Battery drain on every Custom ROM - OnePlus 7 Pro Questions & Answers

Hi there,
I wanted to switch to Custom ROM from Oxygen OS, so I downloaded RR first. Installed, all went smooth, went to bed with phone charged to 100%. Woke up, 66%. Jeez.
Then I switched to crDroid, same issue, LineageOS, same issue. I'm thinking it's the Ambient Display option since I really wanted to use this, however, this battery drain in standby is killing me. Is it really this unoptimized, or am I doing something wrong?
FYI, before this, last time I had touch with Custom ROMs and root was 7 years ago when I owned Galaxy S3, so I'm not sure what's going on here.
Thanks

This is a common issue with custom roms. If you are rooted, you can try underclocking, thus saving battery. Or you can use apps like tasker to toggle unnecessary battery draining features. It's always a give and take. If that's your daily driver, it's better to have the official rom.

[Q] Verizon S3 w/ CM 10 Battery Issues

Hello,
I got my (Verizon) Samsung Galaxy S3 two days ago, and rooted and flashed it with the CM 10 Nightly builds after a couple of hours of using touchwiz. Everyone has been saying that they are getting more out of their battery with CM 10, but my experience hasn't been too good. I am getting maybe 9 hours of battery with normal use. When I got the phone I run it down to 10%, turned it off and then charged it back to 100%.
I have turned off 4gb (as I don;t have no real 4g signal around me), have the display on the lowest setting and have even under clocked it to 1.2ghz and it's still draining fast.
I have been reading through some forum threads and there are people with the same issue as me, some say they think it’s a faulty battery so they ordered a new battery but never post back there results.
Others say that doing a reset of the phone/reflashing CM 10 does the trick.
I have also experience my phone getting warm to the touch when just checking facebook or web browsing. My phone core seems to be running at 90-95 Fahrenheit when it feels warm and have never seen it go above 100.
I’m open to resetting my phone, but as I have just set up everything, I would rather not to.
I know this is a lot of information, but any advice at all would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

a few things.
if youre running a launcher some allow you to backup your homescreen settings, even the free versions
i have never gotten that bad of battery life out of a CM10 rom. Your screen on time is a more reliable idicator of your battery health than hours of use. the hours of use statistic is easy to manipulate
run better battery stats to find any wakelocks you may have to see whats eating your battery.
Re
Thanks for the quick reply!
I'm not sure it's an app that's causing this, as I didn't install anything on the phone once I rooted it for a couple of hours and it was still draining fast.
I have gotten the betterbatterystats app and will post what I find out.
I am also not getting the best battery life. I am on paranoidroid 2.52. I had the phone fully charged, screen on watching a video in skyfire. I did not make 3 hours. Is this what others are getting?
Battery issue
You probably all know this already but the screen brightness level also effects the battery a lot. I set mine to auto.
I'm wondering if you flashed your radio and rpm to the latest leaked jb

serious battery drain with screen on

Hi all!
i got a oneplus one since about a week but i'm facing a serious battery drain problem. I bought my phone used with 5 months of life and used only a few times so its conditions are like brand new. When i first got the phone i installed cm12.1 nightlies but two or three days ago i switched to the last version of cm12s. Anyway, in both cases i have the same problem:
When i use the phone with the screen on the battery level lowers so fast, about 1% per 1 minute and half. During sleep instead drain seems to be normal. I don't have so much app installed and i usually take blocked with servicely or greenify the ones with services that i don't use often. Also have auto brightness to medium levels and i do normal use (generally navigation on chrome since this morning, no games at all).
Anyway, plugged off this morning at 9:00, now at 14:00 i have 20% of charge with 1 hour and 35 minutes of SOT.
The old owner told me that he didn't use the phone for about 2 months before selling it, so i'm trying to recalibrate the battery (discharge until it turns off, then charge to 100% with phone turned off), but situation doesn't seems to get better. Do you know if it is a well known problem or it is an hardware fault? Can you help me?
Thank you in advance and sorry if my english is not perfect

Have you tried other custom rom? What about stock ROM? If all ROM gives you similar issues, how about your firmware? Is it up to date? If all this doesn't work, you might have a faulty battery :silly:
Hi Bobbi, thank you for your answer! I tried cm12.1 nightlies for one or two days before and I had similar problems. Isn't the cyanogen 12s actually the stock rom for this phone? And what you mean with updating the firmware? I have downloaded cm12s here in xda, wiped all and then flashed it, isn't in this way all up to date?

CM12s and OxygenOS are both considered the stock ROM of this device (I guess ) but some others (like mine) comes shipped with ColorOS as the stock rom
But nonetheless and that aside, flashing CM12s and updating the firmware is a bit different. Most ROM doesn't pack with firmware except for OxygenOS and CM12.1 nightlies

New user - Kernel on Stock CM

Howdy folks,
New OnePlus One user, coming from a Galaxy S3 after years of holding out on an upgrade.
Looking to keep the phone reasonably stock for now (although some of those custom ROMs sure look tempting!) so I've decided to stick with CM12 (which is what I believe it came loaded with) until the OTA to CM13.
But I'm finding the battery life a bit tough to swallow - I'm getting about 60-80 minutes SOT with a total battery life of about 8-9 hours (email checks, browsing the web 3-4 times a day, one GPS check daily) before I hit 5%. Ideally I'd like to have 100-120 minutes SOT with a total battery life of 16-18 hours before I have to charge.
So I'm thinking an underclocked kernel may be the way to go. Problem is - I'm not sure which kernel is even compatible with CM12 at this point, or what would fit my needs, as everyone seems to have moved on to CM13 already, and I'll be honest with you all - I feel lost.
Can anyone suggest a path to better battery life through kernel?
Thanks in advance!
Go back to CM11S. 8 hours sot on Wi-Fi, slightly less on mobile data. No new features are worth the crippled battery life. All roms after 4.4, both custom and official are plagued by the mobile radio active bug and it hasn't been fixed yet. So stick to 4.4 stock and you will get mind-numbing battery life.

Thanks for the advice, but I'm looking to try an underclocked kernel first on CM12 before I downgrade. Besides, with CM13 around the corner that should help with battery life, no?

underclocking doest do anything when the phone itself doesnt sleep. I'm on CM13 nightlies and doze doesnt work half the time, the other half battery drain is just insane from all kinds of sources (Cyanogen System and mobile radio active). I've had this phone for a year and a half now and I've tried all the roms and kernels one can try but nothing so far has come even close to any 4.4 rom. Again, if you want the newest features and don't give a damn about battery life over extended periods, if you don't spent more than 4~ hours per day staring into your phone, if you charge daily, go for any rom you want. If you want a dependable phone that could keep you going for even 4~ days on a single charge with moderate usage (messages, light browsing, bit of gps) then go for a 4.4 rom. Preferably stock CM11S.

Okay, thank you for your input. Doesn't really answer what I'm looking for, but I guess I'll keep it in mind.
Update - decided to stray from stock and loaded Sultan's CM12 ROM - currently have 3.5 hours SOT and 20 hours total with 40% left. That's good for me!

besides stock EUI rom, AOKP MM has the best battery life and stability. only downside is bluetooth audio does not work. im testing out MIUI 8 but battery does not seem that good.

My Le1S displays the same erratic battery behaviour...It all started after the 19s update...Don't know whether it was a coincidence and if I have a software or hardware issue...Battery charged to 100% - would then drop to 40% within a few hours - then jump to 20% in another 1 hour - and then would start discharging at the rate of 1% every second and finally shut down...I tried every battery calibration method mentioned on this forum; did a factory reset numerous times; nothing helped...
For long, I've been thinking of downgrading to EUI 14s using one of the links in the Leeco forum...Am even thinking of flashing the 23s chinese version another link...
This was a beautiful when I had bought it...Not sure why things took such a downturn that now it has become a nightmare...I literally have to keep it connected to a charger most of the time...Pls let me know if you find a solution for this issue and if a battery change helps you...If nothing works, I am planning to move to the Redmi Note 4 soon...
The issues come from the source used i believe. Every nougat rom has battery drain. Every non-EUI based marshmallow rom has bt audio issue. Don't know issues with lollipop ones. EUI roms i have used all have this notifications issue, sometimes phone wont receive any even if every battery saving feature is disabled.
Best marshmallow roms for those who don't care about Bluetooth audio, AOKP and AICP. I would gladly go back to EUI, even miui or flyme, without those notifications and Bluetooth issues.
Use the CM 13 ROM (either LOS 13 from the xda forum or the cm 13 by bule from bbs.ydss.cn) which gives the best standby time even with all apps running in the night the battery drain is about 1 to 3% all night. I use the eui 26s rom which battery backup is also good I have no issue like you mentioned.

Insane battery drain despite different roms

I've tried stock 5.2 and different roms. Even in TWRP I find the battery is draining insanely quick. I charged it up to 100% and when I went into TWRP, wiped everything and installed Lineage OS and gapps, it dropped about 5%. At this point I'm not sure if the battery is just basically on its last legs from being on 5.3 for so long. Does anyone have any suggestions? Something else I can try flashing to see if it fixes the insane battery drain? I'm considering just selling the thing off and buying something else, but would want to try and salvage this thing if I can.

Flashing a ROM and starting it up (and installing apps) uses a lot of processor power, and therefore a lot of battery. A 5% drop flashing a ROM and starting it the first time would be completely expected. After flashing a new ROM I would recommend you use it for a day or so(drain battery to almost empty) and recharge; to let the ROM "settle in" and the battery meter to calibrate. Do this before passing any judgment on battery.
Severe battery drain has been a consistent issue on all stock Nougat builds. But I can't speak for Lineage, as I only run stock ROM (rooted). But it's an OS issue, not a battery issue. The worst case, if downgrade to Marshmallow, and it should fix the battery drain.
