Hi all, can someone verify this for me?
There are two cameras on the Mi Mix 3 yes?
One is the normal (wider) angle camera, and the other a more telephoto camera?
So, covering the top camera should give me a black screen (finger on it) when I use 1x zoom?
And switching to 2x zoom will give me a clear shot? (finger not on it)
I realise that this isn't happening anymore and 1x and 2x have images coming from the lower camera. Is this by design? Am I misunderstanding the idea of the two cameras?
Has the latest MIUI update broken something or was this how the camera works all this time?
As far as I can tell, every mode uses the bottom lens, regardless of zoom. Only portrait mode uses the top lens.
it's working fine, but i think you just need to go into pro mode and switch lens manually if you want to use tele, otherwise it's switching back and forth on it's own just tried it.
did more tests and it seems that the lens does indeed switch to the telephoto lens now once i zoom past 2.0x in the default photo mode. i also discovered that if it detects an obstruction in the 2.0x lens, it will fallback to the wide lens with a poor digital zoom. (I put my finger on the telephoto lens to check if it was working)

Hello the bokeh effect seems not working with front cam on my magic 2.
Can someone confirm?
Works for me, make sure you actually choose a type of effect at the bottom left of the camera.
hi the community i discovered something on the oneplus 7 pro there is actually a hidden zoom x13 i explain how to have it
so it's very simple, you go first on the application "phone" and you typed the code *#*#1597#*#* you will be in test mode of photo sensors then press 3x on the front camera then you turn on the x3 telephoto lens but, as you will see, the photo application will be in 1x format; just zoom in 10x and you'll have gained a 3x zoom : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nBgiz-VGa7c

Nice find
Interesting! Cheers
This doesn't seem to make sense to me.
When I open the camera app by itself, I can always select the 10x zoom.
And actually, now that I'm testing this, my bottom lens doesn't seem to be used at all, even for 3x zoom.
For example, if I launch the Camera app, press the "single tree" icon (3x zoom), and put my finger over the bottom lens, I can still see everything just fine, because it seems to be using the middle lens. Why would this be?
I'm on Unlocked 9.5.6.

Maybe it's the image stabilisation?
How is the quality compared to 3x?
It's strange because the Reno released a phone with 10x zoom, what if they were planning on releasing it here

if I understand correctly, the telephoto lens does not come on when you zoom in?
if this is the case you must be on the lens: back (double) (0) you have to press the front camera button 3 times to reach the rear lens (telephoto) (2) if you are in the mode available by the code

for me when i switch to 3x zoom with my finger on the telephoto its fully covered.
also 9.5.6. not unlocked.
The telephoto lens is used when you tap the single tree icon, BUT:
- it switches to the main lens, when the telephoto lens is covered by something
- it also switches to the main lens, if it's too dark
- and it switches to the main lens, when you are too near to an object (you can't use it as an macro lens because of that)

Thanks for the clarification. You can see the clear difference - and therefore that the lense is used - if you do the switch and then either move up your finger from the bottom or from the top over the lense

Thanks, I can confirm that it was switching when I covered the lens, and also WITHOUT covering the lens but it was in a very dimly lit room, so that explains it!
All this being said, you can still just tap the tree, then tap the 3x and zoom all the way to 10x without having to input the dialer code.
This code doesn't work for me
this code not working ?
The code works Fine. On OnePlus 7 Pro Oos 9.5.11 and it does what the op writes.
Works. Interesting
That would be 30x zoom not 13x.

Hi!
This may seem like a strange question. What does the camera on the back of the Mi 10 Ultra that looks like the periscope zoom actually do? The one that's in the "silver island"
I have had my Ultra since August, and simply assumed that this was indeed the periscope zoom, but this morning I noticed a very fine scratch in the corner of this camera. So I put it in 5x zoom, and saw that it didn't impact on the image. Then I realised that if I put my finger over this lens entirely, there was still no impact to the zoom!
So if we look from top, "Silver island" lens should be 5x zoom but covering it has no effect on any zoom level.
The next one down is the 2x zoom, interestingly if I cover this with my finger, it's mostly covered, but occasionally will jump to the main lens for a second or 2 for no reason.
The third camera is the main lens, this is also the one that is being used for 5x zoom and above, like they're taking a crop from that module as they did in my Mi Note 10 (and I assume the Mi 10 Pro, which I think is what the Ultra ROM is based off?)
And of course the final one is the incredibly poorly-positioned ultrawide
I've recently upgraded to Android 11 - MIUI 12.1.1.0 (RJJCNXM) so I've no idea whether this behaviour has always been the case, or if this upgrade has caused an issue.
I noticed that since the upgrade, the dots on the camera app for the "preset zooms" has gained a new option, a somewhat pointless 0.8x ultrawide which again just seems to be a crop of the ultrawide.
So, can anyone else test and confirm this? Has the latest upgrade "disabled" the periscope zoom?
Thanks
The periscope camera on Mi 10 Ultra is exactly what you'd expect, something as illustrated here.
It should kick in when you zoom by 5x and more within the camera app. However, I've randomly noticed (some months ago) that the app itself seems to behave in a way that if you zoom in over 5x and cover the periscope lens with your finger, the app will (temporarily) fall back to digital zoom using the main lens (3rd one from the top) even for higher zoom levels, because it assumes that there's something wrong with the periscope one.
In my experience, it would just automatically use the periscope camera when needed the next time I zoom, assuming it isn't covered this time.
If it doesn't, try to zoom like 10x and cover the main lens this time around, if it switches to periscope as it should.
Are you using xiaomi EU ROM?

Thanks for the reply. I feel like my phone is using the main 3rd camera for 5x zoom by default.
If I put the camera app into 5x zoom and cover the 3rd lens with my finger, the photo is obscured, if I put my finger over the periscope lens nothing happens
The same behaviour is displayed for 10x zoom, and any zoom up to 14.9x
However, once it goes into 15x zoom and above, you see "picture within picture" and the viewfinder does seem to be powered by the periscope, and the main 3rd lens is then responsible for the mini image in the corner, please see my attached screenshot, where I have covered the periscope lens with my finger.
So I guess what I'm wondering is...
1) Is my phone screwed?
2) Are 5x to 14.9x zoom shots taken with the main lens by default, by design or is this a bug?
3) Has this behaviour always been the case, or only since I upgraded?
I'm on Android 11 - MIUI 12.1.1.0 (RJJCNXM) which was an OTA update
If it's any use my baseband is c7-3033.23-0120_2103_79a330f and my kernel is 4.1.9.113-perf-gd722e10

Alright so I just went ahead and tested this (I use the EU ROM, but the camera app is just the same thing ported over).
What I found out is:
1. if I click 5x zoom in the camera app and autofocus is focusing on near objects (<1 meter), such as something on the desk I'm sitting at, it will default to main lens with digital zoom,
2. while still in the 5x zoom mode, if I turn the phone around and autofocus acquires focus on the opposite end of the room (~7 meters), the app will automatically switch to the periscope lens,
Which brings me to the conclusion, that:
1. the periscope lens has a minimum focus distance significantly greater than the main lens,
2. if you try to use zoom level of 5x and above, while focusing on an object relatively close to the camera (something up to 1 meter), it will fall back to digital zoom with the main lens, as the periscope lens is unable to obtain focus on such short distance
3. if you want to confirm this, avoid the automatic lens switching and make sure your periscope lens is operating correctly, you can use the Pro mode in the camera app, select the periscope lens manually on the right side (here it's called TELE 5X), and play around with it

Thanks so much for your help! Don't I feel a bit silly now But reassured that it works as I thought and I'm just an idiot
I have to login to my bank account and I need to scan a photoTAN image but the app by default uses the main camera which is broken, is there any way to make the wide screen back camera as the default one to be used by apps on my phone?
Any ideas anyone?
I'm also searching for the same issue but no answer
This post may give you an idea:
Change default rear camera?
Hey guys, My main rear camera is broken and I was wondering if my default camera can be changed to the wide-angle lens, because the wide angle lens works fine. The phone is a Moto X4 and it has a dual rear camera set up. So my question is...
forum.xda-developers.com
I mount the phone in a phone skope digiscoping adapter, then fit the adapter on the scope eyepiece. The magnified image begins to appear on the phone but then the phone switches to a different lens. The image on the phone is now a blur of color because the functional lens is aligned with the opaque part of the phone adapter.
Can the lens-switching feature be turned off so I can use only one lens in aiming and focusing the image?
Thanks
Doug
If i remember correctly, the "Expert RAW" application lets you choose the lens to work with and does not change to another lens.
Look for it in the Galaxy Store.
There might be other photo apps that also support "locking" the camera, but i'm not aware of (did not need this until now).
Pro mode in the regular camera app lets you pick lens/sensor and it sticks to it. Standard photo mode keeps switching but it sticks to the 108mp ("1x") sensor if you enable "3:4 108mp" mode.
Thank you
camera assistant app has the option to disable auto lens switching too.
