Install Gcam on Xiaomi Redmi Note 9S? What's in it for me? - General Questions and Answers

Hi fellas,
I recently bought a Xiaomi Redmi Note 9S, and aside from the fact that it's still running Android 10 over MIUI 12.0.3.0 (Global / EU since I'm in France) when everybody else and their cousin seems to have switched to Android 11 already, everything's peachy with the phone.
My question is borne more out of curiosity than necessity: How better would my photos be if I installed Gcam (Google Camera), rather than keep on using OpenCamera or the Xiaomi app the phone ships with? Would I really see an improvement in the way the Gcam software treats images?
If you think I'd get to gain from the install, then a second question comes to mind: How to install the config file that comes with most of the builds I've found here and there? Last time I installed Gcam on the phone, the config file came separately, and however hard I tried to follow instructions, I never managed to load the config file, so I ditched the app altogether. Patient, I am not for that kind of thing, I'll confess.
So, what gives?

gcam use some algorithm to enhance photos to high dynamic range (HDR). you may get better image if you use proper gcam made for your phone.
secondly, config file can be loaded in settings of most gcam. you can use youtube or any tutorial to see how to load configs.

Thanks for your reply, Bhanu. It was my understanding that what Gcam does, mostly, is to apply some sort of software "magic" to what the sensors record, and in this respect, the 48MP main sensor on the Note 9S isn't too shabby, so I'd really like to give it a try, but as I said in my OP, every time I did what was advised in the tutorials I read, i.e. press somewhere in the camera interface (left of the capture button), I always got the same "no config file to load" message, although I had a config file waiting to be installed, one that I had downloaded along with the Gcam .apk file, so I was wondering if there were APKs that already contained said config file, and if so, where can I find them?
For example, this article points at two different builds based on Gcam 8, but it doesn't mention where to find the config file that goes with either one of them.

hi, i like the way you replied,
about gcam i have found v7.4 its recommended to use v7 because they are relatively stable.

just open app and go to settings and developer settings and disable use google photo to use it.
or simply install google photos to make this version work.

GLOBAL USERS, LATEST NEWS: WORKING GCAM3 with FRONT CAM and TIME LAPSE!
This thread was created to achieve, at first, two goals:
Organize useful information on the main topic about GCAM for GL/CN users and CONSTANTLY UPDATE IT;
Direct new users to a "solution" regarding GCAM on Global/China variants;
MY SPECS:
Phone: Redmi Note 5 Pro 64GB/4GB (CN and came with GLOBAL ROM installed)
ROM: Havoc Mod ROM (Android 9.0/Pie)
Understand the "problem" between the Indian vs Global/CN variants:
Indian variant uses Sony sensors on both front and rear cameras. So modders didn't had too much trouble porting GCAM for them;
GLOBAL/CN variants have the Samsung S5K2L7 sensor (same sensor used in RN6 Pro) on the rear, and on the front camera we have a Omnivision sensor (here lies the problem).
Know that: THERE'S NO WAY OF MAKING GCAM WORK ON ANDROID PIE WITHOUT A PATCH!
MAGISK METHOD NOTE:
UPDATE: There might be a light for your, warrior!
As gracefully explained by our fellow Desmanto, there are some steps you can take in order to make the Magisk modules work.
If it helps you on your lonely journey, please hit the Thanks button on his response. I'll only link his explanation.
I noticed that installing a PATCH through it isn't a guarantee of success.
Even when I installed AdAway on my phone, magisk took a while to finally grant root access to it... So it means it's a shot in the dark.
Once I was able to install the RN5 Camera Patch v1.035a(Pie 9.0).zip by nhappyman and make it properly work. But only once!
As pointed out by the user misiek735:
"If you install everything and you choose 4k with eis enabled in gcam 5.1 settings
and it does not work (camera error) then it means that patch is not working
at all and you make somewhere during the instalation proces a mistake."Since the process of installing the patch, rebooting, checking if the patch was installed successfully, removing it, rebooting, installing again...
isn't as pretty as I'd like, I advise you all to take the TWRP route.
TWRP ROUTE: THE LIGHT AT THE END OF THE ROAD:
Right, this is where the fun begins!
First of all, my rig consists of two GCAM:
Pixel 3 (For anything related to rear camera: Normal, Portrait, Nightsight and SlowMo) - MGC_6.1.021_BSG_Arnova-based_v.1.3d_TInNeun_2
Pixel 2 (Front Camera; Front Portrait Mode) - GoogleCamera-5.1.018.177624777-Urnyx05Mod
Patch used: RN5 Camera Patch TWRP v1.035a (Pie_9.0).zip (Reading through threads, I've came to the conclusion this one is guaranteed to work. New versions are out there to be tested. Please share your results)
With these guys I can do pretty everything* (passing the "misiek735 test" pointed out earlier):
SlowMo: [email protected] or [email protected]
Front/Rear Camera Portrait
Front/Rear Live Motion
Rear Camera video: [email protected], [email protected]

DOWNLOAD:
- Fantastic mods/patch, but... Where to find them?
At the moment, I'm going to point out the direction (since I'm not aware if I hold any rights to upload myself those files)

UPDATE: 2019/04/30
LATEST NEWS: WE HAVE A WORKING GCAM3!
Yesterday was release a brand new version for us GLOBAL users! It's a GCAM3 (Pixel 3 Camera App) with a working front camera!
Search for the APK on the Telegram Group gcamWhyred!
Look for:
Gcam 6.2.024 Advanced V2.1.beta._190429.1903.apk
In order to make the front camera work and use a lag-free app, you must use these settings presented on the attachments!
Or click here and check my shared Google Photos gallery.
Note:
I'm currently using the TWRP v1.035a patch
There's a new version called RN5 Camera Patch v2.034a that might fix the issues I'm going to talk about next, but I didn't test it yet (please, you can provide feedback here if you will), so bear with me.
Known Issues (So far):
If you zoom (use the digital zoom prior to the shot), it'll FC the app and a low resolution (probably the image in the buffer) will be saved in your gallery. (Zoomed shots on the front camera work!) Just set "Using Sabre" OFF and will be good to go! (From what I've understood this an algorithm to enhance zoomed pictures)
Occurred to me once, but you might get an black picture every now and never.
While recording something the "viewfinder" might show a worst image than the one which is actually being recorded.
Night Sight is laggy! It'll work as intended but you'll experience it's 1/3s shutter speed. Seems like it's already collecting data about the scenario prior to the shot.
UPDATE: 2019/05/14
Latest News: We have a working GCAM v6.2.030 (i.e. Time Lapse capable)
Today was shared on gcamWhyred telegram group a GCAM3 with the new time lapse.
Look for:
Gcam_6.2.030_Advanced_V2.1beta6.190512.1059.apk - Link for those who avoids Telegram (not posted by me)
In order to make the front camera work and use a lag-free app, you must:
Enable advanced mode.
Use these settings for the front camera and disable Sabre (also use RAW10 on RAW format, if I'm not wrong this will remove the lag on the rear camera).
The "Disabled Google Photo" actually sets it as default gallery (probably a bug)
In advanced settings, if you try to use the dark theme, it won't work. (Again, there's a reason why it still called "beta")

A small correction here. The Global/CN variant (RN5 AI) doesn't have Sony IMX486 sensor on the rear camera. Instead, it sports Samsung S5K2L7 sensor (same sensor used in RN6 Pro) with effective pixel size of 1.4 μm.

Hm... That's odd, I've just tested with my boss and the WhatsApp Video Call was good enough. I don't know if it was supposed to have less delay (though, to me, was acceptable), but unfortunately I'm not aware of any fixes.

Yes! I'm pretty sure that dirty flashing the same ROM (and version) will bring everything back to what it was.

No, I'm on Havoc OS Mod.
Is PE camera2api enabled by default? Check with the developer? Maybe?
Let me ask you something else: Why did you end up on PE? I went through the RN5 forum before buying my phone, and even though PE looked fancy and awesome, HavocOS seemed to provide more customization.

Oh i see now why at havoc the whatsapp bug does not occur, i looked at their changelog, one line caught my eye.. its the "Force HAL1 package in some app", i think that may be the case, the devs of Havoc is aware of this bug i think, so whatsapp must be one of the app that being forced to use HAL1. (HAL3 is camera2api right?)
Hmmm, its more like personal taste i think I kinda like a minimal rom with minimal costumization.. and PE is the one for me, it really gives me the taste of Pixel phone
Have anyone tried a TWRP patch newer than version 1.035a?
If so, what's new? Any changelogs?

Advantages of EU/Global over Chinese ROM

tldr:
What are the advantages of installing the EU ROM over just keeping the Chinese ROM and customizing it? Are there any functions that stop working and/or change for the worse?
Hi everyone. Hopefully this post will be a helpful resource if someone else wonders this same question.
For a while I had my eye on the Mi Mix 3 and after reading all the reviews I just had to get it. I wanted one with 8 gigs of ram and 256 gigs of memory so I got the Chinese variant. After reading post after post on how to change the ROM to EU or Global I finally asked why? I mean, I got the phone and promptly loaded the Google Play Store and downloaded a bunch of apps. I changed the launcher to "Poco Launcer" from the GP Store since it's basically the same as MIUI but with an app drawer, so I'm cool with that. That beings said...
What are the advantages and drawbacks of installing the EU ROM (the one I kinda decided on between the two alternates)? The only two things that bother me about the Chinese ROM are
1) The default assistant is in Chinese and you can't change the AI button to open a different one, even though you can still install the others and use them by opening the app.
2) Some of the Apps in the "App vault" (Their little slide right home screen) and the tools when you open the slider are Chinese apps that I have no interest in using, but you can't change them. My solution to this was to turn off the app vault and to make the slider do nothing, which is okay I guess.
So basically, what would I gain by switching ROMs, and what pitfalls exist in those alternate ROMs which might make a person think twice about changing?
Why run MIUI at all?
Don't waste anymore time and just flash it already. it's better and I'm not wasting my time explaining why.

Because MIUI works. In your signature the top one is for the "Pixel Experience" and it's 90 pages of people complaining about features that don't work or are partially broken. The culmination is on the last page where it's revealed that it's not under development anymore followed by people complaining about functions that STILL DON'T WORK.

I don't mean to waste anyones time, and especially not my own. All I need to know is, will any of the features of my phone be problematic after I flash?
Also, does that link you provided require this "twrp" thing I've read about or is it fastboot? Is it the EU version?

You need twrp to install it

Everything works on the Chinese devices, other than being able to link an action to the slider. Most of the problems are to do with initial installation, but this is the way every rom thread ends up, people only post when they have problems.

Redmi 9a flashed with Treble GSI (stock android ROM) - just saying thanks

Hi everyone,
I've been away from the ROM scene for a few years and was pleasantly surprised to find out that even a MediaTek phone these days can be flashed with a ROM different from its original. With a lot of bumps and information from this thread and others, I was able to test the Lineage, Havoc, and Treble ROMs, flashing through adb commands on fastbootd on unsigned xiaomi drivers. The one with the best compatibility so far is an older ROM, the Treble 10 GSI bundled with go gapps. Treble 11, the latest, doesn't have a working "recent apps" button (multitasker/app switcher). I'm not using this phone as a camera phone, but I did install an older Gcam (Gcam 2.3, I think) by googling the phone's mediatek processor, Helio G25.
On stock android, I do feel like the phone is much improved from the MIUI OS's bloat. I feel that Xiaomi as of late is putting too much adware, a far cry from when I bought my first phone from them (A Redmi 1S).
I would like to thank everyone here for the recovery files, twrp, etc.
I'd love to know how you accomplished this, as an otherwise decent phone is, I feel, crippled by MIUI's ridiculous bloat.

Hi @Bludwurst ... I'll see if I can write something semi-coherent about it. Please give me a few days. But the general method was pretty similar to flashing other treble-based ROMs, the important thing is that the phone boots into FASTBOOTD ("elevated" fastboot) and the rom you're flashing is the correct architecture with some Google Go apps (if you want it to be easier to set up). They update every few weeks, so depending on the progress, it may even be feasible to try out the other more popular ROMs. Lineage was 2nd best in my experience, and Android 11 to boot with its own recovery, but it doesn't come bundled with Google Go apps, you'll have to flash the Google apps yourself.
Major caveat about the treble GSI i'm using though -- the Gcam with HDR on has a chance of shutting down (exiting). It's less of an issue when the setting is off. I do have a separate primary camera phone so that wasn't an issue to me.
I've had the phone for about 3 weeks now. I think the biggest difference between this ROM and the MIUI OS is that the MIUI OS is very aggressive about killing my VPN (Ad blocker) and other background apps. With this Treble GSI (Android 10, not 11), I won't claim that my mediatek phone suddenly became a snapdragon, but there's no unexpected app-killing, which is very important for Blokada to stay alive.
**Has any other app crapped out (crashed/exited) since I changed ROMs?**
I don't run games on this phone, so I can't say if there's a difference between MIUI and Treble, but most of the productivity stuff is running okay (time tracker, markdown editor, pdf viewer, etc.) there IS some slowdown when running mobile youtube on my browser (yes, i don't run the youtube app... there may be an improvement if you're using a dedicated app.
I bought this phone as my work tracker phone. Before, with the MIUI stuff, it would stutter after a few apps were loaded. This is improved, but under heavy loads (10+ tabs, video playing), the phone is likely to complain.
**How's the battery life**
I bought this phone for the battery life, so I'd say I'm pretty satisfied on that front. The difference between the MIUI and the Treble GSI.... there's some small improvement with the Treble GSI. But it is (after a few weeks of use) not as much of a "battery boost" as I initially thought. Maybe this is because MIUI keeps killing background apps that now stay on? Can't tell.
**Any other issues**
I had to fix brightness and I think the headphone bug. I still have the commands somewhere, I'll dig it up.
Next, I am not sure if this phone will get security issues moving forward, or if i'll have to keep reflashing to a later GSI. I haven't checked if there's a way to sideload kernel security patches.
**Worth it to switch?**
Yeah, absolutely. Not having to reload apps is a huge deal, and not losing working data while typing helps. Tradeoff is camera hdr and security.
This all sounds very interesting.
I've admittedly not kept up with the Android scene (to call it something), so I'm a bit lost regarding Treble ROMs and such; I'll try to catch up a bit.
Take your time, I can wait.
(It goes without saying that, should I not like the results, I can always bail and reinstall an official Xiaomi ROM for this device, no?)
Yes, MIUI is extremely aggressive killing apps, and getting it to stop is rather confusing (it's not enough to turn off battery optimizations... You need to dig into Settings).
I managed to stop it from killing Netguard, at least...
I also don't play games or otherwise make extremely heavy use of the phone; I also don't care much for camera apps, so such disadvantages aren't dealbreakers for me.
Thank you for your reply

You should use arm32_binder64-ab variants for this device, and you should flash an image that is THE SAME ANDROID VERSION you currently have or 1 version above. Example if you have Android 11, Flash Android 11R version, if you have Android 10 only flash ANDROID 10Q versions, etc.
To find out what GSI image should you use, this app makes it easier, it recommends you which one to download. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=tk.hack5.treblecheck&hl=&gl=US --

Question Working Gcam for the A53

Just picked up this phone, so far I like it, seems a bit laggy, but I'm looking for a working Gcam version. I found a few but one is a Go version and the 2nd I can only get video working. Any help would be appreciated
It's like 99% + a proper gcam will not work for this device. I don't own this device but have been looking if RAW is capable on this device at all with 3rd party apps. Apparently this is a NO. When RAW is not available at all, GCAM's core software does not work...which is HDR+ mode. It's really lame because the camera sensor , processor/processing and memory is more than adequate.
I think gcam is limited to what is already existed. I had hoped it could be a workaround on the RAW issue, it couldn't engage the cameras on mine.
Hey there people, a couple of weeks ago I've acquired an A53 because of it's camera capability, while researching I found out this phone doesn't have RAW format support, which is a shame acknowledging this phone can shoot up to 10 seconds of image! So I decided to get my hands dirty and mod the camera libraries and so a Google Camera for it. I might release the modules and the Google Camera by this Saturday. I'd be also doing a Q&A, and you're invited! (I'll be talking about my work over 64MP mode, spoiler alert, I've been able to expose the resolution size for 3rd party camera apps, but I decided I won't be release with the 64MP mode until I'm able to access 64MP mode without root.)
I'm eagerly waiting to show you all my W.I.P works and much more!
Attaching a video showing how GCam 8.4.300 behaves.
Hey there, I was able to make a stable GCam 8.4.300, refer to my XDA thread!
Interesting !
Sadly we have to Root the phone to use gcam
Thanks for your work, i'll follow tour project closely

No worries, for those who can't root or don't want to root I'll be doing my best to get working 64MP for 3rd party camera without root!

I'm not particularly interested by 64MP mode as I'm not impressed by the differences from a quality perspective (using Samsung app)
But I'm interested by a working version of gcam cause I don't like Samsung camera app and also the photo processing (far better when I disable the HDR mode)
So if your version of gcam can be installed without unlocking bootloader I'm in !
But if I understand correctly that's not possible currently ? Am I right ?
Thanks for your work !

Yes, sadly you can't use gcam without root, I saw Samsung's api has a RAW picture format so I have been tried these past weeks using Samsung's API RAW picture format instead of Android's, unfortunately no progress was achieved so far
That's very cool. Really looking forward to trying this out on my phone with LineageOS GSI and Magisk. There, the difference in quality to the default cam will be mindblowing I assume.

I don't think Gcam is ever going to work unless Samsung enables RAW support (or someone finds a way to enable it) on the A53.
How do I enable GCam if I have ROOT?
Considering this device through local carrier because it's one of few with expandable memory. They're also suggesting Motorola Edge.. I've been out of the loop on tech side of things for years now, so I naturally came here to learn what I can about them. Is A53 5G a solid choice?

Question Portrait mode processing takes decades

Hi Guys,
Hope you all doing well.
So, I purchased an unlocked Pixel 7 Pro and got it delivered yesterday.
All seems good except camera which is very, very disappointing so far (obviously, the phone has the latest updates)
For example, no matter what picture I take in portrait mode, it takes 1-1.5 minutes (!!) to process it to add the blur which is insane as my 2 years old Notes 10 Ultra processes blur in 1-2 seconds. How is this even possible?
Do you guys have the same issue with portrait mode? I want to make sure its not my phone.
Also, I was reading that it is possible to add a blur to unprocessed picture from Google Photos but that option is simply missing from the menu no matter what picture I open.
For instance, Samsung Gallery app does add blur to all these unprocessed pictures so its not the picture itself. Google Photos simply doesn't have that option, its missing.
Google Photos also doesn't have any option to unblur a picture as its also missing. The was apparently one of the "perks" of Pixel 7 Pro but that option is not even there.
Do you guys also experience all this?
If the portrait mode processing is faster for you, can any of you kindly extract your camera and google photo apk and post it here? I will install these instead. Thanks a lot!
Try a factory reset. mine takes 4 seconds tops
Didn't help.
I didn't mention that I am using GrapheneOS.
Tried to flash stock Google image - and Portrait mode processing worked as expected.
I pulled out the original Photo and Google Camera apks from stock Google image, then installed Graphene again and installed these - same results.
It seems there are some additional libraries in stock image that are responsible for processing and they need to be installed in Graphene to make it work as expected? I couldn't identify any though - there was one called Pixel Camera Services that I also installed but still no joy.

So you are running a ROM, and or modded your phone and wonder why things don't work? SMH

Good luck with that. Graphene is a poor choice for people who want to use Google anything.

GrapheneOS is an OS not a mod, and Google Camera works on it for a few years now - it only requires GSF to run. There are many people on XDA who are using GrapheneOS on Pixel phones so its not a unique thing. I was hoping someone who is on it can advise if they experience the same issues.

Graphene is a hugely modded OS with everything Google stripped from it. It is normal and expected for things to not work exactly the same as stock.

I agree, its a way out of Google so yes. I don't use any other Google aps so don't really need them. Such a shame the Cam is not working as expected - I might try GCAM instead.

So then it looks like I was correct in my assumption...according to other respondents? You are running a heavily modded OS with Google stripped out of it. Of course you will have all sorts of negative issues. lol

You should have mentioned first that you're NOT on the STOCK ROM before getting all "disappointed" about your phone.

Honestly, this topic is not about comparing phones - I own both and providing my feedback. Even with stock ROM, Pixel cannot match the capabilities of 2 years old Notes 20 Ultra - for example, Note 20 Ultra has real-time video background blur with different effects whilst Pixel's Cinematic mode doesn't offer many background effects and works much worse. Note 20 Ultra's portrait mode has much more different real-time effects, etc. But as I said this topic is not about comparing but trying to resolve a problem, so its pointless to write comments like this.
I took this one of my daughter just to see and mine did not have that problem. It processed quick quickly

It's pointless to write something is broken, and then ask people if theirs is broken too, while ignoring completely the fact that you're on a CUSTOM ROM while people are clearly saying "It's working" fine, yes, on stock ROM.
I'm not trying to argue now, but it's important to mention such stuff so people can actually "help" in a more "accurate" way instead of just writing "it works fine for me", while they're not using the same ROM as you do.
Peace

Please do your research before posting - Google Camera does work on GrapheneOS with Google Services installed.
If you know anything about the issue, then please respond.
If not, its pointless making comments like this and flooding the thread - let other people who are running Graphene to read and share their experience.

The issue you're having is not there in the stock ROM, something you didn't mention in your thread.
But I'll walk away because you're clearly ignoring the fact that you didn't mention here a KEY factor, because it's definitely the issue of your CUSTOM ROM and not stock ROM. So, don't get angry when you get responses like this.
