Hi Guys,
A strange one: since getting my Note 20, I noticed it won't connect to majority of public WiFis in supermarkets, etc. My old S8 was connecting fine to the same spots.
It does connect fine to password-protected networks, the issue seems to be specifically with public WiFi spots that require registration.
What exactly happens: I connect to a public WiFi, it then opens the WiFi portal asking to enter the details to register. I do that and then it closes the page and says "No Internet" and asking to disconnect from the WiFi or keep it on without internet. In some places, it won't even bring the WiFi portal for details and just says "No Internet".
My S8 was connecting fine in the same spots and these are spots that definitely have WiFi, for example, in hospitals, supermarkets, etc.
Forgetting the WiFi and reconnecting doesn't help nor "resets" the connection as it seems the WiFi app on the phone still storing that info.
Did any of you experience this before? I thought it might be because I have some packages disabled via Package Disabler but I enabled all the packages, restarted the phone to no avail.
Can't think of anything else and don't want to do a factory reset either.
I have this issue in some places too. Most notably in St Pancras Rail Station... It will instantly kick me off. I wonder if its to do with MAc Randomisation?

I was thinking the same and disabled MAC randomisation with no luck.
By the way I also live in the UK and this issue happens in many places - had it today in hospital trying to connect to NHS WiFi, then had it on train trying to connect to SouthWest Trains wifi, then in ASDA, Sainsbury's... My S8 was working just fine. Can't believe all public hotspots magically stopped working.
I wonder if there is something in the phone / Android version that doesn't work right. Or maybe some silly settings I changed. Don't want to factory reset though.
By the way, I couldn't enter download mode to wipe cache partition. I tried volume up + power key combination. Is it different in HK version?
Today I took my old S8 to the same place. S8 connects to public wifi without issues, Note 20 Ultra doesn't connect, it says no widi available. So this is definitely software issue but not sure what it is.
Did anyone else experience this?

You have to connect your phone to pc or laptop to enter in download or recovery mode.

Have a look here.

After playing around I have found the root cause: Private DNS. It was set to 1dot1dot1dot.cloudflare-dns.com. Disabling it allowed the device to connect to a public wifi. Might be useful for the others who experienced the issue.

[Q] Wifi signal?
Does anyone get a weak wifi signal with their Nexus S? Whenever I connect to my at home wifi I never get full bars and something I'll just randomly lose signal. Also it seems to go pretty slow. I used to have the Mytouch4G and it work flawlessly with the wifi. Anyone else having this problem?

OMG yesss I do.
Just about a room away I loose signal, almost completely. = 0
IDK, but I see more flaws every day that passes
Mine's been working fine over Wi-Fi. I'm pretty glad it does too, because my only data option with it is Wi-Fi..
Sent from my Droid using XDA App
Wifi has been working great for me. It reconnects automatically and doesn't drop. The signal seems on par with my nexus one.
Speed wise, is it on par with the 3G network?
[Q] Wifi does not work anymore after rooting :(
So, I unlocked my Android 2.3.1 and rooted it ... But if I click on wifi so I could connect to my modem it says Error and wont even search or anything. I tried reseting too but still no luck .. What is the problem and how to fix this ??
That's odd, I didn't have any issues with wifi as I connected to Android Market to downloaded ROM Manager during my rooting process earlier. Have you tried flashing a custom ROM on your device to see if it'll fix it?
No I didnt, would that work? .. A friend told me to install a new "kernel" but I dont want to overwhelm my android with custom made kernels .
your problem is you used one of the quick methods of rooting your phone, which used a kernel that wasn't from the exact rom you have.
if your on stock 2.3.1, you will need the stock 2.3.1 boot.img, and then you'll need to root it manually the long way via adb command line. search the nexus s development section for how-to's. they are all there.
i too had this problem, had to install MoDaCo ROM to fix it, but i dont regret rooting, i now have custom rom and over clocked cpu on the nexus s
you have two options, either to flash NANDROID backup to un-root and return to stock or install a custom ROM, i choose MoDaCo bcoz of its UI, it looks and feels just like the stock one.

Yes, that's the point of MoDaCo roms, to make minimal changes to the look and feel of the phone, but to improve performance with his custom optimizations.
[Q] Nexus S wifi issue. Unable to access wifi from my nexus s.
Hi Guys,
I was able to connect to my wifi network for a day. I am using windows 7 machine as hotspot with connectify. From second day I am unable to connect to any wifi network. I did factory reset my nexus s but no results . Can some one help me how to solve this issue?
Observations:
*when i use static ip, It shows connected but the bars are in white instead of green color and i am unable to browse.
*When i use dynamic ip I am unable to connect to wifi. It shows obtaining Ip and never connects.
*In connectify when I was able to connect to wifi the device is shown with an android device name. but now the device is shown as unknown.

[Q] Nexus S Wifi Settings - force close
Hi all,
Just got a new Nexus S - all was well at home. Took it to work today and noticed something very odd. It was fine until entering the wifi settings menu - at which point it dramatically slowed down. I got two 'not responding, close or wait' messages before being able to join the network.... all other settings are fine - just the wifi area.
Weird - wondering what could cause this... too many wifi networks broadcasting (am in middle of London)...?
Anyone seen anything similar?

Too many WiFi around you shouldn't cause that.
Try rebooting and setting again if you haven't already.
Hmmm - rebooted and still have the same issue. At home, or even a block away from the office it all works fine. But in the office itself, although it connects and uses the wifi fine, the settings page is VERY slow to load and gives me the wait/force close message.
Out of interest - I also have 'wifi analyser' from the marketplace. This too is very slow and unresponsive when in the office.
So - it is definately something to do with the wifi here.... but have not got a clue what. Before I join the wifi, or when I am physically somewhere else it all works fine.
Wifi is WPA-TKIP, the key is a very long jumble of letters but surely that is not an issue.
Strange eh!!!

[Q] Possible WiFi problem?
Hi there, just bought a Nexus S, also used to have Nexus One.
The thing is for some wireless networks even though I enter the password correctly, it says connected and still there is no connection at all. (I mean browser tries to connect but at the end it says page could not be found) I even tried with an ad-hoc network that I created with my laptop but still the problem exists.
At home I'm able to my network without a problem. The type of network I'm trying to connect is: WPA2 Personal with AES. Is there any known issue about AES at Android system? Afaik there is no way to change the encryption used right?
this might actually not be a nexus S issue.
some modems/switches/routers are configured to block certain devices/applications/package's
we have a modem and router with both wifi.
but my psp/nDS cant connect to the modem, but can connect with the router

i have a similar problem. My Nexus S connects to my router only within a few hours after a router reset. Then it stucks at "obtaining ip" and never connected before I do another router reset.
My home wifi is WPA2 type, and for WEP type wifi my NS never got connected.
Since day 1 I've noticed that quite often while accessing bookmarks via the stock browser my S3 will lock up. I can fix the issue 1 of 2 ways. I can let the phone sit on the blank screen that it froze on and eventually it gives me the option to force close or wait, force closing fixes it. The other way is by holding the home button, choosing "remove all" and I also have to hold home again, click "task manager" and "clear memory". If I just remove all it doesn't fix it, if I just clear memory it doesn't fix it, I have to do both.
My S3 is rooted, but still running the stock rom. I have downloaded Opera and I'm pretty sure I've had the same issue with it as well, but since I mainly use the stock browser I can't say for sure.
I would like to find a solution to the problem, not a workaround. Opera or another browser is a workaround, if at all possible I would like to use the stock browser and just fix this annoying issue.
Does anyone else have this issue? Is there a fix?
Bookmarks work fine on my Verizon Galaxy S III for both the stock browser and Opera, actually.
I'm running stock, not rooted. FYI.

Taking a guess here, but try opening your bookmark while on wifi and see if it happens.
Also try opening the bookmark via some sort of widget/shortcut and see if it happens then too.
I would just back up and restore my phone as a last resort.

I have wondered if the wifi issue my phone has, is causing my bookmark problem. My phone has the issue where wifi keeps shutting off, many times a minute. I've tried the "secret" number and changing power saving mode, but that doesn't seem to help.

Shuts off several times a minute? Why didn't you get a replacement? That would agitate the heck out of me. Have you tried setting your Wi-Fi to a static ip address? Awhile back I saw reports that this was a solution for HTC One X users whom had Wi-Fi connection issues.

I called Verizon about it and was told that there is an update coming out this month that fixes it. Plus when Verizon replaces the phone I'll get a refub and I don't feel very good about that.

Is that for any WiFi or just a specific router? If this is a specific router and if it uses dual band, you might try staying at 2.4GHz because 5GHz seems related to disconnect issues.

I just received a WRT160N and my old router was a WRT120N and no more than 10 minutes ago I finished swapping it out in hopes the issue would go away, but it didn't
I've also noticed this issue at work where we also have a Linksys/Cisco router. Not sure of the model number, but it's neither of the ones I mentioned.

Assuming you're using WPA2, did you connect the phone with a hardcoded passphrase or using the WPS button? I've actually had more luck with the button, oddly enough.
I have a WNDR3700 and found that the WiFi disconnection bug report I submitted early on to Verizon was solved by switching to the 2.4GHz band instead of 5.0GHz, plus it was solidly retaining the credentials using WPS vs typing in my passphrase.

Yes, WPA2, I have it set to use my specific password because I have about 10 devices and when they need to reconnect, it's a lot easier to use the password that I know and remember.
I'll google how to change it to 2.4GHz instead of 5 and see if that helps, would that hurt my range? Range is the whole reason I switched to this 160N and I got it for free

In my experience, 2.4GHz tends to have a better range.
EDIT: I just looked and your router only operates on 2.4GHz, so that's not the issue. Hmm.
Just for laughs, maybe consider using the WPS method #1 on page 12 of this manual to connect your phone with the router and see if that makes a difference? First "Forget" your router's network in the phone and then go through a WPS hookup from the phone's side first, as it states in the manual.

For some reason that doesn't work. I press the button on my router and then press the button on the screen and after it goes from 0%-100% it says that it didn't detect the client device. I tried it 3 times without success.
Hi there,
I am having an issue with my MK808B connecting to my home network. I can connect fine to numerous other hotspots (samsung galaxy nexus, ipad, mifi, etc), but for some reason it just does not want to connect to my home network.
My router is a Cradlepoint MBR-1000, and I am tethering it to a Pantech UM270 Modem for Verizon LTE internet. I can connect fine to this network on several other devices, including the Samsung Galaxy Nexus.
The MK808B shows strong signal, but every time I hit "Connect", it will say connecting for a few seconds and then just revert to saying "Saved, Secured" but without any connection being made. I have of course tried all the normal stuff about rebooting routers, etc. I have tried "Forgetting" the network several times and re-connecting - no luck. I tried setting a static IP address to my home computers thinking there might be an IP conflict issue, but that doesn't seem to be it. I also tried taking off all security on the network, but it still does the same thing.
Some of the other forums I have looked at suggest going to some "Advanced" wifi settings on android, but the MK808b doesn't seem to have that option that I can find.
I looked into my router settings and I do not have any unusual permission settings that I can tell - i.e. no "MAC address filtering" or "Access Control" enabled.
Admittedly I am no network expert, and it seems like there must be some simple issue that I am overlooking.
Anybody got any ideas?
Thanks!

Stupid answer, but have you rebooted the stick? I've seen that happen on multiple Android devices randomly, and a reboot always fixes it. You can also forget the network and try reconnecting and retyping your password. Either/both of those should fix.

I can connect to the wifi in my office at work. I can browse the internet with chrome and I can even perform a speed test with the speedtest app. However, I cannot download or update apps from the play store. I can do these things via network data. A co-worker has no problem with her GS6 on the same network. Anyone else having this problem?
Nope. And works fine on other WiFi networks?

Most likely being blocked by firewall or the like but that doesn't explain why your colleague can use fine

Haven't tried any other network yet, but I will this evening. Also need to mention another co-worker got a GS7 yesterday and is experiencing the same problem as me. He didn't mention another network and I realize that will be an important piece of information.
Would a firewall allow me to browse and speedtest?
Mine has the exact same issue. It simply won't use wifi for apps other than Chrome. I tried doing some recovery mode steps I found on another site, but to no avail. I have tried it on my network at work and then my home network and still the same. I am going by the Verizon store tomorrow to hopefully get it resolved, unless someone in this arena knows what to do.
Same here. Got my S7 yesterday and 1. Play store will not download apps on wifi but I can browse surprisingly. 2. It seems my wifi signal is weak. I have tried using both my 5 and my 2.4 off my router. Same issue. Taking it tonwork today to see how it does.
Update, but no solution. I am able to do everything on my home wifi network. However, my office network WILL allow me to browse with chrome, do a speedtest, DOWNLOAD apps from Amazon. It will NOT let me download or update apps from the play store and it will not let me stream from Pandora.
Does this make sense to anyone?
My wifi issue is a bit different. It seems to randomly connect/disconnect me at work, but my home network is fine. Never had an issue before this phone.
I had a similar issue and a reboot of my router fixed it..The issue was most notable when downloading from the market
Maybe we don't go to work. Problem solved. lol

4. RESTART YOUR PHONE. (KEEP ACTIVATED FLIGHT MODE & WI-FI)
5. AFTER RESTART DON'T SWITCH OFF FLIGHT MODE.
6. OPEN GOOGLE PLAY. WAIT FOR OPEN.
SEE IT WILL OPEN GOOGLE APPS
7. NOW YOU CAN SWITCH OFF FLIGHT MODE.
Hope that helps

Thanks , I tried that when I got to work. It didn't help. I found out that I can download and stream from amazon music but I cant download or stream from the play store or pandora. I wish I knew more about networking, I'd check the settings on our routers.
Having similar problem on home wifi. I have reset home router. I can download and update if I turn off wifi. With wifi on I can browse with chrome. Have to keep turning wifi on and off to do things.
have the same issue except it will work at the store I purchased at but not at home. Tried every remedy but factory reboot so far. There is a great signal to the phone at home but won't download any apps. Facebook etc seem to come in but I didn't purchase this phone for FB. Any help will be appreciated as Samsung reps have been no help.
Pandora isn't working on mine either, not sure if it's a wifi issue only as service is very poor here (much worse than the old G3, tradeoff for battery I spose) so cannot isolate the cause. Will do later. The steps above didnt fix it.
No Pandora and not being able to read the SD card from cpu will probably be deal breakers for me if they aren't fixed within the 30 day trial. Shame, because there's a lot to like with it.
I can say just one thing - at least on the 802.11n networks the signal reception is much lower than e.g. on Sony Xperia Z3 compact .... that is little disappointing .... I was kinda hoping that brand new super ultra class phone with a/b/g/n/ac modem will have also super ultra good signal reception ...
I have the edge and I'm experiencing similar issues. I've also noticed that backups and even ones through Google photos will not work on wifi.
My previous response seems to be only temporary. Ive been doing the DNSet app and it works. So it looks like something on googles end, hopefully they fix it soon
I bought a GS7 edge and have faced the same issues. Unable to download/update any apps via wifi at home. Using a netgear AC router. All my other devices work fine. I've tried restarting the router. Didn't help. Tried both 2.4 and 5G connections as well. What's weirder is the phone works flawlessly on other wifi networks (school and the best buy store I bought it from when I went back to talk to them about it, it even worked off a tethering connection off the rep's phone)
Try switching wifi secirity from AES to TKIP. It helped me with S6 wifi issues

UPDATE (3/15/16)
So we were able to fix the issue as of last night by changing the advanced settings of the network we were connected to on the phone to static IP. This fixed the google play app issues but oculus apps still wouldn't download. We then turned off enhanced 4G LTE and that seemed to remedy it. Phone as of now works fine, hoping this doesn't cause anything else but will be talking to store reps about this soon.

So the phone works fine on your home wifi? It could still be the router. At my business if it has not been restarted in a while, new devices will not connect as too many ip have been given out since last restart so no more will be able to connect.

That does nothing as the router has an IP stored for that Mac address currently. It's not renewing it's lease, the router just sees it as the phone has disconnected and reconnected like it does every day you go in. If the phone cant connect to any wifi then it's a hardware issue. Otherwise it is more than likely a network issue with the router.

Sooo, I had a similar problem on Wednesday when I got my phone. During setup it wouldn't connect to my WAP (DHCP). No matter what I did on the phone it wouldn't connect. I went into my networking equipment settings (Cisco everything) and reserved it an IP. Worked. Thing is, sometimes I open an app that requires Internet, and it just spins. Or music won't start playing, whatever. I turn off then back on my WiFi and it's fine. I'm going to reboot my networking gear tonight and un-reserve the IP, see what happens. I REALLY hope this isn't a hardware issue on my phone. I'll be pissed if I already have to get a replacement.
Also, restarting the phone doesn't fix my issue with no Internet, only turning off then back on the WiFi. Might be something worth trying.

I didn't mean the WAP or router, I mean the WiFi toggle on your phone.

Oh yes I tried that too
I spent 20 minutes with a Google tech and nothing worked
The WIFI performance on P3 and XL is not good. My old ass S5 outperforms both by a large margin on 2.4 and 5. My home router is high performance Turris Omnia. The pixels sometimes drop wifi completely in the bedroom 20 ft away (with horsehair plaster walls). In the driveway the S5 and Nexus 10 have solid connections and I get nothing from the P3 XL. This issue might be the last straw. WTF Google?
Check your WIFI connections before return window expires.

My work it department enacted a rule whereas they want to know every device that is on the network so I have to submit a network address request and give them my Mac address so they can allow my device access to the wifi network again. Maybe your work it ppl are doing the same thing. Maybe work devices are allowed by default.
Also my p2xl wifi reception is weak... I'm about to get a wifi mean network setup so I can get better coverage throughout my house.
My phone seems to be working better the last couple days. I had some problems yesterday, but it ended up just being YouTube Music. Also, my network speeds are great. Even when I was having problems a lot, my link and Internet speeds were up at the top of what my gear offers.
To anyone having, or has had problems, submit feedback on it from your phone. Maybe Google will see it and do something about it. I'm really hoping for a lot of fixes in the November update.
My IT department solved my issue by resetting the system.
