Android Hotspot/Tether users: How do limit the Hotspot WIFI data speed? - General Questions and Answers

When using Android as a Hotspot to stream video on Roku both devices want to run at max rate and eat up all monthly data. I would like to limit the data rate of the hotspot. Suppose I have a 10GB / month plan and limit my data rate to 2 Mbps then I can get 10,000*8/(2*3600) = 11.1 hours instead of 2 hours with Roku and phone running at the max rate. I can barely tell the difference in video quality.
I can't find the setting in Android to set this rate. I can only find the settings for the amount of data used. That doesn't help. I saw online a post showing an Android hotspot rate setting but I can't find what version of Android it is in or if it was a rooted version.
Overall, please post which flavor of Android allows the hotspot max data rate to be set by the user.

I found a solution. Buy a router that allows tethering and has QoS shaping control. Problem solved.

Data Transfer Rates

Hey guys, I apologize if this has been posted elsewhere. Basically, I'm having an issue with data transfer rates over both Wifi and EVDO. The maximum transfer rate I seem to be able to pull out of my Touch Pro is ~65 KB/s over BOTH my home Wifi connection (which gives me speeds of up to ~600 KB/s through convention CPU use) and EVDO (my "theoretical bandwidth is much higher than ~500kbps or 50-65 KB/s I am getting).
The questions are :
1) Is this the type of speed I should be expecting with a mobile device?
2) If so, is it due to the file system speed/cpu speed/etc?
3) If NOT, are there tweaks (akin to, for example, increasing the receive window/MTU on a PC) that will increase my speed?
Although I do transfer files over my home network, and achieving the ability to transfer at 54mbps would be nice, I am more concerned with my internet file transfer speeds!
Any help would be greatly appreciated...
bumped...because i know someone out there must know the answers
I just want to add my voice to this comment in case it's related. I can't speak for EVDO but I seem to have odd rate limiting issues over WLAN.
Streaming video over WLAN I average about 700kbps except for the occasional burst to 4500kbps while buffering (using TCPMP).
Watching youtube videos I get a pretty steady 100kbps (way better than the 64kbps limit I get while active synced).
Using NATF 2.3 ROM with fixed video drivers.
Surprised there isn't more input here. I have the same issues in that I basically get faster connectivity from 3G than wifi..why is that?
Wifi performance is so bad I can barely watch my slingbox over wifi or even complete a VoIP call without significant breakup due to lost packets.

Need to limit wifi bandwidth on Android Mobile Handsets

Hi all,
I have NBN Fibre 100mbps / 40mbps (300GB - 150 peak / 150 off-peak)
Modem/router is Audiocodes MP264
I have an HTC One M7 (rooted) and Galaxy Note Edge (no root)
I need to limit the speed of WIFI that is usable on the handsets as the kids waste the data watching Youtube in 1080p all the time. (so other apps too)
The modem is useless in setting QoS or Traffic Shapping, it cant be done.
Easy option is to change the WIFIs 802.11 to b or g and then the WIFI is only putting out to the devices about 7mbps-15mbps or there abouts rather than the much higher speeds n will provide.
Issues when using b or g is that the Samsung TV and the wifes iPhone will also be restricted.
Is there an application that will restrict WIFI download bandwidth directly on the devices either via a firewall or a WIFI manager app?
All I have been able to find is firewalls that allow or stop internet traffic, or WIFI managers that restrict uploads or tethering.
Can someone suggest any apps that can rate limit the WIFI on the device directly?
Or, is there a Youtube app that you can set the default playback resolution to something low (the official youtube app always goes 1080p via my WIFI)
Thank you
NVM - I have now found OGYouTube - this appears to be working fine, can limit both mobile and WIFI data by default - set to 360p (will use 240p if im feeling real harsh)

Bandwidth Control on Hotspot/USB tethering

I am using Netflix on PS4, which is connected to mobile Hotspot of OnePlus 6. As my data allowance is limited, I want to force the Hotspot to use maximum 1 mbps speed. My mobile data speed is around 10mbps.
I have found one app "Bandwidth Ruler", but it requires root to function properly. So Is there any way to limit the bandwidth of mobile Hotspot/USB tethering on OnePlus without root? Thanks for your help.
Sadly it impossible to do it without root.. If you have any extra router at home... You can set bandwidth limiting on your router

T-mobile binge on when tethering

Does anyone know how the T-Mobile Binge On (streaming of video and music without using up your high speed data allotment) when tethering? I am using a dedicated phone with 2GB of high speed data that is permanently tethered to a router in my home out in the country. Right now I can play music directly from that phone over bluetooth to a received and I'm pretty sure that's fine. However I'd like to add a smart tv on that wifi and/or chromecast from the phone to that TV (i think the latter case still has the tv do the video streaming). The question is, will T-mo consider that data as part of Binge On or will it go against my high speed usage? If latter, any way around it? I'm fine with getting the reduced quality content if it doesn't burn up my high speed data bucket.

Motorola E4 Nougat 7.1.1 Hotspot limit data rate option is missing

I am attempting to create a portable hotspot and limit the WIFI data rate to all connected devices to 1 Mbps. I can create the hotspot and connect devices to it. Their is only an option to limit the number of connected devices. How can I set a speed limit of 1 Mbps? Is this not available in the older versions of Android? Is there any other usable software I can download to do this? I see some references to BW Ruler software but would like to use built in software if it exists.
Thanks
I installed BW Ruler and the rate settings do not work and report an error. So it seems like Motorola has this special build for the MVNO that allows a hotspot but does not have the adjustable rate setting built into the OS build. It seems there is no way to set the hotspot data rate max limit. It seems Apple IOS doesn't have this option in any builds either.
