I've owned a nexus 4 for six months before this. The screen feels better than the nexus 4 in hand, don't know if it's because of the gorilla glass 3 or different coating. Did anyone's coating wear off yet? I'm refraining from cleaning the display because I'm scared the coating will wear off. It also isn't getting dirty in the first place, the oleophobic coating is good this time.

I never had an issue with the N4 regarding the oleophic coating wearing off bro.
On the Corning website there is a whitepaper about the Gorilla Glass 3 coating. It was specifically designed to withstand wiping, 20,000 wipes so and that's with the worst case scenario "rubbing the screen on your clothes". It also recovers over 99% of the screen visibility in just a wipe or two.
It did also outline using different cleaning products and chemicals. All of them degraded the coating and were not recommended.
Do spigen clear screen protectors 10 bucks for a three pack and solved.

I did. But it was after about 6 months of use and I think I made the mistake of using windex with alcohol to clean it. Lesson learned...

Mine wore off after 3 weeks. Not the entire screen though. More like two lines towards the bottom of the screen. Call Google Play to get it replaced. It really shouldn't happen within 3 weeks of use.
On my nexus 4 which I got last year at launch, the coating has worn off in two places, only noticed this the last month or so. Never used anything to clean it apart from a bit of spit and my tea shirt a few times.
1) Where I scroll web pages, lower rightish, about an inch or so long and a finger tip+ wide.
2) A very small patch right at the bottom in the middle, where I slide up for pie controls.
I hope the n5 has a more durable coating.

Yikes, Windex has ammonia. Very hard on this kind of stuff.
Guys, use a dry microfiber cloth. You can get it slightly damp with water to power through any dried on pieces of god-knows-what. Your coating should outlast the phone.
Microfiber is king. I never even have to wet it down.

Ok this is the first time I hear about the coating on Gorilla glass wearing off. This stuff is fused into the glass. I've used windex, alcohol and other chemicals on both my N4 and N5 and have never seen any wear marks of any kind.
How do you know you have a wear spot? Can anyone post a picture?

Corning recommends not using any chemicals. They degrade the coating somewhat as it was designed to make wiping marks and stains away easy with only cloth. 10 wipes a day should last 5 years or so.

OK, I can understand what the glass manufacturer recommends but I was asking for pictures. Had anyone had actually damaged it using cleaning fluids? Like I mentioned, I've used windex and alcohol on my N4 almost each day for the past year and the screen looks brand new each time I clean it.
I would not recommend Windex as it can actually undergo chemical reactions with coatings. Diluted alcohol-based lens cleaners should be safer.
I had my first N5 for a few weeks but it had 7 dead pixels, so I got an RMA swap. The first one I just threw in my pocket without any protection, and after two weeks I noticed in very bright direct light a few tiny surface scratches - presumably in the surface coating. Not as bad as what would happen on Galaxy Nexus but I didn't want it to get any worse. So now I'm using a screen protector.

That's surface scratches... totally different than some wear spots from some presumable coating coming off.
I'm sorry but I think your note about some chemical reaction with Windex is total BS. That's just from my experience actually using Windex on the surface.
I've used a damp microfiber cloth to wipe my screen. I felt that my finger didn't glide as smooth as before with my Nexus 4 before. But the coating on the nexus 5 is great, I never even had to wipe my screen yet because the coating is just that good.

Have it your way. Ammonia is a nucleophile. It can open up certain types of chemical bonds. Prolonged use with any sort of polymer such as a coating can cause permanent chemical changes.

I too have never hear of the coating coming off. I'm a paramedic and use some harsh cleaners on my phone and have never had a problem.
Edit: I realized this this discussion is more about the screen coating screen cracks, I have made a different post instead. I did not delete this post encase it is interesting as it is screen related, however if you feal it is to off topic I will delete it.
I have been lucky so far but my co-worker's phone died not even two weeks in. He said his kid had knocked a glass (cup/mug) over hitting the screen at an unusual angle.
The phone it self works grate but it must have caught the screen at the wrong angle for it to crack. I say this because I have dropped my Nexus 5 with some force and it has been fine so far. Also its not often I see a crack starting from the side (see pic) and not one of the corners.
The only place here in Edmonton, Alberta (Canada) that would repair it had a price that was ~50 shy of a brand new Nexus 5 (he has a 16gig).
Edit: The screen protector in the pic was not attached during the crack it is a iPhone4 protector added after the crack so that the phone can be used without bleeding fingers.
Hi
A bit of a thread bump, but this came up in my search... I had my Nexus 5 since launch day, but in the last few months I have noticed two rather large areas of the middle of the screen are always oily or "smudged".
If I clean the screen by carefully applying sellotape and then lifting, all oil and smudges are removed, but even after cleaning my hands and using the screen lightly in the same two areas there is always a permanent smudge, and in those areas it feels different, as if the coating is removed.
I have not used any screen protectors or cleaners and I take great care of my Nexus.
It is annoying with the glare.
I haven't had a phone do this before..
I have started a more recent thread here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2637312 but perhaps this thread will have subscribers viewing it.
Cheers
I recently purchased a tempered glass screen protector for my nexus 5. From using it so far I love most everything about it. It feels just like the screen without a screen protector and does not smudge is easily as the other screen protectors I would use. Since I'm used to paying a lot less for screen protectors I took a lot of time to apply the screen protector. I took about 30 minutes, but it was worth it since I applied it perfectly. Not a piece of dust, so straight it looks like the screen itself. However as soon as I applied it I was disappointed to see these weird patterns under the screen. I said spider webs because that is the best term I can think of to describe them. It almost looks like little circles of fiber are under the screen. The biggest one has a little rainbow circle in the middle surrounded by what looks like a spider web. Any help would be appreciated.

It's moisture - did you apply it in a wet environment? I applied mine in a bathroom after running a hot shower (to settle the dust) and ended up with something that looks exactly like this.
Bump. I just need to know if it is a faulty screen protector so I can return it
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
Its a known issue with the N5. Almost everyone has the spider web with the tampered glass, especially by the mic. You might be able to get rid of it by using binder clips or some sort of clips and leave it over night.
I was in a bathroom since it has the least dust but it was dry at the time. I did wipe it down with 70% isopropyl rubbing alcohol. I didn't notice any left at the time and I figure it would have all evaporated quickly anyways. What did you end up doing with yours?
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
I heard about the binder clip thing, but I'm way too protective of my phone and would honestly just rather buy another screen protector.I wasn't aware the problem is common in the n5. Thanks for the input!
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
Don't buy the same screen protector. You'll get the same result. Mine also have that little dimple on the bottom right portion on my phone. If you must, get the iloom flex glass or similar kind. It goes on your screen without air bubble trapped unlike the non bendable glass protector. Hope this helps.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using xda app-developers app
you can try massaging them just like getting rid of bubbles from a plastic screen protector. applying pressure using your fingers.
if you don't want to use binders, you can use clothespin with a cloth in between to apply pressure.
I initially had them but after doing the above I got rid of it and it never came back.
It could well be a faulty screen protector. Which brand did you buy? I had an identical problem with my spigen tempered glass screen protector. Luckily they were happy to replace/refund it as it was known to have come from the original, faulty batch they initially released around the release date of the nexus 5.

Its not faulty, I'm very OCD myself, and I had the same thing with a tempered glass screen protector from Anker.
It took about a week of gentle massaging, and rubbing, but it comes out. You just need to keep rubbing it...
DO NOT SAY THATS WHAT SHE SAID
But seriously... thats all
may need the "glue" to take care of it...
use a hair drier and get it warm... then use pressure and come clothe clips... i think a binder clip is too strong
see what happens
I used a small adjustable wrench with cloth covering the back of phone and the glass. With it you decide how firm its clamped.
20 minutes and the big bubble to the right of the led was gone. Never to return. ?

An update to provide info to those in the future. Not wanting to try anything with my phone until trying out a new one, I contacted the person who sold it to me. The eBay seller kindly sent me a new one, so as soon as I got it, I applied it. I was even more careful, and was frustrated every time it was half a millimeter off. Once again, I applied it perfectly. I put my finger on the center of it, and watched it slowly stick. My heart dropped when it revealed the bubbles, in the identical spots as they were in before. Not to mention the biggest one seems bigger and there is a slight patterned line in the middle. I haven't decided yet. I might try the methods everyone provided (Thanks!), or I will get myself a nice spigen one. I think it might have been because it was some cheap protector. The pictures are below.

I used binder clips but I used a thick microfiber cloth before I put the binder clip on and it worked 100%. I had a small area near the camera at the top and placed a MF cloth over it and used the end of a ball point pen (Not the tip) and put pressure on it and it disappeared. It's now been 1 month and its still flawless.
If you don't clamp and leave it clamped for 20 minutes or so on those bubbles, they will likely appear on any glass protector. Its a widely know n5 screen issue.
A binder clip....or a medium adjustable wrench work great. Careful not to over tighten and break the glass tho. And use padding....cloth.
Some guys here keep returning them, thinking they are all defective adhesive in the exact same spots. Lol. Especially the well known big spot to the right of the led.

I had the same issue like you. You have to take the back cover off and unscrew the bolt that is under to bubble. The screen is fitted with 4 bolts at the bottom. It is too tightened.

No. You can easily take it off with a plastic card. It's fitted with clips.
I recently noticed this strange blemish around the home button of my GS5 Dev. Edition. The phone has never been dropped in the water and when I clean the screen with eyeglass cleaner or alcohol you can't see the blemish. Once you get some oil from your hands on the screen it becomes visible again.
Samsung wasn't much help when I called them about it and were going to make me pay to fix it. The phone is only about 6mo old.
I really want to buy a Note 4, but I feel bad giving them repeat business when I've never abused this phone and clearly there is something wrong with the screen and they want me to pay to fix it
What would you do in my position?
if you're using a screen protector, i suggest you change it, because with use, the area eroded and subsequently of a different texture than the rest. My HTC One has such a mark on the Home button, which is invisible usually, but with oily hands, is visible.

So it disappears when you clean it? Almost sounds like an issue with the oleophobic coating. (It's an oil-rejecting coating applied in the factory that wears off after a few months. You can buy it to apply yourself as well)
I've seen several thousand Samsung devices, but never this issue.
A screen protector should solve the issue if that is the case. That way residue from your fingers doesn't end up on the actual screen.

Hello Guys,
i am asking the community here if anyone has any kind of hint for me:
i recently bought me a Xiaomi Mi4i as a replacement for my beloved Nexus 4 (display broken) and i must say that it really is a nice toy
But after nearly 2 -3 days of using it i am facing these strange problems inside the red area as seen on the picture Mi4i.jpg
There is a sort of dirty film on the surface which is not to be cleaned away with any material i used (clean cloth, paper towel, microfiber cloth, t-shirt, lens cleaner, tft cleaner).
At first the display seems to be clean but then again this dirty film comes back (check the other two attached pictures starting with IMG).
Does anybody know what my problem is? What can i do instead of using RMA cause this will take some time from germany to Hong-Kong
Kind Regards
Full disclaimer , I was sent these screen protectors for free for the promise of a review. I also purchased a set for my girlfriends V30 (more on that later)
The package came with a bottle of cleaning / application fluid, a rather large microfiber cloth (larger that Skinomi or ArmorSuit) and 2 screen protectors. Also a heavy business card sized item that could be used for a squeegee or whatnot , but I chose to use a rubber one that I have used before.
The installation was a mess. I followed the instructions closely .I cleaned the phone , sprayed down the sp , phone and my fingers well then applied the sp to the phone as shown in the installation video. All was good until I proceeded to remove the Stretch Guard top cover from the SP. I grabbed the bent back corner and pulled at 180 degrees , and it came right off , with the SP along with it. Took me a second to notice this , and thus the first SP was trashed due to being set down on my desk. Bummer . Okay , so I watch the video again , bend the corner again and proceed to install the second SP (thank goodness it came with 2 right?) . This time I am quite careful , but it still pulls the SP up with it . I am holding down on the corner , pulling at 180 degrees and yet it still pulled up the SP and introduced a new set up bubbles underneath the SP and moved the alignment as well. I was able to get it straight and remove what I thought were all the visible bubbles. Then out with the hairdryer to get the corner and sides to stick down. This also was crazy because the SP wanted to stick to my fingers like glue, so I grabbed the microfiber cloth and used that where I needed and did the heat press heat repeat until the SP was firmly in place all around the screen.
Well , after using the hair dryer to get it finished, I cleaned the surface of the SP off and I found I had bubble like areas in the SP , but no visible air underneath. I looked as good as I could and could not see dust particles , but it has that feel to it. I can be seen in the attached pics. So far I am not too impressed by these SP's , the installation seem harder than needed. I have installed plenty of both glass and plastic protectors in the past , and I will say this install was the most difficult of the plastic ones I have ever done. I am not a pro by no means , and only install protectors once every couple of months. I feel that the top plastics (stretch guard) has way too much stick to it and pulls up the SP making it difficult to keep the SP on the phone. Also think there is a little issue with the adhesive under the SP , it seems to set up quickly in the middle making positioning of the SP during install a pain.
I plan to wait a little bit before trying the install again on my girls V30 , will put the Armor Suit on her's tonight instead. I also will give these "bubbles" a few days to see if they disappear.
Hopefully the troubles I had will help someone else who tries these SPs , maybe a heads up on the issue will make your install go better.
Okay... not so fast I guess. When I checked this morning, most of the "bubbles" were gone and the protector had a very different look and feel. Just did so notes with the spen and the feel is great. Plus, it really didn't leave any marks on the screen. I will mess with it a bunch today and post some more pics when I get home.

did you use lots of liquid , little bit of liquid , or some where in the middle?
I want this to work ,because like you said the spen works on it greatly. After 24 hours of being on all original bubbles and deformities are gone. only trouble is edge coming up with a Spigen liquid crystal case and a Monarch UAG case . I most likely will order another set , just because of the way the spen works so well , to see if I can get a better job on the install process.
attached photos from tonight
I would say I used a good amount of liquid. I actually dont think you can use too much. You want it to be able to move on the screen until it fits just perfect.

I found a case that actually is working with the PhantomSkinz screen protector. It's the TORRAS Galaxy Note 9 Case, Crystal Clear Ultra Thin Slim Fit Soft TPU Gel Case Cover on Amazon.
Every case works with the case friendly phantomskinz... What do you mean? Are you using the non case friendly?
Yes. I'm using the full screen version and the case I copied does not cause lifting and is thin. However, it is a bit slick
Case friendly, for note 9 and a LG V30. Both had corners coming up. Waiting on a new set I ordered to follow up. Seems the sides are fine , but might be the height that is the issue. Spigen and UAG and Samsung cases were all tried.
Should have the next set over the weekend , so will follow up then.

Well, final verdict, case friendly it is not. This is after 30 hours of dry time and the phone not being used. Spigen liquid crystal case and the UAG Monarch had the same results. I ordered 2 more to test and see, and this is the results. Really was hoping these would work, the spen feel is good. But still not quite cut right for a case. In total, I tried 4 different screensavers from Phantom Skinz , and all peeled on the edges after 24 hours of dry time .
Back to being naked....

Using the "Ultra clear screen (case friendly)" and have installed 4 total sp's on note 9 and 2 on lg V30, and had the same results. Tested with UAG and Spigen cases , which are common and not rare. I also used the Samsung tough case as well. All peeled, after allowing time to dry. Maybe I have bad luck, or the cut is just a little too close. The tops and sides seem to be right , just a little bit of each corner goes far enough out to be rubbed by what I would consider most common cases.
