Any tricks for verifying chat features? - OnePlus 7 Pro Questions & Answers

Are there any tricks to getting the chat feature to work in Google Messages that I don't know about? I've tried all the usual things several times. Airplane mode, clearing data on both Messages and Carrier Services. All I get is this.

The process tp turn chat features on or off
1. On your device, open Messages
2. At the top right, tap More. Settings.
3. Tap Chat features.
4. "Enable chat features" on or off.

Yes, I've done this several times. You can see in my screenshot that it's shows as "setting up". It's been like this for days.

What country are you on?, Remember that not all countries are supported, also what worked for me, was to download "Google carrier services" and "Google connectivity services" from the play store. I was having the same issues and those two help with connecting to chat services.

I'm in the US. I downloaded carrier services. I'll try connectivity services.

go back to stock message app from google voice?

My number was ported to Google voice some time ago. Since then I have to use their app for txt. I really want to get rid of the app but then my txt won't appear. Anyone know a way around this? Am I mistaken?
Go to Google Voice online (not from your phone). And disable the Sprint integration under Settings. On the Phone tab, I believe there's a "Disable Sprint Integration" link or something similar. There's also a "Disable Google voicemail on this phone" link.
Once that's done, get rid of Google Voice altogether from your phone and download a third party visual voicemail app from the market (I'm using YouMail). With no Google Voice integration, your texts will automatically go to the stock app.
There is also a posibility that his number has been manually ported to GV and now it's on Google Voice side no matter what carier. In this case I believe there is still an option to send a text or email to your phone in GV settings so that you can get ride of GV app from your phone all together.
However, if you think about it, if all your texts go through GV it means you won't have to back them up and restore them when you flash new roms. They are kept all in GV servers... you know... in the cloud So there is a benefit to that.
Careful with Google Voice.
They gave a number I had been using for a year to someone else.
It happened out of the blue. Repeated attempts to contact Google were met with silence....
Nice idea, but like many Google ideas, it's half-baked and there is no recourse if there is a problem.

How to disable "data saver" mode on Maxx in 4.4?

Does anyone know how to disable "data saver" mode in 4.4?
(I'd also be psyched if there was a way to automatically download all email attachments over mobile data.)
If anyone knows how to do this and has a minute to share, greatly appreciated -- thanks!

I don't think the Maxx has a built in data saver mode. Is something appearing in your notifications window? Also, for the email attachments, are you referring to the email client or gmail?

No, I can't stand GMail. I'm using the stock Android mail app.
It mentions a "data saver mode" in various situations.
For example, if I try to email a large attachment, it tells me it will remain in the outbox until Wi-Fi is available because of "data saver mode."
Another example, whenever someone sends me an email with an attachment, I always have to open the email and then manually download the attachment.
I have unlimited data and am rarely on WiFi so I'm looking to turn off this "data saver mode" so everything will download automatically so when I open an email the attachment will already be there.
Or when I need to email with a large attachment the "data saver mode" won't make it wait in the outbox until I can get get to Wi-Fi.
And anyone willing to help me figure this out, please don't tell me to switch to GMail or use K-9, etc. I really hope to figure this out using the stock client by disabling "data saver mode."
Any hhelp appreciated - thanks!

Ah, now I understand where you are coming from. There is a whole Data Usage section that manages that under Settings > Account Name (see attached)

Thanks for the quick reply.
Yeah I know that screen.
I have download size set to max and auto download enabled but still have the issues I mentioned at the start of the thread.
Maybe here?

Google Voice integration with Hangouts on iOS?

I use google voice as my main number. (Good thing too as my iPad has become my phone while I work on fixing mine.) Since it's my main number I have the Google Voice app on my iPad Mini. I opened it up and saw a message saying that I can now receive my Google Voice SMS in hangouts. I tap the launch hangouts button, it opens hangouts, asks me to sign in, and nothing happens. I don't see any of my GV messages nor can I send an SMS. I haven't heard any news about this. Even a Google search returned nothing. I've attached a screen shot. Am I the only one seeing this?

I am seeing this too but it does nothing. No hang outs update in the App Store. No additional options in either app.

You have to first enable the functionality in gmail. It seems that unfortunately, you have to do this on a desktop.
1. Log in to gmail in a browser.
2. Click on the hangouts icon on the bottom left. If it is not there, it may be a camera or just a chat bubble. If this is the case, there will then be a selection near your username to "Try the new Hangouts". Go through this process. I had to download and install google's voice and video plugin.
3. Click the down arrow next to your username on the left sidebar.
4. Scroll down to the "Google Voice" section.
5. Check "Receive SMS and Voicemail in Hangouts".
Now you should be able to receive and reply to SMS in Hangouts on iOS. They show up in the "Hangouts" section. I have not yet figured out how to initiate an SMS.

[Q] Not receiving skype notifications

So when running Skype on my galaxy s6 (t-mobile variant but it's an app so I thought it might be all variants with this issue).
It will stay logged in and I will keep receiving messages for a short time. Even when I keep running skype in the background I will not receive notifications after a while like more than 30+ mins.
So, I have to launch the app or go through my recents and it acts as it's signing in and then I get my new messages.
It even says before you log out for the first time that you can stay logged on and keep receiving notifications without consuming the battery (which I think is bull, too).
Anyone else have this issue? Is it the app of the phone? Or the provider? This happens on data or wifi.
Also have same problem, was solved with "clear app data" and login with own account again

I'll try it out, thanks. Did you log in with your microsoft account or skype account, btw?
I believe since you mentioned you are not getting notifications after a while it is related to the same bug as email notifications.
check this out.

Messaging App

Can someone please tell me step by step how the heck one does a group chat on this phone??
Well, you need to open the app > tap on three dots in the upper right > settings > advanced > group messaging > click the toggle for "Send an MMS reply to all recipients (group MMS)"
Then when one person replies to your original message everyone you sent it to will also get the reply. [[Remember though to turn this off if you do not want everyone to see all the replies because this can load up everyone's texts with numerous replies.]]
Then just add as many contacts as you want/need to the message you are creating and then send it.

Hi Thanks for getting back to me. I tried looking for the three dots but I don't have them when I open the messaging app directly.
I'm on OREO by the way. When I go to Messenger on the App info setting I see the three dots but when I hit it all I get is Uninstall updates.
I just went to settings, Network & Internet then internet settings DL settings for internet and MMS message says "Your device will now connect to the intenet for quick setup of internet and MMS services
I accept I see that something is DL but I can't find it. Where the heck is the DL folder. Is it asking me to set this feature up??
Ok so now it says set up complete. Now what??
O so I just restarted the phone. I now have the three dots but under advanced I don't see a group messaging tab
Still don't get it!

Hey Jaseman Please bear with me I'm coming from a Galaxy Note 3. When I go to my message app it does allow me to start a group conversation. When I pick my contacts for the message I want to send it does this but then it say where the message wil go " Each recipient will get an SMS message from you. Replies will appear in individual conversations"
That's not what I'm after. I want to send a group message with all contacts being able to see what everyone in the group is responding. Is this still possible??

OK...wow...I see that you are working your way through things and getting closer.....
Now then, you need to open the app ((NOT the app in the settings menu for the phone itself...but the actual messaging app itself)) > tap on three dots in the upper right > settings > advanced > group messaging (right at the very top, tap on the words themselves) now another smaller window will open > click the toggle for "Send an MMS reply to all recipients (group MMS)"
Then when one person replies to your original message everyone you sent it to will also get the reply. [[Remember though to turn this off if you do not want everyone to see all the replies because this can load up everyone's texts with numerous replies.]]

Try again and make sure you are in the correct place.

Auto-Download MMS when roaming
Use simple characters
Get SMS delivery reports
SIM Card Messages
Phone number
I was on the phone with T-Mobile and they were dumbfounded as well. Per them All my APN settings are in order. They actually brought up the specs to this phone to see if they were missing something. They mentioned that most folks are using Textra because they can't get the messaging app to work via MMS. When I try to send a text or picture to a group the MMS arrow appears and when I press it states
" go to settings and change your group messaging setting to group MMS" Yes I know this but I do not have group MMS . T-Mobile sent me to Sony Support and they couldn't figure out why I don't have the MMS Group under advanced either and recommended I reset the phone. Look I just installed a bunch of apps and transferred over my music and books from my note 3 so I am not in the mood to reset the phone yet again. I actually got the TEXTRA app and it seems to be working just fine so I disabled the messaging app. I just need to know if it's the APP or my phone.
Well, that is certainly strange! I used Textra for a long time and it does work great. I just like to use the default apps when I can if they do what I need and the default messaging app does do everything I need.
Here is a screenshot of what mine looks like...
Sorry I was not able to help...well actually what I said was correct but I have no idea why this feature would be missing from your phone???
So when you look at the screenshot I have attached here...yours does not look like this?
I also use T-Mobile. So all of your network settings are correct?
Let's make sure...
Go to Settings > Network & Internet > tap on "Internet Settings" and a popup for Internet Settings says..."Your device will now connect to the internet for quick setup of internet and MMS services" and you tap on ACCEPT.
Then you should see a brief message saying "Download Started".
Then back on the original screen, up above Internet Settings is "Mobile network" and it says T-Mobile???
Tap on T-Mobile and at the bottom of the next window is "Service providers"...tap on this and you can choose either "Search networks", or "Automatic". If you choose Automatic you should get the message that you have been registered on the network. If you choose Search Networks it will disable your data temporarily and take a few minutes to find the network. Then you will have several choices under Available Networks and you should choose the top one 4G T-Mobile...there should be a check mark next to it. If you tap it it will say registered on network.
Now after doing all of this check your default messaging app to see if it has the same thing as my screen shot...if not...then I guess you can just stick with Textra.

Followed your instructions and after tapping Available Networks T-Mobile LTE has the checkbox. Should it be T-Mobile 4G??
Daisy192, I had the same problem when I first got my XZ Premium. The pre-installed messaging app did not include Group Messaging in the settings just like you described. I don't know why to this day. In fact, I started a thread here about it when I first got the device.
I ended up installing other SMS/MMS apps from the Play Store to get by. None of them met my needs perfectly.
Then at some point, the setting appeared when I randomly checked. I don't know what caused it to appear there but since appearing it hasn't left.
There have been a number of "Carrier Services" updates from the Play Store that I've installed over time. The description of these updates is along the lines of improved carrier features when using the stock messaging app. So maybe that's what eventually enabled the Group MMS feature.
BTW, I'm on AT&T in the USA.

LTE is fine.
I happen to have the Customized UK version. I purchased it from the UK so that the fingerprint scanner would work without having to flash anything.
I figured that the UK speaks English the same as we do here in the US and that this would make all the features work without having to do risky stuff.
Now the US version...which I believe is what you have...should say LTE, whereas the UK version says 4G...they are exactly the same thing!
Also, the US version I believe has 5 signal bars in the notification area whereas the UK version only has 4.
The number of bars is irrelevant because the OEM's can manipulate them to look great in a bad signal area thereby deceiving the end user.
The real test is what your dBm signal strength is at any given time.
Anyway, I see you got a response from someone who also had this issue and it magically fixed itself...hmmm.
Maybe after some more updates from the Play Store over time it will do the same for you. You can always check now and then.
Until it does fix itself I guess you can continue to use Textra. You will get used to it and going back to the default messaging app may be too hard to handle anyway.
Yeah seems to be a real conundrum!
Jaden and my phone is the international dual Sim version. I wanted a working fingerprint scanner too.
I will continue to check to see if it mysteriously pops up
Hey Experts today I'm going to bite the bullet and reset my phone with the Xperia Companion. Besides the main issue of not having the MMS Group setting on my Messaging APP, I am having an issue sending video to a group even though I'm using the Textra app. I am able to attached a GiF, Photo or anything else but video will not send. Yesterday I used Movie creator for the first time and created a short 19 second video compiled of a few photos. I hit share and chose the Textra app and it proceeded to send the video but then I kept getting notification that it was unable to send. After trying several times I decided to enable the Default Messages App to see if it would send video to just one person and nothing. All I got was a message that it was 'SENDING" When I awoke this morning it was still "Sending". I have my brand new Canon SL2 set up to work via Wi-Fi with my XZ Premium. I can take video and pictures, edit and do just about anything without touching the camera but I was also unable to share the one video I shot with the Textra App. Am I doing something wrong? Will The Companion fix these issues?? Is there a limit to how long a video can be when using either Textra or The Message App. Is it my Carrier T-Mobile issue?? Any suggestions will be greatly appreciate.
There is a limit on the size of the file you can send over MMS and it is rather small compared to the average video file.
Hey jaseman yes was able to finally figure it out. Reset with Xperia companion went smoothly but still no sign of mms group under advance settings. I was able to tweak settings in text rather app to 100 and legacy this allows me to send video via mms
