I have a N986U1 with unlocked bootloader running stock One 3.1 UI. I cannot get my adaptive brightness work properly. I have to turn it off and back on before it'll be the correct brightness. It did this with One 3.0 UI too, but I believe it was working properly before unlocking bootloader. Is there a workaround? TIA

I do not think that this issue is caused by unlocking the bootloader.
Hopefully it will be fixed in next firmware updates.
Here is a thread about brightness issues for your device:

After upgrading my C2104 to 15.3.A.0.26, my screen brightness keeps on varying looks like screen flickering. When brightness is set to lowest it can be easily observed while at max brightness it is not noticeable.
Strangely when I make a call or plug in the charger screen stops to flicker!
I tried downgrading to 15.0.A.2.17, where I did not encounter this issue.
Is anybody else having the same problem, it's very disappointing!!!
Yes, I'm also facing this issue.
Yes me 2!! This is really scary!
Everybody is facing the same issue , its the software problem i think !
For the sake of testing , i am downgrading for now to check if the brightness issue still persists there !

i think we need to wait for sony to release a hotfix update for the flickering screen...and yeah it is software problem
Does anybody else is having this issue?
Everytime I turn on my phone, the screen varies on the intensity of the brightness while booting, so you would see it too bright, and then the brightness goes a little soft and then very bright again. All of this happens while booting.
Is this normal or did I do something wrong?
I have stock Rom, stock kernel and rooted.
Normal.
It's normal (I assume as mine does it). Is it that much of an issue?

I don't mind about this, but I thought there was something wrong with my phone.
Nope, it's perfectly alright. Every Nexus does that.
I've had Z3 since january and never had any problems with it. Yesterday I installed 5.1.1 Nordic build and while all went smoothly I have this problem with contrast or gamma right after unlocking screen. It goes all the way up, stays crazy for a few seconds and than goes normal. It is incredibly annoying. It is not brightness which goes way up, but contrast or gamma as it washes out the colors and looks horrible.
It happens only if Adaptive brightness is turned on, and no matter if it is dark or light outside. Tried playing with X-reality but no change.
I really have no idea what is going on, so any ideas are welcome.
Thank you for your time!
it's a known bug on the new .546 build
Ahh than I'm cool Thanks, where do you follow the known bugs and stuff? I searched here and didn't find anything
Yeah. I'm having the same issue with . 546, is so annoying
Oh yes me too, after 5.1.1, just turn off adaptive brightness. At least after the new update released
Edit: i thought the problem is only with notification shade pulled down, it's actually on all display?? Now it really is annoying to me, although not too much
@Melhisedek: we all knew it because we've experienced it

It happens to me too .. I do not know what to do !!
.580 didn't fix this problem, nor the bold clock on the lockscreen.
This is not only since the .546 version.
It was there on 5.0.2. Atleast for me...
After turning on power saving mode then turning it off, brightness is changing when opening some apps like dialer and google chrome. Similar to EMUI 4.1 when power mode was set to smart but it is happening even when off in EMUI 5.
Before turning on power saving mode for the first time, brightness was always constant.

It's a known issue and was reported over a month ago on b317.
It happens without ever using power saver on some phones

In emui 4.1, brightness is supposed to reduce in some apps whilst set to 'smart'
In emui 5 when you enabled power saving mode, it reduces the overall brightness. But when you turn it off, the overall brightness goes back to normal but now the brightness is acting like it did in emui 4.1 whilst set to smart. It reduces in some apps. Tried restarting phone but doing the same thing.
I'm using Chinese rom b368 released 2 days ago

Is there any fix? Really annoying me every time I open up chrome the brightness changes, then again when you exit it. How do bugs like this even get past testing, so obvious.
Also is your option for reducing screen resolution working? Doesn't seem to do anything for me, worked fine in 4.1. Now it just stays at 1920x1080 when I enable it instead of dropping to 1280x720

Not working, noticed that too!
This is probably due to the fact that EMUI 5 is still in it's Beta stage and has allot of bugs that need to be ironed out before it's commercial release.

On second thought I believe that screen brightness and connected power management is managed much worse then under EMUI 4. Power saving is accessible only through settings and it takes over screen brightness management completely. Besides it doesn't work well.

Hopefully the actual release of Nougat with fixes these problems.
@spix123 putting brightness too 100% works as a temp workaround

Yep but that's no go indoors, personally I always leave brightness at around 60% unless its really bright outside

I'm on the very latest China release which is much more frequent than international and the bug is still there. Hopefully its not one of those bugs that people aren't reporting enough and will be stuck in it for months
Where can I fill bug reports. Those things are annoying.
Brand new phone, updated to nougat throu HiCare. Brightness in chrome, gmail and file manager changes every time when I open them. Also the powersaving option with lower resolution doesnt work for me either.

I have the same issue, did you fix it?
I realized that lowest brightness level in EUMI 5 is brighter than in EUMI 4.1 ??
Really stupid bug that shows how poor emui developers are. Still in latest chinese developer rom, no sign that developers are even aware of the problem. Don't know how so few little people are reporting this, must be blind.
It should only happen when power saving mode is enabled like it did in older emui.
It causes so many problems. I have screen set to my preferred brightness then it dims so much when I open browser that I have to increase brightness every time. The only work around is to use 100% brightness all the time, then it does not dim the screen but this just a stupid waste of battery and bad for your eyes indoors.

Yeah its still there on emui 5.0 and 5.1 i have mate 9 pro and p10 plus and both of them has the same issues
Ok, now we are in november and the problem persists -_-
My c5 recently got a problem when I restarted my device. Its screen got dimmer then before. Its brightness control is working but screen brightness at low level is too low that one could barely see. And at higher level it isn't bright then before. As brightness is decreased from a higher level it starts to get a pink or reddish tint which gets higher at lower level with to much dark display.
What problem could it be? Is it a hardware issue or software one?

Try flashing the stock firmware, if it doesn't fix this then it is probably a hardware problem.

I factory reset it but it haven't worked for me. So still should I reinstall a stock rom using the odin method??

Obviously, that is why I said to flash the firmware.

Same problem. I think is hardware problem. After around week in full power off state, screen again works normal few days and again get problem. And after few day working with bad brightness screen fully not working (after reboot) and need week in turnoff to return working.
