N9860 - Differences between BRI and TGY software? - Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra Questions & Answers

Hi. Like many here I bought the N9860 version on T-Dimension. No 5G (EE in the UK) but stellar battery life, no overheating and great 4G speeds with VoLTE. Phone came as BRI/BRI/BRI/BRI. Have since changed it to TGY/TGY/TGY/BRI.
Has anyone tried both BRI and TGY to compare? Have you spotted any differences?
I have only noticed minor differences on keyboard symbol positions but not much else.

How to enable carrier aggregation on Note 20 Ultra?

Hi Guys,
Does anyone know how to enable carrier aggregation on unlocked Note 20 Ultra (Hong Kong version but should be the same for all other regions)?
Thanks!
Hi,
It's enabled by default, and I doubt you can disable it unless you force it to use only one band (with Activity Launcher, search for a phone activity with the word "hidden"), but even then you won't be able to turn off intra band aggregation.
You can see if your phone connects well to multiple frequencies with an app called NetMonster

Thanks a lot!
The problem is that I imported the Snapdragon version from Hong Kong and it seems (from what I read about imported S20 Ultra) it doesnt have EU specific carrier aggregation so needs to be changed via Qualcomm tools and PC.
So I wanted to know the method for Note 20 too.
We don't know Carrier Aggregation combinations what HK-version support but there is way to list these from modem log. I think HK-version have Qualcomm so SCAT-method is best: https://mt-tech.fi/en/how-to-get-4g...tions-from-your-android-phone/#Scat_(Qualcomm
What region you try use? In Europe i think Carrier Aggregation should work but in US i think it doesn't support any combinations. If you just share QMDL modem log i can list all Carrier Aggregation combinations from your device.

Actually, carrier aggregation worked out of the box, without any fancy setup. Depending on network strength it shows either 2 or 3 bands combined.
So this issue is resolved.

Yes, I live in the UK and HK version works like a dream - except 5G that doesn't work yet...
And, yes, it should not fully work in the US as the bands are different. But in the US you guys have native Snapdragon variant (1 sim though) that should do it.

I also migrated from S8 and the difference is huge.
I was also a heavy root user but stopped rooting phones as use Knox and banking apps heavily and neither works with root. TBH I didn't miss root much, we can do almost everything without rooting nowadays.
Hi Guys. Anybody can explain me why Note 20 ultra Hk version with Snapdragon Dual Sim doesn't work on 5G. I'm on UK on EE network, my brand new Note 20 Ultra just show me on the screen 4G+ speed. Is the problem with only that model on EE? Please help me. I got EE plan with 5G essential plan. Just want now is that model Sm-n9860 is compatible working on 5G in UK Networks.

Hi ALL. Thanks for sending me maps with 5G Coverage in EE UK. Looks like EE maps are different like real coverage maps with 5G range!!!
Anyway, acording that much accurate map I was check 2 places where 5G must working i Northampton UK ,and....still didnot pickup 5G on device screen. All the time is trong 4G+ only...
I got official message from Technician Team EE UK about SM-N9860,and it looks like that device on that moment is not compatible with EE 5G network .Is all good with 4G bands but not with 5G.

Thanks! I am among the first people in this forum who got SN-N9860 from Wonda, right after it was announced in HK.
The area I live in has no 5G yet so I had to travel to other places to test. The screenshot I posted was taken in Weybridge, near the high street. Three only has a tiny 5G area in Weybridge so I assume the speed and latency would be much better in London or other areas with better 5G coverage.
Carrier aggregation is not setup on the sm-n9860 to utilize the lte bands that USA use - for t-mobile anyways.
Im not sure if changing to csc bri might help for this. Probably someone from usa can confirm?
Maybe @inningsdefeat500 can confirm or not. I believe he has the same device and on T-Mobile USA.

anyone in Israel got 5G on n9860?

5G is new there. I believe the bands are the same as Europe.

When buying snapdragon version that is sold in US only then the 5G may not support right BAND Israel is using. That's why you need to go for exynos that is probably one that is being sold in Israel stores and that has right BAND type for 5G to work.

Mine is the European model which is N986B with exynos. What i understood is that the N9860 is US version and has not got European band. Since people who bought it sweden cannot get 5G in Europe because it's missing 5G band that europe is using.

I have N9860 hong Kong. It should have the right 5g bands for europe/Israel too
N9860 from HK
N9860 from Wondamobile (HK-based) supports European band frequencies, including for 5G, and has the superior Snapdragon 865+ processor.
i just got the HK version and im with HOTMOBILE, im switching to partner sunday, well see if its available they said it should work in beersheva, well see.
I'm using an N9860 (TGY) from Hong Kong in the UK. 5G works only with some providers, but not all.....
- Three - definitely works
- Vodafone - reported to work - I've seen the 5G notification
- EE - definitely DOES NOT WORK
- O2 - insufficient data.
Apparently 5G on EE used to work with early firmware, but an update broke it. Even when it did work the SIM had to be in slot 2 and there could be no active SIM in slot 1.
The summary of all this is that having support for the correct 5G band should not be taken to mean that 5G will work. There is more to it involved with configuration files for compatible operation. Unfortunately this stuff is beyond my expertise. Here is a link....

Question The S9080 Variant

So, I was planning to order an S22 Ultra (US here) but I wanted to get a rootable version. The 0 version (Hong Kong) of Samsung phones is usually rootable + bootloader unlockable, plus it has a Snapdragon, but I was wondering if it of was any use under Verizon.
Does anyone else have any experience under Verizon using the S9080 or any of the Hong Kong variant phones? Cellular capabilities? Aggregation? VoLTE?

No, it's not universal, you can ask Verizon if they can provision it but likely they can't. This may have changed with the S22 Ultra but I doubt it.

Question TGY or BRI for use on O2UK S9080?

Hey guys
Long time since I've posted on here!
I've just upgraded from my trusty 8GB/512GB Note9 N960F/DS to a 12GB/512GB S22 Ultra S9080/DS (SD) on TGY (from techinthebasket).
The phone is currently on TGY CSC but I'm wondering if anyone knows whether BRI would be better for use in the UK, specifically on O2UK?
I can see 5G is enabled, and there is 5G in my area (my wife can get it on her iPhone 12 Pro on Sky, which is hosted by O2) but I can't seem to pick up 5G on my S22. I know the 9080 only has the N78 band for O2 so maybe that's the issue - if there's only the lower band 5G in my area...
Just wondering if anyone has any experience regarding TGY vs BRI in the UK?
Thanks

I live in Sweden and the net configuration in Sweden and the UK are all almost the same. The TGY or BRI are the same phone just different SW customization, but you will not notice any difference at all.
The 4G support is very good but not 5G, the 5G band support is limited.
If you want to buy a better model, look for "SM-S908E" model. You can find it from Etoren https://eu.etoren.com/products/sams...ual-sim-sm-s908e-256gb-phantom-white-12gb-ram
I don't recommend BRI (Taiwan) or TGY (Hong Kong) if you want to take advantage of 5G. Also the SM-S908E has e-Sim in addition.

Unfortunately the only option for 5G in the UK is with a Exynos variant. Even though your device reflects 5G is enabled and it has the corresponding 5G Band, it's not going to connect. Snapdragon is a much better choice even though you'll sacrifice 5G and Carrier Aggregation and of the 3 SM-9080 variants Hong Kong TGY is your best option.

Can I ask, Carrier Aggregation, that's 4G+ isn't it? If so, it's getting 4G+ OK - did a few speed tests earlier and was getting 117Mbs download speeds... Does that should about right for CA? (It's faster than I saw with the Note9 on 4G+ on the same network anyway)

No, Carrier Aggregation is different than 4G+ but if you're getting 117 MBs that's enough for most situations, right? Carrier aggregation is used in LTE-Advanced in order to increase the bandwidth, and thereby increase the bitrate. I can't see rolling the dice on a Exynos variant just to have 5G. And it is a roll of the dice. Samsung's Quality Control is asleep at the wheel.
Something many don't realize, wafer yeild in Samsung's Foundries for the Exynos SoC was a dreadful 30% but it's Snapdragon yeild wasn't much better at 35%. If I were to consider an S22 Ultra it would be after Qualcomm moved it's production to TSMC's Taiwan Foundry in June or July. That will mark Qualcomm's next gen chipset. But even then problems could still nag the device since the marriage between Android 12 and OneUI 4.1 has to date been a messy affair.

I think I read a post from you on the same subject on the Samsung forums before I picked up this phone! That's actually the reason I thought I'd go ahead and get a TGY one!
Hi.
Yes I've discussed this on the Samsung Eu forums too.
Just an update in case anyone is interested - I did a speed test (OOKLA Speedtest) comparison via the browser on both my S9080 TGY (12GB/512GB) showing 4G+ on O2UK and my wife's iPhone 12 Pro showing 5G on Sky (runs on the O2UK network) from the same location last night.
My phone got a maximum of 145.7mbs download on 4G+, her iPhone hit a maximum of 53mbs on 5G in the same location. Of course, they could have been connected to different cell towers etc.
The Hong Kong TGY variant is the closest you'll find to a pure android experience on a Samsung device. Less bloatware, best overall network connectivity with one exception. Samsung should modify it's 5G capabilities so it will work on as many networks as possible. Another improvement would allow system apps to be removed or at least disabled, which will likely never happen. Those two modifications would be a huge step forward.

Samsung do this on purpose to cripple devices and stop people from different regions buying the same product. Similarly with their warranties, its only valid and recognized for the country that the device was intended for. A pure anti consumer move by Samsung. Opposite of the evil Apple, whereby their iPhones don't have bands or CA crippled nor do they deny warranty for customers of other regions.
Just a quick update on this, I've just 'upgraded' my O2UK SIM only tariff to the same 150GB deal but told them my device is 5G enabled this time (I was on a Note9 previously). Anyway, tariff change is completed and I now have 5G (Can also see that HD Voice over 4G is active too)

Yes, I've got a 12GB/512GB S9080 on TGY here in the UK.
How's your phone signal with it as strong and stable? 5G working?
I haven't seen 5G on the phone as yet but it supposedly has the correct band (n78 3500) for the UK.
I speed tested it a few days ago against my wife's iPhone 12 Pro using OOKLA Speed test via both phone browsers in the same location - my phone showing 4G+, her phone showing 5G (my phone is on O2UK whereas hers is on Sky - which uses the O2UK network). My phone saw just over 145mbs whereas hers showed around 50mbs max so make of that what you will!
I will update if I see 5G coverage on the phone though.
EE 5G doesnt work on TGY 3 5G does
