Pro on Android 11. I flashed it after upgrading and got stuck in a crazy boot loop. Had a lot of fun getting it back. Fortunately, I was able to use a stock boot image to boot then pull all my data off. Then had to MSM it to get it back to normal.
It was not a fun night.

I trade mine in just before 11 got released. Never did beta. Didn't trust it

G Tablet coming tomorrow...would like to get some things set straight. Thanks.

Hey all,
I'm getting my G Tablet tomorrow and I'd just like to get some things clarified.
I know, the first thing some will say is USE SEARCH! Well, I did - and that's actually why I just want to get some things straight before I go down the path of modifying the device software. See, reading it all has managed to confuse me more than help me get a definitive instruction set for forging ahead.
I'm seeing the update "****s on CWM" according to a user...and then a 'fix' for that. Than I see that Gapps causes FCs for some, while it works for others. So...yeah, a little back and forth on what to do and who's instructions to follow.
Alright, so first thing's first....Should I flash the Clockwork Mod that I'm seeing available - 0.8? or is there something else I should consider or that I've missed? or maybe wait for a newer version? Should I even flash CWM if I get the newest (and I WILL be getting the newest) S/W version? Are there any downsides at all to flashing CWM on there in terms of messing with OTA updates, etc?
I read this:
"All the ROMS use a standard firmware updater that can be used by non-technical users. Here is an explanation on how it works:...."
Sooo, does that mean I can live without CWM? If an update doesn't work for some reason, will I be able to fix it or overwrite it somehow if I can't get into the tablet at all from the tablet itself? I read something about going into APX mode and putting things on through Windows, is this an infallible method?
Second of all, I read the FAQ thoroughly (I think and hope) but I'm still not 100% on what Gapps to DL or how to put a working Android Market on there especially with this new S/W update. I've seen how to 'fix' the Market to see missing apps, but not how to actually install it on the G Tablet. I may have missed that post somewhere on here.
I'm also unclear if I should get Gapps or not at all, as I've read that some have FCs on there while others do not - so what's the general consensus in light of this update that was just released as of Dec. 21, 2010?
Ultimately, here is what I'd like from my GTab:
I'd like to run the new official Tapn'Tap released recently first and foremost.
I'd like to have the official/unofficial (w/e) Google Market.
I'd like to run Google Apps (Gtalk, Gmail, etc.).
IF I don't like Tapn'Tap, and this is a worse case scenario situation, as in if I HATE TnT - I'd like to have the option to slap something else on there and I'd like to make sure I don't brick my Tablet. Whether that means storing an original official TnT ROM or whatever.
Point me in the right direction please, especially considering things may have changed as of the new S/W update.
Thanks much and sorry for all the questions. I assure you I used search and I attempted to put it together on my own. It's been a long time since I've modded (G1 was the last time) and I don't do it often. Also, apologies if I posted this in the wrong section....I considered posting it in Dev. section but this one seemed better suited.
Thanks again, XDA rocks.

I don't know how much direction pointing I can do but here goes..
Clockwork mod in my opinion is a necessity. Version 0.8 is the best one for most people because of how it deals with the memory locations. Yes, you can do things without it. The update process is as simple as putting an update.zip file, and a recovery folder with a command file in it on an sdcard and holding the vol + button while hitting power. It is easy. Clockwork has a lot of little features though that make life easier. You can make a complete system backup with it. You can install updates, and new firmware with it. You can completely lock up your tablet and using clockwork and your backup be back in business in about 3-4 minutes. You can load new roms and if you hate them you can go back to your old working stuff in minutes. Yes, there are ways to make one of these tablets work again when they get stuck. I don't think anyone has actually bricked one. Some may think they have, but I doubt it.
Unless you are dead set on wanting the stock TnT interface the easiest way to get what you want is to load one of the roms. Yes, there are ways to get most of it without loading a new rom. Most everyone that has gone the I have to stay stock but want all the mods has eventually just loaded a rom. TnT3.0 is based on the latest stock stuff. It has the market, flash, etc. already in it. VegaN is what I use mostly but they are both stable and fast.
Before you flash something brand new that just came out I would read about it and see what others have to say about issues. It usually only takes about 30 minutes until you can tell if it is going to be good or not.
All of the roms for this tablet have there own little quirks. The stock has gotten better with each update but it still is not as good as the ones I named.
Finally.. This tablet is very easy to play with. It is pretty much unbrickable. Anything you can possibly break one of us has probably already broken before and fixed. There are some people that seem to have problems doing every little thing. Most don't. So I wouldn't let any of it scare you off because none of it is that hard.
With a little bit of searching almost everything you may want it to do can be done. I really love mine, and when I got it almost 2 months ago I hated it...

"Sigh" of relief. Then I'm not too worried. As I said I've dabbled in modifying my G1 and it is mostly cake. But I've just been seeing conflicting posts on whether cwm works with the newest official tnt release or not so I wasn't sure what to do.
Thanks for your advice. And when I said pointers, I meant like this as well as pointing me to any posts I may have missed on how to do whatever. Though I THINK I found most of them.

The new release overwrites clockwork. But it is not hard to put back. Always a good idea to copy the clockwork backups folder to your pc, or somewhere they won't be lost. The custom roms typically leave the recovery image alone and can be installed with or without clockwork by either extracting the zip contents for stock recovery, or installing it as is in clockwork.

I can vouch for that. Erased system, boot, data and cache in preparation for a new ROM. Accidentally rebooted and couldn't get into recovery. Booted it into APX mode, flashed stock and was on my way.
I would just run ZRoot, then upload the TnTLite 3.0 recovery and update.zip and then do the recovery mode process. You should have a microsd handy just in case it doesn't work, but so far I haven't needed that.
This tablet is much easier to work with and very forgiving since VS never took the time to lock down the bootloader etc like Motorola did with my Droid X. You really shouldn't fear changing files out etc, provided you're getting a ROM from one of the people providing them here. If you can press and hold two buttons at once, you can make your gTab an awesome little tablet. It benchmarks about 1000 points higher than my Droid X on quadrant. Can't wait to see what these guys can do with Gingerbread.

It is also not hard to alter the update so that it does not overwrite clockwork.
Open update.zip
Find updater-script, Open in notepad++
Remove the line that references recovery.img
Flash update

The very first time I rooted, I used ZRoot and installed 2.4.0. I didn't change anything and used the exact same process of simply copying over the 3.0.0 files over to the root directory of the internal memory and did the recovery procedure (vol+ and pwr keys). It worked like a charm.

My device hasn't come yet (damn you FedEx!) but I'm eagerly awaiting it.
My plan:
Unbox, start it....do a factory reset from the getgo if it has enough juice.
Set it back up. Charge it to full. If whatever comes on it is as unbearable as I've seen in on Youtube - start modifications.
Will CWM install on it AFTER I do the update if it's available to me? I've seen that the update messes with it if it's already there - but noone's mentioned putting it on there after the fact. I may just go that route for simplicity sake.
Thanks for this!, and thank you all for chiming in with your experience. I feel much better about just getting my hands dirty in it all. I had wrote something to someone yesterday about jumping in and just doing it, but when it comes to dealing with it yourself it can be a daunting task - especially when it still has that new smell, lol. Anyway, thanks again. You guys really rock.
Will stop back later on after I've done my thing
I think they are both nice devices. There are trade off for both of them. I think the screen on the iPad is wonderful, where the gTab's is okay. But the gTab has a forward facing camera, you can print from it, and you can modify it fairly easily too.

Seriously though...trust the directions from the great devs like roebeet. Follow their instructions word for word. You can switch ROMs and then flash back if you want. No worries...
Off topic!
Well...disappointment! Fedex had my package out for delivery at 8am and at 8pm, they're not here. This is why I like UPS, they show up at my door on the day of delivery, no exceptions - they have shown up at almost 9pm before. The Archos 101 I got was sent out at 8am as well but got here at 1:30pm - I suppose that was before the holiday rush.
Checking the details of my tracking I'm seeing a "delivery exception" at 7:30pm (I guess it was time to get back to the facility so they can clock out by 8pm?) and upon calling them I get a somewhat stumbling but polite CS who tells me the delivery went out "late" - upon which I asked if 8am was considered late, especially from a distribution facility WITHIN the same zip code as I am, and all he could say was "Very sorry about this".
Aaaanyway....I guess it will be tomorrow before I can report my adventures.
Think I'll be able to get my $3.99 back from Amazon? I have Prime and with that the package would have come tomorrow anyway. Basically my $3.99 is wasted. Imagine if I didn't have Prime though? Whew.

If you can figure out how to brick it you will probably get an award.. It won't be a good award but probably one of those top ten dumb things people do awards. So far unless you plug the motherboard into a wall socket no one has bricked one. May think they have, but like I said before I doubt it..
And your right.. If it can be done, someone eventually will figure out how. And then we will all laugh at them.. At least I will
I finally got the G tablet tonight and...alright, don't flame me for this - but I don't see what all the complaints about the screen being horrendous or the device being molasses slow are about?
I don't know how people are trying to view it...but when looking at it or setting it on a stand to watch media, I'm not seeing any problem with the viewing angles. It's about the same as my laptop so I watch it the same way.
It's not even a 1/4 as slow as the stuff I've seen on Youtube or in some of the review videos I've seen around the net. I haven't gotten a single FC. Granted, I haven't put in a SD Card yet so maybe problems will start then?
I guess I should note, the very first thing I did was did a factory reset. Then I hooked it up to Wifi and got the 3053 update. I'm one of those who will be waiting for the 'official' update on the 24th.
I set up the time and date, restarted and everything works. I haven't installed flash yet (don't need it that much) and stuff that I DO want on there right now works fine (skype, pandora, fring, dropbox, evernote). I'm slowly figuring out a list of what I want/need from my Mytouch 4G to port to the VS GTab. Figure I don't really NEED Gtalk, Gmail on there because I have these on my phone AND PC - do I really want them making noises all around my home on 3 devices? I was concerned about getting the Google Apps on but now I'm finding I really don't need them. So it seems to me this will be a matter of learning to separate what I need on a tablet vs. my phone - I was of the mentality that I should just get whatever's on my phone on the tablet, this is something others apparently do as they seem to want everything that's on their phone, on their tablets as well.
I personally don't see the point in that. Had I had the Google Market, that would have escaped me as I'd have used Appbrain to just get my motherload of apps from the MT4G to the GTab. Not having it has slowed me, and now I get to re-evaluate before I do grab apps for it.
Now I just have to merge/convert my HTPC into a NAS device as well and find an app that will allow me to DLNA stream media from it and I'll be in mobile heaven.
I haven't had my wifi drop at all anywhere in my home and I've marched all over with it (I use full Wifi N, no G compat. so maybe my range is wider?). Tried email, etc. to replicate crashes and force closes but haven't so far. No surfing issues. I DID find that one app got 'stuck' being downloaded and I had to delete the file before the 'downloading' icon would go away, even after restart.
Maybe the trick to getting a workable GTab in the first place is to factory reset it before first use? Iunno. Things may change and issues may pop up the more I use it and as time passes - but so far, so good!
Again, I can't thank XDA enough for the advice and info. I've found and been given.

G900P safestrap?

Silly question perhaps, but my google-fu is failing me here.
Is there such a thing as safestrap for the G900P? I find references for ATT/Verizon builds everywhere but am attempting to determine if they will install without issue on the G900P... Would like to use the multi-boot option to experiment with some roms and tinker with things without needing to re-flash every change.
Thanks.
ive never seen a safestrap for anything with an unlocked bootloader, i thought that i saw a modded version of twrp out there somewhere that had rom slots tho

Shame, 'cause it's a really nice feature... especially for folks like me (weekend tinkerers)... boot to a rom you tinker with in the moments you have time, then reboot during the workweek to stock.... and then pick up where you left off later. Especially as phone storage gets larger... flashing/backup/restoring tends to take longer and longer.

Guess it's kind of a moot point since I didn't get anywhere with what I needed it for (the AWS band thread in this forum)

So I just bought this phone today anything I should do with it?

Ok more specifically I'm pretty used to the stock android experience (modded of course) but I read about that audio issue and I'm pretty terrified of it because music and calls are the main things I need a phone for. I've been out of the modded android loop since CM10 so I don't really know present day standards or processes for unlocking/rooting let alone standards for ROMs etc. Anyone got any advice?

my words of advice would be to make sure that you need root before you root it. what i mean by that is think about what you stand to gain by rooting it vs the PITA it is to root this thing. Pay close attention to the 168 hour thing as its been a thorn in many a persons side and caused many a headache. Ive had dozens of android phones and all have been rooted with the exception of the HTC Rezound, which required the OMG PITA "wire trick" to root properly. These phones run very well as stock and dont have much bloatware, so rooting them is becoming less necessary. I got mine in july '18 and have been happy with its performance overall so far. Ive reflashed the stock tar.img a few times for varying reasons, and even rooted it. But after losing SPay capability with root, i flashed back to stock as the gains werent worth the losses to me. Also, SHealth is a task to get working after you trip knox btw.

Yeah tbh I'm ok with the interface now and aside from making the volume buttons change tracks when you hold them down the only things id need root for is clearing out bloatware etc. I think I'll take your advice and not root it for now (until something breaks) but what is this 168 hour thing?

there has been a great deal of discussion about how to get the OEM unlock toggle to show up in the developer options, many suggest that its only obtainable by leaving the phone powered off for 168 hours and then rebooting, not connecting to any network (including cellular) and then enabling developer options and then the toggle should be there.

So wait. My phone is showing the OEM unlock toggle and I can change it. Does that mean I can root? Or would trying to root then make me wait 168 hours? I never tried any custom stuff with it btw. Just bought and installed Lawnchair lol.

be careful with starting down the root rabbit hole tho. if you flash anything in download mode, youll trip the knox security counter and that is 100% irreversible without sending it to samsung. Root is cool and allows you to do stuff, but honestly ive not found too much reason to root this phone yet. Ive literally had over 20 android phones and i rooted and modded all of them (except the rezound, if you want to know why that one wasnt fully rooted, just google "rezound wire trick" and youll see) and this one just really doesnt need root IMO. Sure it would be nice to have a few root things, but its not worth the trade off of losing samsung pay so i can pay for stuff with my watch. That feature is just waaaay too valuable to me

np, the G900V was a major disappointment with its locked bootloader. i recall spending several hours bricking one and having to restore it with the stock tar.img file. total PITA

Will you stop telling people that you will mess up phone if you try to root it.
If people follow directions they have nothing to worry about.
You where bootloop not bricked a brick device is usually a unfix able.
If is fine you what to keep Sam pay but your info you are telling is wrong.
I recently unroot my phone guess what Sam pay work fine.
Then root phone again no lock out and enable treble and flashed gsi image.
So their nothing wrong with rooting if you want to do that.

dude, i dont think youre reading what im saying right. Ive never said that rooting your phone will mess it up. the stuff about the G900V is a DIFFERENT PHONE. FFS. This isnt my first rodeo rooting and modding. Hell, i even was writing mods back in the Evo and S3 days. Im refamiliarizing myself with some of this, but i havent ever said youd mess your phone up if you follow the root instructions. Ill even go as far as saying as long as you dont Odin flash the tar.img for a completely different phone, these things are virtually impossible to hard brick. And yes, a bootloop is referred to as a soft brick. But, it is important to know that if you do root your phone, it WILL make samsung health not work as it did when stock and there is NO WAY of bringing it back without swapping the motherboard

Unlocking the bootloader was completely dependent on the type of EMMC chip that the G900V that you had was using. I got three of those and only one was able to unlock after the Marshmallow update.

the last tinkering i did with the G900V was several years ago and that was at the point when all hope was lost on the locked bootloader. I havent looked into it since as the G900's i had were G900P's which were FAR easier to work with. I did also root and ROM a couple G900VL's, but again was years ago

good times, yeah LOL!!! major waste of time on those friggin G900V's is more like it yeah, i wouldnt root yet, keep the stock recovery so it automagically updates to pie in a few weeks and manually check for updates every so often to force its hand. Also sammobile.com posts them too if you want to force it on via Odin and trip knox. Anyways, if you get the update in the near future, let us know!

Question Is there a one click root method for Pixel phones?

Magisk seems to be the only way to root it for now even with OEM unlock function on with bootloader. I'm on android 13 and Pixel 7 Pro. Root methods like Kingroot seems to fail and be stuck at 1 %. But Magisk works fine.
Year 2015 is asking for their Kingroot back. lol
Rooting nowadays literally can't be easier. Install the magisk app, extract the init_boot.img from the ROM you wanna use/flash, patch init_boot.img inside the magisk app and flash that img in fastboot.
Take a look at PixelFlasher.
why would u want to use a one click root on a pixel pointless. pixelflasher is where its at.
Well for me, if any, it's not about one click root.
What i really long for is bootloader unlock & root without the need of PC. Lol,
just like in time when you can jailbreak iphone directly from browser. So easy that someone prank the apple stores, jailbreaking the whole display unit.

someone obviously missed the entire DECADE we didn't need a cable to do anything unless it involved terminal commands.

Because Kingroot was possible to use back then thanks to security holes in the system, which have been patched and locked down.

Your statement makes absolutely no sense. We didn't need a cable unless it involved terminal commands? That would be every single time this decade and the last. He was stating with Pixel Flasher it couldn't be any easier.

second, we literally regressed in flashing. we used to have clockwork, cm recovery, twrp, etc...a million tetherless solutions. for a whole decade. i never needed a desktop computer to flash a phone until recently. but yeah.... pixel flasher is great .....at sucking.

Pixelflasher is basically a 1-click method for rooting/updating your phone. It's the easiest thing in the world. For 2-clicks, you can flash a custom ROM.
So sorry that you need a computer to root. It's not 2013 anymore. Manufacturers do everything they can to prevent the very thing you want to do. If it's too much of an issue to do what it takes to Root your phone, then don't root it. My Pixel 6 Pro was never rooted, It worked fine. It did everything I needed it to do.
My Nexus 6 was rooted and customized like a muscle car. It also did everything I needed it to do. (I still have it, right in my desk)
If you have issues with Recovery - and I miss Clockwork Recovery big time (I only used TWRP on one device) see if you can get Joey Krim to come out of retirement and create a recovery for this phone. (I still have his recoveries on my Dev-host, actually).
The point is, things change. We don't have hard-key keyboards anymore. We don't have attached antennas anymore. Technology moves forward, not backwards and if we're going to be rebels and mod our phones, we can only go with what actually works.

I don't think Google screwed anyone. Google does things with the average user in mind (although that can open up another can of worms ) , not modders. The average user doesn't unlock their bootloader, doesn't root, doesn't mod, etc.. It's not Google's job to make things easier for modders.
Hell, I'm just thankful we can root at all.

Correct. It's Google's job to make Android more secure, not easier to hack. SuperSU doesn't exist anymore so now we need to use a PC.
I believe you can still flash Magisk in TWRP by renaming the .apk to .zip to gain root, but unfortunately there's no TWRP versions for Android 13 yet.

Nexus was specifically made as a reference Android device. Google ripped that away from us for a phone made for "the average user" in Pixel. My sentiment stands. We got shafted HARD! I love my p7. But I wanted a Nexus. It's really disappointing to see Google abandon us so much! We had it MADE with TWRP. We would have been better served with the Play suite of phones if they wanted user friendly...but they killed that too!!! Google kills EVERYTHING we love.
Someone doesn't seem to understand that the only reason those tools worked was because they relied on an OS that was full of security holes. Google just plugged those holes. It may be more inconvenient now than it used to be but it's much more secure for everyone.

someone doesn't seem to understand not everyone cares about security over functionality. idk about you, but i've never had a single issue. not one. ever. going all the way back to 2009 with my first android. and if my count is correct i've had around 3 phones that were unrooted, and those were only because of encrypted bootloaders.
the only time any of my info ends up in the wrong hands is because of server security. has nothing to do with my phone. this is a linux device. NOTHING happens without permission anyway.

well maybe what i really want to see from a phone is : "iknowwhatamdoing" mode,
something like 'csrutil disable' or secureboot disable in mac/PC
and that toogle should be available from the device itself. Not by connecting to other device.
let the one that need full security to be on stock mode

Giving the ability to bypass security just gives shady characters a shiny red target to figure out how to exploit. It would make no sense to allow this directly on the device.

Question TWRP Development!

Is there any TWRP development coming to is phone?? Feel like it's gone back to galaxy s one days before twrp was invented. What the wtf, we going backwards?
Was given the impression the pixel 7 pro was the bees nees of dev but feels like a phone in chains. Do I need to carry a laptop around to flash a ROM . Wtf!
the s23 ultra has an unofficial twrp build already and the pixel 7 pro nadda.
I feel I want to return this and get something that actually has possibilities. This is ****. I want to play with different roms they look good but with the trouble of not being able to flash on the fly, flash majisk, I have no interest in flashing these days, seems to trouble some. Pixels feels like they are just in locks and chains. Not happy so far at all with this phone.
I'm currently on calyx os and if I flash magisk from a computer I can't take the OTA, where if I had TWRP recovery I can just flash OTA or file.zip and the majisk and done. Feel like this phone is a step backwards. That do you think?
Just thought I'd ramble on a bit about my upsets. No pun intended. But to thoughs who made this harder
There just haven't been a need for TWRP as of now, since you can/need to do most things via a computer and a cable. Factory images updates for example, cannot be flashed via TWRP.
Other ROMs such as LOS or Evox has their own recovery implementation. Which is incompatible as well

I might be wrong but the s23 series is probably the last who will get twrp too.
I think twrp on a/b devices is not a big thing and google forces any device released with android13 to be an a/b device.
And TWRP is generally of little use on Pixel devices, which do not have a recovery partition. Since the bootloaders are easily unlocked and accept flashing commands, firmware can be flashed via ADB.

What you mean not a big thing? What? bootloaders unlocked. Every mainstream phone has bootloader's to unlock. There are many ab devices with twrp.?
In a few years it seems flashing a ROM will be a thing of the past. Google android is sailing the way to an island with no food. Android is dead. I think i'll have to go back to my op5t for the full fruits of life. There is no life here.

For The Win as opposed to the other option, I'd guess... Using that old thing called Google. Before getting a new device I always have a quick check on XDA as to what kind of support/ROM etc development is being done. Only takes a moment, just like the search I did for you. No need to rant, just change your device then. Job done!
It's really a backwards for Google without TWRP's support. Very Badly.

Yeah, as I mention on a few posts above. If you read properly which only takes a moment, i didn't have time to do a full examination on this phone. But I did a brief one and thought it may come to it's senses down the line like all the other phones I ever owned. But Nuh doesn't look like this one is going anywhere in terms of twrp recovery. Or any recovery that helps the user flash on the fly.

Tinkering with your phone without having a proper Nandroid backup is a no go, for me.
So far this phone is not what I expected it to be. Came from a OnePlus 7 Pro. Is it smoother? Probably, can't really notice. It is faster in regular use? Well no. Are the cameras better? Sure. Can I really play with it like you should be able to on a rooted phone without any fears of losing hours and hours of time? No, 'cause no TWRP/Nandroid.
Real shame.

According to TWRP website, "is done by roughly 4 people at this point." For all other phones and everything else, they depend on volunteer "maintainers" as "We can’t afford to buy every device made" (source: their website About & FAQs). So if you wish to learn to become a "maintainer" to bring it to the P7P, or commission an expert to voluntarily "port" it to this device....
This is how TWRP comes to devices. It's not like Google pays them, or anyone pays them to get it on devices, so ranting and demanding it with that expectation is unfounded. Also, it's well established that they have been having issues/problems with the next version of Android each time -- starting from the Pixel 5 when it moved from Android 10 to 11, then by the time they got it working for Android 11, Android 12 was released and they weren't able to get it working for that, and by the the time they were "beta" able to get it working for Android 12, Android 13 released and they are not able to keep up.

RIP TWRP you're always missed.
Thankfully Pixel Flasher "kind of" seem to be more and more like TWRP but on the computer. A/B really killed TWRP hard.
Really, after my OnePlus with its quirks and requirements, the 7P seems like a breeze to flash and root...
