Dialing a star (*) number from outside the country? - General Questions and Answers

Hello,
Usually, to call a foreign country, I use either Skype-to-call or a calling card. This works for regular numbers. But there is one specific company that I have to call and that only provides a star (*) number on their website in the format *1234. Can such a number be called from outside the country? I couldn't find much help with this on Google. The only relevant result I found says that star codes are abbreviated numbers, and suggests to have a friend inside the country dial the abbreviated number (*1234) and ask them for the full number. I did this, and the company wouldn't give to my friend the full number. Any other solutions?
Thank you in advance!

You can try to dial the country prefix first (e.g. "001" for the USA) and then the start number. IDK if it works, but worth a try.

Calling Around The World

Okay, I've searched extensively and can't find a definitive way of dealing with this simply question.
I have contacts in various countries and call them from different countries. When I am in a different country, I would need to call them using the country code which is what the numbers are stored. However, when I am in the country, I have to make local call without the country code and area code.
What's the best way to do this without editing the numbers to take away the country code+area code when I am in that country?
I hope to hear from someone who travels extensively and share his/her best practices.
sorry? why do you have to take away the country code? all of my numbers are stored in that format, it's the easier thing to do.

So that you call it as a local number.

Little hint: you can make local calls using +00 123 456789 too and they don't charge you internationally. Maybe this is why some people wonder why you're asking this question.
ALL my numbers are stored in the +00 123 456789 format, so I don't have to think about it when I'm abroad.

Invalid Phone Numbers Problem [SOLVED]

Thought I'd post this issue since I've run into it since I got my new G1. Possibly if someone has a well read blog it's worth posting there for Google to index! There must be others who have this problem. Anyway..
I moved all my numbers across via my SIM card. It seems the SIM cropped all the pluses (+) from the front of all numbers with +447... in my contacts. (+44 is UK code).
Now, a +447.. number is valid, and a 07.. number is valid, but a 447.. number is NOT!!
This I did not know. Now I need to fix 100+ numbers in my contacts.
Further to this, and G1 specific:
In Messaging if I send a message to a 07.. number it goes in a new thread. The reply will always (I think) come back with +447.. as the prefix. This means it starts its own new thread! Annoying at best.
I would recommend everyone change their numbers to use the correct +blah.. country prefix.
Also, the Messaging app could be a bit cleverer with parsing number prefixes when it comes to threading up messages . Android dev team reading??
Anyone else had this problem? Any comments?

Solution: reveal / show unknown / withheld caller's phone number

Please read all of the following -
I have set-up a service that will reveal the phone number of any prank caller / someone who withholds their phone number.
It does cost me to do this so obviously I can't reveal how it works (against the community posting rules here)
I am and this service is UK based and perfectly legal (obviously!)
At the moment, a google search will reveal that nobody else can do this anywhere.....
WHAT I AM LOOKING FOR...
I am looking for 5-10 volunteers to test the service and give feedback - Ideally regular contributors/members who have been on this site for a while
Please note that I won't be able to reply to everyone!
It won't cost you anything other than maybe 1 inclusive minute!
HOW THE TEST WILL WORK...
You must be UK based
You simply use any phone to ring a unique UK based number that I will give you - making sure you withhold your number. I will contact you with the actual number you called from.
This is classed as a standard UK based mobile number and will only come out of your free minutes. If you have any doubts, it's simple - move on, I'm not here to con anyone, and I know that I am a new user etc... but follow your instincts - if in doubt...move on!
IF YOU WANT TO VOLUNTEER...
Send me a private message, a quick note about who you are and to confirm that you are UK based! I will forward you the details you need. At the moment, the service takes a number of hours to work - eventually this will be instant. I won't be able to respond to everyone!
WHY AM I POSTING HERE...
Because I was sick of nobody being able to tell me who was pranking me with a private / withheld number - in the end I had to change my phone number. I scoured the web - and there wasn't a solution - so I created one.
Like I said, the testing part is free - and I can't reveal how it works because it does cost me to reveal a withheld / private number and rules here prevent me from charging people for a service
SO...
If you meet the criteria above, and want to test the service and provide some feedback in this thread, please contact me.
Otherwise, I welcome any other constructive comments and I will attempt to respond! - don't ask me how it works - read above to see why!
hi how can I get this so I know who is calling me with held. interested in knowing
Ho how can u assist you to know who is calling with eld

[Q] Calling info screen Android (company name, adres)

Hello Friends,
I have recently installed new Android 4.1 on my HTC Desire Z and wished that simple issue had been finally added to the software. But I was wrong...
Maybe any of you know how to customize Calling In (and maybe Call out) screen to see other contact info if exist like. Company name, address, work title etc.
Most of us does not have only Name and Phone Number in Contacts. I have more that 2000 contacts and many of them are same name like John from Company A and John from Company B. Unfortunately when they are calling I see only Name and Phone number (and picture where normally I do not have )
Please if there is any customization possibility to see more contact info when calling please help to solve it.
I had similar requirement.
I zeroed on DW Contacts Pro. Has what you require and much more.
Its available on play store just search.

[Q] Banner ads capturing mobile number

Hello all,
Just wondering if anyone can help with a question and hope this is in right forum.
Does anyone know how these banner ads get your phone number?
I have had three explanations:
The banner ad and an email from the company say that they contact my service provider and the SP supply the number.
My service provider tell me they absolutely do not give customers numbers to third parties.
Via a phone call to the company they said it requires the user to enter their phone number and click submit. (I know for sure this didn't happen.)
Don't know which to believe now!
Would appreciate anyone who knows more about this if they could let me know.
Thanks
Rob
