Don't get me wrong, I love my WM phone, especially it has so many software + easier to program. However, I found the softwares are not organized and you need to know:
1. where to find the software
2. how to download the software
3. how to install the software from the desktop to the WM device
in order to use a piece of WM software(Not to mentions the serial number, registration number and so)
Where as the iphone "installer", only needed a few click and the software is automationally installed and ready to work. Which allow the Not so hardcore computer user to enjoy software written for iphone. For the Non jailbreaked iphone / ipod touch, iTunes is doing the software distribution work but nothing similar for the WM device.
thats because apple "control" their platform sooo much more
wm everybody can do it the way the like or feel is best
if people pref to do stuff one way it's up to them
and if customors hate that way they can turn to other options
which does it the way they like
imho wanting the general platform to dictate a way to do such things
maybe easier for some
but removes liberties from many more
no, don't get me wrong, I don't want to see an "iTunes" for the WM, that's why I said installer. Anyone can add their software to the installer software list, u know?

Do you mean some sort of web-based list of applications that you can access via ppc to download applications to install?
iTunes
iTunes may sound like a bad idea, but then again it would be nice to be able to download most games/programs etc. from one place/program, instead of searching all over the 'net for good links.
--oh, and yes I've been registered since 2006 and this IS my first post. Guess I've more to learn than to teach
That sound's like a really good idea. It be it's own application (like the Facebook application, just a portal to a website), and have applications categorized by type, number of downloads, new release, etc. Each application could also have reviews, description, screenshots, latest release, bug fixes, etc. I could host it on my server if needed.

Well, it could be a native WM app that download a list of APP Name, Description and Location from the web or it could be a website. However if it is a website, it will be just a duplication of Pocketgear and Handango.
So you want an app that will supply you with all the list of apps available?? Maybe just me, but that sounds lazy, and there are far too many out there, where, as mentioned above, most are through Apple direct. The best thing is Handago's In-Hand, allows you to browse and purchase some software from there site.

Two reasons for me not to vote for Handago or alike:
1. slow > in order to find the app that I needed, I need to go though all the pages (and ad.) which takes all the time and Date limit (not everybody has unlimited data plan)
2. PIE is not powerful enough to load these APP catalog website, so user still have to download through the desktop computer and go through all the steps that I described on the first post.
we only need to download some WM app, not the ad. or other unless graphics on the website, right?
Hi,
I would like to change my current phone (ZTE Blade with Android 2.3). I am not to happy with the phone and not to happy with Android either. I got iPad1 but I am not a big fan of iOS as well.
All Windows Phone devices looks cool and prices for decent model are not as high as for iPhone. Unfortunately WP is very unpopular and since none of my friends got one there is no way I can find out few things about it.
Perhaps you will be kind enough to answer my questions?
1. On iOS there is no problem in getting apps from different markets. I live in Poland but with VPN service I got access to NBC, ABC, Hulu, etc. Getting an app is simple - you just switch iTunes account and as long as US or UK app is free I can download it without problem.
Android is a bit more difficult... had to root the phone (with some help) and for stuff like that I need to look in the internet no in Google Play shop.
As far as I know WP requires Live ID and this determines what is available to us. Switching Live ID's = hard reset :-(
So, question is: can I get (and how difficult is it) apps from US and UK markets to my phone?
If answer to Q1 is YES (with some details, please ) - than:
2. Will it work on any WP device or (like wit Android phones) some of them are "no go" in this area?
3. Does WP has a VPN client/support?
4. How features like above will or do influence Windows 8? Both WP & Win8 would be a great tandem but from what I know it looks that MS will try to "lock" both in order to make cash on appstore. Is this correct?
5. One more thing, is it possible to use WP device as GSM router for other devices (like in Android phones)?
Hi,
Some short answers here too
Your phone out of the box with your live id can't download/install apps from other marketplaces. It is possible to sideload apps, but I haven't done it so far, 'cause in Germany and for me I found everything needed. Don't know how the situation in Poland looks like.
WP7 does not support VPN. VPN will come in WP8, as Microsoft said in some dev blogs.
MS won't lock W8 to the new store. But you have to differ between W8 x86 and W8 RT (ARM). W8 RT will - I suppose - have some sort of lock like WP7 (and possibly WP8).
Yes, it's called Internet Connection Sharing, but it is not enabled on all devices. It depends on the device manufacturer. WP7 is able to share the connection, but if the manufacturer don't want the device to do it or maybe they want to save money in the development of the device ( ) you can't to it without some little hacking.
Does any one knows... if I will buy let say Lumia 800 in Poland, will I be able to:
- connect to the VPN service I am using?
- install Netflix (US market only)
- install Hulu + (as above)
- install BBC iPlayer (UK market only)
- usie the phone as mobile router
Where do I look for info. - how to do it?
The only current way to VPN on WP7 is to connect to a network that is already using a VPN (WiFi, such as by Internet Connection Sharing from your PC, or by plugging in the phone to the PC and running the Zune software, which will create an Ethernet-over-USB network for the phone).
I can't say for sure about the Marketplace access. It will depend on your credit card, your Microsoft account, and your VPN (if you use one), and possibly even your mobile operator.
Sharing the phone's Internet connection is a supported WP7 feature, but I'm not sure if the Lumia 800 supports it yet. The feature is called "Internet Sharing" and is in the Settings hub. It's available on all Samsung Windows phones, and I think on all HTCs too. Not sure if it's on the Lumias yet, but Nokia has said they were working on it some time ago. Note that if your carrier blocks or requires payment for this service (sharing the cellular Internet connection), the phone will block the feature until you comply. There are hacks to work around that restriction entirely, but those hacks are only currently possible on Samsung, HTC gen1, LG, Lumia 710, and a few Lumia 800 phones.
Thanks for your answer.
As much as I would love to dump Android - I simply can not :-(.
Hi All,
I'm new to the android and I'm wondering how applications which are also kind of social web based apps works and how do you approach developing something like that.
For instance zedge.net which is wallpapers, ringtones application / website. On the one end you have application on your android but on the other end you have website with your own account synch. with your android etc.
I'm just wondering if there are any supporting libraries / environments allowing one developer think of developing similar solutions like zedge.net. Not necessary exact the same but with similar android application (client) and website (server) architecture ?
Any tips much appreciated.
thanks
Evo
Hi,
I have some doubts and do not know how to do, maybe you can help me.
so, I need to communicate between two different android apps on different devices.
Case study: i have tablet1 with app1 and tablet2 with app2 on a local network. I need app1 on tablet1 send and receive data to/from app2 on tablet2. So its a client/server communication (or better, i need many clients to one server).
There is a mechanism AIDL but only works different apps on same device, but i need on different devices. I have done some examples of services and messengers handler but without success. Applications must be version 4.0 and android app ( I say this because there is a NSD mechanism that discover services of other devices / apps android in local networks, but the minimum version is 4.1 and I already have several customers with tablet v4.0. I know it is possible but also do not want to install a web server on a tablet ( like a KWS or PAW server and others) ).
The documentation and examples that i use are google android site, like trainning, guide, references and others.
Thanks in advance for any tips.
Samsung's Z1 expected to drop tomorrow, will run Tizen as the default OS, but will be capable of running android apps from day one. Hopefully this will also come to the Tizen operated Gear series watches.

I hope so too. At least maybe we can sideload acl if we can get a dump of the acl app?
I made a similar thread in the galaxy gear forums http://forum.xda-developers.com/gal...oid-apps-tizen-z1-acl-how-gear-tizen-t3002154
Haven't had any responses yet though.
We need someone with a Z1 to try and rip ACL (assuming it's free. I don't promote warez distribution). Alternately if ACL is built into the firmware we might be able to extract it from a firmware dump (but the articles I've read seem to indicate that it is not built in but needs to be installed from the tizen store and we can't access the tizen store without a Z1.)
