Why WhatsApp is TERRIBLE - General Topics

I've been wanting to write this article somewhere for a while now since WhatsApp is pissing me off all the freaking time. This thread is gonna seem really toxic so prepare yourself for some criticism. I'm not exaggerating, just a few minutes ago WhatsApp wipes everything for no reason, probably because I'm low on storage. Speaking of storage, let's hop right into the first argument.
No SD-card support
WhatsApp stores all the media and messages on internal storage. Facebook has had ages to figure this out but still they're more interested in making money off of innocent users and adding ripped-off features like stories, that honestly nobody freaking uses.
You need a phone and number
You need a phone with a SIM card to use WhatsApp. Of course many people have this but it's still really restricting. This also means you can't message people without sharing your number, which you don't want some people having.
Messages are stored offline
Messages are stored on one phone and that's really insecure. This also leads to many other disadvantages below.
Only one phone
WhatsApp is not cross-platform compatible. It only works with one phone and WhatsApp web needs to be connected to that phone. WhatsApp web sucks so hard because it doesn't work more than half of the time. You can't use just a desktop or tablet.
Switching devices is near impossible
If you want to transfer your messages to another device it's damn near impossible. You need to make a backup than reinstall WhatsApp and load the backup and... uuaghhh it's just so goddamn badly designed. The backup process is bad as well.
Facebook.
WhatsApp is owned by Facebook and I don't have to say more than that to tell you about privacy.
Development
WhatsApp doesn't get anymore significant improvements because it already has the majority of the users and Facebook isn't scared of losing them to other messengers, so it isn't worth developing to them.
It ruins image and video quality
WhatsApp down-scales the resolution and quality of media you send and there's no way to turn that off. It's so bloody annoying when you're sharing images or video for something important.
The emojis look like crap
WhatsApp, even on Android, replaces your own emojis with the stock Apple ones, which look horribly outdated. You can go out of your way to install a new emoji font on your device and WhatsApp still ruins them all.
WhatsApp pales in comparison to Discord or an open-source app like Telegram. But despite all these flaws it still has most of the users. It's just too hard to switch because then everyone would have to switch with is really hard to accomplish. I really hope you hate WhatsApp more now and go install Discord.

1. You're on xda, you can surely find a way to move its data to SD if it matters to you THAT much.
2. Telegram f.e. requires a number aswell, but you can setup a username to avoid others getting your number. However, you can openly look-up a username and pretty much get annoyed anyway.
3. Either you're ignorant or haven't bothered at all. There's a VERY OBVIOUS "Backup data to Google Drive" option to save you're chats in your own GDrive.
4. Why would you want that? If you'ge got it setup, why even want the same account on another platform at the same time.
5. Look at Point 3 concering backup and restoring messages/ chats.
6. Facebook hasn't bothered WhatsApp that much and left it working on its own. Don't know what you're on about or I'm missing something.
7. WhatsApp is receiving updates and "stability" updates. I put it in quotes because that's subjective, sometimes IMHO they mess up and break other functions. Please state any "significant improvement" you're missing.
8. For important file sharing you can use a dedicated service. Also the downscaling isn't as bad (on a Note8), images sent by me are just fine on the other user.
9. Subjective. I don't like them either, but you can't be bothered too much by it.
TL;DR:
I'm not sure why you're against WhatsApp but whatever floats your boat.
The list above commenting your points are just my views, not backing up WhatsApp.

No point posting this on a hacking forum that is not affiliated with whatsapp in any way

If I posted it on the whatsapp forum they'd surely remove it. I just needed a place to rant and reddit didn't seem right to me.

1. You're right but it's annoying as hell.
2. Yes but at least you can use telegram in your browser without your phone being connected. And Discord has direct messaging
3. Yeah I know and I backup regularly but you have to uninstall the app and install it again if you want to load a backup which is really stupid.
4. Because typing on a keyboard is easier and when I'm on my PC I don't wanna have to take out my phone.
6. Facebook knows al lot more about you than you think.
7. It's just that they can't live up to a tiny thing like telegram when Facebook has millions of dollars.
8. Yes I know but bothering other people to use google drive for sending an image is pretty annoying to them.
9. Then went out of their way to ruin the emojis and force us to use theirs.

To be honest there is nothing better to which you can compare though, so why complaining? Just don't use it no?

just to prevent other people use it
but actually I partly agree with op, I usually use telegram more often than watsapp

What I really hate about Whatsapp is fuc**** Whatsapp Web functionality. They are not fixing Image quality issue as well. Unfortunately, there is no better chat app available.

I quit using it awhile ago, and have been using telegram instead....

Totally agree. I used Whatsapp a lot, so I know that there are certain pros and cons.
Though because almost 12 hours working with PC/laptop, I prefer using desktop client version for Telegram. IMO, it's more user friendly and have better sync when it comes to sharing files between the desktop version and the mobile app. I'm not sure, but it seems to me it's less consuming than desktop Whatsapp, have you tried it? I have an old PC which works sluggish, and it showed slightly better performance.

Biggest issue is cross platform backup.
I cant figure out how to transfer whatsapp data from ios to android.
Ios forces you to backup whatsapp to icloud ugh.

it is not so bad
I don't know, for me it is not so bad, and it can videocalls (unlike telegram for example), and also you can use some alternative like viber if you want ). for example in my country viber is more popular, and in viber you can delete your message for both you and your contact

When using WhatApp on your phone, If you send a image or video that has a file size that is less than 100 Megabytes as a "Document" attachment, then the quality of the image or video file will not be reduced. To do this do the following:
1. In the chat window, click on the "paperclip icon" at the bottom of the screen.
2. Then click on "Documents".
3. And then click on "Browse other docs...".
4. Navigate to the file you want to send and then tap on it, and then tap on "SEND".
5. The file will now be sent in it's original form without any compression.

you just beat me to posting it...looks good so far.
I almost got caught to facebook also but I had too many doubts. Here is a version of someones doubts... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7XhzYGoBif8
Do not forget that facebooks social side (the only side actually) is useful only if you use your real name. Otherways nobody wont find you. Now just think...
EDIT:...or let me explain. Basically, what goes there stays there. For start if you happen to get to a criminal side for genuine needs, cops would get loads of information about your relationships etc.
And the main point: facebook-A BIG mass of data from everyone. This might be the present or surely it will be the future: intelligent engines/robots to scan and analyze the mass of data accumulated there psychologically enough to make conclusions about geopolitical/social/mass-psychological preferences. And the kind of preferences we cannot think about even for now. The next move from there is agressive manipulation and big loss of freedom
yeah, works perfectly on my TD2 ;-)

Facebook just holds the information YOU provide, pretty simple. It is a VERY good way to stay in touch with old friends and relatives but of course it is a pretty open social network and you need to be careful with the information YOU provide. Facebook doesn't take or steal anything from you, it is up to YOU what kind of information and how much of it you provide for others to see. THAT simple. To make it short: just use your brain and Facebook can be a very nice place to enjoy.
Working for me
Works great so far on my TD2. Can't believe it took this long for microsoft to release a facebook app for windows mobile!!!
One down side though, still doesnt have flick scrolling which is a bit of a pain, hopefully they'll sort that out soon.

Yeah, but what about REAL names... thats enough for me
Off course facebook doesn't steal anything from me. It is just a container... a container which at some point contains data enough (even if you do not put there facts like home address etc, just your name which is a damn good fact) to get analyzed. And offcourse - not by facebook. Even chats and comments are enough at some point to compile a solid profile about you. Once again - they are related to REAL names.
I know it is hard to like this kind of theory when you already have a facebook account. My wife has a facebook account and I am seeing the mass of information streaming there. Besides the social side is so effective that you cannot get out of it anymore - it is a good extra communication platform.
BTW I have a plaxo account which has my outlook contact folders... I "can" delete the folders and account there but what about THEIR recycle bin for "archival" and "statistics" purposes... I'd love to get rid of it but I think there is no need to do it as it is too late already.
And I just received an emali from damn facebook which suggested me to sign up and showed the names of the people I know. How did the monster know my friends if I have been avoiding it

just like any other member networkin YOU sign up to it askes if theres anyone you would like to forward a membership request to! if your that worried about robots scanniny your comp to find all your details then jus dont have a comp or a bank account or anything dont even have a fone but its a decent app thnx

This app here might be as good as possible. No complaints about it.
uhh... I'll put it as short as I can: First: I am not worried about scanning my PC. I am worried about scanning the data on Facebook servers.
It contains your REAL name and your REAL activities. Please folks... try to imagine just a little bit. The scanner wouldn't be any data collector or single data unit detector (like bank account numbers, email etc). I am talking about intelligent scanner here. The one that uses sentence content detection/comparsion and linguistic variation approximating techniques in spite of the personality that is in the text. Face recognition is already there for us to use even. From this point scanner has already simplified data to deal with. Imagine this kind of scanner cooperating with psychologists who obey people with high political, economical - and if anybody is interested anymore about the old timer - MORAL authority. As time has told the ambitions of these people have almost never been sincere. A single facebook user most likely wouldn't be endangered. It is plurality that makes the effect

Same here. After keying in userid and password and tap on done. the app freezes.
After trial and error, i found out that its the files used by the previous version that's causing the lockup.
Try uninstall the facebook app completely then rename Facebook.vol and fbmail.vol to something like Facebook.vol.old and fbmail.vol.old.
install the latest version and try.
If it works.. u can delete the 2 .old files.

That’s only one half of the brain. And that the phrase I keep listening from Facebook users.
The question is ... Can you control what other people post about you? Pictures information’s etc?
I know that they can still do that but those information’s are usable only if they are linked to an existing user...
When you open an account then pictures from you on your friends account stops being a picture.
It’s now usable and abusable data... I t’s just a question of time for both of those things...
Try now and use your brain 100% ...

Fantastic. Glad it works for u as well
works fine on my D2. great app, finally
as for the philosophy of facebook and social networking, i'm afraid that what darfri says is true. we users use it as a fun location, posting information that is not harmful for anyone...but what it is done with it in the background where big brother watches, only God knows...
but honestly, with today's tehnology i would not bother about information some guys know about me. i'm sure that if they want to know, they will know...and i don't think they will go as far as facebook. but this growing/exploding community could be a good source too, at some point.

[Request] Chrome to phone-like app for finding phone

Hi guys!
I know there is a way to create a Chrome extension which, when clicked, launches an app on the phone that vibrates the phone and plays a sound file at the loudest volume, so I can find it. Like Chrome to phone but with a different purpose.
This would be a great app for those times when you need to go but just can't find your phone even though you know it is somewhere in the home. With just the press of a button you could hear (or feel, if it's very close to you) where it is! No need to use another phone to call yours or run around the apartment getting all tired and angry!
Personally I would have used it like eight times since I came up with the idea, but I don't know Android programming or HTML (for the extension) so I can't create it myself.
where's my droid
and a couple of other apps already do this. They take a sms message and crank up the volume.

That's great for some people (with unlimited SMS), but unfortunately I haven't got unlimited SMS (nor do I always have access to a second phone. If I did though I would probably call my phone instead as this request is for finding the phone when you know it is somewhere near but don't have the patience to run around and search for it)
The app I want doesn't use SMS messages for launching the app but the Cloud-to-device service introduced with Android 2.2 and at the moment only available to a small but growing number of devices.
I use the Chrome to phone app & ext (code dot google dot com/p/chrometophone) on my Nexus and although it doesn't work every time when it does work it feels like magic!
I thought it would feel as much if not even more like magic if you could use this new service to find your phone with ease. I don't need it to have all the (for some) great features like showing where the phone is on a Google map or wiping important data if it's lost, I've got other apps for that.
I want this app to be as simple as it possibly can be, again like Chrome to phone:
Setting up: Download, Register phone, Be logged into Google account, done!
Use: Be logged into Google account, click extension button, wait a sec, phone rings, done!
Now does anyone here know how to create this app or where to request it to increase the chances of it getting past the idea stage and into something usable? It would surely make my day!

[REQUEST] Black Book

What I'm asking for is a program that acts as your digital Black Book for meeting girls. When I've met them, how many times we've slept together, hide private photos, videos, online backup etc.
It would be awesome if there was an ability to store photos and videos for the specific contact as well. First time I encountered a really good version of an app like this was the "My Little Black Book" for iPhone. I've been searching the net for over an hour now and can't find any app that's even close to that one for the Android platform.
The one for the iPhone is located here: http://saltlicklabs.com/products/little-black-book/
A similar app like that would be awesome.
Things that would be great to include:
Ordinary info
Name, number, e-mail and every other info that's inside the usual contact. Would be awesome if you could import from contact list, link to contact list or something like that
Photos/Videos
Import pictures from the photo library to a specific girl/boy and at the same time hide/delete them from the ordinary library so they can't be accessed without using the application. Comments and ratings of pictures would also be great!
Additional information
First date we met.
What's her/his favorite color, food, movie etc.
How many times have we met?
How many time have we slept together?
Hm, maybe this section should be customisable? The user adds his or her own informations fields based on text input like the above "questions" and then he or she can edit the numbers and text when things update. This way the information you can put on a date/person is infinite!
Custom lock code <-- VERY IMPORTANT!
Secure SMS and MMS inside the application. Threaded or non threaded view with MMS support. Be able to save MMS atachements to application secure media library.
Backup to online dump site like dropbox or FTP.
Also, would be great to be able to export data and pictures in a way that makes it look pretty nice. Word, Excel, HTML or whatever. Import functions for the exported data.
I think it's sad that no one have developed an app like this
If there is any developer that thinks that this is a great idea, I will gladly help out as much as I can with photoshop, tips, ideas, layout and everything else that's not related to programming.
I think this is a kind of app that will be very useful for many boys and girls around the globe
I'm eager to read your opinions!
Best Regards

No offence... but I think it's pretty sad that you want this. I mean, I can understand what you want, but do you really need to keep a tally on your phone? Most people would just take satisfaction from the use of their time rather than counting it. It seems like you want to over geekify a quite pleasurable experience... Anyhoo, each to their own, I'm not judging
Secondly (the helpful bit), there are apps to hide folders/sms/files etc (a search on the market will return multiple apps) with a password or PIN. Could you use one of them instead? Maybe not the ideal solution for you, but at least you could hide those 'personal' pictures and texts

Doesn't really matter why he wants it, but I think and a Black Book app would just be convenient rather than have a lock on your photos and your sms and your file explorer. Also that could appear a bit fishy if were to have a wife/girlfriend. lol I would like to see an app like this as well...

And by the way, it can be used for more than just that. For example, me and my friends, well. They have a pretty messed up way of what they think is fun. For example, they think it's awesome to take pictures and videos of when you do embarrassing things, when you fall asleep waaaay to drunk etc etc. We pretty much ends up with priceless pictures all the time With an app like this, it would be very easy for me to keep track of every funny thing someone have ever done So there are more usefullness than just the girls Or boys if you're a girl

Actually I have been looking for an app that locks other apps (with password or pin) and havent found one. got any names or what to put in the search box? Since you said they are there already?

[APP REQUEST] Tablet-to-Phone integration (see post)

There's been similar App requests before but mine is a little different.
I want my phone to seemlessly with one app (ideally):
- Tether my phone's 3g with my tablet
- Allow me to browse my phones files with my tablet:
- See photos in the gallery off my phone- Listen to music files on my phone's SD card on my tablet- Be able to make phone calls off my tablet through my phone including contacts integration- Have documents written on my phone or tablet be saved on both, so if I only have my phone on me I still have all my important documents/homework with me.
I could go on and on, but I think this tight integration with smartphone and tablet is the future, especially with the Transformer since its more of workhorse and the phone is more of a personal organizer.
I want my phone to seemlessly with one app (ideally):
- Tether my phone's 3g with my tablet
Enable Wifi Tethering on your phone. Easy.
- See photos in the gallery off my phone
Easy, make sure you sync/upload all your camera pictures to Picasa Web Albums (All Google account come with it) And it'll show up on the Transformer in the stock Gallery app. You can use a program like Pixelpipe to auto upload every picture you take on your phone to upload to Picasa. Or you can do it yourself, check mark all your photos, share, select Picasa.
- Listen to music files on my phone's SD card on my tablet
Why store music to your sd card? Get Amazon Cloud Drive (Free 2 gigs, buy an album and you get 20gigs free), upload your music to Cloud Drive, and use the Amazon MP3 app to listen to your music! Or, run AudioGalaxy on your computer, point it to your mp3 folder, and use AudioGalaxy to listen to your computer's music on your tablet/phone.
- Be able to make phone calls off my tablet through my phone including contacts integration
Contacts integration is already done with Google Contacts, auto syncs as long as your Google account is logged in. Making phone calls on your tablet? Seriously? Just grab your phone. This is sorry, but a stupid request
- Have documents written on my phone or tablet be saved on both, so if I only have my phone on me I still have all my important documents/homework with me.
Keep your documents on Google Docs. Download the Google Docs app on your phone/tablet and you can have it on both.
Or better yet, Get DropBox also free. works on phone/tablet/pc/mac/everything. Modify one, and it comes across EVERYWHERE.
I could go on and on, but I think this tight integration with smartphone and tablet is the future, especially with the Transformer since its more of workhorse and the phone is more of a personal organizer.

All the stuff you want to do is already doable and easy to do. Most important thing is moving away from local storage to cloud storage, that's the future and we're seeing already with Amazon/Google/DropBox.
What I'd like is to be able to control the tablet with my phone. Especially now that I have Plex, as being able to link my tablet to the tv and stream video with plex but sit on the sofa with my phone as a remote would be awesome.

This would be a very useful function...
What I'd like is an application to send/receive SMS/MMS from my tablet through my phone.
YES, I have Google Voice, but using that sends from your GV number. I'd actually like the sending and receiving to be done by my Droid X, but have a client application on the tablet that can interface with the SMS client on my phone.

Port your number to Google Voice. I did, love it. Also no contract line with T-Mobile.
I suggest that you might have more luck posting this request in the general Android apps forum here.
You might also give an indication of how much you'd be prepared to pay for such an application!
Regards,
Dave

Those of us not in the US have issues with that though :-(
It should be easy for Google to do though, as they could route all SMS as data to a phone on your Google account, then send it as SMS from there using the phone's regular contract.
An SMS app for the tablet that meant I could recieve texts on it and reply whilst keeping the phone in sync with what's being sent and received would easily be worth a fiver. And that's Stirling, too

The thing with your suggestions is that its a ton of different apps and lots of hoops to jump through.
I want one. single. app.

That only circumvents the problem partially... then if I want everyone who has my (current) cell number to txt me directly to my phone (I can't hear the notifications I set in GV on my DX worth a crap!), I'd need to give them another number.
I think a client/server type thing that would let me interact remotely with the SMS app on my phone would be ideal.

Try this out.
I think what the OP wants is definitely coming. But, read all of the posts by the OP on the thread I posted for the Sync SMS app and you will see some of the difficulties placed on the devs for such a project. Add in the large number of device manufacturers(custom software implementation b/c they refuse to use vanilla android)/different hardware (DroidX for example doesn't support infrastructure Wifi - only ad hoc) and types of connectivity (BT/WiFi/Cellular/USB) and it will become a very complicated project. I'm not saying it won't be done... I think it will be done. But, it is just a little ways farther off from happening. It'll take awhile for the software devs to work out the kinks and with Android/Honeycomb constantly evolving/constant hardware changes.... It makes this a daunting project for a single dev/small group.
Also, when it does come battery drain (constant polling for change in data) and data usage (carriers moving to tiered data plans) issues will have to be addressed. Many of the push API's are being figured out by devs so that will decrease the polling - but, data usage is only going to go up. I only had my TF for one day and I was having to watch my data over 3G because I knew if I continued to use it without worrying about getting onto Wifi I would go over my 2GB cap.....
The Sync SMS app dev has some good ideas and has been hard at work. I suggest reading his posts to better understand the difficulties.
@OP - it'll come with a little patience. In the meanwhile you can do what the second post suggested and use multiple solutions.

I need some smartphonesavy help! How to know if my bf has hidden locks or if those exsist

I am trying to figure out if my boyfriend is tunneling his messages or Facebook chat somehow... I'm not very techsavy. Does this kind of thing actually exist for a regular lg phone? Okay so It looks like whenever he unlocks his phone he will sometimes use two different codes like he has one phone two users. One he shows me without all his real incoming messages. And then his storage is always full on his phone but he hardly has any music or pics. He has some casino apps. One I found in his list said in the default app casino.imitation.app is that a vault app or what?
Yes it is possible. I don't know how lg has it implemented or what phone he is using, but there are multiple users in android that you can switch. If lg doesn't have that feature it could be done with a system modification. Since this a real life trust problem I suggest that you talk to somebody that can help, somebody like a psychologist.

Stop. Why not just talk to him, and if the trust is an issue, then your relationship is also....
