Samsung Galaxy A20e (SM-A202F/DS) bootloop | No more Download mode available - General Questions and Answers

Hello,
I bought a Samsung Galaxy A20e, model name : SM-A202F/DS
First I unlocked the boot-loader,
then I flashed a TWRP custom recovery that I downloaded here :
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1Nbrmn7BgA3BxA1bqnLXYMuCY4KjpR0Vn/view
The custom recovery was working well. I tried to flash an another kernel in order to flash another system (various Android GSI I could find).
Apart from one kernel that seams to be flashed correctly from TWRP, no System would boot at any time.
So I decided to go back to the stock ROM of the phone temporarily.
To do so I found one on the internet, went to Download mode, and tried to flash it with Odin (v3.14.1).
The flash was unsuccessful. At that point I came with a blue screen (similar to download mode) telling me that I should use Samsung emergency recovery function in the Smart Switch PC software.
I installed this software (made all updates available) and went to the dedicated section. Unfortunately, no phone could be detected for recovery. But the PC could still detect the phone at that time.
So I decided to flash just the kernel (from stock archive) with Odin if I remember well. (unchecked other parts).
And since that, my phone is bootloop-ing when I plug it to the computer.
The screen first displays classic Samsung logo with model phone name and warning due to unlocked boot-loader.
And 2 seconds later, a little portion of the screen (top left) displays a message starting with:
“KERNEL REV. CHECK FAIL. DEVICE: 3, BI…” I can’t read the rest due to the front camera placement. I found results on the internet that it could be “kernel rev check fail-device:3 binary:x boot” for example. This message and only the text part is “backgrounded” with the same color as the Download mode blue color. And 5 seconds later the phone reboot for the same sequence.

I tried all combinations that could possibly bring me to the download mode or any recovery that could still be there.
Vol UP + Vol DOWN
Vol UP + Vol DOWN + PWR
Vol UP + PWR
Vol DOWN + PWR
Vol UP + Cable Plug
Vol DOWN + Calble Plug
Vol UP + Vol DOWN + Cable Plug
etc
The phone is still bootloop-ing if let plugged (USB to PC or USB to Charger), and get never detected by the computer. Neither on Windows 10 (previously detecting the phone) nor on Linux with "ADB devices" or "Fastboot devices" commands. I used 2 different cables including the one given with the phone.
I found a post on this forum, telling it could be due to damaged power button. I opened the phone, unlike the side panel buttons cable from the motherboard, same result.
If you have any ideas, they are welcome
Sorry for this huge post, hope my English is clear enough
Thank you very much and happy new year !

I found an app on windows that was able to put my android into download mode, after it did that I used the program to restart my device and quickly pushed the download mode buttons and flashed a stock rom

ReiBoot for android, when connecting your device it automatically put you in download mode, even though it won't look like it, using the program click exit download mode, it will put you in the boot option, quickly hold the power and the volume to enter the recovery options and choose download mode

There're obviously an Android and an iOS version available but they are paid applications.

It is paid but you don't need to pay for it, you can still use it without paying, It will still get you into download mode, that's free

Hey guys,
I just brought my phone (samsung SM-a202f) back from the dead it was stuck in emercency mode (asking to connect to smart switch) after I did something wrong flashing TWRP. I did it a million times but appearently I screwed up because my phone was stuck in the emercency mode bootloop and Odin did see the phone in emercency mode, but could not flash stock rom with or without bootloader.
I knew I had the right firmware (thanks to samfirm) and found the PIT file in the SCS .tar.md5 file. Just remove the .md5 of the name of the scs file and then unzip so you have the PIT file. What you do is feed that to odin under the pit tab and then use Odin like you normally would use it to flash a complete Rom on it.
Hope this helps someone. Happy 2022!

Download mode not working anymore!!! PLEASE help

Hello
I downloaded the [ROM-ODIN]T959VUVKB5 Stock + Root
but it will not re-install all the Bloatware on my phone
I want to try the [ROM-ODIN] Deodexed KB5 Enhanced v1.5 rom now
However, I just can't enter Download Mode anymore
If I press Volume Up + Volume Down + HOME + Power button, I can enter the recovery mode or whatever it's called
If I press Volume Down + Home Button + Power Button the phone boots normally
I do remember accessing Download Mode before, when I install the Stock + Root ROM
At this point I'm so frustrated I am just going to return the phone to the store and cancel the whole T-Mobile contract
Samsung Galaxy S 4G was supposedly the BEST OF THE BEST but with 200MB out of stock I just can't use this phone too much, since a few apps use 20MB per app (Google Earth, Adobe Air...)
Anyway, I want to reinstall all the Bloatware, so I'd appreciate if someone can tell me how to restore this phone to factory settings, with all the bloatware and all that crap
I appreciate your responses
pop the bat out, remove the sim. put bat back on.

Shut down your phone. pull the battery out. connect your tether cable to the phone and USB to computer. start oden, put tar file in PDA box. don't change any other settings. Put your phone in download mode by pressing both up/down volume buttons (not Power) and insert the battery. once in download mode, click on Start on oden. As for the bloatware, you are going to get whatever apps that are in the tar file. I think Some of the bloat has been removed. Not sure what, but it seems most of it is still there. I think DriveSmart is gone

THANK YOU BROTHER
I was 20 minutes away from going to T-Mobile
Ok, so why is this procedure different from other procedures?
To recap
1) Shut down your phone
2) Start ODIN and select TAR file
3) Press Volume Up/Volume UP simultaneously
4) Insert battery
5) Click Start in Odin
Now my question, in Step 3, after I press Volume Up/Volume Down, and I insert the battery, should I press the power button or not?
I appreciate your help, however, I have a new problem now

This thing is not progressing at all
I remember the first time I did that I saw some progress both in the phone and in the program
Now I see SOME progress in the program, but that progress stopped a WHILE ago
Now the phone tells me
Downloading...
Do not turn off Target!!!
Now what should I do?
I would REALLY appreciate if you can continue helping me please since you seem to have experience with this
The Three fingered salute Vol up/down/power is a master reset to get back to original image file. When you mess-up the image you have to recover some other way. So far with the SGS4G the only way that is working until CWM is fixed is the oden process. It appears that oden is kind of a quirky program. Sometimes it locks up and you have to try again. So you need to have to give it time to work and if it fails you have to try again. Master reset uses files that are on the memory on the phone. Oden uses files on an external source an pushes them to the phone. To enable the push the phone has to be in download mode to receive the files. There is a device you can purchase to plug into the phone that will put the phone into download mode. It cost about $10. Its kinda handy if you are doing this alot, but removing the battery pushing both volume buttons and inserting the battery gets you there. You can also remove and reinsert the battery then plug in the tethering cable while pushing the buttons also as Krylon360 has pointed out.
Yeah if I don't see a progress bar in the phone, I'll just reboot
I finally have flashed the Samsung Galaxy S 4G to two ROMS
1) T959VKB5-Custom
2) KB5Deodexv15
I hope at least one of those can return the Bloatware
I want to recover the bloatware because it was located in the folder
/system/
So it doesn't occupies space in the folder /data/
1) T959VKB5-Custom is a better ROM since it restored Drive Smart and Think Office
The other ROM has nothing
I'm glad I finally discovered how to insert ROMs into my Samsung Galaxy S 4G

Glad to hear you got it working. You may be able to find some of the apps you are looking for that are missing. Look around XDA I've seen some posts of others asking for some of the missing apps. There are some programs like Android Commander that can install APKs from your computer if you can download them there. You might be able to find some of those apps on the market possibly.

Yeah...echoing Beef's question - you know you're in the 4g forum right? You shouldn't be flashing 2.3.3 on a SGS4g. If you're having issues flashing a vibrant (not the 4g), try posting in their forums.

Hi, when i tried rooting gb 2.3.3 with dsexton702's method i have the download mode problem. I tried all the methods possible here (except 4th in my case) but it did not work. It's 3.00 am here and I'm in panic my only way is to get that device because i'm in Turkey and no T-mobile here.
So, please tell me more about the thing you mentioned may be i can find it in here.
Please somebody help me!!
I think it may be because you have gb. Something to do with the boot loaders. There are a few other threads about download mode in gingerbread on the development section.
Sent from my SGH-T959V using XDA Premium App
You can put in download mode through adb... Goto command prompt
Cd/
Cd Androidsdk
Cd tools
Adb reboot download

If you are having issues getting into DL mode after trying to go to GB, this method will likely not help you. This will get you to the recovery menu (blue) or CWM (Red or Orange) depending what you have installed on your phone. To get into recovery press the vol UP/DN/Power then release the buttons just before it cycles off again. I let it cycle once or twice so I can time when to release the buttons. I just count to about 4 or 5 then release the buttons. If you tried to install GB you will have to get into DL mode and flash the phone using Oden again using another ROM such as the KD1 ROM.
EDIT. To get into DL mode I use the method #3. Shut down phone. Pull battery out. Get oden setup on your computer by putting a Rom into the PDA box (Such as PDA_KD1.tar.md5). Put battery back in the phone. Hold the vol/up/dn buttons only. Then plug in your USB cable into your phone. That should put you in DL mode. Oden will detect your phone and light up yellow in the top first box and indicate which COM port you are on. If you can get that far press START and flash away. What you will likely have to do is flash the KC1 ROM with the Hawk_Sidekick_VibrantPlus_831.pit. That should bring your system back so you can flash other ROMs. Check This Post for directions on using this method. This is one way people have been recovering from GB problems. The top part explains how to get KC1 ROM installed. You can flash the KD1 ROM after that if you want, Just don’t use the Pit file or check repartition when going to KD1.
Thanx for your all help here guys! The next day i woke up early and my sister was about to leave home to do some walking, i told the situation to her and when i get back from toilet my phone was in download mode!! she thinks she pressed only vol down button and plugged the usb then the battery. I think the gingerbread download mode button combination can be different than the froyo. I wont try to get into download mode for a while not to have more adrenaline but as soon as i test and confirm i will post it here.

[SOLVED] Really "bricked" Nexus S after bad update

So official ics update! i was happy! I restored a 2.3.6 backup with cwm and applyed the official zip. But on reboot.. nothing, zero splashscreens, not even google logo. Now if i press power button the screen turn on but it keeps blank and there are no vibrations.. if i release power button then the screen turns off..
Is my nexus s (i9023) in a known state?
Plz help me!
Edit: after some plug/unplug/push/detach ecc i got this nexus s connected to my pc: windows 7 says: "samsung sec s5pc110 test b/d"
i'm googling..
SOLVED!
Big huge thanks to Adam!
Follow his tips here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=20382688&postcount=16
I had to use a standard linux box, ubuntu virtualizend on vmware fusion didn't work.
With Adam tool you can get both download and recovery mode depending on what hardkey you press (both vol or only vol up) during resurrection.
You are in download mode if search and home softkeys are on
You are in recovery mode if back and menu softkeys are on
You can try the way of recovery mode (with fastboot), for me (i9023) fastboot did not recognize the device.
Download mode solution
After resurrection you'll get a nice download mode (search and home button on and others off, not viceversa).
Now run a virtualized windows (or restart your pc if you have dualboot) and use odin to restore your device (bootloader radio system) to a stock rom like 2.3.3.
Why a virutalized windows or dual boot? Cause if you unplug the device you lose download mode.
Quick how to for odin:
You need samsung drivers installed
Files for european i9023 nexus s: http://www.multiupload.com/A6OP3TFN0I
Googling it seems that they are good also for i9020 amoled nexus s (i'm not responsable about that!)
I used odin v 1.83 (only this version worked for me) on windows. Order of files in odin:
- Bootloader > Bootloader_I9023XXKA3.tar.md5
- PDA > PDA_SOJU_GRI54_TMO_EUR_MR1_SIGNED.tar.md5
- PHONE > MODEM_I9023XXKB3_REV_00_CL912571_SIGNED.tar.md5
- CSC > DGS_I9023_EUR.tar
This doesn't solve all problems: at this step i can turn my device on only using a usb powered cable. You need to apply cwm and restore your backup.
So:
Enter recovery mode: plug usb cable (battery appears now!) push vol up and power on.
Apply cwm as usual:
fastboot flash recovery recovery-clockwork.img
Click to collapse
and enter recovery mode using device interface.
Restore your backup and reboot. Wait for a long boot (need caching all your apps) and it's done!

I got nexus firmware running on a captivate.. might just work on a nexus too
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1247962
I would like a nexus to work with. If someone wants to send me a device, I can locate UnBrickable mod and update my resurrector
The upgrade is only for T-Mobile Nexus S (I-9020T), nither I-9020A nor I-9023!
can you upgrade if you're running 2.3.6 I9020XXKF1
it is a tmo version
Same here. Installed from 2.3.6 and now it won't turn on.
Someone send me a device. Send me a pm. I have a recovery option and I can make your device UnBrickable.

I already did.. I sent the link.
However, I just finished rewriting the UnBrickable Resurrector for this device.
YOU MUST BE RUNNING A DEBIAN BASED LINUX.
Instructions:
Verify you are running the latest version of Java http://java.com/en/download/installed.jsp
Download UnBrickable Resurrector Revision 37
Right click the app and run with Java
Select "S5PC110 (Nexus S)" From the drop-down list in the app.
Plug in your device
Click resurrect.
Use fastboot to reload software
Let me know if it works
This worked on my Captivate which was in the same mode.

The resurrector has managed to get my device up and running to the Google logo and the padlock screen, now I just need to fix the rest!

[Q] Soft brick and no ROM?

Looks like I have soft brick and no ROM.
I have rooted Samsung GT-S7562 Galaxy S Duos, and I wanted to falsh a PMP_U500_GT-S7562.zip ROM.
I managed to install CWM using Odin.
Then I obtained ROM manager from Play Store, and restarted to a recovery mode (before the restart I was asked wither to wipe -- I said yes, do it). On restart I've chosen PMP_U500_GT-S7562.zip on sdcard and pressed install. It did something, and restarted to a screen with a yellow triangle and an exclamation mark.
The only thing that works -- is Vol+ Home Power combination -- it brings me to a ARM9 mode RAMDUMP mode. If during this I plug the phone to windows kies tries to connect to it, but never seems to succed, and Odin sees the phone.
I tried to put recovery.tar the same way I did when installing CWM. The proccess seems eternal.
Any ideas on what I may try to do with odin? Since odin seems the only thing which can get to my phone now.
I also tried OneClick.jar to no success on Windows and on Linux.

Your key combo is wrong, recovery is: http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/Samsung_Galaxy_S_Duos/GT-S7562#Recovery_Mode
But anyway since your phone is borked, I would advise an ODIN reflash. Get the proper ROM image for your device and flash it in download mode.
See here: http://www.idroidspace.com/original-stock-rom-for-galaxy-s-duos-gt-s7562/
Best of luck and do take care while doin an ODIN flash, a wrong step and you are gonna end up with an expensive paperweight.

Oh I solved it.
Get into a download mode
Remove batary for a moment. Then install it, press VolDown+Power+Home for some 5 seconds, then press VolUp. After this connect phone to PC (with Kies installed).
Odin (version 1.85) in the PDA field choose stock_recovery.tar file.
This will reboot Your phone. Get into the download mode again. This time in the PDA field choose [StockRom].tar.md5
This will reboot phone to a working state. Try to flash a custom rom in a week or something.

Galax S7 does not turn on – Nothing works

Hi,
today in the morning I couldn’t turn on my S7. It went off while charging overnight. Then I tried to hold the volume down and the power button together for twelve seconds and the S7 turned on. Unfortunately it just boots to the Samsung logo and nothing happens since then.
I wrote to the Samsung support and they told me to send it in. And they also said that I will lose my warranty if I make a hard reset. Is that true? Because the other thing is, that I really need some very important data from just one app. I already did a hard reset in the past and the data from this app didn’t get lost. I don’t know why (no cloud synchronization) but it worked. My plan was to try a hard reset but my phone is fully charged and I cannot turn it off to get into Recovery mode.
So basically I have three questions:
1. Will I lose my warranty if I do a hard reset?
2. Is there any possibility turn off my phone or to unload my battery? (And after that to try a hard reset.)
3. Does anyone have any idea how to save some date by any other way?
Thank you very much for any help!
Samsung are full of sh** if they told you you would lose warranty by performing a full reset, nothing of the sort
Warranty is checked by KNOX 0x0 = valid (Or 0x1 if it is tripped) which is only tripped by flashing something custom / rooting
Try booting into recovery and clearing only the caches, see if you can get back in that way
Otherwise, flashing the same stock ROM over the top with ODIN may work
Thank you for your answer.
Any idea how to boot into recovery mode? The problem is that in the moment I cannot turn off my phone and it's fully charged. I guess it would last some days to wait until the battery is empty. And unfortunately you can't remove the ****ing battery.

Volume up & Home & Power
Keep those buttons held in until the phone reboots, continue holding them and it should reboot a 2nd time, this time hopefully entering recovery
You can try the same for download mode, which is the same combo, only volume down instead of up

I did this combo. Following message did pop up:
"Warning
A custom OS can cause critical problems in phone and installed applications. If you want to download a custom OS, press the volume up key. Otherwise, press the volume down key to cancel."
First i pressed the volume down button and then nothing happened and it booted again until the Samsung logo. In my second try I pressed the volume up button and now I am here (see attached pics).

Well that's download mode where you can flash the stock ROM with ODIN, so you can at least flash stock again, which may work, but I would try recovery first though, the first combo I posted with Volume Up

I tried the combo with the vol up key and I came to the exact same menu which I described above. (Then I pressed the volume down key and the phone boooted to the Samsung logo).
Now only the combo with the vol down key works. If I press vol up + home + power nothing happens. I don't get this ****.

OK, it's possible that recovery got corrupted then
Right, so grab a stock ROM from here
http://updato.com/firmware-archive-select-model?q=G930F
Extract and Load the .MD5 into ODIN AP section
Put the phone into download mode and hit start
It should reboot hopefully into a working OS
if not, try entering recovery again
ODIN

No, as I said earlier, warranty is only affected if you flash something custom
Stock Samsung ROMs are not custom
For a very short time my phone startet adnroid, but everyhing was black und I just saw the notifications bar. I couldn't do anything. After that my phone did a reboot and now I am again at the Samsung logo. The combi with vol up still doesn't work.

You managed to download and flash a stock ROM in that short time?
Might need to flash the entire set of files from the ROM download in ODIN, which I think might reset the phone with one of them (HOME I think)
EDIT - Another option would be firmware recovery using SmartSwitch
http://www.samsung.com/uk/smart-switch/samsung-desktop-app.html
Good day.
Recently happened to me something similar, while i was playing, the phone rebooted and got stuck at samsung logo.
The phone was rooted, with TWRP and Xposed.
Really don't know what happened. At the time, in panic, i flashed a stock ROM and the phone never booted again. Just a blank screen and a blue led.
I sent my phone to Samsung for warranty and 1 month later (5 days ago), got it back working, even with KNOX 1x0.
In most of Europe, Samsung cannot charge you anything even if the phone was rooted, with the exception if it was root that directly caused the malfunction.
I am having the same problem. the combo with Vol up does not work. Any further help, PLEASE?

[Help Fixing unusual bricked] samsung sd-t510

Hello everyone im glad to be at your presence but not for great issue.
Ive bricked my tablet, softbricked that turned into hardbricked. Long story short:
1 unlocked boot loader
2 installed twrp
3 installed wrong version of postmarketos
4 cannot boot into OS but in recovery mode
5 in recovery mode Ive updated twrp with a unstable version
6 cannot boot in recovery mode
7 cannot boot into twrp, cannot boot already into OS
8 RESULT: completly fail, not recovery mode, not twrp, not os. Only bootloop samsung logo and the message warning that the boot loader is unlocked, forever.
9 solutions failed count: pushing buttons to enter download / recovery mode, using fastboot from the pc, using adb from the pc in both cases the program awaits devices forever never showing the brick, already change usb port and cable.
your samsung device have fastboot? sure it's sd-t510?
Hello, sorry i mean sm-t510
Im not sure if it has it , but I have run it from windows as last resort to unbrick the device, I ve run adb but nothing.
Re-flash tablets's Stock ROM by means of ODIN. Requires matching Samsung's Android USB drivers gets installed on PC.
you don't need adb. you can enter odin download mode when tablet is powered off completely. hold volume down + power for ~ 30 sek to force power down. if nothing works let battery drain (may take up to ~ 7 days)
when device is powered off, press and keep holding Volume down + plug in usb wall charger until you see blue screen. then press volume up to confirm odin mode. you can now let charge for ~ 5 min
for flashing connect to PC, install drivers, use Odin3 for full flash BL + AP + CP + CSC.
Note the current bootloader level is important when flashing stock ROM. you can't downgrade bootloader, choose wise which Android version you want to flash.
for example
RP SWREV: B:5 = 5
T510XXU5CVG2 = 5
https://samfw.com/firmware/SM-T510
IT cannot, by any means login in bootloader or dowload mode. I already tried pushing and mantaining vol up + power button and any other combination.

let it boot-loop until battery is drained (see my previous comment)

Already did that, i gets in the same loop, even I disconnected the battery , reattched it , let it run dry, just connecting the power cable. Everything went to bootloop forever until the battery run dry.
if you disconnected battery (you did open back cover?) press and keep holding Volume down + plug in usb wall charger + connect battery (in this order)
you can use a hair tie or something.
other combination for older Samsung devices: Volume Down + Home + Power
the volume keys determining boot mode are read from aboot_init() function. this is way before boot or recovery mode is loaded. if you can reach boot-loop, for sure you have passed aboot before.

Im for sure that I ve pushed the vol down , vol up+ power, the vol up and down combination in the exact same order you gave me and it keep looping for centuries
... then fix your volume down button
as I said odin mode is decided from sboot. it will work. unless you flashed modified sboot* with download mode forcefully disabled, like retail or MDM software.
*partition name varies abl/sboot/aboot/uboot/lk
press and keep holding before device get powered on by USB plug:
- VOLUME_DOWN and HOME keys for old samsung devices
- VOLUME_DOWN key for new samsung devices
Update: I gave you wrong advise. This tablet is bit different from other Samsung devices. as you already pointed out it requires both volume keys for download mode.
Magendanz said:
UPDATE: With the right timing, you can break out of a boot loop into Download Mode...but it's tricky:
Insert USB Type C cable connected to your PC
Press and hold the Power and Volume Down keys for exactly 7 seconds (hard reset)
Release the Power key and press and hold both Volume Up & Down keys (enter Download Mode)
If you don't see the blue bootloader unlock warning screen, keep repeating the above two steps
The trick here is that you're trying to time your switch to the Download Mode keys for the exact moment the hard reset takes effect. If you see the boot logo while still holding the first key combination, it's too late. If you switch too early, you won't trigger the hard reset.

It took me an eternity to enter in dl mode. It is so annoying. Thank you for the pain is relieving, now i can sleep.
But, it is recognized by odin added, and is stuck in setup connection.
re-install drivers. maybe use another usb 2.0 port. try older version of Odin3.

https://odindownloader.com
Now it says unknown usb device, on windows, device descriptor request failed , in device manager
same for every usb port? do you have oem samsung cable? boot linux from pendrive and double check with 'lsusb'

Yes, my guess is that after 24 hours in dl mode, the tablet is going unstable
there is mentioned a timeout not sure this affect the device descriptor, though. you should see something like 04e8:685d device, without that usb connection you can't flash anything.
Now that you know how to enter download mode, should be no problem to repeat.
note there is a fork of heimdall with precompiled binaries for windows/linux you can try (in case Odin3 deny flashing even on successful connection)
https://github.com/amo13/Heimdall/releases
The thing is that the exact timing for entering dw mode is like win the lotery. I managed to enter in it only 2 times in 2 weeks. Technically is not bricked but practically it is... I cannot enter it anymore.
I believe usb port plays a role here. forget the power button, only use volume keys + usb cable to power on. maybe replace usb jack pcb board?
