So P40 pro in 2021 how is it? - Huawei P40 Pro Questions & Answers

I had the P40 pro last year, really liked the hardware but ultimately grew tired of the faff to keep things working and notifications never really were 100%
Are things any different now or is it still as much hassle to get and keep working? I am kind of tempted again

Great phone, same issues to install GSM, but when you get it everything seems to work fine without errors. Even my bank applications are running now.

wonderful phone with great camaras display and battery, waiting for harmony os

I was totally ok with getting my apps elsewhere before and have no problem tinkering, it was notifications and google photos that bugged me in the end last time.

As you can see in my thread, I can't install a banking app. Other than that, with phone clone and the aurora app store, everything else is working (apart from uber, but you can make web shortcuts, which solves that problem).
Quality phone overall would recommend you to check if your banking apps work, or if you need a mobile version of them. Apart from that super satisfied.

My two complaints are apps from sites have fonts too small for me to read and how to get photos from phone to laptop quickly for editing.

Just bought this phone, it's very cheap compare to the early date it launched. I simply use gspace to enable some gms required apps. I found this very useful and gspace seems to work flawlessly. Now I ditch yg Vivo X50pro to use Huawei P40pro.

Hi i love my p40 pro the camera is excellent much better than i even thought it would be .but for me the problem has always been google .is there no way of getting it on my phone easily???

Just bought this phone last month, loves the Camera & Battery Life, only missing is Goolge (no way to downgrade though) using my 3+ years old oneplus5 as primary & p40pro as secondary device

Google Play Services Stops Working

Hello Helpful People,
Clearly we are a niche group who love our P8 Max. Wondering, does anyone else have the issue where Google Play Services stops working on their P8 Max? This has happened to me a fair bit and can only be resolved with a hard reset and reinstall. I now have rooted and removed some or most of the the bloatware, hoping this fixes it. Does anyone have any suggestions?
Michael
Hey michaeldanielbourke,
This has happened to me as well. Not sure what the cause is but I've done a few restores due to this issue. One thing I noticed is that when I launch Maps and it asks for my search history...if I say Yes, there is some process that happens that states that Google Play Services is no longer supported on my device.. Subsequent launches of the Play Store causes an open and close and I can't get it to launch. I also noticed that my Google account was automatically removed from Accounts in Settings. So far I've avoided this by not implementing Maps search history, but I'm not really sure what the root cause is.
If anyone has any other feedback please post. There's definitely some quirkyness with this device, but I guess that's expected with an imported device. Overall I'm really happy with it and prefer it over my Note 4. My Note seems like a toy compared to this ...but I keep my Note 4 around because it takes great pictures and video which I do a lot of.

Interesting. Well I rooted my phone (finally) and removed the bloatware and the Huawei account information. So, hopefully this should work. Shall update
Is your phone rooted?
Michael
Yeah I was rooted, but it was happening when I wasn't rooted. Before I rooted I took a nandroid backup, so right now I'm running with TWRP with no root.
12/2/15:
Just wanted to update this thread. I continued to have issues with my Google account. For some reason it would remove itself for no apparent reason, other than a conflict (I think) with the Huawei ID or Cloud ID that is built-into the phone. I seemed to have solved this by removing or freezing all of the installed Huawei services and apps (with root). I'm curious if other folks have had this issue as well.
With root and all of the Huawei apps frozen, the phone is really running well. The only downside for me is the camera image quality. It's not bad, but I'm kinda picky about family photos I take.
I still can't get over how my Note 4 looks like a toy compared to this phone. I hope Huawei continues to crank our larger format phones. 6.8" may seem big to many folks, but I think it works well.

What to do now?

Now it's official, no Google blessings!
They killed it before its even born!
The best smartphone any Geek could ever dream of.
6.5 inch horizon screen with better screen to body ratio and smaller notch
Kirin 990 with 5G 7nm processor
4500 mah battery
27w wireless charging with 3 times faster reverse wireless charging
Improved camera sensor
Better in display fingerprint sensor
Better UI
etc...
Tthey promise a stable huawei mobile services platform and a rich app store database, but can it replace Google play services (play store, maps, youtube, drive, etc...)
Even if we can add Google play services, will it be continuously getting updates? Will it be secure? Can it be allowed to add it in the 1st place?
Why kill a great company with leading technologies and limitless potentials?
I am a Huawei flagship user since the Porsche design mate 9 passing through all the great phones Huawei created and ending with the Mate 20 Pro 8gb 256gb international version. No way I'm going back to Samsung. The Note 10 plus can't be compared to the legendary Mate 30 pro!!!!
I'm in shock, I feel I'm in a nightmare and I need to wake up and find it's over soon!
Searching Huawei's App gallery on my Honor view 20, there are lots of YouTube clients. There is web browser access of course. For other apps like maps, we just extract the apk from an old phone and fire it over to the new mate 30. Just means a manual process every now and than. I'm not sure if the lack play services will cause issues? Just think how great the battery life would be without Play Services! Also, we won't have google listening to our every words and then serving up ads all the time.
Same here ... We need to know will we be able to install the play store and google apps .... ?????? This is the important question .
Or when u buy the phone will it transfer all your apps in the 1st sync between 2 phones ?
Is it possible that we can just create a custom rom with all the google services?

It isn't ideal but you could install Aurora Droid if you cannot install the Google Play store.
As for transferring all your apps. I would assume not That seems to be a Google service when you setup your phone with your Google account. Unless they provide a service like that which can read apps and settings from the previous phone.
Another good thing to note besides just installing the Google Play Store is that you need Google Play Services for some apps. Things like Netflix won't play in HD, WhatsApp won't be able to back-up your data to Google Drive, and Snapchat won't work either. You might be able to circumvent those problems with the microG Project though. But I believe that that is still in an early stage of development.
In a follow-up interview with Richard Yu clarified one important question in regards to how users will have control over the software they’ll be able to install on the Mate 30 and Mate 30 Pro;
and he also confirmed that users will be able to unlock the bootloaders for the Mate 30 and 30 Pro.

i don't speak Italian but google apps are installed at 5:15. Maps and youtube are shown shortly after that. Play store is also shown being installed. Getting this phone when it's available.
Is the unavailability of GApps permanent ?

I was wondering the same thing. In the olden times- phone with unlocked bootloader allowed us to customize phone to the teeth- Performance and battery longevity both improved. Shouldn't that be the case here?'
RE-sale would suffer

I think the same way as you. The first thing that crossed my mind when Richard Yu said that's not going to be any GMS was that battery life would be freaking awesome. GMS like play services has a really high battery consumption. If I get the Mate 30 Pro, I would just sideload YouTube and Gmail. I don't really need other Google services.
I think this was a dreadful way of handling competition with Huawei.
They outran everyone and so - you treat them like terrorists and run them out of the market.
It's transparent and anti-capitalist and I'm going to buy the phone and I hope that China keeps going.
It's left a bitter taste in my mouth for everything American.
For the time being I'm just going to short-cut from my browsers to gmail etc
I don't need the apps
And side-load when this becomes possible.
I don't like to see people beat down good competition.
I'm behind Huawei all the way - I don't think anyone will ever trust America again - I wish them luck with Harmony OS and in the long term, I wish China's tech, every success.
Let's see.
Onward.
First message on xda-developer since, well, when I actually used the XDA II!
I am not moving away from Android and if I can, Huawei (Mate 7,8,9P,10P,20P, P20P, P30P). Am now looking at prove that GMS can be installed on the M30P and I will upgrade, if not, I'm sorry Huawei.
Are we still on XDA-Developers ? People could boot 3 OS's on the HTC HD2 !
Installing Google Services on the Mate30 is really easy...
Just look at any Meizu or Xiaomi china phone and see how easy it is to get it to run the full Google services, heck, flashing Gapps after Flashing any ROM avaiable on here should already be 2nd nature to most of us !
I agree. Sideload Google services is very easy. Just flash a gapps package and you're done. If you just want YouTube and G-Mail, just flash these two apps
Hope we can easily sideload all Google stuff.
I don't see any phone worth buying outside of M30P or maybe M30X in the future
I have a Mate 20 Pro and it's an amazing phone, I'd like to buy a Mate 30 Pro and I have zero problems with side-loading apps and unlocking bootloaders etc.
The only question I have is, is it possible after side loading the apps for Google restrict them remotely?
Sorry if this is well known, I've been out of the ROM / app flashing game for a while.... back in my HD2 days it was a new ROM every week and great fun
GMS will be like installing on a chinese SKU'd phone, but the issue as a daily driver will be things like widevide, saftey net, bank apps, etc... not to mention having to root for things like aptx codecs etc. It will also remain to be seen if push notifications via gcm will be ok as well, or FCM i think is what the push api is called now.
Netflix, Spotify, most decent banking apps, might be b0rked. Really a shame since this hardware is leagues ahead right now. Pixel 4 xl is looking to be a disappointment comparatively, and note 10 was just 10++ basically.

Yes, am very keen to see if banking apps will work.
SafetyNet WILL be broken by unlocking the bootloader. It's a given. Sadly this means no Netflix, no banking apps, no Snapchat (can cope without that one) etc. To me that's fine - I never watch netflix on my phone and banking I always access from a browser. For a phone the major things, for me, are battery life and the camera. I'll be getting this and hoping I can sideload stuff later.

What's it like to live with day to day?

I currently have an S20 Ultra that I am very close to returning while I still can (Exynos and camera) I have wanted the P40 pro (or Mate 30 pro) ever since they were announced but just wrote them off due to the lack of Google.
The thing is though I'd be totally ok with a lot about life without Google, I use a 3rd party email app, I could easily switch my contacts and calendar back to iCloud and rarely watch netflix on my phone. So then it just comes down to the no google pay and the potential faff to work around not having Google Photos.
My question is for those that have it how are finding it day to day? Are the limitations a frustration too far or does it work for you?

If you can live with some compromises, then it's an amazing phone. The Camera is phenomenal, the battery life is great, and apps and games run super smooth.
Getting GMS up and working is a straight forward process, but be prepared to do it a few times to get it right (it took me about 6 attempts to get it fully working with no notifications and app errors etc) and follow the steps precisely. Obviously, it's still not going to be as smooth a Googley and app experience as your Samsung, missing G-Pay, G-Music and a few others may or may not be crucial to you. Plus many apps won’t give notifications - but I don't mind this so much it's quite nice not having random notifications all day and only getting them when i open the app and actually want to see - I predominantly use Whatsapp and notifications work fine here.
I did try a few days without Google services, but the App Gallery really is terrible. It might have 45000 apps, but 44950 are awful. Downloading apps from elsewhere works, but many apps crash with a 'No google services' type error. So, for me the compromise of having some stuff work with GMS is the better option and the rest of the phone makes it worthwhile.
Thanks, how would you feel if sideloading GPS was not possible? Strikes me that that would have to be my assumption going in as whatever loophole allows it could get closed at any time.

Personally I only installed GMS out of the "urge" to tinker with my phone. I love that stuff. But honestly, I wouldn't mind not having Google services on my phone, there are enough alternatives on the Huawei App Gallery. For me, at least. Everyone is different. Check out some of the posts on here or reddit where people list some good Google apps alternatives. Like
Gmail = Bluemail or Aquamail.
Google Maps = Here WeGo or Maps.me
etc.
And you're right about the loophole possibly getting closed. That's why I wouldn't recommend this phone to people who are heavily dependent on Gapps. But if you can live without them, then just buy it! It's a great phone and I'm very satisfied with it, so far.

I think that it would still be a great phone, I'm sure i could cope with downloading APKs using ApkPure etc, but it would be less attractive. Really hoping the workarounds still work when the Pro+ version arrives!
On a side note, i said on the above post that it took many attempts to get GMS fully working with no errors. Yesterday evening I had a meltdown and accidentally removed my Google account and it was not possible to re-add it, so i backed up my stuff and reset the phone. I followed the steps from Swag Sell's 7th May video on YouTube (using the same files as always) and it worked first time with no errors and took about 20 minutes, I think as people refine the processes and steps it gets more accurate.
On the google side it is only really google photos that would bug me as I use that, I could live without google pay. Email would not be a problem, other than that it would just be not getting notifications for other apps. I actually think there are some plus points of being google free!
I am really tempted as the camera on the S20 Ultra is just a let-down (the hardware is there but I have no confidence Samsung will get the software right) I really liked the P30 pro and am actually considering getting another but the P40 pro just looks like a really good device.
I like my P40 Pro a lot but I'm waiting for improvements in the camera department.
The phone is fast, stable, looks great, feels great and has good battery life.
I don't really trust my privacy in the hands of big US tech companies, so it's nice to break free from Google. The only Google apps I sideloaded are YouTube Vanced and Google Maps. I tried other GPS applications but unfortunately none really lived up to GMaps, even Waze. So I'm using GMaps without GMS which means no saved/starred places etc, but that's ok with me. As an alternative, I'm saving my search history locally on the device and I created home screen shortcuts (GMap widget) for addresses that I want to "save".

Really? Camera would be the main driver for me getting this phone.
I assume banking apps are a no no too?
I think I am going to give the P40 Pro a try, Amazon have a pretty good deal including the watch, do have one final question..
For those who have managed to install GPS how safe do you feel? i.e. if you were able to get your banking apps working or PayPal would you be happy using them? Only ask as the method obviously involves installing stuff from unknown sources.
I am on the fence of accepting I will not get my banking apps or google photos and going the app clone, app gallery route and finding a workaround for photos.

The current camera app doesn't unleash the camera's full potential.
Some banking apps work, others don't, there's no hard rule.
Bit disappointed so far ... I have not installed any GMS mods .. just cloned some apps and installed from apkpure, amazon app store, etc.
1. call earspeaker volume is low
2. call speaker volume is low
3. no AOD weather & music controls
4. notifications missing for most side-loaded apps (whatsapp ok, skype + others are a fail)
5. notifications disappear after unlocking (usual huawei thing)
6. amazon photos app crashes
7. gestural nav quick app switcher is supported with an option but doesnt seem to work.
That's about it for now.
(4) is critical .. the others I can probably overlook for a while.
Ok I pulled the trigger and it arrived today. So far I have just used phone clone, app gallery and Amazon/APKPure, early days but so far it feels quite seamless.
Not had a chance to form an opinion on how good the phone is overall other than it feels really nice in the hand but my experience/observations in terms of what is working and not so far are as follows:
- All of my non-google apps transfered over just fine other than Uber and eBay
- Installed eBay from apkpure but it does not work.
- Lastpass works fine with none of the errors or pop-ups I have seen mentioned elsewhere
- My First Direct Banking app also works fine and appears so far as normal as does PayPal
- Newton Mail, gives a GPS error but does work ok, no notifications though. May have to go back to Nine or try another app
- Nova Launcher works ok and Nova Prime app also transfered over. Nova Google companion does not seem to work though
Early days and some of the above could change and go wrong but so far I am not feeling the temptation to install GPS.
Google Photos yuo can use in browser. Full functionality with Google account. Also almost all other things are usable in browser or you can download app via Apk Pure... for example. The camera with the latest update ... . 121 is super. And I had for a few days Note 10 and also S20 but battery life was terrible. And the camera here is simply the best, and so so smooth and fast user experience.
Update Amazon photos crashes constantly, not a fan of the browser route as it feels quite clunky so am going to try piktures.
Surely the lack of notifications is an issue for you?
WhatsApp notifications work just fine as does obviously SMS.
Still looking for email, outlook seems hit and miss but notifications are coming through on it. I have used nine before but obviously no way of carrying through my purchase.
I think the key is identifying apps that do not reply on GPS to work.
I am going to persevere a bit before trying to install GPS, only because it looks a faff and is also not a one-of job. I’ll see how I feel after a few days. WhatsApp, email and sms are the must haves, the others can follow hopefully.
The camera is very very good, tested it briefly against my ultra and indoors it is just no contest. I’m sure outside in good light it is a personal preference thing but in mid to low light so far it seems streets ahead.

yes .. it's close to being acceptable for me with whatsapp working ... really just skype is the problem for my must haves .. the others are not so critical ... i can use calendars etc from HAG.
such a hassle to go back to google services just for skype.
Can you continue to use your game progress saved with Google Play? I refuse to use Facebook to save my progress, so Play is the only way I can keep my progress.

P40 or P30

hello guys
Im planning to buy a new phone, but im stuck comparing between the P40 pro and P30 pro NE , as ive ssen a lot of people complaining about the google service and how big of hastel to sideload them and all. and also even after side loading them there seems some people who are still complaining that they do not work very well or at least not as they soppus to,
well my greatest concern is the Google map which i like the most , ive tryed maps me for a while but it didnt do the whole trick it missed some informations i think, and also my concern is after i side loade GSM would the probplem appear again after whije , perhaps after an update or somthing
sorry for my bad english
There are a lot of ways to install GMS, when it works it will work 90% it will miss some things like Google pay and notifications the notifications can work via icebox or freezing Google Play framework, however this will mess with GPS at the moment.
I have mine setup without notifications and it works good. You can also try Here Maps if you dont need GMS for other things.
Also the P30 Pro NE is not a good buy the normal P30 Pro is cheaper and only misses some color options and and has a base model with 128gb.
If i had to choose again i would opt for the P40 Pro again the minor hassle has a better overal phone and gave me the chance to go with some alternatives instead of Google services for everything.

are you saying if i go for the P30 pro 2019 is better because of the price , and also would the 128gb make diffrence or thats something will not hinder the experience
Exactly that for me it is P30 Pro NE > P30 Pro (Better price) > P40 Pro
For me 128gb is enough, i use Google Photos and my pictures are in the cloud. For music i use Tidal. So basically i do not need so much. But you have to see for yourself if that would be enough

I was in a similar position about a month ago, but what you can do in advance of commiting to a handset is try out the alternatives on your current devices, I use the recommended one by Huawei which is here we go, and you know what its super clean and really well formatted. Ive not really missed GMS as HMS is offering everything quite rapidly
If you want to use Google accounts, then forget the P40 .. you can read the threads here and it is still a problem.
If you want to de-Google your life a bit, and your apps work ok on the P40 Pro, then you can get a few DXOMARK points and buy the P40 Pro.
Plenty of map alternatives work fine without GMS install. I am using HMS+microG install (so no GMS) ....
a) HereWeGo
b) Waze
c) Google Go Maps
d) Google Maps works fine but no login

Limitations of p40 *with* gms

Hi all,
I'm looking to change from my P30 Pro - love the phone, but I dropped my belt on the screen [emoji22] and they're expensive to fix. Insurance paid me out luckily, debating whether I buy a P40 as they're really cheap now, or get the P30 Pro fixed.
The P30 Pro main camera gives weird yellow hues especially when capturing in raw and I'm hopeful the p40 is improved. Plus I think the 5x zoom is a gimmick, 2x or 3x is more usable in my view.
I'm wondering what the real limitations of daily use with a P40 is if you've loaded gms onto it.
- Can you update apps automatically from the play store?
- Does uber work once you have gms loaded?
- Does Netflix play in HD? (not so fussed about hdr)
- Do you have to re-apply gms fixes regularly or is that only needed when there's a Huawei firmware update?
- Does chromecast work?
I've read a bunch of forums but still not totally clear on what the current state is.
Thanks all, appreciate any advice!

We do need a custom firmware, otherwise forget about it, you may install some apps but you will always find bugs on apps that wont coop that great with some stuff that google have and needs adaptation to run on huawei phones, it really sucks we are doomed, the smartphones are extremely fast, the fastest i ever had, although, i was not able to use netflix, tinder and some others without serious bugs, our only hope is a custom firmware for the p40 family.
Thanks for the reply!

I've had a P30 pro but I returned it because of the size and the dim screen. Got a P40 and could not be happier. All apps work except netflix, no need to reapply anything, updates are automatic.
Considering the fact that in stock version there are no Google services at all, you need to find yourself using Huawei´s App Gallery. Some basic apps like Whatsapp etc are available through it. In other cases it refers to "PetalSearch" which directs you to (somewhat shady) apk-sites. Even if you get another store running on it like F-Droid or APKpure, some apps may be found and installed, but running them usually comes with notifications about missing google services, hence the app would not work properly, or at all...
I got this phone for the same reason (price & performance). Unfortunately due to the lack of integration and usuability, i am deemed to wait for a better image to put on the phone.
(I came across "OpenKirin"-Project and they seem to be active in XDA as well. Hope they´re able to look into this)

Auto-updating apps from Google Play doesn't work, yes, but apps being broken - not really, at least from everything I've seen the only issue is notifications (on my side, Skype, Discord, Duo Authenticator, GMail's own app** and a banking app) however the apps themselves still work. What most people use works just fine without Google's stuff, though getting APKpure store is a good recommendation, that will cover pretty much everything (that is free) and missing in AppGallery.
Tinder definitely works fine from what I've seen, Netflix doesn't work at all due to some API/DRM certification stuff.
