SMS Backup+ alternative? - General Questions and Answers

Is there any alternative to old SMS Backup+ app? I want SMS messages uploaded to Gmail and watch them like conversation. SMS Backup & Restore is great but not that great because messages are in .xml file and I can't see contacts separetly.

Maybe you can try Coolmuster Android Backup Manager, if your phone is Android based. This tool can help us back up text messages and other data from Android phone to the computer easily. Then you can check it easily. And more, it's free to do that. Just have a try.

actually I tried on another way.I have web hosting and now I upload SMS messages to the server.
But I have email address from web hosting paired with gmail my messages are not mowed on gmail.
But at least now I can upload messages online.

how and what do you use to upload to your server?

I already have my own blog website. So I created another email address which is used only for SMS backup. And then put IMAP settings from this email to SMS Backup+

okay thanks
I read up on accessing it this way using an app password
how safe is this though do you know?
seems like if the sms+ app was compromised, they would have a password to get into my gmail account which bypasses 2factor

I don't know how safe it is. But if they want to get into your gmail account that would do even when it was only one click away from connecting.
But now they can access only to your another email address.

ahhh
I was thinking of my main gmail
I'll just make a gmail account for SMS texts only, thanks!!

Oh, you thinking of mail gmail account. Maybe you can try other email providers, like yahoo.
On your gmail you can only transfer emails. But because it was in different folder gmail did not automatically transfer. You need to do it manually. It's annoying, yes.
But more safely because you can select what you want to transfer.

Send calendar invites via IMAP not activesync

Hi
I don't know if its possible by I need to send calendar invites via IMAP as I never use activesync (I sync via SyncML with our server for contact/tasks/calendar).
All calendar invites are always put in the activesync outbox. Is there anyway to re-direct them to the IMAP account I have set up? Is there another mail application I should be using?
Thanks
Jonathan
Am i mistaken assuming that calendar invites are sent thru mail using the first connection your device can find?
Aren't calendar invites regular emails with different scripts?
They always seem to end up in the outlook email outbox - even though this is the third mailbox in the list.
i tried it myself and apparently there isn't even an option to move it to another account.. only accepts the outlook account itself. maybe WM doesn't support sending invites to attendees thru anything other than AS...
I suggest you change the thread's topic to [REQ] Mail Invite Attendees...
or something of that sort.. I'm almost positive someone would answer.
Calendar > Menu (right Softkey) > Tools > Options > Appointments (Tab) Send Meeting request via:
select your email account
stupid me. didn't think to check there.
lol
good thinkin

Fantastic - its so easy when you know where to look.

Ok, so invites now go from my IMAP account fine but the details are being messed up somewhere.
I created an appointment for today 12:00 - 13:00 and sent the invitation to my wife who is using XP, Office 2003 SP3. When she got it it said the meeting was 10:30-10:30.
Both my HTC Touch HD and wife's PC are set to GMT and regionally to UK
I'm confused. What have I not got set right?
I don't know if this problem still exists, but there used to be a problem with outlook in which if the outlook time settings didn't match the pc's time settings it made all appointments change.
go to outlook and search for the time settings.. check that it's not syncing your appointments with a server or something.

push email in stock email (google apps) client

I'm using CM10 (TeamChopsticks Alpha 1a) with Google Apps (jb-72612). On the email client, I can add an Exchange account and it gives me the option to push messages. But if I add a gmail account (even after deleting the Exchange), there is no option to push-- the most frequent checking is 5 mins.
Back on the stock Samsung/Skyrocket email app, I had push enabled on my Exchange account plus as many gmail accounts as I wanted. Any ideas?
Hi!
Push email does not work when using a POP3 or IMAP account. You have to use an Exchange account. By default, when you add a Gmail account in the Email app, it is recognized as either an IMAP account or a POP3 account.
Fortunately, Gmail can work as an Exchange account. When you add your Gmail account -- either in the Email app or though System settings > Accounts & sync > Add account:
- First enter your email address and your password;
- Once your password has been entered, you will see the Manual Setup button becoming active. Click on it;
- Select the type of email account you want to add -- select Exchange;
- Domain\Username should be your Gmail address, Password should be already filled with your password. You will have to modify the Server string and input m.google.com. Click next;
- Now, the Automatic (Push) sync option should be available to you.
(I'm on CM9, though, but I guess the procedure to add a new email account has not changed a lot since then...)
Wow, that did the trick.
Thanks, man. Any way I can pay you back more than a "thanks" click?
I used the gmail-exchange push method on the sgs3 i9300 stock email client and it worked, but it sucked lots of data, like 1MB per night instead of a few KB how it worked on stock sgs2 i9100.

This is new to me. So the Gmail app doesn't support push email?
No. Samsung email on sgs3 doesn't do push. It works to some extent with google email ( nit yahoo email) with exchange service.

Hangouts SMS displays blank user image

Has anyone been able to figure out how to get a profile pic for yourself to show up in the hangouts SMS app for your SMS messages instead of the default unset gray generic picture?

"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",

Details:
1. g+ profile pic is set and appears in the top left of notification pulldown
2. have tried changing g+ profile pic from the phone
3. have tried adding my own phone number as a contact in the contacts app with the same g+ pic
4. have tried changing the g+ pic in g+ on PC
5. This is simply an annoyance and SMS functionality still works but why is this not happening to everyone?
6. when tapping the blank user pic this page comes up:
Full URL of error is: https://plus.google.com/_sms_only_account/about/
any ideas? There is a thread about this at AC forums also but nobody has come up with a working solution yet maybe some of you have this working?

Make sure you have set up the "ME" contact in the People app. That is what Hangouts uses for "you".
IIRC you can change your profile picture in Hangouts itself, somewhere in the settings. That should be synced with your G+ account, but you didn't mention trying this in your post.
If that doesn't work I'd try going into Settings > Apps > Hangouts > Clear Data and see if that helps.

yeah that is all setup with a pic and my phone number and link to g+ and everything, might try clearing the hangouts app cache and data and see if that changes anything
well this is dumb.. you MUST be signed in to the hangouts half of it to see your pic in the SMS half.. @[email protected]
when not signed into hangouts even tho i can send myself a SMS and see my pic in the "from" left side lol the "to" right side is still blank
way to half-ass it Google
That's a funny quirk. I will say though, if I weren't using the Hangouts half of the app I don't think I would use Hangouts for SMS. There are so many better options out there.

Mail and SMS app

Last time I used Android there was a SMS and Mail app, I recently got a Nexus 5 (Lollipop) and I have hangout and gmail, is there anyway I can remove hangout and gmail and use the sms and email app? By the way my device is already rooted (couldn't wait )
I personally love Hangouts, but there's also the "Messenger" app which is the new SMS. As far as email goes, the old Email app has been integrated into Gmail. Settings / Add Account.

Sorry about this can you please move it to Q/A.
No problem I have contacted a Moderator. Should get moved soon. You might want to read the XDA rules before making any more threads in the future. Thanks for understanding

But to answer your question. You can use root uninstaller or Titanium Backup to uninstall system apps. Then grab what ever apps you want from the play store. All google apps were moved to the play store including messaging and email apps

It only takes 2 clicks to switch between added email accounts in Gmail. IMHO that's about as quick and simple as it could get (and if memory serves, the same number of clicks required in the old Email app).
There are email apps that will combine your inboxes if that is what you are looking for. I use mail droid. But just have a look on the Play store.

[Q] Photo from email

Which is? The one on the phone? What's that? (I have couple of "standard clients" on my android phone.)
Can you forward the message to an email account that you can access on a PC?
Is there an email accnt that can't be accessed through pc? If you are using the stock mail client. Once you open it. There will be a save option beside it after.

You seem to have missed the point of the Android environment. I have various options on my devices. One of them is Mailwasher. I can even use my browser.
And that is just the tip of the iceberg. Try these:
K-9 Mail – Android Apps on Google Play
myMail—Free Email Application – Android Apps on Google Play
All Email Providers – Android Apps on Google Play
I could go on – there's a heap of them, a dozen or more – but don't want to rub salt into the wounds.

That makes life more complicated.
But email is email. It isn't locked to the device you use. (Ignore Simona Simmy. They clearly don't have a clue. What does the play store have anything to do with your email?)
Can you forward the message to a PC account that might have a bit more capability?
Or is that what you meant by the Outlook app?
I can get at all of my email accounts on my Android devices and on my PC. So, if I get an email through gmail, I can also access it from my PC, first with my browser, then with any other email client I like.
