Can T-Mobile version of OnePlus 8 (IN2017 model) be rooted? - OnePlus 8 Questions & Answers

I'm looking to buy an carrier unlocked but originally T-Mobile version of the OnePlus 8 (IN2017) on eBay. Does anyone know if there's any known way to root this model? Thanks.

Yes it can be rooted. You unlock the bootloader and then you can flash a magisk patched boot image.
Unless the person already got the unlock bin from oneplus, you will need to do it yourself. They make you wait a week after sending the unlock code.

Thanks for the reply. I didn't win that bid, but it's good to know in case another good one show up.

I've tried and can't for the life of me get the stupid unlock.bin file to work on my oneplus 8 :crying:

Did you rename it? I don't know if renaming would make it not work, but I didn't rename it. Try downloading it again if you can't get it to work.
No ideas past that

SM-G955W Oreo Root?

Hello everyone, I've been looking to root my S8+ G995W on 8.0 oreo for a while now, but I haven't had any luck.
I previously traded my oneplus 5T for this s8+, and according to the receipt provided to me it was from Koodo and it's unlocked (not sure if koodo unlocks bootloaders though). I've looked through the developer options and I see no OEM unlock option, and I also had a friend try to run me through a couple things with fastboot to unlock the bootloader from there, but we've had no luck.
If anyone requires more information to help me out, please do let me know
I've decided to turn here as my last resort, hopefully there is someone that has been in my same spot and knows how to root this variant, thank you!

When a carrier says that the phone is unlocked, they're saying that it's SIM unlocked (not bootloader unlocked).

G955W is the Canadian variant with the snapdragon chip, snapdragon = no bootloader unlock. The only model you can unlock the bootloader is the international variant with the exynos chip (and carrier don't have them).

That won't work because samsung uses other services.

As of right now, I don't think that you can root with oreo. The only way that I'm aware of is this method but it's on nougat and you have the 80% battery limit.
If you really wanted to play with rom, mods and everything, you should have kept your 5t.
Hope this helps.

Android Q on Converted T-Mobile OP7 Pro

As you know finally there is the MSM Tool for converting your T-Mobile branded OP7 Pro to international.
I have fully converted, downloaded the Android Q Developer preview and tried installing it via Local Upgrade has instructions said with no luck.
1. The .Zip file is in the root directory
2. The extension is .Zip and not .Jar
3. Local upgrade recognizes the .zip file but fails to install
Anybody has tried yet? This is what I get.

You converted but did you unlock the bootloader?
Have you tried flashing in TWRP?
Honestly I wouldn't even flash it unless you are aware of the bugs and anything bad you may experience along the way.
I wish you luck.

Did you SIM unlock and Bootloader unlock as well or just use MSM with both locked?

I converted but didn't unlock the bootloader. I'm only Sim Unlocked Tho. Just wanted to see the progress of the Rom. I was planning on checking it out and Rolling back to Pie.

Yeah you need to unlock bootloader.
The page should have mentioned that as a requirement to flash betas.
Hopefully soon it will become better. But do let me know how it is . I'm pretty sure no one has actually flashed it and reported how the experience was.

You need to unlock the bootloader. I would wait until the next beta when OnePlus actually starts putting Oxygen OS features in. It's very bare right now a lot of the OnePlus stuff it either not working or missing all together.

Ah I see then. They didn't mention the bootloader must be unlocked.
I'll check later when I get home then and have my PC available.

I saw the video, but the one used on it was an originally International OP7 Pro.
I would love to hear from someone with the T-Mobile variant. Don't think there would be to much of a difference but it's worth trying.

If you flash the beta on the T-Mobile variant the it's the same beta as the unlocked device. You need to be bootloader and SIM unlocked and it will work the same as flashing the International OS or most custom ROMs

Is there any way to unlock my phone.

I bought a oneplus 7 pro without paying much attention to the fine print. The phone apparently has an IMEI issue and it locked to T-mobile. I want to use it in UAE, is there any way I can unlock it and use it here. It has already been shipped and I can't cancel my order.
PS: Can I unlock my bootloader and install custom roms.
Dinner... You should be able to unlock the bootloader and root it, but it will remain Sim-locked to t-mobile. There are services online that will unlock it from the t-mobile network.

I think there might be a way actually. Haven't personally tried it, but many have said it works. It looks like on the the Android 10 Developer Preview 3, you can actually bypass the token, and unlock the bootloader! I'm not sure if the phone would still technically be SIM locked to T-Mobile (if you wanted to use another carrier), but honestly have no idea. But at least from what it sounds like you should be able to unlock the bootloader, and flash custom roms.
Check out these posts, and the main XDA article that has instructions:

You still need an unlock token from OnePlus to unlock the TMO model, even on global firmware. It takes about a week from request to processing. You can get around it by flashing the A10 DP3 OTA, and it won't check for the token.

TMobile oneplus 8 modified MSM tool available yet?

I have a OP8 from Tmobile that they will not unlock. Has anyone found a way to rebrand the 8 away from TMobile without unlocking the bootloader?
I have found the modded MSM tool for the 8T but nothing for the 8 except the original MSM tool.
Any help or guidance would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance
I've been wondering the exact same thing , all it is is something in the code telling it relock the bootloader after flashing the software and I know that part works because I've downgraded android versions on a locked financed phone three times now... You would think everyone would be asking to make one for the 8 also..
I am also waiting for Unlocking of Oneplus 8 tmobile Bootloader without unlock token

Wait a few days, call in and let 'em know it's because you're developing for the device.
If you're out of your 14 day return window they're generally pretty nice about it, but it'll still depend on the rep you get. (Can't take a return phone thats been unlocked, causes all sorts of issues)

Chance of a patched msm tool allowing bootloader unlock?

I used a patched msm tool to unlock my T-mobile locked oneplus 7t and it worked perfectly. But it doesnt seem there is one for the Oneplus 8t. Is there a chance that we will see one? Im searching every day looking for a way to get around an unlock token and having to wait it out. Ive only had it for a week. Its driving me crazy lol.

On my 7t I didn't have to do that that's why I've been searching for the same patched version for the 8t
