Last time I used Android there was a SMS and Mail app, I recently got a Nexus 5 (Lollipop) and I have hangout and gmail, is there anyway I can remove hangout and gmail and use the sms and email app? By the way my device is already rooted (couldn't wait )
I personally love Hangouts, but there's also the "Messenger" app which is the new SMS. As far as email goes, the old Email app has been integrated into Gmail. Settings / Add Account.

Sorry about this can you please move it to Q/A.
No problem I have contacted a Moderator. Should get moved soon. You might want to read the XDA rules before making any more threads in the future. Thanks for understanding

But to answer your question. You can use root uninstaller or Titanium Backup to uninstall system apps. Then grab what ever apps you want from the play store. All google apps were moved to the play store including messaging and email apps

I got the messenger app and it's perfect, is there a replacement app for gmail so I can add my emails, it's very frustrating to have to use Gmail, specuially when you need switch between emails quickly.

Use the messenger and email app from AOSP GAPPS.

It only takes 2 clicks to switch between added email accounts in Gmail. IMHO that's about as quick and simple as it could get (and if memory serves, the same number of clicks required in the old Email app).
There are email apps that will combine your inboxes if that is what you are looking for. I use mail droid. But just have a look on the Play store.

Hello all,
I just released a free application/service that forwards your SMS messages to e-mail addresses you define, and also sends responses back when you reply to the received e-mails (coming from your own number). Etext uses Google's Cloud 2 Device Messaging (C2DM) to notify your phone without polling every x minutes, hence the Android 2.2 requirement. It's designed so that it can actually replace the default SMS application's notifications, and to be able to reply to incoming messages from any device that's able to receive e-mail, no matter where you are.
The application is brand new on the market, so it would be great if the XDA community could give it a try. Screenshots and a more thorough description can be found on the Android Market (or should I say Google Play). Below is a link, and a QR code that you can scan on your device. If you have any questions or suggestions you can always post here or e-mail me!

Hey!
Did a quick test this and it works well Will do more tests soon.
Was wondering what the real purpose is. I mean ... wouldn't SMS be more reachable than emails given that for email a net connection is necessary, while it is not necessary for SMS?
I'll be using this to have a record of my messages in my mail and occasionally to save a wee bit on my message bills!

It bugged me that I couldn't receive SMS messages or reply to them when I was using my tablet (or any other device for that matter). That's basically why I started working on the application. It worked pretty well for myself, so I decided to implement C2DM and release it on the market. A plus is that I can now search for a name on GMail and get the text messages as well.
I'm looking to sideload the sms app that i've had with two previous android phones. After getting my new N5 yesterday, it seems the stock 'messaging' app has been replaced in favor of hangouts. New to hangouts, but after about a day, i can say f-that. I know other sms apps are out there, but i really just want the one I've had for years. I promise I've used the search feature, please don't fault me if this info is out there.

The problem is that the messaging app wasn't installed. My N5 was bought from the play store jsut this week. Maybe it is installed on the t-mobile or sprint variants? Has anyone pulled that apk and posted it anywhere? My wife just got an unlocked moto x and it has it.

Thanks, I see it's not totally the stock messaging app, but I will give it a try. It mentions a lack of bloat, but new useful features. Anyone know what additional features are that they've added?

Which is? The one on the phone? What's that? (I have couple of "standard clients" on my android phone.)
Can you forward the message to an email account that you can access on a PC?
Is there an email accnt that can't be accessed through pc? If you are using the stock mail client. Once you open it. There will be a save option beside it after.

You seem to have missed the point of the Android environment. I have various options on my devices. One of them is Mailwasher. I can even use my browser.
And that is just the tip of the iceberg. Try these:
K-9 Mail – Android Apps on Google Play
myMail—Free Email Application – Android Apps on Google Play
All Email Providers – Android Apps on Google Play
I could go on – there's a heap of them, a dozen or more – but don't want to rub salt into the wounds.

That makes life more complicated.
But email is email. It isn't locked to the device you use. (Ignore Simona Simmy. They clearly don't have a clue. What does the play store have anything to do with your email?)
Can you forward the message to a PC account that might have a bit more capability?
Or is that what you meant by the Outlook app?
I can get at all of my email accounts on my Android devices and on my PC. So, if I get an email through gmail, I can also access it from my PC, first with my browser, then with any other email client I like.

No discouragement intended, but most of the stuff you've written down is possible with Google Assistant; With the exception of adding numbers into the contacts (which is redundant anyway or not entirely useful at all).
So yeah, you're app in fact does try to resemble a voice-triggered assistant. Thing is, you can just call GA and ask it for the same stuff and it'll pop the results instead of first opening your app and then clicking on the specific tile to launch f.e. Google Search.
Again, no discouragement intended, but the app just doesn't seem to have actual productivity value in it.
People can always use the dedicated app for the required service and those usually have Voice Search.
Nice! Working!
Thread cleaned.

Is there any alternative to old SMS Backup+ app? I want SMS messages uploaded to Gmail and watch them like conversation. SMS Backup & Restore is great but not that great because messages are in .xml file and I can't see contacts separetly.
Maybe you can try Coolmuster Android Backup Manager, if your phone is Android based. This tool can help us back up text messages and other data from Android phone to the computer easily. Then you can check it easily. And more, it's free to do that. Just have a try.
actually I tried on another way.I have web hosting and now I upload SMS messages to the server.
But I have email address from web hosting paired with gmail my messages are not mowed on gmail.
But at least now I can upload messages online.

how and what do you use to upload to your server?
I already have my own blog website. So I created another email address which is used only for SMS backup. And then put IMAP settings from this email to SMS Backup+

okay thanks
I read up on accessing it this way using an app password
how safe is this though do you know?
seems like if the sms+ app was compromised, they would have a password to get into my gmail account which bypasses 2factor
I don't know how safe it is. But if they want to get into your gmail account that would do even when it was only one click away from connecting.
But now they can access only to your another email address.

I'll just make a gmail account for SMS texts only, thanks!!
Oh, you thinking of mail gmail account. Maybe you can try other email providers, like yahoo.
On your gmail you can only transfer emails. But because it was in different folder gmail did not automatically transfer. You need to do it manually. It's annoying, yes.
But more safely because you can select what you want to transfer.
