[SM-A750FN/DS] Unofficial LineageOS 17.1 GSI - Samsung Galaxy A7 (2018) Guides, News, & Discussio

Hi everyone,
I had dozen of problems getting my SM-A750FN/DS with the newest Stock Rom to run any GSI Rom, until I tried something that did the trick. Since there are a couple people here, who can't get it running, too, I decided to write a little Guide. Do all things in the right order and it should work. Since I only have the SM-A750FN/DS, I can't promise, that it will work on other SM-A750X devices.
First of all: I am not responsible for anything you do to your device. This guide worked for me, it doesn't have to work for you.
Working so far:
- Calling
- WIFI
- Sensors (All)
Working partially:
- Cam
Doesn't work so far:
- Bluetooth
- Memory Card
- USB File Transfer
Before you start with anything, get this things on your SD-Card:
1. Quantum Stock 2.5 Latest Release (OneUI edition, not the GSI!)
2. LineageOS 17.1 Arm 64 BvS (Extract the XZ and copy the IMG to the SD)
EDIT: Updating to the newest GSI Rom works through TWRP! Just choose the newest LineageOS BvS, extract it and copy it on your device. Install the Image and choose ONLY System. After the reboot you will be up-to-date. Tested with LineageOS 17.1 15.06.2021 GSI Rom (AllArch).
Good, now we need to make sure, that you have the STOCK ROM running on your Phone. If not, download the newest Samsung Stock and flash it with ODIN 3.14.4.
1. Download ODIN 3.14.4
2. Start ODIN.
3. Click on AP and choose the Samsung Stock Image (DO NOT CLICK ANYTHING ELSE!)
4. Start on your phone the bootloader (normally it is VOLUME DOWN + POWER button, when you phone is off).
5. If that didn't start the bootloader, try VOLUME UP + POWER and choose Start Bootloader in the menu.
6. Connect your phone to your computer through a USB cable.
7. Click Start in Odin (on your computer).
8. Wait for the phone to start into Android.
9. Close ODIN
10. Connect your phone to the internet and put a SIM inside (without this your OEM Unlocking option won't appear)
11. Enable Developer options in settings. Normally found after click about 10 times on Build in Settings ---> About Phone. (Here you can also see, that your phone uses OneUI 2.0.)
12. In the developer options you enable OEM Unlocking (this will delete everything on your phone - like a factory wipe).
13. Restart your phone and check if OEM Unlocking is enabled. If it doesn't appear, you are not connected to the internet and your sim card is not unlocked.
Now you are ready to start the flashing of the new ROM.
1. Download TWRP by ashyx.
2. Power Off your phone and load it into bootloader/download mode.
3. Start ODIN, click on AP, choose the ZIP file containing TWRP, click on Options and DISABLE Auto-Reboot (VERY IMPORTANT!).
4. Click on Start in ODIN and wait until it shows PASS.
5. On your phone hold VOLUME DOWN + POWER, until the phone shuts off, IMMEDIATELY hold VOLUME UP + POWER, so the phone can start TWRP.
6. In TWRP go on WIPE, FORMAT DATA and type yes.
7. When it is done, go on the Menu button (arrow showing up), go on Reboot and on Recovery. DO NOT POWER OFF THE PHONE OR RESTART IT TO SYSTEM!!!
8. After the phone rebooted into TWRP go on Install.
9. Click on INSTALL IMAGE.
10. Choose lineage-17.1-20201114-UNOFFICIAL-treble_arm64_bvS.img.
11. Flash it.
12. After flashing is done, go back to menu (DO NOT RESTART THE PHONE YET!)
13. Go on Install and choose Quantum-Quack-A750F-V2.5-ONEUI.zip and flash it.
14. Wipe Dalvik Cache and restart the phone to system.
15. The phone will restart twice, on the second restart LineageOS will start.
You don't need magisk, since the Quantum Kernel is prerooted. If you wish to, try to install Magisk. DO NOT WIPE THE STOCK ROM!
For anyone ending up with problems:
ERROR: Download Mode shows "Only original firmware..."
Solution: You didn't check, if OEM Unlocking is enabled. IT IS NECESSARY TO CONNECT THE INTERNET AND SIM CONNECTION!
ERROR: Bootloop
Solution: Reflash the stock rom from Samsung and try the tutorial again. This time read more careful and don't miss anything. It is important, that your ABOUT PHONE says, that you have ONEUI.
ERROR: LineAgeOS doesn't boot.
Solution: Be sure, that it says BvS in the filename. AvS doesn't work, since Samsung changed the phone from a-only to A/B. Be sure to check if it is ARM64!
Special Thanks to:
@prashantp01 for the great Quantum Kernel 2.5!
@ashyx great working TWRP build!
@AndyYan for the unofficial ALLARCH LineAgeOS GSI. Works great so far.

Nice U took your time to write that long post... However 3/4 of that is copy-pasted from elsewhere...
I would like to suggest something to solve aome of your issues (especially those from DOESN'T WORK) and also TO WARN other users of following such guides.
Bluetooth and USB transfer - man, U simply use wrong kernel! It is not @prashantp01 fanaberie to provide 2 kernel versions, it is done for the purpose. OneUI contains a lib which breaks bluetooth....... GSI version contains file which is needed for USB thing...... Regarding Magisk - U should not use official Magisk which is included in Quantum kernel for GSI roms, please take some research to find correct version dedicated to GSIs... U took (or actually waste) plenty of time for this post as it NOT NECESSARY to do all mention above steps... As simple as:
from OneUI 2.0 - wipe data, dalvik/art and cache, flash gsi system.img, flash Quantum GSI kernel, flash CORRECT Magisk. IMPORTANT: DON'T WIPE SYSTEM OR MOSTLY LIKE U FACE BOOTLOOP.
from any gsi - wipe dalvik/art and cache, flash choosen gsi system.img, flash CORRECT Magisk, done.
That works for 4 months to most users - those who can't successfully boot makes a mistake on some stage.
Please have in mind U share your thoughts to few millions of people and by saying 'You take no responsibility' doesn't mean U are allowed to post ANYTHING.
I hope A750xx Users can take this as a lesson and will use their brains before following any random guide.
Have a nice day!

PS. USE UNOFFICIAL ORANGEFOX FOR FLASHING ON SAR DEVICE, AS MENTIONED TWRP IS PIE SOURCE AND DOESN'T WORK CORRECT ANYMORE ....

Besides the Filesystem (USB + SDCard) and Bluetooth everything works fine. Even Magisk works like it should.
So where is the problem with this way?

Thank you for your post! I have successfully installed LineageOS on my device. I want to add - when someone wants to download LineageOS, it must be Android 10 (with One UI 2.0) with firmware version from November 2020. How to choose correct firmware for your device is explained here: https://www.xda-developers.com/how-to-update-samsung-galaxy-smartphone/

Now I cannot transfer USB files to PC. Windows doesnt detect phone, Linux can (sometimes) but I can do nothing with it. USB debugging is on and Transfer Files options is enabled. I tried different ports, but it happens nothing. Does someone have an idea what I should do?

before we start, here's some basic requirement:
1. your S7 Edge must be Qualcomm snapdragon 820 CPU, SG-9350 model better HK version (Mine is Chinese version, but I flashed to HK stock rom, no need to oem unlock, if you need this part, please search online. be-aware, flash to HK verison from Chinese, you must select re-partion option for the first time in odin)
2. developer option has been enabled already (go to settings->about devices->software info->tap build number more than 5 or 6 times)
3. in settings ->developer options -> USB debugging is on, and OEM unlock is on
4. go to samsung store, download crom and run it. (this will unlock your bootloader, lost warranty. so your choice, don't blame on me)
5. back up your data of internal storage and external SD card
6. Samsung drivers has been installed on your computer
7. know how to enter download mode on your s7e: power off your phone then, press and hold vol down + home + power
8. know how to enter recovery mode on your s7e: power off your phone then, press and hold vol up + home + power when you see recovery booting blue little letters on top of your screen, release them all
Here's the files you will need:
1. Customized Odin https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=24588232905724860
2. TWRP 3.0.1 with SuperSU G9350.TWRP.SuperSU.tar
this is 3.0.1 version twrp, if you directly flash the 3.0.2 version downloaded from @travis82's post, it will not work, you have to flash the above one then update to 3.0.2
3. The following files you need to download is optional, just incase your phone need to be restored to stocked rom (Warranty can't be restored anyway). (Update 11/6/2016: base on @travis82's suggestion, put the SM-G9350_G9350ZHU2APE3-TGY firmware link below, so you can easily flash forward or backward)

5 TWRP 3.0.2 update
unofficial TWRP by @travis82 updated on 11/6/2016 Check second floor
6. @travis82 debloated rom of October https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=529152257862670418
7. and kernel of latest from @travis82 in this post, please go there download the latest Kernel
Now here we start.
1. enter download mode and connect to your computer
2. launch customized odin put G9350.TWRP.SuperSU.tar in AP and flash it. (after this, your twrp interface will be chinese by default, you can change to english ofcoz, however if you totally can't read it, go to flash the below step's update, it will change the twrp's interface to english by default.
3. launch customized odin again and put TWRP 3.0.2 update Unofficial TWRP updated 11/6/2016 by @travis82 in AP and flash it again. (Sure, you have to put your phone to download again and connect to your computer)
4. enter recovery -> wipe->fomat data ->reboot (This step will make twrp able to mount your data partion)
5. enter reocvery -> install -> select the No verity opt encrypt v3.2 and flash it. (you have to put it on your internal or external sd card)
after above steps, your stocked rom has been rooted, and if you like that, you don't need to go through below steps. below is to flash @travis82 optimized rom and kernel
6. put the downloaded debloated rom to your sd card
7. enter recovery -> install-> select the debloated rom file and flash ->reboot after finished successfully
8. the Samsung post screen will be there for several minutes, mine was about 5 minutes
9. put your downloaded latest kernel from @travis82 to your sd card
10. enter recovery -> install -> select the latest kernel and flash ( I didn't wipe the cache, works fine for me)
11. if there's a newer kernel published out, just put it on your sd card and repeat step 10 again, then you will be on the latest kernel ( I didn't wip the cache as well)
End
thanks to @travis82 and @davecotefilm
Unofficial TWRP: https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B6...Wo0M2FvU3VVRGs or https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=457095661767112021
Changelog: https://github.com/travismills82/twr...commits/master
Short version:
Update kernel and dtb for recovery
update fstab
added modem as backup (so we can restore modems without odin)
fixed decryption (no messages yet)
Noticed now I can use compression without my phone getting so hot it wants to explode or freezing.
PS: I don't think you need custom odin anymore. Also here is the crom.apk : https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=385035244224394932
Samsung likes to prevent os reverts ie marshmallow to kitkat. So I suggest you flash SM-G9350_G9350ZHU2APE3-TGY firmware via odin as stock before you just automatically jump to the latest version officially. Here is a link for that also. https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=312978532265363995 Than you can just flash zips via twrp and rollback for jump forward and not be stuck because you have a bootloader that can't load XXX rom.

@travis82 one more questions, in your post, there's video fix, what is that for?
thanks,
I'm trying to get my chinese version rooted. I flashed HK stock rom, but couldn't get pass the crom unlock. I downloaded crom from Samsung store, ran it, and it gave me "unable to open application, an unkown error has occurred. try again later". Anyone knows why? I have oem unlock and usb debug on in developer settings.

Hi travis82, I'm trying to root another s7 edge for my gf, but this time not even s6-crom works. It's showing the same error. The phone is a China version of sg9350, I flashed two different HK roms with odin, but can't get S6-crom working. Oem unlock and usb debug are both on in developer settings. Do you have any idea?

and for root Just use magisk, it works on almost all smartphones and has much more features.
problems faced and solns found
1. During twrp flashing using odin, my stock recovery kept patching the twrp after reboots. So i couldn't install twrp succesfully. To fix this I unchecked "reboot" option in odin (thanks to another xda rooting guide)and switched off device manually after flashing. Then booted into recovery by pressing "home+vol up+power". this time stock rom was gone and twrp was there to welcome me.
2. i ended up in a bootloop after flashing the aforementioned superuser zip file. Instead i flashed BETA-SuperSU-v2.74-2-20160519174328.zip and fixed the bootloop.
Note- My device is Samsung Galaxy j200-G.

3. Pull out battery and boot to recovery (power+vol-up+home)
4. FLASH MAGISK.zip from your SDCARD (Recovery wont be able to mount internal storage so make sure to put the MAGISK.zip in your SDCARD)
5. Reboot and Hello systemless root

I'm unable to start recovery mode. I pull out the battery and after pressing the keys the phone simply goes off. Also I'm unable to enter recovery mode anyway (after turning it off and not flashing anything). That's it, I can't enter stock recovery either.
I tried all button combinations and it just doesn't enter recovery mode.
Never mind, it was probably a faulty button. Pressing with force did the trick. I however employed a bit different path (or perhaps I wrote it down more detailed), which come out more noob like, I'll leave them here for anyone that might use them
Noob, baby steps to root the Samsung Galaxy J2 Prime SM-G532M:
1. Enable developer mode and selected OEM unlocking and USB debug, dunno if it's needed but I did it because in all roots I have seen this is a must.
2. Put the Magisk zip onto a SD card (currently Magisk-v18.0) and put the SD card into the phone. Then I turned off the phone.
3. Turn on the phone into download mode (power+vold-down+home), connect the phone to the PC.
4. Open ODIN and FLASH TWRP file using the AP button (VERY IMPORTANT, uncheck the auto reboot in options, otherwise the recovery goes back to stock I think and the phone will boot into the regular OS, and you'll have to flash TWRP again), wait a few seconds to the flash to finish (odin says PASS! in green).
5. From this screen without touching anything reboot the phone into recovery mode (power+vol-up+home) (just in case press hard the vol+ key). If it boots the phone in regular mode, do steps 2 , 3 and 4 again.
6. FLASH MAGISK.zip from the microSD. When finished wipe Delvik/Cache.
7. Reboot the system. Open the Magisk app (you might have to wait a few seconds for it to appear among on the apps) then press yes when prompted to finish installation as many times (2 times I think). And done, you have your phone rooted.
PD: Magisk can be found here: https://github.com/topjohnwu/Magisk/releases/

And also, everything works fine but how is that i cannot delete system apps manually? They're returning back after reboot.

Basic guide to Installing TWRP, Root and ROM via ODIN on S7 amd S7 edge

Hey everyone.
I have recently rooted and installed the Pixel experience 9 custom ROM on my S7 edge.
Even though I am confident in Installing ROMs and using TWRP I always like to have a check on the net to see the best way of doing stuff. When checking I found that there were so many different guides that the process became more confusing than it needed to be and it caused issues when I was trying install the ROM.
So I have decided to write out a guide to help everyone in the future.
Note. I am in UK using a Exynos version of the S7 edge. I believe there is a complication with the USA Snapdragon version.
Also this is done at your own risk and I am not responsible for any damage, errors or bricked devices. This will also void the warranty of your device.
What will you need
1. A computer with a SD card slot (if you don't have a slot you can usb a usb adaptor)
2. The latest version of ODIN
3. Your chosen ROM zip
4. Magisk Root zip
5. The correct TWRP file for your S7 or S7 edge
6.The latest version of your Stock firmware (this is in case something goes wrong)
7. A spare micro SD card with SD card adaptor
8. Micro USB cable (charging cable usually does the job)
9. Samsung Device drivers
This guide will be split in to 4 parts with some additional notes at the end.
Part 1- on your PC
Part 2- on your mobile
Part 3- In ODIN mode
Part 4- In TWRP
On your PC
1. Download and install the latest version of ODIN to your PC. https://samsungodin.com/
2. Download and install the Samsung Device drivers.
3. Download the correct TWRP version for your phone. https://twrp.me/
4. Now Download your root file, I used to Magisk root but there is super SU as well. I was told that Super SU is dated compared to Magisk.
https://www.xda-developers.com/magisk-v17-1-android-pie-a-b-support/
5. Now download your chosen ROM. There is lots of different ROMs for the S7 and S7 edge. In my case I decided to go with Pixel experience 9, it's basically a Pixel 3 ROM that runs Android P but it's up to you.
6. Go to Sammobile and download the stock Firmware for your device. The download takes ages so I would just leave this download in the background and continue to the next step (You shouldn't need this file but you will need it something goes wrong)
https://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/
7. Put your micro SD into your adaptor then insert into your PC into your SD card slot, then copy the ROM Download and the Root download SD card to the card.
8. Open ODIN and put the TWRP file on the AP section, then uncheck re-partition.
On Your Phone.
1. Before plugging up to the PC there are something to do first. The first thing to do is enter developer options by taping build number 7 times. Then check USB debugging and then check OEM unlocking.
2. Back up your data with Samsung backup and Google backup, both found in the settings.
3. If you already have a SD card inside your phone remove it and put it somewhere safe.
4. Power off your device and Boot in to ODIN mode (volume down, home button and power at the sametime)
In ODIN mode (READ THIS CAREFULLY)
1. BEFORE pressing start on your computer, hold volume up and home button.
2. Now press start on the computer, keep your fingers on the volume button up button and home button. Let the PC and Phone start it's process.
3. The moment the phone screen goes black. Press and hold the power but while keeping your fingers on the volume up and home button.
4. Keep all the buttons held down (volume up, home button and power button) till you see the TWRP screen boot.
In TWRP.
1. Once TWRP boots you will see a screen it will say "swipe to allow modifications" DON'T swipe just press "read only"
2. Press wipe and then press format data. Once the wipe is complete DO NOT swipe to reboot. (You will get yourself stuck in a boot loop) press the TWRP home icon instead.
3. Press Reboot then press recovery this will complete the installation of TWRP (if you press anything else you will get stuck in a boot loop)
4. Allow TWRP to reboot. You will be presented with the "swipe allow modifications" check the do not show again box and swipe.
5. Now insert your Micro SD card with the downloaded files.
6. Press wipe, then press advanced and check cashe and
dalvik cashe. Then Press TWRP Home icon
7. Press install and navigate to SD card. Then press the on the Magisk file and swipe, allow the process to finish and press wipe cache and Dalvik cashe.
8. Press TWRP home icon and press install and navigate back to SD card. Then press your ROM file and swipe again. Once it's finished press wipe cashe and Dalvik cashe. Then swipe to reboot.
9. Re-insert your memo card you were using before. (Not the one with the downloads on, the one with your photos and music and stuff)
10. BOOM your done. Happy days with your new ROM.
Few last things
the ROM I installed had G-apps preinstalled with the ROM, but if your ROM has no G-apps then once you booted, download G-apps from your ROMs browser and flash them with TWRP.
If you get stuck in a boot loop use your stock firmware file and Odin to reinstall the stock firmware and try the whole process again.
This method uses SD card to install the files in TWRP but I believe you can just copy the files via your PC directly to your phone at point 5 in the TWRP part of the guide. I had a spare card so I used a card.
The principal of this guide can be applied to other Samsung devices but newer device then the S7 and S7 edge have more factors to take note of, so some research will be required.
Remember
this is done at your own risk and I am not responsible for any damage, errors or bricked devices. This will also void the warranty of your device.
Hope this guide works well for you.

I don't think this was a big issue with S7E but I know the S8 and onwards have extra encryption protection and 24 hour jailbait locks.
I have rooted my S7E a few times and it's never been an issue for me.
Sometimes the USA Snapdragon versions have extra encryption as well.
Thanks for reply.
In a few days I will try to root.
Fingers Crossed!
( I do have the Exynos S7 Edge G935F)
Also have a newer stock Oreo 8.0.0, unrooted. Thats the part I hear is giving people problems. Something about after flashing TWRP you get a fail to mount the data partition .... or something like that. Something to do with quotas
Heimdell vs odin
I wonder why most people use odin.
The official lineage OS installation instruction recommends heimdell. https://wiki.lineageos.org/devices/hero2lte/install
So what is the difference ? Heimdell vs odin

ODIN is made by Samsung developers and Hiemdell is a 3rd party option. They both do the same thing but some say that Heimdell is safer, easier and faster.
Personally I use Odin because I have got used to it and it has never let me down.
I mostly use it to install Stock UK firmware on cheaper Samsung phones that are from overseas.
Hello,
Thanks for your guide but I think there are too much steps, you can do it easier.
You can keep your sd card in the phone to transfer the ROM and magisk.
You can uncheck reboot in Odin instead doing this hard combination of "keep pressing volume up and power + press start on your computer at the same time", or let reboot checked, pressing start and keep pressing power+home+volume up when the screen turning off.
Even if you're in a bootloop, you can go back in recovery by forcing the phone to reboot (power+home+volume down) and when you see the Samsung logo (splahscreen) you keep pressing power+home+volume up until you see twrp screen appears.
Sorry men, it's not against you or your guide but to help beginners, we are always scared when we see a long and complicate list of steps, especially when we don't know.
But it's nice to share the links of the necessary tools to avoid searching everywhere :good:
And don't worry guys, if you do something wrong you can easily restore the stock firmware, it's very hard to brick a Samsung device, just be sure to get the last version of TWRP for the good model and the ROM corresponding to this model too.
I flashed my S7Edge the day I bought it without stress, take your time, read the tutorials and try to understand what you are going to do before doing it and all will be fine.
The simple version (IDK if it's better) is :
1 : Install Samsung drivers
2 : Copy ROM + magisk + noverity zips on sdcard
3 : Go into download mode (Power off phone and keep pressing power+home+volume down until the blue screen and follow the steps on the screen)
4 : Open Odin (last version), connect your phone to the computer, uncheck reboot box and flash TWRP on AP case
5 : Reboot on TWRP (keep pressing power+home+volume down until you see Samsung logo, and directly keep pressing power+home+volume up until you see TWRP screen)
6 : Wipe everything except sdcard + format data + (optionally) flash noverity zip
7 : Flash the ROM
8 : Reboot to system, configure the rom and wait some minutes to let the ROM create dalvik cache.
9 : Reboot normally and wait some minutes.
10 : Reboot to TWRP
11 : Flash Magisk zip (IMPORTANT ! Don't Flash Magisk just after the ROM, first boot on the ROM without root and reboot one time at least before to avoid lags in the system due to dalvik cache ! Steps 7 and 8)
12 : Reboot to system and install magisk manager apk
13 : I'm not superstitious but there is not step 13, you are done, enjoy !
Don't forget, don't flash Magisk directly after the ROM or you'll get a laggy ROM.
Just boot without flashing magisk and let the ROM doing his work in background during some minutes (5 to 10 minutes should be good), and do another reboot.
After that you can flash Magisk.

Hello,
Thanks for your guide but I think there are too much steps, you can do it easier.

Cheers for helping my out, my guide has a lot of steps as I literally wrote what I did every step.
I was going for a guide that spelt out every single detail for the less experienced people. I glad to see you approve of my links.
Great guide though, great that both guides can complement each others.

You can use this method for Snapdragon, but Snapdragon phones in certain regions have a built jailbreak that can complicate things. There are ways around it but as I am in a region that sell exynos then i have no experience with the Snapdragon Variant. ?

sorry but know i lost twrp what am i doing wrong SM-G935F s7edge
is anyone going to help me or u just like the other sites dont reply i need this info asap its only reason i rooted was to use custom rom oh also turmux
Hey
Sorry I have been busy.
Best option is to flash the firmware and start again. Follow the steps of original comment.
Remember when you boot in to TWRP straight after installing it...then wipe all your data then press reboot and reboot back into RECOVERY....once your done this you have completed the install of TWRP.
Once that is all done....wipe your cashe davalik data and then insert your memory card with the custom Rom and Magisk root inside. Install Magisk first...then the ROM.
Once this is done wipe cashe/davalik data once more and reboot, your custom ROM should load up...once the ROM loads install the Magisk root manager and latest update for the root.
Other things to check have you installed the correct TWRP and correct custom Rom for your device.
Also check your customs ROM feed on XDA to see if anyone has issued like this on there as well, if so there might be specific answer to your issue there.
Hope this helps sorry for the delay

Your certainly not wrong there. confusing isn't the word I would choose more like frustrating to hell. I'm new to this and I can't even get out the starting gate lol every time I move one step forward I move two steps back and that's no joke.
I can't read any more tutorials there coming out my ears it's just adding to the confusion I'm completely lost now. can't even pick a custom rom that's a headache for another time I was just wanting to root the phone but was told stock roms are temperamental and custom roms was the way forward. all I keep reading is tutorials telling you to down load files but never a mentioning once if they should be in zip format as downloaded or unpacked? then providing links to other files taht are in apk file! like Magisk. but continue to about the file as though it were a zip! as noob it's frustrating to keep asking for help and every key stroke at least for me anyway you feel like a pain in the rear! so for now I'm throwing in the towel at least I know one thing that works. giving up lol.
