OEM UNLOCK option missing - Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra Questions & Answers

I need to know if the SM-986U1 bootloader is un-lockable. I bought this phone new, factory unlocked. Activated service with Boost Mobile and everything works great but the (allow OEM unlock) option in developer mode is missing. Can someone please help?

it's not unlockable without paid service

What do you mean by paid service?
Sent from my SM-N986U1 using Tapatalk

The U and U1 models do not have/allow OEM unlock feature.

https://labs.xda-developers.com/store/app/tk.zwander.galaxyunlock i heard it costs 150 USD

Anyone have any intel on who's doing the unlocking? I don't want to allow the Red Army a backdoor into my phone

I must've done some misreading when I decided to order this phone. I thought I saw that it had an unlocked bootloader and now I'm seeing different since it came in the mail today... I'm hoping the thing to unlock it isn't a huge pain in the behind or I'm sending this crap back.

most likely you misunderstood samsungs or whoevers terminology that u ordered from.. they likely listed it as "unlocked" but didnt specify as beimg sim/carrier unlocked.
no phones ever come BL unlocked. youre better off searching xda for that info next time then u are going off what u read online or by ev3n asking employees cuz they also dont know what theyre talking about 99% if the time

I think they will need to flash a firmware from a region that supports it, otherwise we are also limited by hardware in North America. The sim tray is designed to not allow two Sims.

Indeed. Since just unlocking the BL would be the first step ( major ). The ATT and perhaps Verizon ones have dual imei on boxes incase you weren't aware and the general consensus appears to be that they do posses the HW but are crippled by the software that prevents eSim functionality.

You are right, I am aware. One thing that you should know is that there can only be one sim in NA (North America) variants. The two IMEIs are there coz one is for e-Sim. Now this e-Sim capability is crippled by using software.

LOL my bad my sleepy head was trying to help some one flash beta on a live chat at the time and somehow I didn't read esim, probably just read it as sim.
To be honest I really want that functionality and one of the reasons I bought it unlocked was for esim. I ordered OnLine and when it arrived I was disappointed to see only one imei Samsung no where said they will disable the capability and sell it so frustrating.

[Q] lg flex 2 -Sprint - will it work gsm stateside? or international?

hey guys just picked up the sprint LG flex 2 early and was curious I see in the statistics it says GSM while sprint is a CDMA does that mean it has GSM capabilities I know factory it probably comes lock but what would the unlock capabilities be and if unlocked would it work stateside AT&T T Mobile Verizon or just internationally thanks
Where did you see that it supports GSM?
Its in the settings.
All of Sprint's high end devices have the GSM component, just like Verizon. Any Sprint phones with GSM can be unlocked, if a method is found.
The OG Flex can be unlocked for GSM use, including in the US. There is next to no info or development for the Flex 2 yet so that still remains to be seen

They'll do it if it was purchased at full price originally. That's the easy part. Hard part is going to be deciphering what they do exactly. I bought one full price to try to figure it out. I'm going to dump the system files as they are now and also after the unlock and compare, and also log the unlock process.

I'll be trying the same thing. Apparently most of it will be done via an OTA update. If I can isolate the files pushed to it, I may be able to get us a method.

Smh. Scammers. Sprint phones never have, and probably never will have, unlock codes.
Now, if they're selling the MSL, that's completely different. Don't confuse the two.

955U at Tmobile store.

So I went to a Tmobile store and looked at the Galaxy s8+ and noticed the model was 955U not 955T
It was of course their demo unit which was strapped (tethered) to the desk which makes it impossible to feel properly in the hand... But whatever.
Curious if only the demo model was a U variant or what? I never payed attention to other models before now?
The U variant of other Samsung models, do they have Locked bootloaders? Is it only the F variant that is unlocked (bootloader)
Sent from my Rooted Galaxy S7 EDGE on Android 7.0 Nougat, here's the instructions how to do it!
The SM-G955U is suppose to be the Unlock variant of the S8+, which make it super interesting, Hope this comes with unlock bootloader

With the S8 and S8+ they are using single SKU..Verizon, At&t and T-Mobile will be the same model number. Screenshot of my S8 recovery screen.

That is absolutely right. Only exception being TMO will work with a prepaid MetroPCS sim and ATT with work with a Cricket sim.
That's really interesting. So I purchased a T-mobile model directly from Samsung.com (paid in full), will I possibly be able to use it on At&t?

From what I read I'm not sure how long it will take to have T-Mobile officially unlock it. They have an app for that but they have several different criteria as far as being a current customer or a prepaid versus postpaid customer. Ive never unlocked a T-mobile phone with the app or a third party unlocking service so maybe someone with examples could chime in. It does seem AT&T has an easier online unlocking method for current and non customers to simply fill out a form.
And the U models are slow with updates

Does the unlocked version support Sprint?

If you get the unlocked version from HTC's website, does it support Sprint, or will they have different radios? I tweeted HTC and they said that the unlocked version will NOT support Sprint.... But if you look on there website at the radios then I don't see an issue, they are the same as the unlocked version.
Here is a link to the website for the radios.
http://www.htc.com/us/smartphones/htc-u11/buy/#!color=black
And the unlocked radios:
http://www.htc.com/us/go/htc-u11-unlocked/
I also asked if I were to get the Sprint version would that support all other carriers (ie. AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon), I did not get a response from HTC.
I will say this would be absolutely ridiculous if the Sprint version is dumb down and doesn't support the rest of the world. I honestly would think about switching if this were the case. I just want to be on a GSM carrier that I don't have to worry about "if my phone will work" on this network. Annoying.
BTW I say this because I travel a lot, so having 1 phone that works everywhere would be the best thing in the world.

out of the box, the Unlocked ROM would not support Sprint, but the hardware is the same between the unlocked & sprint, so technically you could flash the Sprint ROM on the unlocked model. The problem is the unlocked IMEI would not be whitelisted. As far as the Sprint model supporting the GSM carriers...yes it would, provided the sim was unlocked...or you could flash the unlocked ROM.

OMFG THANK YOU! This makes way more sense now. I have been all over the Internet looking for an answer. Well at least I know the actual hardware is the same.
I feel like having to deal with hoping that Sprint will support the unlocked devices IMEI wpuld be worse then buying the Sprint flavor.
So I have 2 easy options then.
1. Buy it from Sprint at full price and do not extend my contact. Then have them unlock it which they can't say no to if I have no obligation to them.
2. Buy it from HTC but in the Sprint version. But I have to figure out if it is unlocked. I think it is. It looks like it is on there website.
Man I hate how buying phones and carrier plans work in the US. I wish we would go to an overseas model, and almost every phone is unlocked. Then you just decided what service you want yourself. So easy to just walk in a store and get service with whatever phone you want.

Ya I was thinking the same thing. But its weird on HTC's website if you select the Sprint version it doesn't have the color black. But if you go to sprint they do..... facepalm.
Also I spoke with Sprint yesterday to see if they would tell me if the unlocked one works, and they refused to even check. They wanted the MEID of the device, which I don't have, and I told them I don't have it until I buy the phone online and have it shipped to me. So this is annoying.
Also I just ran across this article on Android Central that the Verizon version dose not have CDMA radios. Now that makes me wonder about the Sprint version.

Well if it’s the same as with my pixel xl then we all have to wait because HTC cant keep its production up with the demand.

It's not blacklisted, so far so good.
Carriers don't tend to share a block list, if it gets IMEI blocked by a Canadian telco it'll probably only affect Canadian networks. That's why a lot of phones get sold for cheap on eBay, the person broke the contract, it got blocked in their country but they sell it to another country.

MetroPCS version Unlocked working on Verizon

So I have the MetroPCS version of the A20. I got it carrier unlocked the other day. I decided to try my Version SIM in it and it actually works. I've been using it a few days with no issues on Verizon. Just thought I'd share that.

It seems that the bootloader is locked in the US.

Paid for an unlocking service on eBay. I’ve used them several times. They unlocked it via the MetroPCS unlock app (not really an app because they’ve built it in to the actual OS on the A20 under more network settings). So it’s an official unlock not some remote in to your PC scam thing.

Yeah. Sorry, I should have shared that. Wait time was about 10 days. Depending on when you buy it. The cost was $38.99 and the seller is in the link below. I have used them several times as each time it worked out great.

Tnx for sharing ,
Did you activated your A20 before you sent IMEI for unlocking or not? I have mine A20 and it's still not activated, dunno what I should do first ?
It doesn't matter as long as you have the metro unlock app installed.

I'm guessing almost all the MetroPCS A20s on craigslist were given "free with contract" so the initial 24-month contract is not up yet (your case may be different). In that case, I'd expect MetroPCS(Tmo) to eventually put the MEID onto their blacklist. The carriers used to honor each others' blacklists, which could cause Vz to shut off service in the future.
That said, I bought a craigslist Boost G4 a few years ago, which was not accepted by Sprint but has worked fine on Tmo and ATT ever since. So maybe they are not sharing blacklists anymore.
So I look at the ebay link, did you paid 64$ to unlock this device? really
Did u just have a Verizon sim card that u put in the phone? Because I have the same phone and I got it unlocked thru metro but I tried to use a Verizon sim card thru straight talk and it didnt work. Would I just have to get a sim card straight thru verizon and do it that way? Where I'm at I don't get very good service thru t mobile but other ppl have great service with Verizon

I did not. They have raised prices since I've done it.

I just put my Verizon SIM in it and it started working on Verizon. It was an already active SIM directly through Verizon.

For anyone interested. The updated terms through metro for unlocking the carrier on an Android just involves paying more than $100 on your phones bill.
My A20 is free to unlock in about 10 days or so.
MetroPCS version of the A20
Have you activated the MetroPCS version of the A20 before you sent IMEI to unlock it, mine was not activated. as per my knowledge, Verizon SIM cards work with the following phones such as Verizon iPhone, Verizon Galaxy phone or other unlocked CDMA phones. and it won't be compatible with ATT or GSM phones. I want to get my hands on new MetroPCS as my last phone was way too old and wanted to know whether MetroPCS open near me or not.
