Hi guys,
Getting really frustrated here!!
Have owned a Huawei Mate 20 for awhile now and recently wanted to do a backup & restore.
Made sure I backed up via Google Backup and verified on Google Drive.
Went to restore this morning and it says: NO BACKUPS FOUND. When I go into my Google Drive, I can literally SEE THE BACKUP THERE WITH ALL MY APPS.
Is there anyway to:
Force Google to restore this backup
Download this backup from Google Drive so it doesn't expire
Get this damn thing to work?!
Thanks guys, really appreciate it!
Try running bmgr in ADB commandline, from there you should be able to force restore Drive backups.

Thanks shampow.
Do you have any more information here? Assuming I have to use: bmgr restore TOKEN PACKAGE, but I have no idea how to do that.
Thank you.

I haven't done it in a while so I don't remember exactly, basically you do:
adb shell
bmgr
After this you will get the commands list, one of them is list of the backups available, and other is restore.
Found a guide - thank you.
After a factory reset, and running the bmgr list sets command, it will only show the backup made since the factory reset.
If I check on Google Drive it has both backups:
This device:
Current backup since factory reset
Other backups:
Original backup
Once clicking on this backup it says: "This backup will expire in__ days if the device remains inactive.
Why does it think it's a different device? Could there be a problem with the software versions? Both should be Android 10.
Thanks again shampow.
Android backups always been a mess. The Drive backup I know that can't really be downloaded or extracted and is set to expire.
The only two things I can't think of right now, even if sound silly, is factoryreset and set account again and see what happens when the backup prompt comes.
Else maybe is less hassle to start all over again.

Yes, I've tried a couple of times factory resetting in hopes it would change the outcome.
Originally the was a problem with security which lead to Google locking me. From my account for about a month - their Account Recovery procedure is a God damn joke - and ZERO staff who you can/ask, because "covid".
So I finally got my account back after thinking that was gone forever and now the backup doesn't work. So frustrating!
Now, when resetting my account security is there a chance it could have 'unlinked' my phone and that's saying it's another device?
The only other thing is the version. The backup was from Dec 19 and there looks like there was an update on the first of Jan. Could the version difference chance anything?

Ok so I have a weird problem that I could not find a solution googling for a few hours. I got a nexus 5 back in February. According to "My Devices" on the google play store site it was registered on Feb 25th and shows last used on Feb 27th. I have noticed that I couldn't remotely install apps from the site but haven't tried to trouble shoot it until now. Also the android device manager does not work. I am rooted but using the stock ROM. I've been using the phone itself with no problems. I get app updates, use the google+ picture auto backup and other services on the phone. The only problem seems to be that I am not linked to the google play website with the nexus 5. Anyone seen or heard anything like this?
I tried this below but it didn't work:
Open Google Settings from your device's apps menu.
Touch Android Device Manager.
Uncheck Allow remote factory reset.
Go to your device's main Settings menu, then touch Apps > All < Google Play services.
Touch Clear Data. Note that this action doesn't remove personal data.
Go back to Google Settings and select Allow remote factory reset.
Restart your device.
you might have to unselect remote factory reset to clear data in Google play services. After clear data the go back in select it again, reboot you should be good to go.

Every time it unlinked for me I just installed an App from the Play Store on my Nexus 5, and it would link again and I could install remotely through the Desktop website.
Hmmm I wish that were the case. I just installed an app yesterday after the remote link didn't work and I have tried again since. I've also removed my google account and added it back. Looks like a factory reset is in my future. Some things I've done that may have affected it:
Restore apps (not system) from titanium backup
Installed Xposed
Use of OpenVPN

Titanium Backup and Xposed should not affect it. OpenVPN, I'm not sure about, but I HIGHLY doubt it would be the cause. Try removing your Google account from Settings and setting it up again.

Titanium Backup WILL affect it - when you first loaded it on it would have asked you if you wanted to restore the device ID.
Open Titanium, press menu, chose the Manage Android ID, and restore your original ID. Then hit Market Update Helper, that will rebuild the market links.
Edit: Actually, maybe you don't want to restore - where did the original backup come from? Was it a Nexus 5? Maybe you already did restore the original, and it was from a different device??

Yeah I moved non system apps from a CM10 GS3. I thought about the Android ID as well. I generated a new one yesterday just to see if it fixed my problem. No luck. I am going to factory reset tonight. I'll post the results soon after I get everything up and running and confirm. Thanks for the suggestions.

Try re-building the market links through Tibu first.. might work?
Factory reset worked. I wish I knew what happened. I did a combination restore of my apps via the nexus 5 toolkit and titanium backup. The toolkit didn't get them all. I have not tried Xposed again. I may wait a bit and see if that was the cause.

Highly doubt Xposed would cause since I've been using it for a long time. As previously said, it was probably Titanium Backup messing with your ID.
I am trying to restore files back to my reset OnePlus One using "adb restore <file>" but while the restore happens without error, some files/folders are not restored. I have checked the backup file and the files and folders are present in the backup file, yet adb restore does not restore them
My backup is created with this command:
adb backup -f backup.ab -apk -obb -shared -all -system
And I try to restore with this:
adb restore backup.ab
Especially in the /sdcard/Android/data are a lot of files and folders missing and apps are not getting restored to their working state.
How do I restore the backup properly? Do I have to push every single file/folder to the phone manually?
Never mind. I just noticed that the backup files did not care to backup the /sdcard/Android folder and I have lost all files.
Why is it so impossible to make a proper backup on Android?
I am so close to ditching android just because I cannot get a working backup/restore to work!
And no, my phone is not rooted as rooting erases my files. Chicken and egg problem. I really hate android here.
"adb restore" didn't restore any of my accounts! I am so very pissed about android right now. Such a "mature" platform and no working backup/restore.
Plenty of tools offering to make backup/restore, but the all require me to erase all data (root) making the backup moot. And those tools that do not require root cannot backup anything besides what "adb backup" offers to back up (which is more miss than hit).
I am really envious of Apple users here. They have perfect (so it seems) working backup and restore.
... and I cannot add the missing accounts because they are already created. So, none of my accounts were restored and even though all accounts are actually there, none of them can synchronize as they are not there.
And all this trouble just to fix non-working MMS which turned out not to work after a reset anyway. I hate really hate android. So f...... unreliable.
I seriously cannot recommend anyone to use adb backup/restore. This will totally mess up your phone. Copy files manually and write down all your accounts (type/username/password/all settings) create them manually afterwards. "adb restore" cannot restore accounts.
If everything is lost at this point might as well root now and use titanium backup or parcel in the future? Not sure if parcel can backup accounts, titanium backup can though

Why didn't you just connect to your PC and copy your files across? Or at least research the phone before you bought it or started using it? If you unlock the bootloader when you receive the device the wiping that occurs during the unlocking process is a non-event.
There's no reason to "hate Android" because of this situation. There are several ways to make backups on an Android device, you just failed to unlock your device at the correct time. Just trying to put it into perspective a bit here.

I cannot copy everything to my pc. Accounts for instance cannot be copied. Same with system settings, Wi-Fi passwords and some apps do not survive the adb backup/restore (like Waze that enters a crash loop) and other apps just vanish. This system is not user friendly. There is no way I could make anyone I know accept this phone if they knew they couldn't back it up. They know nothing about rooting but they will not accept a non-working backup.
I at least tried (hard) to make a backup and restored it back and that was a horrible experience. I cannot help wondering why Google hasn't arranged android to have working backups. Apple has it and it seems near perfect compared to android.

Google does have backups, in the settings menu. Most of the system settings are backed up (and even if they weren't it should only take a total of ten mins to set them up again). Apps are backed up and downloaded again on a fresh install. It all works perfectly if you know what you're doing.

Except I have apps that are not on Google Play. I cannot backup my Wi-Fi passwords and am forced to let Google keep a copy. And there are so many settings that 10 minutes is far from enough to find them all and fix them. And the point is, I shouldn't have to. I should be able to make a backup, preferably compartmentalized, and restore the sections I want, if not all. And it should be 1 tool.
Also, following a reset, the phone will begin reinstalling apps from Google Play and what happens if I begin adb restore at the same time? I didn't want to find out and let it install. But when some games use 1.5GB of storage, that takes a long time. Would be much faster if I knew I could use adb restore.
Oh well, I will have to accept the horrible backup/restore solution for this phone, but I really am envious of the backup/restore for iOS devices.
Hi guys.
Sorry in advance in case of double thread, I looked around but didn't find anything similar.
Recently my Nexus 5 sends me this daily alert: "backup failed. It's been 3 days since last backup". If I click on this notice, it sends me to the backup settings page, and starts a new backup attempt that freezes at the very first step.
Every setting seems correct to me, and I'm at my wit's end.
I am waiting for a new device, so it would be great updating my data backup, so I could restore everything in my new phone simply by logging with my Google account.
I can send screenshots, but they're in Italian.
Can anyone help me?
Thank you all.
take Titanium backup always works. 1st try Syncing the account like app data and stuff then manually backup!
Thanx for your suggestion. I should root the device in order to use Titanium, right?
Anyway, I woud like to undertsand what's wrong in Google backup anyway, if anyone else can help.

I had to factory reset my phone but when I went to install whatsapp it asked me a password to restore my backups but for some reason I can't get it right, after a bunch of tries (and having to wait 12 hours) it told me that if I get it wrong one more time the backups will be deleted.
So I used this script https://github.com/sidharthv96/WhatsApp-GD-Extractor-Multithread to download my backup, which is now safely sitting on my PC in crypt15 format.
Now what can I do to try and get this database decrypted? I don't have the original key and my phone is not rooted, is there ANYTHING at all I could do?
The most ideal way would be a way to try all the passwords I can think of until I manage to decrypt it, if I try one more time the original backup will be deleted and I'd need to figure out how to upload it again but I don't even know if it can be done

Greetings, similar situation, my WhatsApp, for some reason failed and asked me to restore from a backup, to which I proceeded to restore, then a message popped up indicating that something went wrong and that the restore could not be done and my WhatsApp started In zero conversations, I've run out of years of messages. Searching I found that I could uninstall and reinstall to force the restoration again, I did it, when the time comes to reactivate, I receive the SMS and the option to search for backup copies follows, I find both the local copies and the Google Drive one, I It asks for the E2E encryption key, (I know it) I put my password (not 64 digits), the process starts and at 44% it gets stuck, then it jumps again saying that the data cannot be recovered from that backup. Now I don't have much hope anymore, but if anyone knows how to get encrypted_backup.key on a non-rooted device, maybe I can use the tool: WhatsApp-Crypt14-Crypt15-Decrypter from ElDavoo to at least have my conversations decrypted on a PC for consultation. (My database is in Crypt15)
Thanks.

[Samsung Galaxy A5 (2017) Android OS 8.0]
Hi, I backed up my phone to both Samsung backup and to Google Drive. I did a factory reset but it never restored. I was about to leave on a cruise and was kind of SOL.
The Samsung backup seems to be toast. Unless it keeps old backups and there's a way to access then, that way won't work as it's overwritten the backup with the newly reset phone.
I also backed up to Google Drive. I can even look at the files in the drive and there are 2 files that start with "takeout" and if you open them you see android files inside.
I just don't know how to restore from these. The file has the date on it, which is 2022, which is before my cruise. (Why am I so late asking? Caught covy and then got long haul..)
All I really care about is my text messages. My contacts would be great too, but I may have that on my PC. If the Google Drive backup doesn't work out I did save a bunch of my phones data to my PC manually. I know much of the OS folders show 0 files, but in some cases if I dug through some of the folders I would find files. I just have no idea if one of them would be my text messages.
I don't really understand what it is that I'm not getting. The instructions say to just go to the backup and click on it to restore it. Uhh no, that isn't working. :/
Thanks, I really hope I'm not SOL here.
A Factory Reset ( AKA Hard Reset ) only affects user data ( included apps ) , means all those added to phone since its 1st startup gets deleted / removed. That always works well on all Android phones.
Wondering why you want to play back the bad backups made?
I really only need the text messages and the contacts if I don't actually have a csv (sp?) file of them.
For the backup, I told it not to save the photos or programs. I have a list of the apps I didn't uninstall, and the photos on my PC. I think the reset, plus no apps saved will fix things.
Can I just restore the texts? Or, is it possible that one of the files I saved has them?
Thanks

Do you know I would be able to do what I mentioned in the post above this one? Still stuck.
Thanks
Hi, sorry to post again but I'm hoping the forum tells you that I'm replying to your message as I can't DM you.
[Added info] As I said above, I didn't backup the apps, just the texts and such, so a reset and restore should help. Even if it doesn't at least I can save the texts and contact list.
I still haven't found a solution to this. The Google app shows a restore that's also after the reset, BUT, I also have what is clearly a restore from before the reset. I don't care what jankcraft magic I have to do. How can I restore to that restore point? I have a copy on my PC. Can I tell the phone that I'm transferring data from a different phone on to this phone? Same phone of course.
The file on Google Drive starts with the word takeout and then has the date and time and is in a zip.
Nobody is posting any response to this but you, and someone else who pointed me to this section of XDA.
[Minor Edit] The files are "takeout1" and takeout2" with the date and times after them. The "takeout2" is the one from after the reset. Takeout1 is from before. If I delete "takeout2" will Google Restore see "takeout1?"
I'm dying here.
Thanks
