With my 30 free days of Sprint service coming to an end soon I wanted to use my Evo on T-Mobiles network. I tested making and recieving calls and sms through SIP and Google voice on my home network and it works great, all thats left is to tether the Evo to my G1. To my surprise it does not work.
What will it take to get the Evo to recognize Ad-Hoc networks? Cyanogen's roms can do this.

To reduce the ammount of WTF T-Mobile responses and clarify what I am trying to do. Here is a quick overview.
I got my Evo at I/O, it came with a month of Sprint service and that month is almost up. I do not want to switch to Sprint nor do I want to stop using this great device so I have found a way to use the phone without a carrier.
What needs to be done first is making and recieving calls. The Google Voice app does not currently allow calls to be placed over wifi so I need a work around for this. The work arround is to tie my Google Voice number to my Gizmo5 account which will let me access Google Voice via SIP. I then use the app SIPDroid to access my Gizmo5 account and make calls from Google Voice over Wifi. Done.
Next is SMS. Google Voice for Android allows you to make and place SMS over Wifi. Done.
Lastly is data. The Evo has wifi. Done.
With all of this I can use the phone compleatly over a WiFi network. But now I want to make the phone mobile.
I have a G1 on T-Mobile's network. It is rooted and running a custom build which allows me to do nothing but use the phone as a WiFi hotspot for a good day on the battery. The app being used to tether is WiFi Tether for Root Users.
The problem is the G1's hotspot is Ad-Hoc and currently the Evo (Stock Android in general.) can not connect to Ad-Hoc networks without modifications such as the ones done in Cyanogen Mod. If theese mods are duplicated for a rom on the Evo I will be able to use my Evo where ever I go without the need of a carrier.
Hope that cleared everything up.

I think there are a few threads around already talking about the EVO's lack of ability to connect to ad-hoc networks. I don't know of a fix as of yet though.
wait, what? you got the Evo to work on TMO? am I reading this wrong?

I got the evo to receive calls and sms over wifi. If I can tether it to the G1 than yes, it would be on T-Mo.

problem is, in this case, if your already using wifi for your connection, you cant use it for tethering.. its already in use for another purpose(wifi).
Im still astounded by the TMO effect in this thread.. since this is a CDMA phone and you would need a GSM phone to talk to TMO. So since the cell radio isn't used your gonna be out of luck unless you tether via USB or BT.
perhaps everyone is reading this wrong, ot its just me.
His evo is NOT on the TMO cellular network. Its not possible.
His calls and sms are through wifi probably google voice or a SIP provider. Through his home network, NOT TMO.
tmo uses GSM and EVO (sprint) uses CDMA.
to OP ive not tried ad-hoc with my phone so im sorry i have nothing to report to ya. GL

I don't know if you have a Nexus One but I just checked and the EVO can tether to the Nexus One's FroYo hotspot feature (over 3G).
Sprint
I think the reasoning behind the ROM for the EVO not being able to do this is because Sprint plans to charge for this service down the road and so you would get an app either from them or the market but it would only allow connection if you paid for the service on your plan. Much like how carriers plan to charge to let your phone be a wifi hotspot.
I may be wrong but that makes sense to me, if they can make money off a feature, they will...
this is quite clever. i would interested in seeing how you setup gizmo5, sipdroid, google voice, etc to do all calls over WiFi. i have a gizmo5 account and google voice.

im thinking of it going in the other direction, there is a mod for the EVO hopefully soon to be integrated to the wifi tether app which lets the EVO wifi tether work in infrastructure mode, outside of ad-hoc mode.
Could the G1 use this app or something similar to broadcast outside of ad-hoc mode on infrastructure mode? more devices would be able to use the G1 also ... just an idea.
the ability for the EVO to connect to infrastructure networks instead of just ad-hoc networks seems reasonable. perhaps somebody familar with cyanogen's work could look at porting this function over to the EVO?
Doesn't canceling your Sprint trial involve you returning the EVO? The subsidized cost you got in the phone was for signing up for service. No service means you return the phone or buy it at MSRP.

No.
The i/o phones were given out for free. Included was a free trial of unlimited data phone and sms until a certain date. June something. Your thinking of the 30-day money back guarantee, that you get if you bought your phone from sprint. Hope that helps.
I just found out that my tmobile contract is over today. Therefore I'm looking to switch over to another carrier. I recently moved and the tmobile and AT&T coverage near my new home is horrible. (Besides, I'm not a big fan of AT&T)
I'm in interested in the SGIII. So started looking at either Verizon or Sprint. I like sprint, but their family plan doesn't quite fit into my cost requirements. Therefore Verizon seems to be the best bet for me in terms of monthly cost. (3 lines, unlimited talk + data).
First Question - Does Verizon still route Skype via their own voice network? I remember couple of years ago, they were blocking Skype calls via Wifi and forced the calls through their network. Not sure if they're still doing that. I travel outside of the country occasionally and would like to make Skype-Out calls via WiFi back home. Plus, I also make frequent international calls, therefore would like to use Skype-Out from home over wifi.
Second - How hard is it to side load apps without rooting on the SGIIII? Such as installing third-party apps for tethering or WiFi-sharing?
thanks

I would like to know the answer to that first question also, I am leaving the country in 3 weeks and will only have WiFi.
As to tethering, you need to be rooted for that on the original plans, but I believe the new data plans include that as part of the plan.

You don't need to be rooted to tether. There are several programs out there. Foxfi, easy tether, and a few more I would think.

1. Skype actually didn't come preloaded on the phone. you can check the play store and find 2 versions, 1 from verizon - which only works on the verizon network. and 1 that's actually from skype and works with either wifi or verizon's network.
And I can confirm it works great over wifi - use it almost daily.
2. You don't have to root to tether, but you need root access for some apps.. like adblockers.. etc.
Hope this helps.
I love my S6, but I can't believe Verizon doesn't let you talk and surf at the same time, like you could with the S5.
I have advanced calling on, which theoretically let's you do it, but if you are not on LTE, it won't work.
Really Verizon? I thought we were in 2015.
Wait so if you're in 3g we can't do voice and data? That sucks been doing it since my note 2 days
I have no problem doing both while connected to advanced calling. However, if advanced calling isn't available, I can't surf the internet. This isn't a Verizon thing, it's a Samsung deal. They didn't include the radio to allow for it. This may very well have sealed the deal for me to take it back and stick with the Note 4. Being in a rural area a lot, I need both no matter what network is currently available.
It's a CDMA carrier issue with these newer phones that only have a single antenna for cellular radio.
Droid Turbo, Moto X, Nexus 6, HTC m9, etc...
It would be the same on other CDMA carriers such as Sprint.
I first noticed it when I got a Droid Turbo, and it was really frustrating. You also notice it when using SignalCheck Pro, on my G3 you see a 1X and LTE connection active, but on the S6 you see either or depending on your connection.
You wouldn't think it would add much cost to the phone with the second antenna.
VoLTE has always required LTE to function. The giveaway is the freaking "LTE" in the name.

I'm fairly certain everyone in here knows this. The issue isn't with VoLTE, it's that they left a radio out that allows talking and surfing without VoLTE. Note 4 and LG G3 could do it before they received the update that made them VoLTE capable.
You're confusing simultaneous voice and data with VoLTE. OP sure didn't understand that LTE is required for VoLTE.
What has changed is that Verizon is starting to ONLY support simultaneous voice/data VIA VoLTE, in place of extra radios.
Unfortunately this is Verizon's trend. In theory it should improve battery life vs a two radio system. In theory...
They're pushing for this and honestly I think it's a bad choice, at least in the short term. Calls while using VoLTE on Verizon are 100% dependent on your LTE signal. So if it gets too weak or you have to switch to 3G, the call drops. It also can be unusable if the LTE signal is weak. Verizon's FAQ even says if you're in an area of weak LTE or spotty LTE, to disable VoLTE. AT&T and T-Mobile have a fallback so the call won't drop.
To be sure that I am understanding correctly, let me ask it in a dumb downed way.
When you are on 3g and make a call, you can NOT use internet simultaneously.
If you make a call while in LTE, you CAN use the internet while in the call.
This has been the case with VZ and LTE as far as I can remember. No LTE, no internet+call.
Is this situation different? Think I am just misreading and not understanding.
EDIT: And to be clear, I am talking about the beginnings of LTE. Like in the Thunderbolt days. The advanced calling feature was not around that I am aware of.

There are a number of techs involved with have both voice and data for CDMA phones/network like VZW. In the past, VZW LTE phones could connect Data on the 4G LTE and have voice connection over 3G/CDMA simultaneously but on the newer phones like the Turbo, Nexus 6, S6 this is no longer possible UNLESS you have VoLTE enabled and are in a 4G LTE location.
The Thunderbolt actually can have both 3G data and Voice simultaneously and one of the few phones which could do that but the battery quickly dries up
my 2 cents
Ah ok, makes sense. That is what I thought, just wanted to make sure.
Guess I will hold on longer to my Note 3 and S3(love it)for a while longer. The S3 is still a great phone in my opinion. Does what you need, and fairly well. Plus you pretty much can recover from any brick status.
Sad to see the way phones are going. Locked bootloaders, no root, forced crapware, no sd card, built in battery.
Next up will be DNA link to your device for "Security". That silly fingerprint reader is so yesteryear.

WTF? Am I the only one who needs to use data while on a long (conference) call?
I spend most of my time in metro areas with LTE, but Verizon wants to alter my unlimited data plan to activate voLTE. Not happening.
My VZW LG G3 didn't have this issue. I'm no expert here, but there won't be a root or ROM that is going to help me with this problem, right? This is a hardware issue, correct?
Looks like my wife is getting a shiny new Samsung phone.

Talk and data works fine on LTE.
You won't lose your unlimited plan to use VoLTE, I use it just fine.
The G3 was one of the last phones to use two radios simultaneously. A ROM won't fix it.

With the original Edge I know you sacrificed an antenna for the screen so no surfing and voice. Are you all saying even the regular S6 only has 1 antenna?

Yes. If you don't have an LTE connection and don't have Advanced Calling enabled, you won't get simultaneous voice and data.

It's all recent Verizon phones. The Nexus 6, Droid Turbo, One M9, S6, etc. None can talk and surf at the same time without VoLTE.
Yeah I'm guessing we are headed towards total VOIP.

That's what Verizon wants. It would be great if Verizon had a fallback if LTE was weak or drops... but as it is right now, it simply takes what Verizon was known for (call reliability) and throws it down the toilet. Ok, it's not that bad... but in the years we were with Verizon before VoLTE, I really don't think I ever dropped a call. I'm sure that's not true, but it was rare. Since VoLTE, it probably happens a few times a month, easy, maybe more . And since I got the S6 last Friday, I've had 4 total due to what appears to be a weaker LTE signal in general on the S6.
My old HTC m7 had this. On Sprint. It's terribly frustrating tethering to my consoles and getting kicked off when i get a call. So is this possible on our phone? Am i missing something?
Well, data and call work fine however when you get a call it'll pop you down from lte to 3g or h+, I'm assuming it's a feature to conserve battery but I'm not 100% on that
They call it Spark..

This is how the new/ enhanced Sprint network works:
All calls are routed through 3G network. Sprint 3 G is CDMA(Support either data or voice)
For some reason when sprint rebuild this so called Spark network they limited the phone Bands to have either Data or Voice(not both)
How ever some of the Old phones(Gs4 non spark, HTC M7) doesnot have spark capabilities they do Voice over 3 G and data over LTE (if any service available)
To answer your question: This will definitely happen on SGs6. As a user there isn't much you could do unless you use google voice and allow calls to rout to your hang out app.(this works great for me with most of of Commute route has solid LTE and wifi at work)
This simultaneous Data/Voice restriction will be ther till Sprint decide to go with VoLTE. (Guesstimating by 2020 Fingers cross )
I scoured the internet for the last few hours trying to determine if there is still a way to use an app, or some other method to essentially hotspot my phone, without a hotspot plan. My phone is network unlocked from OnePlus directly, and I have unlimited everything (not even cap throttling) through US Mobile, but they changed their hotspot services (afaik) after they moved to "WARP 5G." Last year I switched to them from Google Fi SPECIFICALLY because of the hotspot capability, and I don't want to start paying for it now, especially considering the Warp 5G capability is on their SUPER LTE (Verizon) specific sim, while I can only use their GSM (T-Mobile) sim.
I digress. Is there an app or ROM/Root method that will let me share my phones data with say, an iPad, or other phone? PDAnet and Foxfi only repeat whatever Wi-Fi signal my phone is connected to, and this is not what I'm looking for. (Woe 2012 3g pdanet)
Edit: it appears im a fool and just didnt figure out how to tether via BT to an ipad. In the mean time, if any of you have some decent ideas, im still all ears for if/when i need a back up plan
