Which Android should I Root? - General Questions and Answers

Hey guys...
I'm looking into the feasibility of building a small mobile proxy network.
I need rooted and unlocked Android phones.
Many places sell unlocked phones, and I will probably end-up using a service like T-Mobile.
What I'm unsure about is which unlocked Androids are going to be the most cost-effective (cheap as possible) and high performing, while also being easy to root the system.
There are some options out-there for buying pre-rooted phones, but they tend to be from the S5 line, or earlier.
So, I'm looking for recommendations as to the best way I might approach this.
What phone models can you guys recommend?
Thanks!
Ivan

Best budget Android phone to root & hack?

Hi
I have searched the forums but have not found the answer to my question yet.
I want to know which is the best budget Android phone (Magic?, Dream? etc) as I intend to root and install my a custom Rom. I can't afford the Droid or Nexus yet.
Any ideas which is the best to go for?
Thanks
John
I'm a fairly new Android user endowing myself with the wonders of rooting. I currently have the myTouch 3G, it was fairly cheap (not so much anymore due to T-Mobile's unreasonable pricing as compared to Nexus One). On the bright side, the myTouch (G1 too) has the most custom ROMs available to an android device. But do note that most of the ROMs aim to achieve the features of newer devices. So it would be reasonable to just buy a new device that costs 50 dollars more than a myTouch...I'm looking at you Nexus. ):

[Q] What Android based phone for ATT?

Hello, and hope I'm not wasting time and forum space with my personal question here.
I currently have an HTC Tilt 2 on ATT, and after getting annoyed with WinMo 6.5 and it's sluggishness I looked into putting Android on it. I discovered that I rather enjoy Android, however it just doesn't seem like the Tilt 2 works as a dedicated Android phone. I don't think I need to elaborate on why, but some functions just aren't there and might never be, battery seems to be twice as worse(I'm aware of the not entirely functional battery meter). Just a lot of little things.
For reasons I'd rather not get into, I'm more or less stuck with ATT as my mobile phone carrier. I'm up for an upgrade/renewal soon and as far as I know the Samsung Captivate is the only worthwhile Android base phone they have.
So after all that preamble, basically I want to know what all of my viable options are for Android based phones on ATT are and peoples suggestions. I've tried doing some research on my own, but I've been having limited success and a lot of conflicting results.
We can ignore costs, at least as far as throwing the phones out as possibilties but of course it's always good to know. The Captivate with a renewal is 200$ I believe, and I figure if that is the phone to go I'd have to do some ROM changing or something because ATT, is well, ATT.
So I'm interested in all possible phones, import, unbranded, rebranded, unlocked, just whatever will work on ATT's bands/sim.
Thanks

Where should I be looking?

Currently I'm running a DVP (windows 7 phone) and I do love it but i've been considering loaning it to my gf and getting myself another phone.
I have no experience with android phones or software so i'm not 100% sure what I should be looking at for a phone.
What I do know is that the phone has to be able to use the t-mobile 1700/2100 frequencies for the carrier I am using here in Canada. I would like a physical keyboard but they are becoming very rare. I also want the ability to tether to my laptop and be able to upgrade the memory past 32gig. As well as ability to use any cooked ROM people make. I guess pretty much a mini PC, just like my HTC touch pro 2 has always been.
Where should i be looking as far as phones are concerned? What is the best phone? Should i be waiting for all phones to run android 3.0? WHat should I be looking at here, and if i'm going to bring a phone up from the states I expect i'm going to have to pay so not worried about the cost at this point.
thx

iPhone user Switching to Android - Need Help

Hey everybody, I am thinking about switching over to Android. I am a total android newb, I have only really messed around briefly with a few different android phones over the years, so I don't have much experience with them. I consider myself an iDevice expert, I've had almost every iPhone, 2 iPads, and helped dozens of people jailbreak, learn to use their iphones, fixed them, sold them, etc. I am also highly proficient with both windows and mac and have hacked many different gaming consoles so i am not worried about learning a new system. Also i'm currently on verizon. I just want to skip the time it takes scouring the internet for tips and tricks and everything I need to know about android and I am looking for help from anybody who can.
I have a basic understanding of droids, in that I know they are open for loading custom roms, i know they generally come preinstalled with horrible bloatware versions of android from the service providers.
I am mainly looking for the following things:
-up to date android basic guides, advanced use guides, ROM info, hacking info
-Resource and news websites similar to iClarified, RedmondPie, ModMyi, Sinful iPhone, etc focused on droid news, tweaks, hacks, etc
-info on which devices are generally considered the best or if i should hold out for an upcomming phone (particularly on verizon & in usa)
-which ROMs are considered best and what the differences are and their comparability to the devices out there
-equivalents of iPhone tweaks that I love (aka PDANet [free tethering], ifile, winterboard, 3g unrestricter, swipeselection, manualcorrect pro, multitasking, installous [and its alternatives] etc) and i am aware some of that stuff is just stock android
-any other things i didn't mention that you may think is helpful to me
also in case you are wondering why i am considering switching its because ive had an iphone forever and i'm getting bored with it. i also am sick of dealing with apple stifling innovative jailbreaking tweaks, itunes being awful and mandatory, small screen (even on i5), and i am generally dissapointed at how little iOS has changed since the iphone 3g.
so in closing, i would really appreciate any insight into being an android pro

Not sure what you mean by this. But rooting / hacking phones vary from phone to phone and you find all info in this forum.

Most of them you can find in Google Play sometimes here on forum. I'm not aware of any must have Android tweak unavailable in Play. Most of tweeks are included in custom roms and you choose rom with tweeks you need. Sometimes with installers like Aroma installer you can choose different functions / tweaks when you install rom.
Hope, this will help.

thanks for the info
Also pay attention to the device you get as Verizon is known for locking their bootloaders making it very difficult to flash custom roms. Also I would read up on Linux
For me Paranoid Android is the best rom. It supports a wide no of devices. And theres a new featured called "Halo" coming up which changes the way notifications show up on your phone and it is AWESOME

i was leaning towards the galaxy s4, as far as i know its gonna be the best verizon droid as far as power goes. i heard the htc one is possibly going to be released on verizon soon as well. if you have any other suggestions i would like to hear it. i usually upgrade my phone every year so i like to get the new hot thing, that is one of the reasons i am thinking about jumping ship on iphone. the stock iphone experience is not only ugly, but crippled compared to what you can do with jailbreak tweaks, and i hate getting the new device and then waiting months for a jailbreak.

Well that depends on if Big red locks the bootladers or not. I would suggest Nexus but they dont work well on big red.

ROM/Firmware Business

Hello everyone!
As I am searching for a "new" used phone and see website with refurbished -and partly updated- phones, I wonder if it is possible to make more phones interesting for resale by installing custom ROMs / firmware plus the other refurbish stuff. I think it should be possible that ROM coders/designers/programmers here+elsewhere and refurbishers could work (an earn) together.
Why shouldn't one start such a business?
No opinions?
nobody?
