I'm looking at picking up a phone on a budget and the Nexus 5 is a definite contender from just looking around. Reviews and such are great, but they're mostly just yapping about specs and not actually telling me if it's good or not. That's why I'm asking here, finding out from the people who know the phone best!
So, is it worth it at this point? Is the lack of an SD card slot as irritating as I would assume? For those with multiple devices, is there another phone you can compare it to?
Thanks.

I'm getting a phone on a contract, so the Nexus 5 is $0 on a 2 year contract from Virgin Mobile. They have the LG G3 too (no G2 any more, but that's okay) for $0 as well but I'd have to pay for a more expensive plan. Broke life bites, but everybody needs a phone, and I'm never home so a land line is useless to me lol.
id say that if you are like me, a college student, and dont use your phone for about 3 classes a day plus an hour worth of driving, then the nexus 5 is definitely worth it and the battery can be ignored. If you use your phone like a desktop then id look elsewhere, i can pack out amazing battery life on my n5 but compared to other phones that get the job done at no extra battery cost, those are worth it.
The n5 is still a beast phone and i will keep it till it dies even though i can go get the lg g2 from my mom and just swap sim cards, plus she wants my phone cause its a tad smaller, but i love my nexus. something about it just cant be replaced.
1+1 is a nice option too
It's amazing how well the N5 has held up this late in its life. I have an N5, a 2014 Moto X, and an iPhone 6 and the N5 still gets used at least as much as the other two. I have a tendency to buy a new phone every 6 months or so, selling the old one to pay for the new. I've NEVER made it past the year mark with any phone other than the N5, and we are well past a year now. There's just something about it that still compels me to use it, and I'll certainly never sell it. So you ask if it's still worth it? Absolutely.
Ditto, the Nexus5 is a Rock Star!
Definitely worth getting of you can find one. The play store is sold out I believe. You can try your local Craigslist, even better on swappa.
Edit: Virgin Mobile is selling. nexus 5's on contract?? How??
Sent from my 1+1
Another vote for yes. Like metalhead, I've never been happy with an Android device for even a year, until my N5. Bought at release, and if I didn't shatter the screen a month back, would still be using. As is I'm on a moto x 2014, and while I do like the phone, and it really is a better phone, I'd still almost prefer to be using the N5.
As for no SD, I buy everything in 32GB and find I always have plenty of storage space for my needs.
I will agree the battery was pretty bad, but as I'm not a heavy user I never had a problem making it through a day on a charge.
I've had this since December 2013. No intentions of changing!
Support wise, custom Roms etc........ its hard to beat a Nexus device.
I would say N5 is still a very worthy choice:good: at the right price.
I recommend buying new. The warranty is so worth it.
Never buy used nexus 5's simply because there will always be something you might have issues with and no warranty :/
One note. You can't compare a 1+1 to a nexus 5. One is a phablet the size of my face and the other is a phone with a nice size display. The 1+1 is only 2mm shorter and narrower than the nexus 6....just to put it in perspective. Its a great phone but there are a huge risk to buying it.
I recommend buying like a small 2000mah battery pack that's the size of 2 flash drives and carrying that with you in your car or something. Just in case.
Is the nexus 5 worth the 350-400$? Yes.
Just got my sister a moto g 2014, looked at the specs, and they are exactly HALF of the n5, so if we do math, 203$ for the moto x2 = 406$.

And 1 more thing
Light user: you use your phone mostly after the work day, and then you don't use it too much. You should have around 75% by the end of the day (my experience).
Heavy user, you have plenty of free time or you need your phone 24/7 cause you have your own business, you will be charging your phone around 4-5pm if you wake up at 6am.
Amazon has the PH-1 on sale again, this time for $279.99
If you are tempted to get the 360 camera, Essential has it on their website (in the accessories tab) for $49.00 + shipping
I ordered the Halo Grey for $279.99, no way I could pass up that deal. Eventhough it's "old tech", it's still a relevant device, and with the amazing mfgr support so far, it was an easy decision.
I bought it as a backup, and out of curiosity. Turned it on, hooked to wi-fi, and went from 7.1 to 9 immediately.
My current driver is a mate9, but I've been using the Essential for about a week with zero issues. Battery easily is
lasting a day, which was my only concern coming from a 4,000 to a 3,000mAH battery.
One little maybe glitch is a known issue with signal strength, but, even with "no bars" showing from time to time,
it still is connected. So far, so good. And even with the smaller screen, the resolution from LCD to OLED is unbelievable.
I bought this on Prime Day.
I'd be soooo mad if I paid full price for this...or even if I paid $399 on Black Friday 2017...

Kind of an ignorant thing to say, don't you think?
Bought on late last week on sale for $329. Then the next day it dropped to $280. Checked with Amazon about price matching (they weren't able to do anything). Oh well. Enjoying the phone even though it took me a long time to get everything transferred from my old phone (S7 Edge). One thing I do miss is the Always On Display. I tried a couple of apps but they were draining the battery too much.
Just ordered one from Amazon for $279. I was on the fence since I've been apple for 4 years and have been tinkering with my old android devices on and off. Hope I don't regret it. Maybe moving from my 6sPlus (just got my $29. battery replacement from Apple). My last devices were kitkat!

Well, my experience is that Amazon will credit the difference for purchases made within 7 days. But it's very YMMV and I did it whilst speaking to a rep via their online chat. You can ask to speak to another person (or better yet, end the chat outright), though whether you succeed is their choice.

Sorry I edited my post as you were replying as I got my answer.
Chat would not refund the difference and could not stop shipping as it was in last stage. They said I can request it be returned from courier once I get shipping confirmation.
I ordered a second at cheaper price and will try to get it stopped or ask again for difference refunded. If they refuse both I will sell second one on ebay once it arrives.

The price on Amazon just went up to $365! Darn, I knew I should have ordered one!
See Mr. Andy Rubin...price your phone a little better and people WILL buy it.
A small profit per phone at a better price, is better than NO profit per phone at an expensive price.
People can boo-hoo Oppo all they want, but I think in some sense, it was a smart idea to do what
they did with the OnePlus brand. Sell them DIRT CHEAP, built brand loyalty a bit, and increase the
price for each phone. Make little to no profit to start with, but build it up over time.
But, I guess he thought because my name is Andy Rubin, everyone will buy my phone for whatever
price I sell it for because "I am Andy Rubin". Well, outside the tech world, the general public has NO IDEA
who you are buddy. 700 dollars for what is to the general public, a no name phone, it WAY out of line.
Hopefully, with the sales of the PH-1, someone will knock some sense into Mr. Rubin and get him outside
the west coast tech bubble to see how the REAL world works!

OK, now they're playing games -- it's up to $345.00 now.
I just grabbed one today and payed 260 euros with VAT and shipping to The Netherlands. I use a OnePlus 3T at the moment and I was planning to wait for 6T but at this price I couldn't resist. I still think Essential is the best looking phone on the market. If I am happy with its performance I might use it for longer and skip the 6T. My only concern is the photo quality with GCam and the signal strength.
Mine is replacing a 2 week old OnePlus 6. Not that I don't want it but because the wife has took a shine to it lol.
I'm really on the fence about ordering a OnePlus 7 Pro. I have a 512gb Note9 with an encrypted bootloader now and I'm bored out of my freaking mind.
I've been watching Swappa closely, just to see what is trending. I actually started watching Swappa for a deal on a Pixel 3XL and kinda ended up in the OnePlus 7 Pro section too. If I order a Oneplus 7 Pro I will get it direct from OnePlus just for warranty peace of mind.
But I see a disturbing trend of all the OnePlus 7 Pro's going up for sale rather quickly. Pretty common to see "only used for 2 days" or even "used once or twice" and then boxed back up promptly for resale..... WHY?
Why is everybody using this device once or twice and then immediately trying to sell if off? Got me pretty concerned about making a $782.19 purchase. It was a lot easier to stomach when a OnePlus was only $500.
Why don't you ask them? There could be many reasons. I'm very happy with mine, I would have no idea why someone else isn't.
I guess the best you can do is watch some YouTube reviews, read about common issues and concerns,I don't use swappa but maybe you could message a seller there and ask,
Id imagine people just find the phone too big, don't like the curved display, most likely something to do with the design I'd say.

I try not to spam their listing with questions when I have no intention of actually purchasing the item. I also couldn't expect them to answer candidly on the same page they are tying to recoup $700 on.
Whenever possible I follow their XDA names/links and send a PM asking. No responses so far. I did see one guy state he was selling because he was just to "entrenched in the Apple Ecosystem" but if he was going to keep an Android the OnePlus 7 Pro is "the phone to have". Then an hour later he purchased a Pixel 3XL in another listing I was also watching. :silly:
Pretty stupid on their part. They just return the phone in the first 14 days and not lose $250 from the resale cost. I have patience for stupidity.

I've been watching YouTube videos and reviews and unboxings and scouring the internet pretty much nonstop since the release. I'm not worried about ghost touches as I never use NFC. Size, weight and curved edges are all the bees knees to me. I'm an HTC Max user from way back and always buy the biggest screen available in any line.
The only real deal breaker problem I could see is if the camera produced literally unusable pictures. I take LOTS of pictures daily. They don't have to be better than the Samsung's or the Pixels (I've had both). But they do need to be worth keeping. I'm afraid the only way I will be able to answer that question is to see for myself in person ie order one.
I will say I am pretty picky about the color though. I don't really care for the Nebula Blue much but I REALLY want that 12GB ram...

Due to the number of people who have tried unlocks, etc and had issues I would be, at least, looking for photos or video of the device working before you stump over the cash but yeah, it's a great phone so watch some reviews and if you like what you see, go for it
The 12gb ram model was the one OnePlus sent out as review units/influencers/promoters. They could just be u loading. Also people buy phones without checking compatibility, maybe not for their carrier. If not on T-Mobile there's always some issue, i.e. Sprint not working at all, att not WiFi calling, Verizon cdma_less issues. Could be any number of issues but don't let that worry you. Same thing happens with every phone that is released. I personally sold my s10e after 3 days just because, there was no "I need to keep tilhis phone" feeling. My op7 pro gives me that feeling , it's one of the best phones I've ever used, and I replaced my pixel 3 xl with it.

None at all. Pixel 3xl performance is garbage. Hiccups, stuttering was terribly annoying. Only good things were camera and software day 1. I'm like those swappa sellers you're skeptical about, I change my phone monthly sometimes. In 4 years I've made 90 sales, 60 were my personal use device. The longest I've kept a phone was OnePlus 6 for 6 months. Ill never fo back to iOS, and in Android world OnePlus is my favorite. I don't use camera just for pics of the kids. I NEVER take selfies.
I ended up with the 8gb blue direct from oneplus. I wanted the 12gb but it was 14 days until shipping and couldn't wait. I got the T-Mobile gray on lau ch day but hated the software/sim lock/ single sim, but the 12gb would have gotten here after my return period was up with T-Mobile. Still no regrets, I don't think it would have bee. Any big change in performance. I'm still surprised to how many apps are still where I left them even several hours later.

I just gave one UI other chance as you see, but stock Android and OOS(near stock) are way better, especially together with a hardware top of the line (OnePlus 7pro).

I completely agree about the Pixel 3 XL performance, complete garbage. At the time I had the Pixel 3 XL, T-Mobile OnePlus 6t, and unlocked OnePlus 6t from OnePlus. I sold the Pixel. The only thing that phone has going for it was the camera, and like you said day one software updates, but the performance is horrible on that phone.

Your going to have to cover either phone. They are WAY too slippery to really use naked. I used to use my phones naked (I've never dropped a phone) but I don't trust these phones sine teh OP5 and OP6 and not OP 7Pro.
I've always had black or grey phones but the blue is amazing. I agree it is so slippery being olephobic gorilla glass. I hate to cover it. It like a minimal perimeter case.
Sent from my GM1917 using Tapatalk
I got the blue one
Why not use the included case? It's a perfect fit and doesn't cover up the beautiful back or the light around the edge. I've always put a case on my phones and have never cracked or broken a phone in any way. This bad boy is slippery and I have no problem or issue using the clear case!!

I got the blue one from T-mobile, I always get blue if it's available for the phone I am interested in since it's my favorite color. I too sometimes switch phones monthly which I have the option of doing if I want since I am a Jump On Demand customer with T-Mobile and have that option. Longest I have kept a phone in the last year is almost 2.5 months.
I switched from the Note 9. 90hz screen made it a keeper for me. Camera is not bad as some ppl make it seem but of course the Note 9 camera is better. Haptic feedback is also better but still not on the same level like on the iPhone and Pixel yet. I've also bought the Nillkin Type C Wireless Charging USB C Receiver for wireless charging and Elevation Lab USB-C CordDock as a secondary even though honestly I really didn't need to purchase that as the wireless reciever works. Battery is the same as on the Note 9. The only thing I miss is one handed mode. Stock android and or Oxygen OS should really develop a one handed mode since these phones are getting larger each year.
Hello All,
Just upgraded from my OnePlus 3T to a OnePlus 8 IN2010.
I have rooted phones in the past, never rooted my OnePlus 3T.
Currently from everyone experiences, what are the advantages of rooting the OnePlus 8 nowadays.
And major Pro's or Major Con's?
Any really cool stuff worth Rooting?
Thanks for any information in advance?

Hi,
IMO root with the OP8 isn't necessary. I've rooted and used ROMs with every single other phone I had, because the updates never came, and there were a tons of customization back then. Now I feel that customization is used just to port features from the Google Pixel, or other beautiful UI/UX elements. Android when evolving got better with customizations and design (especially OP), so I don't feel like rooting is worth it for this phone.
But! I still love doing that on other cheap phones to make my experience better.
That's my POV, and it'll surely change when the OP8 won't receive updates anymore.
Have a good day

Hello All,
Just upgraded from my OnePlus 3T to a OnePlus 8 IN2010.
Best Regards

I still root for systemless ads and customizations. It's worth noting that widevine drm is triggered by unlocking bootloader. You will lose hd for Netflix, Prime and I think Disney + it's getting less worthwhile imo but in stuck on the root ad removal.
Root isnt that important anymore IMO, I would unlock the bootloader though so you can install a custom rom in the future if you want
Edit: IN2010? Why are you using the Chinese model? Since you have IN2010 unlock the bootloader and change over from Hydrogen OS to OxygenOS, you dont want the Chinese Communists to have an easy way in do you?
honestly im on a 5t right now and i was wondering the same thing is root worth it and right now i just really think its not there used to be awesome modules and roms which was out main reason to root but im not moving away from oos cause its just that good and after unlocking you lose widevine l1 certification and google announced that the saftey net bypass will be fixed soon so no more banking apps or even netflix and the only thing i could think of that i gain from rooting was substratum and i think i can live with that the cons just out weight the pros
For me, android is to play, to install custom ROMs, mods, root,...
That is a beauty of android.
if i will use android phone out of box i will better buy iPhone
I have na in2010 as well but mine came with oxygen OS preinstalled not Hydrogen OS like some people say.

Did the box still had the plastic seal when you got it ?
I bet no, let me explain how things work with OnePlus, Xiaomi, Oppo, and others Chinese phones.
Chinese version of these phones are way cheaper than their US / EU versions, so people in China buy Chinese versions of the phones, flash the phones with the global software and ship it to you. They sell it at an interesting price, and they make a good enough margin since lots of people don't know what the downside of buying Chinese phones.
The downside is that China has its own set of antenna frequencies, so in EU/US you'll probably have issues with 5G, and even 4G sometimes. Most of the seller knowing that downside aren't upfront with it, and let's say it, most of the sellers lie about it, writing it's "Global version", so people think it has all the antenna frequencies... And when people ask if it has antennas compatible with US/EU, they say yes, just because some of the antennas in China are the same internationally. It's dishonest and it works well.
So keep at mind that everytime you have a lower price (like 80$ less or more) and it's not a discount from recognized US or EU sellers (like bestbuy or something), 90% of the time it comes from China.

It actually was sealed in the box plastic and everything. And very tightly sealed at that so I don't think it was rewrapped. Came with a north american plug in the box to which I thought was kind of weird.

If you got the same plug that the one in the pic, that means it comes from China and they rewrapped the box.
They get more and more organized.
In which region do you live btw ? US, EU, India,... ?
I live in Ontario Canada. And budy I bought it from was Russian

Oh ok, good to see you had no issues. The fact that it doesn't says Warpcharge means it's not the official charger, so the box has been opened to replace the original charger.
IN2010 means that it's the Chinese version of the phone, and even though your device has been flashed to global, we can't change the name "IN2010". So every IN2010 are manufactured in China, and shipped with HydrogenOS. And the fact that the charger isn't an official one is the proof that the plastic has been added.
Hopefully you won't have any problem with it .
I'll advice you to buy the official charger tho sometimes through the official website, because since it's high power charging, unofficial chargers may damage the battery.
Here you can buy it: https://www.oneplus.com/ca_en/product/oneplus-warp-charge-30-power-adapter
Actually just double checked the charger and it does have the official branding like yours. So the guy did a good job with it so far. Gave me his personal year warranty saying he will replace it if I have any manufacturing defects. Ie dead spots dead pixels screen burn. And even picked it up from his work place. Went for a walk an came back to the place he met me an hour later and he was behind the counter helping a customer. So I think I found at least a good reseller. Paid 950 cash CAD so still a decent deal. He had the 256 GB version but it was 1075.

Yup that's a pretty nice and honest seller. You'll be fine .
I warn users usually about the IN2010 model because because my seller forced lies down the throat of all it's customers, pretty bad experience... So I use my experience to prevent people from experiencing that too.
Have a good day
So backstory, I found a really good deal on Facebook Marketplace for a OnePlus 8T (US Version unlocked from Amazon) for $370. It's in excellent condition, is paid off, and seems to be the unlocked KB2005 model.
Since the phone is basically half off at that price, I'm super tempted by it. However, the other part of me almost wants to wait for the inevitable OnePlus 9/9 Pro announcements in March and maybe get that one of those on launch. I also had the idea of selling my current phone or the 8T if I'm impressed by either model. That's where I thought I'd come to XDA to ask for advice on what I should do, or if anyone has other ideas!
I currently own a 6T that I got on launch in 2018 and I absolutely love it. It still works well, but being a big tech enthusiast is making me start to get an itch to upgrade soon (especially since my dad just got a Galaxy S21 and was really impressed just helping him set it up).
Thanks all!
I also was on the fence with ditching my 6T for this one, but it's quite an upgrade in almost every way. Once you experience how fluid the screen refresh is, there is no going back. I scored mine on a trade-in promo. Wouldn't pay full retail for it, tho. Seems like a really good deal at that price point. 9 series is going to be very expensive at first, so factor that in. If anything, grab 8T and see if t-mobile is going to be running trade-in promos on them (9 series). You can always sell it on swappa for more if you don't like it.

You bring up a good point there regarding trade in deals. I'd also imagine that T-Mobile is bound to have a deal for the 9 Series. I got my 6T on their original trade in deal in 2018 where you could trade the OG OnePlus One and get $300 off the 6T. It was a no brainer, since I essentially got full value for a 4 year old phone.
Do you recommend oneplus 8t or is better wait?
Hi there, unfortunately my actual phone stoped working and I came back for my backup phone.
So I'm looking for a new phone and in this moment we can find Oneplus 8t for around $500.
Do you think that is a good deal? Or is better wait for a possible oneplus 9 lite with SD 870?
After watch and read many reviews, I did a list with the principal points. Can you tell me if the list match with your real usage?
here are the good things that I observed:
+Screen
+Battery
+Fast Charger 65w
+Dual speaker
+Oxygen Os
In other side:
- Others chargers doesn't look work well
- No SD 865 Plus
- Regular camera
last month traded my Tmo OP7T (with $90 balance, so i paid it off) with Tmo OP8T, paid $0 out of pocket, and it actually lowered my monthly by $20/mo. Tmo still valued the OP7T for $750. So, new phone, lower monthly
