Problems with contrast after unlocking screen - Xperia Z3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've had Z3 since january and never had any problems with it. Yesterday I installed 5.1.1 Nordic build and while all went smoothly I have this problem with contrast or gamma right after unlocking screen. It goes all the way up, stays crazy for a few seconds and than goes normal. It is incredibly annoying. It is not brightness which goes way up, but contrast or gamma as it washes out the colors and looks horrible.
It happens only if Adaptive brightness is turned on, and no matter if it is dark or light outside. Tried playing with X-reality but no change.
I really have no idea what is going on, so any ideas are welcome.
Thank you for your time!

it's a known bug on the new .546 build

Ahh than I'm cool Thanks, where do you follow the known bugs and stuff? I searched here and didn't find anything

Yeah. I'm having the same issue with . 546, is so annoying

Oh yes me too, after 5.1.1, just turn off adaptive brightness. At least after the new update released
Edit: i thought the problem is only with notification shade pulled down, it's actually on all display?? Now it really is annoying to me, although not too much
@Melhisedek: we all knew it because we've experienced it

It happens to me too .. I do not know what to do !!

.580 didn't fix this problem, nor the bold clock on the lockscreen.

This is not only since the .546 version.
It was there on 5.0.2. Atleast for me...

[Q] colors washed out on 2.3.3?

justed updated to 2.3.3 and the colors seem VERY washed out
anyone else notice this?
Same here, many others with the same issue. This sucks!
damn i know! not using the screen to its full capabilities. oh well. voodoo color is always an alternative.
Anyone whos rooted installed this update ? can we re-root and unlock bootloader ? and then install a old nadroid back up?
yes after you update, you have to fastboot flash clockwork, then boot into clockwork and flash the su zip. then if you want clockwork to stick (not get overwritten after every reboot) you have to rename the file called "install-recovery.sh" in the /etc folder. i just rename it to install-recovery.sh.old

I am running a stock NS on 2.3.3 and I run my display brightness to just above the lowest possible setting. What I noticed after loading 2.3.3 was the screen looked dimmer at that same brightness setting. I simply upped it a little bit and now it looks fine to me. I don't see any yellow tint or anything.

well i usually set it to auto brightness, but after upping it a little bit, it is improved. i wish it was better at lower brightness levels.
colours on mine seems washed out too...
i have the same issue, the colors are more horrible than was in 2.3.2
The colors have always been horrible on the ns with the auto-brightness setting. Voodoo ftw!

Damn, the 2.3.3 update converts our AMOLED screen to a SLCD screen
Yes the screen looks terrible. Google NEEDS to fix this..
Looks like they changed the whitepoint from cool blue to warm yellow. Gonna take some getting used to. Meh.
I've always left my phone on auto brightness since I first got it. With this update the colours look more natural but looks like they have knocked down the contrast a few notches and upped the brightness a touch. The greys definitely look a few shades lighter. Its probably more at reference level now, im sure ill get used to it.

yes, just updated here as well and same thing. i really notice it on the whites, seem very yellowish... other than that looks normal to
It looks like the autobrightness feature is set a little lower than before. And, it is a lot slower to readjust to changes in ambient light. If I manually increase the brightness, then my screen doesn't look any different than before the update.
DRL
The greys actually look like grey now. Before the update, it was a bit reddish, the redness is very obvious when the screen brightness is set to low (and if you activate the Screen Filter app, the redness becomes more obvious).

Yeah, colors are off. I went back to 2.3.2

App for locking the screen brightness?

Hashcode and twa_priv both have great ROM's out now, that work wonders with the battery drain in standby. One of my kids gets -15 or less drain when in deep sleep now. Amazing.
But my other daughter, hers keeps spiking up over -120 and higher while using the same rom. I saw that the screen brightness cant be set to 100 or the screen doesn't fully shut off, and that is exactly what is happening. I can still see a dim backlight sometimes when turned off.
I keep changing it to a lower setting, and then she gets great battery life for a while, then something is changing the screen brightness back to 100. She isnt doing it, because I grounded her from it for a couple days, and it still did it when she wasn't even playing. So I wiped everything, clean installed the 01/08 rom fresh today, and it still does it.
Is there an app that will lock the brightness for me? I cant seem to find one.
Thanks!
I had that same issue on my KF repeatedly and found that it was from build.prop changes. Switched to Paranoid Android and the in notification brightness slider has been perfect and the screen off/on issue never came back.

Cool, thanks for the tip!
Once I studied this Kindle closer, you could see the screen backlight come on for a few seconds, then back to sleep, then back on, and back to sleep. A clean install of the latest rom from twa_priv seems to have fixed the problem, he reverted some kernal changes that were causing problems for some users.
Funny that you are in Eustis, I live there and in Mt. Dora for a while, back around 1988 to maybe 1993. I am in Ocala now.

Nexus 5 auto brightness problems?

Hey guys,
I'm using my new nexus 5 for about two days now and something seems to be wrong with auto brightness (at least) on my device. The phone makes the screen brighter just fine, but dimming it when it gets in a dark environment doesn't seem to work really well. Can someone give this a try please?
Just turn off the lights in a room and see if the screen adjusts correctly. On mine it doesn't.
Turning on and off auto brightness fixes the issue but as soon as the screen gets brighter again, the problem starts...
Thanks in advance

Good spot, I seem to experience this as well ! Exactly as you say works fine until the brightness gets set higher then it wont ever fall back its as if it can never lower only increase brightness.... odd!
Did you give it a minute to adjust?
Since my Nexus 5 isn't here yet this is what I've observed on stock Android in the Galaxy Nexus and other phones:
While it should go down after some time it's pretty common for auto brightness not to dim down as soon as it gets darker. You don't want your brightness to jump up and down just because the lighting changes for a second. And since turning the brightness up is much more relevant than down it goes up almost instantly but before dimming back down it monitors the environment for a while.
When you turn auto brightness off and on again you force the sensor into a new reading so this should set the brightness to the correct level without delay.
But it wouldn't be the first time auto brightness was bugged on a phone.
The delay really annoyed me on my tablet running vanilla 4.2 so installed lux which works well. You set the brightness how you want it at a given light level and then it sets the brightness according to the ambient light each time you wake it up and holds that setting until the next time you wake it up... best of both worlds.

You're right gokpog,it does work I just didn't give it time. It took around 10 seconds to change the backlight levels which is much longer than the nexus 4 which is why I didn't notice it. Hopefully there is a more sensitive curve in the future

Yep this has been the case with stock android for a while. Feature or flaw you decide but it is what it is and is across the board no matter what device if its using stock android on it

Well it doesn't seem to work as expected to me: go to a bright place, then to a very dark one. Yes it will dim a bit but not quite enough. Remain in the dark room and turn off auto brightness. Then turn it on again. The screen will get significantly darker than it was before

I have find too that the automatic brightness take time to decrease brightness, also increase, but the most annoying is that with the same level of light and without moving the phone, the brightness goes up and down erratically, without a reason, it didn't happen with any of my previous phones
I just installed this app today, I've had similar problems that weren't present on my N4. With this app running, when I turn the phone screen toward a light, it brightens, and back to face a darker place it dims almost immediately. To give me more battery life I've tuned the brightness curve to be a bit low, N5's auto seemed to be too bright for me overall anyway. Be sure to tinker with both the settings and advanced settings areas, by default the changes are sharp but you can make them fade instead. Fixed the problems I had at least.

I have the same problem with my Nexus 5.
Additionally, since day one, I've noticed that the phone consistently auto adjusts the screen to be slightly brighter than necessary given the ambient light.
I just noticed this issue last night, or at least it's similar. I was reading in bed for a few hours and occasionally (maybe every 15 minutes) the screen would suddenly dim to about half brightness and then brighten back to where it was originally. It was driving me nutz. I've also had a few random reboots, though not while I was using it. I'd notice it on my table booting up. FYI, this is stock with the latest update, no root or unlocking, and still has plenty of free space in memory. I've only had it for about 4 days.

Colour temp changes with brightness level

Hi
I searched and found nothing similar to this issue.
My 1+1 bought a few months ago has always had this issue noticeable when changing brightness levels.
I've not modified anything at all, waiting for CM12S before I start thinking about any deeper changes, so I'm currently still running stock 11S. My phone doesn't have the Cyanogen logo on the back.
Issue: when altering the brightness level up, the screen turns markedly green. Turning down the brightness it goes to a pink hue.
Is this a fault with the hardware?
Thanks

Sudden appearance of yellow tinge on Pixel 3a

Hello All!
I have been using my Pixel 3a for 5 months and have absolutely loved it.
Although last night when I was using it in a decently lit environment, on 0% brightness, the screen went into a shade of yellow tinge , kind of like the night light, but not entirely. Now I'm not sure if this is a software glitch or a hardware problem. I tried booting it into the safe mode to check if any third party apps are causing it, but no luck, the yellow tinge still prevails.
At higher brightness this tinge is visible lesser, but i think it's still there, just the high brightness makes it a little better.
Anyone had this problem before? I'm really hoping this is a software glitch and looking to solve it all by myself. It's definitely not possible for me to go visit a Google Pixel store at times like these to get it fixed. Fingers crossed!
Kind of sounds like night light under settings>display>night light. I have mine set to enable from sunset to sunrise. Removes blue hues to help you rest better.
Whoops NVM you already called out night light. Sorry man not sure. Maybe a bedtime routine?
