Forcefully enable "5G Only Mode" - Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra Questions & Answers

Hi,
I'm looking to enable "5G Only" mode (packet switching to be more specific) on my Note 20 Ultra. I have tried all the apps available out there but the closest I've come is that I have enabled LTE Only mode (which works perfectly as it should btw). Most apps say that they can enable "5G only" mode but there are no options to do so in the menu.
Calling out all experts for their kind recommendations. My device model is SM-N986B/DS
PS. I'm looking for a way to do this without rooting my phone.
Best Regards.

You can by launching the hidden phone activity. For that you can you can download Activity Launcher, and search for "hidden", then open the phone settings one.
You'll the be able to use the select band only mode, and select all 5G NR only.
Il do it for 4G and 5G for when it'll come, and works flawlessly (it never goes back to 3/2G).

Hi, thank you so much for your reply. The thing is that I tried that and I couldn't see 5G NR Only option. And if I select "Band Selection Mode", then it displays the message "Fail". Screenshots attached for reference. Can you please guide me further?

You're welcome.
Sure!
You have to go to the hamburger menu then "Band Selection".
Here you select all the bands you want, then you turn the button on the upper right on. It will automatically select the bands selection mode afterwards.

Oops I screwed up with the screenshots
Here they are.

It "normal" that after the band selection mode activated, that the bands you selected doesn't show anymore.
But then in the network band mode, the band selection setting is now applied and working.

@Nastrahl
Thank you so much man. Okay one more clarity I need, lets suppose I choose the NR B77 Band in the band selection, then:
1. Do all the other technologies (i.e. 2G/3G/LTE) gets disabled and the "network connectivity mode" gets automatically set to "5G Only" ?
2. Will this mimic the same scenario when I choose "LTE only" mode in which the phone basically shifts to packet switching mode instead of the the regular circuit switching mode. (i.e. only mobile data is enabled, you can't receive or make calls in this mode)
Cheers!

Hi, no problem.
1. Yes in that case all except the technology (5G in that case) you chose and the band you selected is disabled. So it's the same as if you would have set the phone to "5G only" if that explicit mode was available.
I personally set it by selecting all LTE and 5G bands, to mimic a "only LTE and 5G" mode.
2. It depends if your provider supports voice over LTE to make calls without rendering back to 3G or 2G network.
In my case, I can use LTE for both so I didn't care about 3G/2G, that why I set bands selection to only LTE and 5G bands (the latter when it will be available in my country)
But some providers doesn't supports calling with LTE and needs to switch back to the older 3G or 2G to be able to. Unfortunately if you lock bands to LTE, calling won't work at all (only data), and about 5G it may also depend if they support it.
If they do it will work with bands selection mode, otherwise no.
Have a good day!

I don't own an Huawei phone so it may have a different name, or it may not exist on that model at all...
Unfortunately it could be a Samsung only feature.

I was able to launch the hidden after rooting my phone, please is there any way to lunch without root?
After selecting all NR I don't get 5G, I get (no service) meanwhile I am in the 5G area and I use to get 5G for some time like the attached picture.

LTE band select warning (Fix in Post 3)

So we all know there are many settings to play around with under the 3845#*850* menu. Under LTE there is a setting to select what LTE band you want to be on. I learned the hard way, DON'T touch those. Your phone will be on whatever band you select and will not switch bands automatically. I can't seem to get it back to the way is was before even with a factory reset so I;m just warning you guys.
Did you get this resolved?
I have done this on my VZW G3. Did you get this resolved? I selected b4 and b13 and now I that I see you'd thread I'm wondering if doing this will lock me out of the new Qualcomm band unlocking using QPST.

Yes I have found a way. This is with the d850 model so it may be a little different
1. Download the application Shortcut master found here: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.vndnguyen.shortcutmaster.lite
2. In the application, press the menu button and select "secret code explorer"
3. Look for the option that has "com.lge.hiddenmenu.updt.UnitedDebugToolReceiver" and press it then press explore
4. Next look for RAT_Selection with the description under it as "com.lge.hiddenmenu.lte_only.RAT_Selection. This one is about 60% of the way down the menu. Don't get it confused with the one that says wcdma in the description.
5. Once that's launched, Select Wcdma or CDMA only. Wait for it to connect, then select LTE only, wait for it to connect then select the multimode option of whatever network you're on (AT&T: GSM/WCDMA/LTE auto VZW should be CDMA/LTE auto)
6. To confirm no specific LTE band is selected, back out of that menu, then scroll down to "BandSelection" Do not go to "LteBandSelection" it will give you the wrong options. Once in the menu, it should say none selected and you should still be connected to LTE.

On my ATT device it would stay on the band you selected only and wouldn't automatically switch between them.
edit: try going to "com.lge.hiddenmenu.kddi_only.NetworkMode" change your network mode to Gsm/WCDMA then to LTE only then back to LTE/GSM/WDCMA and it should reset whatever you may have selected in the other menu.

So i have had this problem for a while. My fiance has a g3 as well and it connects to 4g lte. Hers isnt rooted but mine is. I have followed all of the instructions that you posted to fix the problem, but when i tap on lte only, a message box comes up that says failed, sane with automatic. When i tap gsm or wcdma, it says success. Any ideas what might be going on. Any help will be appreciated!!!
Here is the screenshot, sorry it took so long. Any one that I hit that contains LTE in it comes up with this fail message. The only ones that will show success are wcdma and gsm. Thanks for your time!!!

Scared the **** out of me... (Fixed)
I accidentally selected one of the bands, and it wouldn't automatically switch anymore. I have to say I have an unrooted D855. I came online to search and scared the **** out of me, and nothing I tried from this thread worked. I happened to stumble upon a thread teaching how to enable LTE on some G3 devices using this menu, and they said settings only last UNTIL REBOOT. So came my hope:
FIX: Just reboot.
Verification: I selected some band that has no 4G network at my location, 4G disappeared. rebooted. 4G appeared. Problem solved. Not sure why it didn't work for TS (maybe TS is rooted), but worked for me (unrooted).

How to Enable/Use LTE Band 4(1700/2100) To Use on GSM carriers 4G LTE With Calls!

Hi, first sorry for my bad english and this is my first tutorial
soo! lets start!
recently purshase a samsung s5 from verizon and i see the specs the lte bands are compatible with my network here in mexico(telcel)
soo i put the sim in the phone and he only takes 3G and H+, i go to options to change network mode and.... the problem is there no option for GSM/WCDMA/LTE, only Global, LTE/CDMA and GSM/WCDMA and for that reason dont use the band 4(1700/2100) to use 4g
i loocking for tutorials and no luck, i try the Phone Info menu(*#*#4636*#*#) and menu not pop up like other phone i have, thats why i make this tutorial to have 4g data for gsm networks and the most important you can make phone calls without change to GSM/UMTS or something like that
FIRST OF ALL I'M NOT RESPONSIBLE IF YOU BROKE YOUR PHONE FOR NO FOLLOW THE GUIDE
i have rooted with rick's rom v20 nk2 firmware i dont know if this work on other rom, soo let us know if this work in other rom or fimware BUT YOU NEED ROOT
if you have enable already the hidden menu then you can skip to step 2 if not follow step 1 to enable
1.you need to enable hidden menu: this can be done be modifyng in text editor with a program like root explorer, the file from this directory -----> /efs/carrier/HiddenMenu file
like i said with a text editor open that file and change OFF to ON and save, reboot the phone
2.when the phone fully reboot, open the phone app and dial this --->*#27663368378#
with that you enter in the servicemode
3.in service mode Select: [2]UE SETTINGS & INFO, then [1]SETTING, then select [2]SYSTEM, then [9]NEXT PAGE and then select [7]LTE BAND ON/OFF, then [2]LTE B4 ON/OFF, and finally [1]B4 Enable, need be selected like the image below:
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",

"lightbox_share": "Share",

"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
then restart your phone
4.now its fully reboot open the phone app and dial again ---->*#27663368378#
enter in servicemode again and select [2]UE SETTINGS & INFO, then [1]SETTING, then [1]PROTOCOL, then [2]NAS, then [1]NETWORK CONTROL, then [5]PREF MODE SET, and finally [7]GSM_WCDMA_LTE_ONLY and wait for the magic
when yor restart your phone says no service and pop up the menu dont service and tells you to change to global mode please cancel and wait for reception! if you change to global or other mode you need to do again the step 4 to put again in GSM/WCDMA/LTE ONLY
THATS ALL!:good:
NOTE: I WAS PLAYING IN THE LAST STEP BEFORE [5]PREF MODE SET IN THE [1]NETWORK CONTROL MENU, I CHOOSE [4]BAND SELECTION INSTEAD OF [5]PREF MODE SET, SOO IF THE STEPS DONT WORK LET ME KNOW TO ADD SOME EXTRA STEPS IF NEEDED

its not only 1700/2100 LTE, when you make a call the phone automatically change to 3g umts
thats why call GSM/WCDMA/LTE
with this you can use verizon samsung s5 like others gsm phone 4g
*#27663368378# doesn't take me to the Menu? Is there another way?
How do you set it back the way it was? Or how do I turn off the GSM stuff. All I care about is better Verizon signal.
Once I did this, my signal has been bouncing back and forth from full bars down to 3. Any idea why?
Any help in order to add the lte band 4 to my S5 duos sm-g900fd , I need because I use T-Mobile while I am in US.
Thanks
When I make these changes it still drops me to 3G on calls. Not sure what the deal is really. Was hoping for 4g/calls at the same time.

Try switching from sim use to nv use. It's in the service menu under rtre config.
The phone supports LTE Bands 2,3,4,5,7,13,17 and 20. I'll post back
Tried and so far, nothing stops my phone from dropping to 3g when making a call. Also, some of these changes cause speedtest.net app to think I'm about 5 states away from where I actually am. Switching back, it puts closest server back to Indiana.....
I am using T-Mobile on this phone so not having to have my phone drop data to make phone calls would be great. I wasn't able to get this to work, but would be interested in knowing if others on T-Mobile can get this to work.
Thanks

you need to check the bands, if there are compatible with the band of tmobile the process will be similar but depend of the bands and the baseband

i dont know because i dont use tmobile, but if the bands are compatible.....then sould be work
i tried this with Verizon branded s5 on T-Mobile and it did not work. It wouldn't even show up as LTE. Straight dropped to H+.
Is doing this the same thing as what 5.0 does in the mobile network settings? I upgraded to 5.0 previously and it switched one of the settings to GSM/UMTS/LTE which it was previously GSM/UMTS.
Does anyone know if running a custom ROM will resolve this issue?
Does anyone know if it's possible to enable Verizon voice cdma band on a gsm/LTE (t-mobile) model s5 ? Or is the hardware in the sprint/Verizon models truly custom?
I tried this on my g900v S5 running Ricks Rom. Step one change off to on resulted in soft bricking with reboot having a toast pop up saying systemui has stopped. Touch ok and it goes to the home screen then same pop up loops back to lock screen over and over.
How to fix?
In recovery-advanced-file manager, when selecting the efs file, nothing is in it to edit and it only shows "up one file" or something like that.
What should be checked under "mount"? There are checkboxes for Micro SDCard, Internal Storage, Data, Cache and system.
Thanks

Quick Guide: How to enable and use ServiceMode

Ok, since now we have root, many users wanted to know if they can lock onto certain LTE frequency bands using Samsung's ServiceMode. So here is a quick guide.
ServiceMode is Samsung's proprietary Engineering Mode, built within the TouchWiz framework, readily available on International variants, and some domestic like T-Mobile. It allows us to observe the RF connection, change certain RF related settings, and lock our phones onto specific technologies and frequencies. Sadly, Verizon has been blocking user access to Engineering Mode for years now.
So in order to enable access to ServiceMode on Verizon GS6/Edge you'll need to:
- Download Root Explorer
- Navigate to /efs/carrier/HiddenMenu
- Use TextEdit to open it (not text viewer)
- Change the value to ON (upper case), Save and Exit
- Restart the phone
Once restarted you can dial:
*#0011# to observe the connection
If you want to lock your device onto a specific LTE band (13, 4, 2):
*#27663368378#
- UE Settings & Info
- Settings
- Protocol
- NAS
- Network Control
- Band Selection
- LTE Band Selection
Here you can force your phone onto a specific Verizon LTE Band (13, 4, 2), or use LTE ALL if you have VoLTE (Advanced Calling) enabled as this will eliminate the need for CDMA radios.
To go back to default, go through the same process but at Band Selection make sure to chose AUTOMATIC.
There are a lot more settings here, you can enable AMR WB on UMTS if you use T-Mobile so you can get HD Voice on their UMTS layer, etc... Carrier Aggregation has already been enabled, so no need to tweak that.
If you aren't sure what certain settings and values correspond to, it's better to avoid tinkering. You're responsible for your own actions.
If you find this guide useful, hit the thanks button. :good:

So if you choose a LTE band, you'll be locked into 4G, and not able to connect to 3G or 1X?

Yes, that's correct. If Advanced Calling (VoLTE) has been enabled on your account, your voice calls will go through. Otherwise, make sure you select Automatic when you're done testing in order to get CDMA voice access.
What's the benefit of this? Wouldn't the phone lock onto the highest strength band? Hope that doesn't come across argumentative, I really don't know how this stuff works.
I locked mine to Band 4 and my crappy download speeds (2-4 Mbps) jumped to 21-44 Mbps. Went back to Automatic and it dropped back to 4 Mbps.

Typically the most popular roads with the most cars are the slowest, right? Now that Verizon has multiple lanes (LTE Bands), you can attempt to alleviate the congestion issue that you might be experiencing.
Also one of the side benefits of selecting LTE ALL (with VoLTE enabled on the account) at least in markets with solid LTE coverage, is the improved standby time, as the device isn't trying to activate CDMA radios.

So what you're saying is if you are connected to a high traffic band, your phone won't switch you over to a less used one automatically? Is there some sort of app or setting that shows the traffic on each particular band?
I'm not so much concerned about cell standby since it doesn't seem to be impacting me for whatever reason but if I can get better download speeds, that's definitely something I would look into.

Well it's up to you to figure that out. I've put the guide out.

Milan, can you try PCI cell locking (sector locking)?
Note 2 and Note 3 have the option in Service Mode but it doesn't work.
Also, I wonder if there is a provision to configure CA bands so that a desired configuration of uplink and downlink bands can be chosen.

PCI Cell lock has been disabled on every single Samsung phone that I can think of. The Menu is still there, but it's not actionable within ServiceMode.
As for forcing primary and secondary component carrier, that's typically set on the network side per cluster or per market basis. For example, in NYC market AT&T has CA set to Band 2+17 format, not the other way around. Can't be forced on the UE.
It would be beneficial for Verizon to have a wider bandwidth channel (band 4) set to be the primary as the upload isn't being aggregated and it's dictated by the PCC.

Thanks,
I wonder if PCI lock is a feature only possible on a special radio firmware. Perhaps field techs are running an enhanced radio on their test phones not available to the consumer.
I recall the FCC docs show that the S6 has various band combinations for CA on the uplink. So Verizon isn't planning on using CA on the uplink?
I am very interested to know their CA strategy because I am usually in an area where download speeds are acceptable on Band 4, but the uplink is nearly nonexistant on Band 4.
I usually have to use a device without Band 4 support or else my phone often jumps to Band 4 and the upload is about worthless. I can force Band 13 on Samsung devices but then I lose CDMA.
I actually would prefer most of the time:
Downlink: Band 2+4+13 OR 4+13
Uplink: Band 13
Didn't want to hijack the thread, I can edit post and take it to PM if you prefer.

I know for a fact that PCI lock is something that RF Field Engineers have access to, but they don't really use ServiceMode, or use it for a quick glance at the values. They use a third party software that directly reads and controls Qualcomm baseband, and that Android piece of software costs $5,000+ per license, and it's tightly integrated with the IMEI of that test phone. There are thousands of KPIs that can be read with it, or logged for post processing and analysis at the later time.
FCC only performs tests on the uplink to make sure the radiated power at the device under test is within the safe range, and since the existing Release 10 network infrastructure doesn't support Carrier Aggregation on the Uplink (only Downlink), FCC only lists the potential downlink CA combinations for the device under test. They actually don't test the downlink at all, and it doesn't mean that the operator will have all of those combinations enabled on the network side.
Furthermore, at this time there aren't any operators globally with a commercial network capable of uplink CA, that includes Korean operators. That should change with proliferation of Category 7, 10, and 12 commercial User Equipment at some point in the future, but commercially seeded user devices with Samsung, Qualcomm RF solutions (like S6, M9, etc) are only category 6, 9, not supporting uplink CA.
Your uplink issue may very well be caused by some kind of interference at your Serving Cell Site or clustered area. Which cellular market is it?
In my market I've seen peak uplink rates just under 40Mbps on Band 4 in a 20MHz channel, typically in the 20's.
As an amateur radio operator and general mobile telecom junkie a million thanks for this! I love having control over the LTE band I'm camping on. I've been in Denver all week and for whatever reason in downtown Band 4 was slammed (1-4 meg down) but 13 was wide open (20+ down), yet the phone insisted on camping on Band 4. Whambamthankyoumaam, hello Band 13 .

Yes of course, european SM-G920F, I live in Italy. I've tried with brand, no-brand firmwares, but none of them works
If you found those codes on internet, they must be wrong and nobody checked them before publishing...
I want to lock my phone in 3G+4G but I can't... that's so bad!

Here is the thing, the ServiceMode dial codes I'm giving you is something I've been personally using over the years. Codes also work just fine on 920T, 920W8, 920V.
You could try digging a bit into the file structure, or check out international S6 subforum. Good Luck!

Question 2G on A13

Can anyone who has already upgraded a Pixel 6a to A13 tell me if the "Allow 2G" option is still available in Settings-->Networks-->SIMs ?
Some people on twitter are saying that they cannot set 2G as a "preferred" network anymore, not sure what it implies.
The option is still here yes. However, you can't set 2G as the preferred network type.
Try this..
Open Dialer
type :- *#*#4636#*#*
Click on Phone info
Select Preferred Network type & Scroll Down & select "GSM Only"
Thank you guys.
Current situation is bizarre for me. I need 2G working for voice only. My carrier is switching 3G off, and I cannot have VoLTE working (despite the corresponding option being enabled and carrier saying that it should work). Currently, when I make a phone call, the 4G data connection gets disabled and voice travels over 3G or 2G. When the phone call is over, 4G data connection gets back on. Since 3G is being switched off, if 2G suddenly became totally unavailable, I simply couldn't make phone calls anymore.

Any chance of automating this with tasker?
I used "Toggle Network Type" app on earlier android, but not it can't set 2G as preferred type anymore.
Edit: actually it was Automate app that I used, but neither it nor Toggle network type work.
Not sure if you have tried enabling this option in the SIM settings (something to do with the Tensor Security settings as Google deem 2G to be less secure.
