All you have to do is match the voltages and meet or exceed the current draw.

It won't charge any faster. The charge rate is limited to keep the battery from overheating. More expensive tablets have extra circuitry to monitor the temp to allow faster charging. The so called "smart charging".

According to Amazon, it will support at least a 15w charger:
Charge timeFully charge in under 5 hours using the USB-C cable and 5W power adapter included in the box. Fully charge in under 4 hours with 9W adapter (sold separately), and under 3 hours with 15W adapter and USB type C to C cable (adapter and cable sold separately).
If you were to connect it to a charger with a higher capacity, it will still work, but you won't necessarily see any improvement over their highest rated charger. (Otherwise, they would have mentioned it!)

Actually that sounds like it would be really cool if it exists, I'd also be interested in knowing if there's a powerbank that supports quick charge. I've held off on picking up a powerbank for a while now, but if something like this is even possible it would probably get me interested, it'd be pretty awesome to be able to just plug in to a backup battery and have it charge up the phone with quickcharge speed ;P I wouldn't be surprised to find out it's not possible though... I also have an aukey but the PB-T2 model 12000mAh. Have quick charge USB outlet and also a normal 1A USB outlet. Has a 2A microusb input for charging an a so-so LED light built in. A bit heavy and slightly longer than the Note 4 in size. Cons: I would have preferred a 2.1A instead of the 1A USB outlet for fast charging other non quick charge devices.

As above Aukey Quick Charge 2.0 external battery packs are pretty good. They do them in different sizes and go above 10000mah

Hmm... we have Note 4's a removable battery is more compact and supports quick charge. Just have to get a battery charger that supports it. There would also be less power loss because it would be more efficient than transferring energy from one battery to another. Just my opinion.

Hi guys,
I want to buy a extra charger for my 6P at work. I am wondering what specs should I be looking for for the quick charging capability? The google store has one that is 15W and another one that is higher. I don't know which one to choose, also, I want to see if I can buy any 3rd party one from Amazon that can give me quick charging.

There are 2 options now from Google, but I wouldn't call them cheap. I bought the $40 dual port charger for my bag because it seems nice, and if it sucks I can easily send it back.

Unless it supports 3A at 5V then probably not. any QC 2.0 charger will only output 2.0A at most for 5V so that's not fast charging.

Won't it work with any Qualcomm QC 2.0 power adapter (outputting 5, 9 and 12V) and with a suitable USB-C lead? I am hoping that will be the case anyway, as I've got two QC 2.0 adapters for home and 1 car charger adapter. Should keep me covered, and all I'll need to do is buy new USB-C cables.

He answered it below... That was with a QC2.0 charger giving him "2A" input according to Android OS.
Basically the phone shows "faster charging" when anything higher amperage gets used, not just native usb-c. The speed it charges is obviously not the same, but at least it utilizes a higher rate.

Assuming 15W is considered Fast Charging, then Type C has nothing to do with it. Current QC 2.0 chargers pump 18W via Type A to Micro B cables.
It is the limited design of the 6P that requires a Type C end to end solution (or captive charger) to permit fast charging. A little more thoughtful design choices would have allowed 18W via a Type A to Type C cable in the same way as the QC chargers operate by over charging a stupid cable or by respecting USB Power Delivery at 12V/1.5A in a smart cable solution.

It can't go over 5V we have been over this before... So yes the Type-C doesn't affect the charging but the pin layout and chip only supports 5V from what has been seen so far.

I concur, but it is important to dispel the marketing nonsense that Type C some how represents a "Fast Charging" solution. It is a connector and would have supported much better "Fast Charging" solutions than a steady state 5V solution. It will perform very well from 0% charge, but will lag higher voltage solutions at the other end of the charging cycle.

Sorry, this is not true. The higher voltage of the power delivery has no effect on charging speed given the same total power. This is especially true at the top end of the battery SOC where the charge rate is limited by the battery chemistry.

Has anyone found any cheap chargers that can charge this phone like the Essential charger does (really fast)? I have bought two different chargers and neither of them can really even charge the phone. The lock screen says it's charging slowly, and the battery meter acts like it's charging, but it doesn't actually charge. The chargers were both Quick Charge 3.0 chargers too. None of my old phone chargers with a type-c adapter will charge the phone either.

Have you tried different cables?
Every charger I own will charge this phone. My Samsung, pixel, Motorola, etc usb type-c chargers will all work.

Thanks! Now, what about if I wanted it to just charge normally (not rapidly or slowly) for if if I wanted to leave it charging overnight? Don't think I need to spend the extra money on rapid chargers for that scenario...

No idea. Honestly, I don't know of anyone who consciously needs to control the speed of their charge. I avoid charging overnight by rapid charging during the day at work.
does it really need PD? they are kind of expensive and there are chargers out there with 5V, 6V, 9V, 12V @ 3A

I'm not sure how Android is programmed to display "Rapidly Charging", but I'm sure it's not by charging standard. Probably based on supplied power, but it definitely doesn't charge as fast as the stock charger. I noticed this with my QC chargers. It will say rapidly charging for a couple minutes and then just not charge at all or say charging slowly. Frustrating as hell so I bought an extra USB PD charger.
My Samsung chargers all work, and charge the phone to 100%. They just say charging, not quick charging, but whatever... The % goes up.

Try using the Ampere app on the Play store. It will show you what amounts of current etc is being used to charge the phone..

Yeah...it doesn't. I'm such a tool I assumed it did and bought two Ankar QC3 wall chargers and a Tronsmart QC3 car charger. None of them are able to charge the phone at all, says that it's charging slowly but doesn't seem as though it's charging at all.

Phone needs a charger with USB-C Power Delivery and not QC. Anker has at least one model and Incipio has one as well. There are many others on Amazon.. The cool thing about those is that they also change my XPS-13. Only carry one charger when I travel.
I've got a few QC 2/3 chargers and a few USB-C PD chargers and what I've found is that depending on which USB-C to USB-A makes a difference whether I get rapid charge or not.
I'm slowly converting over to USB-C to USB-C but it is stupid expensive for some things like the power packs with USB-C...
Anyway, try a few different cables and see if it works for you, also it seems to work a tiny bit better on the Oreo Beta however my QC 2.0 car charger doesn't charge as fast as it did on 7.1.1 but luckily the car chargers are the cheapest USB-C PD items to buy, roughly about the same price as a cable.
One last note, the same charger and cable don't always go into rapid charging mode so replugging the cable in sometime kicks in rapid mode for me.

Just got my 1+6 and I love it. Just thought I'd share that the 1+ power adapter doesn't work with other usb C cables for fast charge. It'll charge at regular speed but not fast. I have an OTG cable from Amazon that will not work at all. Make sure to buy OEM accessories

Did you put OTG mode on via advanced settings? It will go off automatically after 10 min inactivity. And yes, Dash charging needs original dash charger AND dash cable (or whatever it's called, the red Oneplus cable).
I have cheap chinese OTG-adapter and it works just fine, after enabling OTG mode every time when using.

For my nexus6 I have fast charger which kicks up charging up to 9V - 1A.
This charger does not work with oneplus6 and charging only at 5V - 1A.
Also, nexus6 does not fast charging with oneplus charger and charging at 5V - 1A.
I am highly disappointed that we do not have standard for fast charging.
I use magnetic adapter and it's incredible convenient to use and I am not going to go back. And now I have to leave with retarded decision from Oneplus who cannot deliver normal fast charging from any chargers which able to deliver over 1A !!

You need the cable provided with the phone to dash charge, because of the high current output while charging. Standard cables are rated to handle maximum 2amps, while OP uses 4amps.
Edit: VOOC and rapid charging cables have a special 5th pin used for verification

I didn't realize there is a 5th pin used as verification. Ideally the power brick and/or phone can detect the resistance of the cable but that's not the case here. Luckily most 4A cables I've found are VOOC or rapid charging compatible.
If someone needs a longer cable:
you can actually use a 3.0 USB extension cable as long as it is rated for more power.

Just upgraded the misses from a OP 1 to an OP 6.
Until now we had also been using magnetic usb cables that are soooooo convenient.
My Nexus6 and her OP 1 charge at 1amp with them according to Ampere and were android auto recognized by our cars...
With them the OP6 only charges at 320mA and is not android auto recognized by our cars...
I'm looking for a magnetic usb cable upgrade so OP 6 works as I expect it to... I don't care about quick charging (have never needed it as battery is never empty when i set the phone to charge at night). I care about magnetic uber convenience and android auto recognition in the car.

The 7 Pro is supposed to support 5v/3A, 15W charging from a Power Delivery charger, but I'm only seeing 4.5v/1.8A, which is about 8W slow charging.

Your battery is above 50% and charging speed slows with increasing battery percentage. To determine maximum speed of USB PD for the OP7Pro you need to check at a lower charge level. Warp charge will also not charge with 30W all the way.

Even with the OP charger once you get to 50-70% changing rate slows down by at least 50%, try when the phone is at 10% and then watch it for a couple minutes, that will tell you the max for that particular charger

It's the built in diagnostics. Dial *#808# in the OP Phone app.
Swipe to the second screen, "Device debugging", and there's one test for Normal Charger, and one for Fast Charger.

OnePlus has said it supports 15w PD while screen is off and 5v 1.5a while display is on.

I'm seeing the same thing. I tried three different USB PD chargers that I used on my Pixel XL. The highest charge current I saw was 1980mA. The battery was in the low to mid 30% range. I used the Ampere app. To check the accuracy of the app, I tried two things. 1. I used the stock Oneplus Warp charger and Ampere showed 5740mA (wow, 5.7A is kicking some butt!). 2. While using my Belkin USB-PD car charger, I noted the voltage and current coming from my bench power supply. The bench supply was outputting about 10W so an Ampere reading of about 8W of energy into the phone made sense. I used three different cables too.
All my cables are USB-C to USB-C since all my PD chargers have a USB-C port on them. I see the standard for USB 3.1 has a max rating of [email protected] which can be done over a USB-A to USB-C cable. I wonder if the only way to get 15W into the phone (besides the Oneplus chargers) is to use a USB-A to USB-C cable with a charger that has a USB-A port and can support 3A? Edit: No, more research shows there there should be no problems with C-C. The Belkin PD car charger I have doesn't specifically say it supports [email protected], but the Anker AC USB charger does list [email protected] I can't get more than about 1900mA out of it even with the battery low.
I basically support all the users that OP failed this point to include proper USB PD function. Only 7.5w to 10w is supported without any dash or warp charger. Confirmed

Power Delivery (PD) is very complex. For example the USB PD Revision 3 specification is 657 pages. Much of the complexity involves the negotiation protocols between chargers and phones or other devices. In cases where a compatible protocol can't be negotiated between a charger and phone the page 242 of the spec says: "Shall supply the default [USB 2.0], [USB 3.2], [USB Type-C 2.0] (USB Type-C®) or [USBBC 1.2] voltage and current to VBUS when a Contract does not exist (USB Default Operation)." That's my guess why people are seeing lower charging currents than advertised by the chargers.
The OP's charger has this interesting cryptic note on their Amazon page: "Rapid charge: USB-C charger delivers 45-watts of power to charge and recharge all of your important devices at a high speed with PD 3. 0 (5V/ 3a, 9V/ 3a, 12V/ 3a, 15V/ 3a, 20V/ 2. 25a) Note: USB adapter will not be able to trigger the PD protocol
