Whatsapp data files - Help :( - General Questions and Answers

Hello! I have a question about Whatsapp data files, I could really use your help.
I believe this is entirely my fault but I still want to ask, maybe there is a way to fix it?
So here’s my situation, I have a Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 pro. The phone includes an option to do a deep clean and there is also a Whatsapp cleaner. It recommended me to delete the data files and I read online that there wouldn’t be an issue if I did that, so I did it.
I noticed my conversations were intact, but every image or audio file I sent were not available anymore. Inside any chat conversation I’d have to individually download images or voice notes sent to me and they were there. I was like, okay at least they still exist.
This is the weird part, I didn't want to download each file individually and while deciding what to do, my phone created a new backup at 2am, then I decided to Uninstall and Re-Install Whatsapp, based on what I read online. The problem it’s even worst now because I can’t even download previous voice notes or images from my contacts, like I was able to just a few hours ago. It says something like Sorry can’t download this right now, please try again later.
Is there a way I can get these back? I have very important voice notes that were sent to me that I don’t want to loose, also family pictures. I know it's a long shot, but there HAS to be a way, pleeeeeeeeeease. Give me at least 1% of hope!!
Thanks so much for your help!

[Request] Chrome to phone-like app for finding phone

Hi guys!
I know there is a way to create a Chrome extension which, when clicked, launches an app on the phone that vibrates the phone and plays a sound file at the loudest volume, so I can find it. Like Chrome to phone but with a different purpose.
This would be a great app for those times when you need to go but just can't find your phone even though you know it is somewhere in the home. With just the press of a button you could hear (or feel, if it's very close to you) where it is! No need to use another phone to call yours or run around the apartment getting all tired and angry!
Personally I would have used it like eight times since I came up with the idea, but I don't know Android programming or HTML (for the extension) so I can't create it myself.
where's my droid
and a couple of other apps already do this. They take a sms message and crank up the volume.

That's great for some people (with unlimited SMS), but unfortunately I haven't got unlimited SMS (nor do I always have access to a second phone. If I did though I would probably call my phone instead as this request is for finding the phone when you know it is somewhere near but don't have the patience to run around and search for it)
The app I want doesn't use SMS messages for launching the app but the Cloud-to-device service introduced with Android 2.2 and at the moment only available to a small but growing number of devices.
I use the Chrome to phone app & ext (code dot google dot com/p/chrometophone) on my Nexus and although it doesn't work every time when it does work it feels like magic!
I thought it would feel as much if not even more like magic if you could use this new service to find your phone with ease. I don't need it to have all the (for some) great features like showing where the phone is on a Google map or wiping important data if it's lost, I've got other apps for that.
I want this app to be as simple as it possibly can be, again like Chrome to phone:
Setting up: Download, Register phone, Be logged into Google account, done!
Use: Be logged into Google account, click extension button, wait a sec, phone rings, done!
Now does anyone here know how to create this app or where to request it to increase the chances of it getting past the idea stage and into something usable? It would surely make my day!

[Q] Deleting LARGE sms threads. Help!

So, I have a problem.
Sometime last year I got in the habit of backing up all my text messages with Titanium and restoring them across all the roms I flash. I have a Verizon Galaxy S4 now, but some of these texts are from back when I had my S3. So I have been restoring some of the same sms threads for almost a year now. There are alot of people that I text work related stuff to every night, and it's nice to be able to look back and see previous messages, as alot of the threads have pertinent information. Most of them aren't that large but there is one that I really want to delete (from my ex girlfriend) that was about 5 months worth of messages, almost 4500 texts that I really want to delete as it is just taking up space and there is no reason for it to be there. I use Go Sms Pro as my texting app and it works great for me.
So I thought nothing of just going in there long-pressing the thread and hitting delete. But all it did was hang with a prompt "deleting.." for about an hour, then froze and force closed. And when I rebooted the damn thread was STILL there. Every last message. So of course I tried the stock Samsung messaging app next, it did the same thing. Hang for a loooooong time then froze and force closed. Then I tried Super SMS quick delete off the play store. Also no dice.
Now I know I could just wipe/reflash and start from scratch on Text messages but I really don't wanna do that. Like I said, there is important information in some of the threads that I really don't wanna lose.
I know that messages are stored here: ./dbdata/databases/com.android.providers.telephony/mmssms.db
./data/data/com.jb.gosms/databases/gommssms.db but is there anyway I can edit that database to delete those? Or something else?
So can anyone advise me on this? I am a reasonably well-acquainted Android power user and can use adb well and follow directions.
I did do quite a bit of googling and found lots of people with the same problem and no solution.
I also searched through quite a few threads here on XDA but they were all two to three years old and not much in the way of solutions either.
Some help here anybody?

with Nexus 5 & new to Android Ecosystem, need suggestion

With a heavy heart i have to keep my SEx1 aside and have entered to Android Ecosystem.
I'm a customized freak & made my X1 ROM super stable with my super minimalistic custom rom's, im still going to use that as my primary portable music gear, but for rest of the things Google Nexus 5 is the new companion.
Kitkat is whole new world for me, used gingerbread a a little bit but both are poles apart. hence need some suggestion to keep myself educated with latest trends and tech. Please ignore my noobe-tagged question. So here i start:
No Lollipop ? ?
As broadcasted nexus devices should be the first one to get Android 5.0, Lollipop.
Im yet to get any update & currently running 4.4.4. Any words on when could i expect Lollipop upgrade in my device.
[I don't want to root/ flash until my device is out of warranty].
Contact Backup & Google sync:
a) When starting the device for first time, it prompted me to use google account credential, i did, and it dumped all thousands of my gmail contact in phonebook. Too bad. i have manually deleted all of them from phonebook. and switched-off auto sync.
b) it refused to sync my contact form X1, which was back uped in outlook under win7. Found an alternative, transfered all my contact via bluetooth to nexus 5 and imported them one-by-one. Again when importing in batches, it gives error, which is kind of helpful for me. I only imported selected contact and not the obsolete 8 yrs old contacts
Now the question: How my Sync my contacts without downloading email-contact from gmail. Another gmail account doesn't seems to be ideal as i use email, calendar, drive from this mail. Please suggest.
Customization:
a) I like to keep my phone at minimals. used mycolorscreen- Themer for few days, which let me customize to what i want till great extent. but its getting corrupt by it own at random times, spoiling my widgets location & functionalities and sometime replacing wallpaper with "black" and have uninstalled it now.
Do we have anything similar to HTC / touchflow full screen animated weather for android? roa any alternative to themer which let me customize N5?
b) Lockscreen customization like changing the background according to themer wallpaper and add few information like battery level, weather, etc. I goggled DashClock please let me know what you guys think about it or any other recommendation.
Few App recommendation
Fitness tracker : currently using Pedometer by j4velin, which is good, but it doesn't give me much control, no difference in distance covered if you running or walking, no actual track of distance covered as it derived from the stride length we enter in the setting. Any recommendation in this please ? should i try Google fit app ?
Pulse Light Controller N5 seriously missing "things" in this department, apart from default white glow of unleaded sms, i never noticed any other indication. they should have provided a notification for low-battery and missed call. Currently using Light Flow but i hate its presence always in my notification area. what's XDA's thoughts in this please? I dont need anything with bells and whistles, just a minimal app which show me red light when my battery is low & some other-then-white-color from unreaded SMS & missed calls.
Vibrate on call connect Got ExDailer but im clueless how to make it the default dialer. Also i liked the stock dialer is there any way to make it vibrate when a call connects, i have to install 3rd party app on my phone
Cache cleaner
as im playing installing, uninstalling lots of stuffs these in these experimenal days what would be a recommended app for this, if its mandatory. have used this bloatware Clean Master in my X10i earlier which killed the phone in multiple ways. any other recommendation please, i just want to clean junk files and do not want any antivirus and gold plating.
Thanks in advance.

OTAs are a rollout. They don't give it to everyone at the same time.
You can sideload the OTA instead of waiting, and you don't have to unlock the bootloader for that.
There is also no point in "keeping warranty" since the only way to tell is if you have bootloader unlocked/or tamper flag is left triggered. Bootloader is easily re-locked and the tamper flag isn't that big of a deal to reset unlike on many other devices (you can do it with apps lol..). There is no other way to tell unless you blatantly have modified software. Of course, if the device was defective to the point where it doesn't boot up, then the bootloader/tamper flag/any sort of software doesn't even matter anyways. Also, if you bought from the Play Store, Google will even let you send it in with a custom ROM and kernel if you wanted to.

Mass delete your obsolete contacts from gmail: https://www.google.com/contacts/ then sync them afterwards.

I don't use fitness trackers so I can't say anything about them. The Nexus 5 has a hardware pedometer rather than using sensors like accelerometer/gps/etc to determine steps, which saves a LOT of battery but obviously can't determine distance.
There are a multilude of LED apps.
Cache cleaners are useless since you can wipe cache in recovery anyways, including stock recovery. If you mean for cleaning in general, I don't use anything myself as I don't find it any necessary, but some others do.

Are far as this is concerned, there really isn't any big thing with the Nexus 5 that would not be applicable to other phones. Just read around the forums to see if anything piques your interest.
Thanks for the reply.
I will wait some more time for official OTA update, in the meantime exploring the device. once i done i will do a factory reset anyways
contact things is easier to manage in Gmail interface, thanks for pointing out. Took hours to clean all the contact, but feel good after housecleaning

Why WhatsApp is TERRIBLE

I've been wanting to write this article somewhere for a while now since WhatsApp is pissing me off all the freaking time. This thread is gonna seem really toxic so prepare yourself for some criticism. I'm not exaggerating, just a few minutes ago WhatsApp wipes everything for no reason, probably because I'm low on storage. Speaking of storage, let's hop right into the first argument.
No SD-card support
WhatsApp stores all the media and messages on internal storage. Facebook has had ages to figure this out but still they're more interested in making money off of innocent users and adding ripped-off features like stories, that honestly nobody freaking uses.
You need a phone and number
You need a phone with a SIM card to use WhatsApp. Of course many people have this but it's still really restricting. This also means you can't message people without sharing your number, which you don't want some people having.
Messages are stored offline
Messages are stored on one phone and that's really insecure. This also leads to many other disadvantages below.
Only one phone
WhatsApp is not cross-platform compatible. It only works with one phone and WhatsApp web needs to be connected to that phone. WhatsApp web sucks so hard because it doesn't work more than half of the time. You can't use just a desktop or tablet.
Switching devices is near impossible
If you want to transfer your messages to another device it's damn near impossible. You need to make a backup than reinstall WhatsApp and load the backup and... uuaghhh it's just so goddamn badly designed. The backup process is bad as well.
Facebook.
WhatsApp is owned by Facebook and I don't have to say more than that to tell you about privacy.
Development
WhatsApp doesn't get anymore significant improvements because it already has the majority of the users and Facebook isn't scared of losing them to other messengers, so it isn't worth developing to them.
It ruins image and video quality
WhatsApp down-scales the resolution and quality of media you send and there's no way to turn that off. It's so bloody annoying when you're sharing images or video for something important.
The emojis look like crap
WhatsApp, even on Android, replaces your own emojis with the stock Apple ones, which look horribly outdated. You can go out of your way to install a new emoji font on your device and WhatsApp still ruins them all.
WhatsApp pales in comparison to Discord or an open-source app like Telegram. But despite all these flaws it still has most of the users. It's just too hard to switch because then everyone would have to switch with is really hard to accomplish. I really hope you hate WhatsApp more now and go install Discord.

1. You're on xda, you can surely find a way to move its data to SD if it matters to you THAT much.
2. Telegram f.e. requires a number aswell, but you can setup a username to avoid others getting your number. However, you can openly look-up a username and pretty much get annoyed anyway.
3. Either you're ignorant or haven't bothered at all. There's a VERY OBVIOUS "Backup data to Google Drive" option to save you're chats in your own GDrive.
4. Why would you want that? If you'ge got it setup, why even want the same account on another platform at the same time.
5. Look at Point 3 concering backup and restoring messages/ chats.
6. Facebook hasn't bothered WhatsApp that much and left it working on its own. Don't know what you're on about or I'm missing something.
7. WhatsApp is receiving updates and "stability" updates. I put it in quotes because that's subjective, sometimes IMHO they mess up and break other functions. Please state any "significant improvement" you're missing.
8. For important file sharing you can use a dedicated service. Also the downscaling isn't as bad (on a Note8), images sent by me are just fine on the other user.
9. Subjective. I don't like them either, but you can't be bothered too much by it.
TL;DR:
I'm not sure why you're against WhatsApp but whatever floats your boat.
The list above commenting your points are just my views, not backing up WhatsApp.

1. You're right but it's annoying as hell.
2. Yes but at least you can use telegram in your browser without your phone being connected. And Discord has direct messaging
3. Yeah I know and I backup regularly but you have to uninstall the app and install it again if you want to load a backup which is really stupid.
4. Because typing on a keyboard is easier and when I'm on my PC I don't wanna have to take out my phone.
6. Facebook knows al lot more about you than you think.
7. It's just that they can't live up to a tiny thing like telegram when Facebook has millions of dollars.
8. Yes I know but bothering other people to use google drive for sending an image is pretty annoying to them.
9. Then went out of their way to ruin the emojis and force us to use theirs.

To be honest there is nothing better to which you can compare though, so why complaining? Just don't use it no?

just to prevent other people use it
but actually I partly agree with op, I usually use telegram more often than watsapp
What I really hate about Whatsapp is fuc**** Whatsapp Web functionality. They are not fixing Image quality issue as well. Unfortunately, there is no better chat app available.
I quit using it awhile ago, and have been using telegram instead....

Totally agree. I used Whatsapp a lot, so I know that there are certain pros and cons.
Though because almost 12 hours working with PC/laptop, I prefer using desktop client version for Telegram. IMO, it's more user friendly and have better sync when it comes to sharing files between the desktop version and the mobile app. I'm not sure, but it seems to me it's less consuming than desktop Whatsapp, have you tried it? I have an old PC which works sluggish, and it showed slightly better performance.
Biggest issue is cross platform backup.
I cant figure out how to transfer whatsapp data from ios to android.
Ios forces you to backup whatsapp to icloud ugh.
it is not so bad
I don't know, for me it is not so bad, and it can videocalls (unlike telegram for example), and also you can use some alternative like viber if you want ). for example in my country viber is more popular, and in viber you can delete your message for both you and your contact

When using WhatApp on your phone, If you send a image or video that has a file size that is less than 100 Megabytes as a "Document" attachment, then the quality of the image or video file will not be reduced. To do this do the following:
1. In the chat window, click on the "paperclip icon" at the bottom of the screen.
2. Then click on "Documents".
3. And then click on "Browse other docs...".
4. Navigate to the file you want to send and then tap on it, and then tap on "SEND".
5. The file will now be sent in it's original form without any compression.

Yeah but it's a pain in the ass and doesn't embed. I've found out about GBWhatsApp since already

WhatsApp data 30gb, got stuck 12 hrs cleaning a group, is normal?

My whatsapp was lagging a lot, I had a lot of groups.
I tried to delete some backup data, after I deleted videos, don't know why kept saying 30 GIGAS.
So I tried to clean 6 groups and got stuck for more than 12 hours.
Uninstalled what's and restored by the crypto14, but still saying 30 gb
When I try to clear one chat group, takes forever, starts saying deleting 100/89450 messages and after some time start again but says like 300/53820 and keep like that forever, what am doing wrong? Thank you
Using WhatsApp is what you're doing wrong.
30gb? You joking me? Get that junkware off the phone.
I can't, have some important conversation, I don't mind the medias or photo, but need to figure out how restore just the chat (or clean some groups because when I try got stuck, even if I try one buy one)

Don't know. I wouldn't invest that kind of time or resources in that site. I have zero presence there.
It's not a secure platform in part because it's a magnet for people with nefarious agendas. It will be hacked. Never install anything from off that site... never. All social media and shopping apps should be accessed through a good secure browser only.
