I don't like the camera of XL. The UI doesn't look attractive, and the picture quality is also average. The colors look dull and the autofocus doesn't work even when the square turns blue.
So my question is can I improve my camera quality by using some other camera app, like samsung's. I know it's hardware but I believe that software plays an equal part.
plus will there be any difference if I use a custom rom that is unofficial. Like all the kitkat roms for XL.
And please don't suggest to change some settings. They hardly make an impact.

Yes, it's software issue. You can check this out http://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-l/general/xperia-l-post-best-camera-shots-t2333949/page28..we have some example and discussion about it..
The focus is horrible for stock..
You can install 3rd party paid app call snapcam or kitkat camera that support jb..
okay
so if it's the software, isn't it possible to port cameras of other devices to XL alongwith their libs or algorithms.
Because I believe that third party cameras will use the same libs and therefore same results.

It depend on what camera you're installed..some of them have their own lib that doesn't intergrated with sony's lib..
You just have to checked them

Use snap camera. It's better than stock and there's no autofocus issue. You can manually change some settings to get the perfect picture.

Hello I checked snap camera it really looks the most customizable camera I've tried
The focus seams to work fine but images still grainy, however I must experiment more with settings
I'll wanted to upload some comparison photos but forum has a small image limit
I found this quite useful too:

And in another post someone posted some image quality improvements
Does this apply to the latest official update or only to the older firmware mentioned?

The above threads are useful for stock camera only. If you are planning to use the snap camera then no need for these.
Also the noise is a hardware issue too and not just software. I have tried the same app on two different devices and thus got different results.
Of course you cannot expect a very good quality from this phone but it's good
I am on the latest stock firmware and the picture quality of stock camera is good, the only reason I use snap cam is the autofocus issue. Otherwise some manual tweaks and you get the best photos from your stock camera.
And you can upload the images to any image hosting site and embed here.

So my question should be what is the best results using other apps except stock cam for better hardware use?
Does the kitkat camera app on latest stock rom works like it does on the kitkat rom?
Tried snap cam & camera 360 (quite improved since the last time I tried it with my samsung galaxy core)
Still haven't shot a correct macro photo, It is insane that a photography specialized smartphone does not have a macro mode

How could you even expect macro from a mid budget phone. I already told you that DO NOT expect so much from this camera.
These apps already draw the maximum output from the hardware and there can't be any more improvement.
These two apps I told are the best that I have found so far. So use these apps and search foor some better if you want.

even older and cheeper models can shot at macro mode
I managed to do this with my old Sony Ericsson K550 that was a cyber-shot model
and also with my 5 mp samsung galaxy core so yes I except a smarphone with 8mp camera promoted as a smartphone for photograph to have at least the same if not better results with macro mode (if there was that mode to start with)

Samsung phones have undoubtedly pretty good cameras. But the worst part of Xperia L is the camera. It can't even closer click proper photos so there's no chance of macro.
And you can get the macro mode in some custom camera apps but won't give you extraordinary results.

Hi all,
I bought OP6 few months ago and went back to pixel 2xl. I was gonna go for pixel 3 but not gonna do it because of alot of issues with the device. Anyway im thinking of buying a OP6 (no 6T ) but the only thing hold me back is the camera. So my question is how's the current development with GCAM + OP6? Is is working like on OP3 + Gcam? HDR working + greenish photo issues have been fixed? Highly appreciated your input
Don't know how it worked back with the OP3 but I come from a Moto G4 Plus and GCam was miles better than stock on that phone although it was very slow to take shots.
My experience with Gcam on my OP6 has been really good. I didn't start using Gcam until a couple of weeks ago but I'd say it's pretty solid when it comes to regular photos. Video doesn't work but the stock op app works fine for that. When I compare pictures between stock and gcam the gcam can be a bit too aggressive when it comes to background blurring and zooming in on text on a whiteboard is better on stock though nightcamera is miles better on gcam.
My point being that gcam isn't superior in every single way compared to stock. Don't know if it might be gcam not working the same as on pixel 3 or the stock just being superior in some scenarios.

Let me get this straight.
You bought OP6, then went back to Pixel 2 XL (because the camera wasn't good? Or is it something else) Then you wanted Pixel 3, but it had issues.
So you want OP6 with the power of a Pixel camera by using the Gcam mod apps?
Ok, I think I can advise on this particular scenario, since I have been testing it extensively.
1) When in good lighting conditions, the stock camera of OP6 is almost as good as cameras of other flagship phones (iPhone XS, Galaxy Note 9, Huawei Mate 20 Pro etc.) I have seen multiple reviews of this camera, and during daylight, it's excellent. My own shots with this camera were very good as well.
2) When in dim lighting conditions, the stock camera of OP6 uses an oversharpening algorithm that makes images look grainy/noisy and also makes images lose a lot of fine detail. Gcam does superior noise reduction, and preserves a lot of detail, but the images come out softer than other flagship phones' . I would definitely use Gcam for low light shots.
3) However, a lowly GS9 cam (which I have access to) is still superior to this OP6 camera, in both daylight and low light scenes. There's not a large but definitely noticeable difference in detail and focus at night, and a slight difference during the day.
Conclusion: The Gcam app will not change your camera experience, unless you take a lot of shots of dimly lit scenes. Using the Gcam app will significantly help you bridge the difference between the OP6 camera and other flagship cameras.

Lol. Yeah i went back because of the camera. Once you use a pixel it is hard to find a good camera phone. Yes. I dont wanna go for Pixel 3 due to remaining issues. Here is the thing, only thing i love about Pixel devices are Stock fluid system + superior camera. But i was a oneplus user few years back. Thanks for your long explaination. May i ask you how do i get GS9 cam apk? Only drawback of coming to OP was the camera. Im gonna give it a try

Sorry, but GS9 camera comparisons are from an actual GS9 phone, which my friend owns.
If your sole issue is camera performance, then don't go back to OP6. It's just not as good as flagship cameras.

totally agree. let's also say that other flagship could cost (in some cases) more than 2 OP6 put together.
comparisons are soooooooooo sweeeeeeet..
I spend most of my free time looking comparisons between phones but we gotta face the fact that there is a CONSISTENT price difference between a MATE 20 PRO or the lastest iPhone and an OP6 (or maybe two, lmao), and still I think that so much money won't giustify the quality difference.

Thank you both. The reason that pixel camera is great beacuse it is just point and shoot. 9 out of 10 it will produce blurr6 free perfect photo without any editing. Most of other cameras won't do that. To be honest im not a photographer or i dont take photos alot ( like used to be). So it is good that i can relay on a camera that will capture that moment without a fail. But if the GCAM port can catch up to that I'll ho back to Oneplus. I know that there is a huge price difference. Thanks though. Really appreciate your help

I'm using the S10 Port and I doesn't give an option for a wide angle lens and any setting with the front facing option will keep crashing upon taking a picture. Everything else seems to work fine, including the night option. . I hope an apk comes out soon, as there is a significant difference in quality vs the default camera on the Note 10 +. After seeing the results, I don't even want to open the default camera. The amount of noise and non-focus is a turn off for me.

I've been using 1+ 7 Pro ports for the past month. Everything works afaik (aside from switching to telephoto manually). Many ports are available in Tele groups where Arnova, and other porters reside. Links to these groups can't be shared on the forum ofc, against the rules.
How can we get access? I have tried so many different version. I'm on Note10+ US Snapdragon.
I can't find anything that supports Wide Angle, Portrait, or RAW. All files come out in 600 resolution when using raw/dng.

That site is trash. I tell you that I managed to download the apk, installed and use it. But you can't change between the rear cameras, you can't use the front camera (at leat I don't find a way to do it). So I'll keep using the Sammy camera and play a little more with pro mode.
This config works great on my S20 FE Exynos:- https://drive.google.com/file/d/1fr2tTrKMKot_tJNp4wyyR6Vk-5hIXvP-/view?usp=sharing
Place the GCAM folder in your internal storage, open the GCAM app, double tap on the black area around the shutter button and select default.xml
**Please make sure you're using ZGCAM 6.1**
Night Sight is better than stock with a tripod.
I know this is for the S20FE Snapdragon but there is some info on config settings
[GCam] Google Camera for Galaxy S20 FE 5G | GCam 8.1 LATEST (cyanogenmods.org)
I've been playing around with this for a few days now. This is on the latest Wichaya apk which is still on 7.3 but it still works well for me:

I've attached my config file for Snapdragon models. All lenses working with the correct label, selfie is showing the correct framing with no crop. Haven't tweaked many advanced features but for all intents and purposes the app is functioning as if it was made for this phone and I'm fairly pleased with the results. A few cons to this as it is not the latest GCam version and video is inferior but I tend to stick with the stock Samsung app for that.
Snapdragon only!
Have you tried Latest Arnova beta?Do you manage to make work auxialiary lens?I think quality is better with 8.1 version.
You can get tele working by setting tele id to 52. Wide and ultrawide are working oob.
If anyone has a good config for the latest arnova please do share. Snapdragon model. The ultrawide cam output is terrible and I can't tweak it, viewfinder is a bit blurry, autofocus only sosom telephoto takes a photo but gets stuck for a while on HDR+ processing. Sometimes the tele photo saves but it is really poor quality. Main cam works well. Still playing with the settings.
Trying to downloading
somebody posted a thread on reddit with a recommendation for a version of Arnova GCam and a link to both the apk and config.
it appears to be working with all cameras, I've only tested it briefly but if anyone is interested...

Weird. Maybe the XML didn't load properly. It shouldn't do that.
Coming from pixel pro 6. Love the camera, hate the size of phone. Know I'm giving up some great features by going smaller but what are you early owners seeing with the camera? Anyone planning on finding a gcam ported to it? Heard someone ported google photos also so magic eraser would work.
Thoughts please why I impatiently wait on my phone to arrive.
Good enough. Definitely better than than my Flip 3
The 3 seemed to lack detail and colour for me.
I've been searching xda for the gphotos port with magic eraser, but nothing is coming up for non pixel devices... Let me know if you know where it is plz!
Samsung now has object eraser, works same, however you could try this: https://www.smartprix.com/bytes/how-to-get-pixel-magic-eraser-on-other-android-phones/

I took some Flip 4 pics today to see how it goes, the color rendering seems ok, decent photos in good light conditions. No overkill, just point & shoot camera - things we were expecting from this phone.
The camera on this phone is definitely no Pixel 6 or Pixel 6 Pro; however, I think that should be a given when upgrading. I installed The Greatest GCam port and was impressed. The issue with the ports that I have found is that they don't mimic the new camera software on the Pixels. The one that was closest did something weird with my camera lens and made everything spherical looking.
Been using pixel since pixel 1, the camera is not as good as pixel's, even compared to a pixel 3 (2018).
The picture took by Samsung is more colorful than pixel, more colorful than real.
And the picture took at night is worse than pixel. Pixel's algorithm (night sight) is absolutely needed.
Is there any working G Cam port? Thank you.
Haven't found a gcam port that doesn't crash yet, but Adobe is working on a camera app that is suppose to have similar AI to Pixel, along with some other great stuff. Don't know when it will be released though
The camera is certainly a step up from last year's device but not quite flagship grade.
It excels in well-lit areas absent of any fast moving objects.
A working GCAM port might convince to me to reconsider it as a daily driver (as I literally have no other qualms with the device).

Tried the BSG camera port. The good news is that everything seems to work. The bad news is that I took a number of test comparison shots with the Samsung camera (both lenses, night mode, portrait mode). The Samsung photos were clearly superior each time. If nothing else, makes me feel good about the camera built into the phone.

Can you take the selfie using the front camera? I tried G Cam from all mods and non of them has a working front camera. You can preview from the front camera, but you can't save the image.
As for the "superior", it's just personal tastes. Many people like the raw and real feeling of the G cam. Samsung's camera is too "vivid", the sky is bluer and the trees are more green, FAKE. And often lost the details because of the color management. G Cam, just captures the real world most of time.

Sorry, I've already deleted G Cam, so I can't test the selfie cam. Didn't think to try it.
Came from S22U, so my experienceis not applicablefor everyone.
For sure, the camera is not like in that phone, especially I'm missing the telephoto one. Night shots are more messy and such.
On the other hand though, it's not that bad at all. Night shots are doing what it supposed to do, day photos are great.
In my mind, I can say that the cameras on Flip 4 gets "Decent +" mark
