Android 11 Upgrade by mistake - can I downgrade to 10 without losing data? - Google Pixel 4a Questions & Answers

Topic says it all. I REALLY didn't want to upgrade. I think it downloaded on its own and I had system update on reboot checked.
Can I reflash the factory image for Android 10 without losing all of my data or am I screwed and stuck with 11?

Yeah I just got forcefully upgraded to Android 11.
I turn my phone off every night and when I turned it on this morning it took a lot longer than normal and then I had Android 11. Very annoying

I'm not happy about it and didn't know that Google actively pushes OTA updates as background downloads. I had the update services that I know of disabled and it stealth updated anyway.
I had to flash factory reset and wipe all data to get back. Now I'll be paranoid every time I have to reboot.

The new screenshot system is weird. I used to screenshot from the menu by holding down the power key but you can't do that anymore.

Android 11 is better than 10.
The new way it handles notifications.
Media controls.
The Google Pay, and home shortcuts on the power button.
Android 11 is one of the reasons I bought the Pixel 4a

Just delete .nomedia folder in Files and you can take screenshot again.

Oy - if you prefer stagnation pixel devices are clearly a poor choice

Ugh. This isn't a debate thread. There are perfectly valid reasons to stay on A10. I will not engage in the debate though.

You could flash the A10 factory image through the Google flash tool if you don't mind also wiping data.

You can unlock your bootloader and flash-all the last a10 factory image.
I'm on superior os and it's android 11. Give it a try before you roll back.

This is in no way a deal breaker but man the Pixel 4a has issues with firmware updates.
I shutdown my phone every night and upon every boot up it checks for newer firmware but despite this, I didn't get a notification for the November security update. I had heard it was out but kept waiting and then I manually searched for firmware updates and it was there....
Get it together Google.

You can go under developer options and disable automatic system updates and it won't install updates.

If your phone is not the google store version with unlockable bootloader than you CAN NOT flash images and go back to previous versions. If you are able to unlock bootloader, than you can go back but you can't save your data. It will result in phone being stuck at animation screen if you do. You can however, use swift backup like I do, and backup your apps and data with rooted phone, and restore them later. Titanium Backup hasn't been updated in so long that I don't recommend that.

Security Update XT1572

Finally the September Security Patch is available for the Style. Hope Nougat is on the way soon.
How many threads about a September security patch that is now 4 months old do we need? Not very impressive to get the September patch in January in my opinion. If anything, the release of a security patch for Marshmallow now doesn't give me much hope that we will see Nougat in the near future. I hope I'm wrong, but I feel like we are getting screwed.
Moto does security patches in 1/4 by 1/4 updates so roughly every three months. Also they are usually a 1/4 behind the most recent.

Motorola/Lenovo never committed to a release schedule.
If u have the captured ota pls share it here
Xt 1572 Retasia Ds
False expectations that it was Nougat update, turns out to be just a security update for September month.
Moto updates slowly turning out to be a just a regular name any oem. No reliability for the software updates.
Day by day getting disappointed by Moto series ??

I am aware of that however past performance while not indicative or proof of future performance says they have been sticking to an every 3 to 4 month schedule on Moto X line for security updates.

I did full unroot from within the su app before remove twrp. Don't want to restore full stock image. May be I will wait till N is released. Now if there is a way to disable the nagging update notification

If you used root to make any change to the system partition (like Xposed, or even some simple things like the GSAM root battery_stats monitor), you cannot take an OTA successfully. The script checks to see if the system partition has been modified, or possibly just ever mounted R/W, and will refuse to continue and will result in an error in recovery like you see.
If the condition occurs like you are seeing, the only recourse is to restore to pure stock by flashing the factory images or restoring a pre-root TWRP backup.

The only way to do is flash stock.. else wipe cache partition and disable notification for Moto Update app. It wont bother you anymore.

True, I meant the only way to take the OTA update was to go back to stock... I neglected to mention that you can restore functionality to the device by just wiping caches.

You can do a minimal factory restore to satisfy the checks for the OTA. Just reflash the partitions most likely modified (recovery, system, boot) and the OTA should succeed. This assumes you're not running an alternate modem or haven't tinkered with any other partitions (besides the logo, that's fine to leave altered).
See ace's nice post @ https://forum.xda-developers.com/mo...de-return-to-stock-relock-bootloader-t3489110, and just execute the lines from boot.img to system.img_sparsechunk.8 with the appropriate 6.0 (May) files.
Has anyone from India received this update? I download RETASIA DS verison of this ROM and flashed it, however I'm getting no wifi and can't find an alternate download link. And obviously now I can't flash an older verison and then update using OTA

What Moto Update app??? I don't see such a thing listed under Apps in settings.

i have a pixel 2 on Android P

So I have a Google Pixel 2 and I installed the android P preview via sideload but I had my bootloader locked now I can try to toggle OEM unlock and put in my pattern but after I put my password in it still says it's off idk what to do I haven't tried to flash the 8.1 factory image or unlocking yet but idk if I'll be able too there's I'm almost 100,% sure it's not a Verizon model I don't have any Verizon apps and on 8.1 I could toggle this on and it's not greyed out
I am also not able to change this in the preview, maybe you could install the 8.1 OTA (afterwards a factory reset)to go back. Flashing a factory image will not work with a locked bootloaded, OTA also works with locked BL.

That wouldn't brick my phone?
Before you attempt anything extreme, I suggest factory reset your phone and do the minimal setup to get into the settings and try toggling
I did still no luck
To be fair: i can not guarantee that, but i can just imagine 3 scenarios:
1. Update fails, OTA install fails
2. OTA installs but a lot of FC´s with apps (factory reset afterwards shoudl get rid of that)
3. Everything installs and is functional without doing anything (i don´t think so).
i would expect, that option 2 would occure
Installation failed, called Google to see if they could do anything they only referred me to the Android beta website, guess I'm stuck till DP2 comes out

This is a long shot, but try disabling your lock screen security PIN if you have one, then check the setting again. If still greyed out, try setting a PIN, then check again. This typically prompts for your PIN, maybe somehow something got messed up in the sideload.
March update could just be to old, April update could work because of newer data. OTA checks whether the update is older/newer.

Glad to hear. Did it become un-greyed without lock screen security, or after it was re-enabled? I have seen similar behavior before, so I thought it might be the same thing in P.

It was never greyed out just after I put my password in it wouldn't turn on the slider and at first I just thought maybe it is on but bugged out but after I removed my password it just turned on properly I'm about to test it as soon as the factory image downloads again

HOS to OOS in China

Hi I'm looking for advice. My new oneplus 7 pro will arrive later today, I live in China so it will ship with HOS. I plan to update to Android 10 OOS but I have a reservation. If I update, when I factory reset will I have to input a Google account on startup? Obviously being in China the Google servers are blocked, so I'm worried the phone won't be able to connect and will get stuck on the Google login setup screen.
Thanks for your advice

There's a magisk module to skip startup, I believe. After that, you should be able to set up a vpn, if that'll work at all.

Thanks for that I will take a look, although it requires me to root before updating right?
Do I need to factory reset after installing the update? If not, I could just set up the phone as normal with HOS then update to OOS using the method that doesn't wipe the phone?
You can skip all these settings(connection, account login etc.) at the left(or right) corner of screen when startup, and finish them in system setting at any time.
Wipe everything in stock recovery affer switching system, this is the only thing you need to do.

I'm on android 10 and I don't have any problems with any apps. If you go back to pie, you will have all your data erased. Why don't you try a factory reset on 10 and see if you still have any problems with apps. You lose your data but at least you have upgraded.

I updated from 9 to 10 (factory resetting immediately upon update) and find no issues with the ROM yet...yes, the dark mode doesn't work on 9/10 apps but that's normal as the software is very new. It will take sometime before the apps get update to meet the native settings on Android. Once you factory reset, don't restore app data. It's best to start fresh when upgrading Android...
To answer your question is to flash the 9.5.11 update via TWRP. Get the update from OnePlus website support download. Again, this method will wipe every data you have.

General New Play system update available Pixel 7 Pro

Settings > Security > Security update
Settings > Security > Google Play system update
There was a bug on these at launch that didn't allow Pixel 7's to update these...so when Displax updated his mod, these weren't in effect...
anyone have issues with SafetyNet passing with root after updating these?
I'm back to Pixel after a couple years off and I just want to be sure doing a Google Play system update is not the same as System update/OTA. Or is it? Can I do this update without worrying about losing root or anything? I guess what is the difference between a Google Play system update and a System update?

Passing safetynet according to YASNAC after Play System update
My P7P downloaded 2 files for the Play System update. First 1 downloaded and installed. After the reboot, the update showed another file which I downloaded and updated.
Now shows Oct 1, 2022. Safetynet passes too.

You will not lose root. It is not an OTA, but it certainly feels like it! You will get 2 updates, one is 64Kb big, the next is like 60+Mb! So it feels like it, but it's not. I am able to confirm (after having roirraW "edor" ehT confirm) that you can do these and it will not affect root or safetynet passing.

Google Play System updates are not the same as an OTA/Monthly Security updates. They are part of the "newish" Google System Updates which includes Google Play System updates, Google Play Services updates and Google Play Store updates.
You won't lose root. Here's what is new in it.

No duplication here either. I updated the Play Services to October yesterday.
Let me ask the question here as I don't want to open a new thread.
I got my phone at 27/10 and ever since I'm being notified that there's a new security update, the size is 72.99MB.
Unfortunately I'm not able to install this and it annoys the hell out of me.
Is it possible that the upgrade fails as I've rooted the phone and I have the displax mode?

If it's a monthly security update (rather than a Google Play System update), then yes, being rooted can make it fail due to the fact it will likely fail the pre-OTA block verifications.
Having said that, some users have reported successfully updating even though rooted.

Thank you for your reply.
Could you please shed some light for me, what's the best way to unroot the phone? I've tried the "Recommended steps" from here: https://www.xda-developers.com/how-to-install-ota-updates-keep-root-google-pixel-phone/#recommended
Code:
Extracting the boot.img from the zip file
fastboot flash boot boot.img
fastboot reboot
But even after this, I still got root and the update wasn't successful

Those directions are incorrect. On the Pixel 7 series, it's the stock init_boot.img that needs to be restored, not the boot.img. You can try to install the update through Magisk's "Install to Inactive Slot" method which a couple of people said worked for them (others said it didn't) even though I didn't think Magisk was restoring the stock init_boot.img so I'm not quite sure how it worked for those people or just restore the stock init_boot.img and try to update again.
Code:
fastboot flash init_boot init_boot.img
Also, see this guide for all things Pixel 7, including on how to update each month.
