Battery is swollen, is the oled cracked? - Google Pixel Questions & Answers

Hello geeks, my og pixel's battery degraded gradually and is completely died now. I just noticed a slight split between the side of the screen and the frame (caused by the battery swelling). I know the oled is extremely fragile so I wonder if theres chances it is cracked due to the battery pushing it even though it's not that much swollen.
Thanks for your answers.

3rd-party battery bulge

I've read quite a few threads/reviews about 3rd-party batteries causing the battery cover to bulge. I've got such a 3rd-party battery and I can see the bulge. But the battery cover bulge isn't a big deal to me. The big deal to me is that my 3rd-party batteries actually cause the screen to bulge.
I never noticed it until I realized it was actually bulging. With the screen off, reflections aren't "mirror-like" as you would expect with a flat piece of glass. Instead there is a slight distortion. And then looking down the edge of the screen held at eye-level, the middle of the screen is noticably raised from the exterior chrome casing (which it should normally be flush with [which it still is at the top and bottom of the phone.])
Surely a bulging Super AMOLED screen should be more of a concern than a bulging flimsy plastic case. But I haven't seen or read any thread/reviews about batteries causing a bulging screen. Am I the only one experiencing this?

Is the battery itself bulging? If it is, I'd take that thing out right away. Stop using it and dispose of it. Bulging in a battery means that something wrong has happened.

That could very possibly be the case. I wouldn’t say it’s bulging, per se; more like swelling. I know bulging batteries aren’t safe, but I just figured with all the reviews/threads about bulging battery covers, that this was “acceptable swelling” (whatever that may be. Ha!) Also, I figured it was “acceptable swelling” because it’s not just one battery I have; I had five (5) Anker batteries and all five have exhibited this swelling. But I already threw away two of them a few weeks ago because the swelling was getting to the point of “bulging.” The remaining three (3) batteries seemed to be within [my perceived] “acceptable swelling” range.
To get an idea of what my batteries are like, read this thread (it’s not about Anker batteries for the GS4, but they are Anker batteries, nonetheless.) Just search the thread for “swell”
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2297345
I’ve decided to not use these particular batteries anymore. I’ve already contacted Anker about the issue (here’s to hoping that my batteries were from a 1st-run batch of lemons.) The batteries came with an 18-month warranty; I’ll be sure to report back on the replacements.

If anything, this thread can now serve to help others in regards to not only a bulging battery cover, but a bulging screen and bulging/swelling batteries.
Thanks.

I wouldn't say any degree of swelling is acceptable if it involves the actually battery itself. Don't want to risk that kind of stuff with my phone haha.
That's why only [email protected]#$ with oem accessories except for cases and screen protectors!
Sent from my Ssamsung Galaxy s4
Got the replacement batteries. The batteries lie flat and aren't swollen. They fit nicely into the phone. But per the general observation with various 3rd-party batteries being slightly thicker than OEM batteries, there is a slight bulge on the back cover. As for the screen, although the reflections now look "mirror-like" compared to what I was seeing with the swelling batteries, there is still an ever-so-slight, almost-unnoticable-but-I-know-what-to-look-for-so-I-know-it's-there bulge.
Looks like I'll be sticking to OEM batteries.
Seriously, I'm surprised I haven't seen other reviews/comments about screens bulging due to thicker [even non-swelling] 3rd-party batteries (I guess this thread can serve that purpose for others.)

[Q] Defective Replacement Screen

Looking for opinions.
Ordered my 5 on day one. It had a stuck pixel and a little bleed. Probably should have RMA, but wanted to wait a bit. As luck would have it I cracked the screen before I got around to it. So I replaced it myself with this:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00HKL3DEM/ref=oss_product
After 2 months use, the screen has rapidly deteriorated. I can even notice the defects in TWRP and on the boot screen. Doesn't TWRP kind of load it's own kernel? That kind of rules out any kind of software problems. Any suggestions for where to get a more reliable screen replacement? I sent the following to the seller:
Hi,
I carefully read the reviews on this product. Some claimed that the screen may not be OEM equipment and was not as pictured in the display. It seemed like a risk, but I needed a screen.
I have replaced many screens several of my devices and my children's devices. The swap was effortless. When I booted my phone with the new screen, it appeared to be a major success again. There were no dead or stuck pixels and minimal back light bleed around the edges. The only noticeable issue was a very bright area around the soft keys. Particularly on white pages.
The screen was installed in early April, and recently I have noticed it become gradually duller with an increase of bleed around the edges. Then yesterday, things got much worse very quickly. I noticed greenish bleed/band around all edges. The bright white around the soft keys is brighter. There is a 1/8 inch band around the top of the screen that is very dark. It is not very bright and the colors are dull. From previous experiences, I know that these are signs that it will only get worse.
One of the reviews talked about a similar situation: Looked great at first, and deteriorated after a month or so.
I would like to request a replacement screen for my Nexus 5.
Thank you.

Dying screen

I'm on my 3rd Nexus 5 in just over 2 years. I've had this one since November and I'm obviously well out of warranty now.
Anyway, the screen looks to be failing. It has developed a large green patch in the centre and the backlight isn't anywhere near as bright. This seemed to happen instantly earlier this evening with it getting progressively worse.
I had replaced the battery a few days earlier. So I've been back in and checked all ribbons are seated correctly.
Would a new screen fix this or is it a different issue that is creating these symptoms?
Could there have been too much pressure put on the screen when separating the battery from the screen? I know the battery adhesive can be stubborn.
There was a decent amount of pressure but it was fine for a couple of days. If it is the screen they don't seem to cost too much to replace. Just don't want to waste my money in case it isn't.
Since the issue is in the middle of the screen, I'd be tempted to try a new screen as the screen connections are at the top of the motherboard.
I have replaced a few screens with third-party screens. I noticed that these third-party screens are not as bright as the original but it was not very noticeable until I held a phone with a third-party screen next to a phone with an original screen.

Back glass panel question

So where I live it's been getting very hot weather wise. I've had the phone in a toughcase for almost a year, the phones 2 years old and pristine.
Few days ago thought I'd take it out the case and give it a clean, took it out the case today and one side has started to come up, it looks as though the adhesive is coming off due to the high heat.
Has anyone experienced this? And if so what did you do? The phone is out of warranty so can't get ir repaired by Sammy. I'm fairly proficient when it comes to repairs and what not.
I can obviously replace the whole thing as a long term solution, but is there anything I can do in the mean time?
Thanks in advance.
I would guess that the battery has degraded over time and giving excess heat and expanded a little. I would suggest to replace it (maybe with S7 Edge battery).

The battery is fine as I've looked at it and normally with battery swelling the battery life is dreadful but I'm still getting 17 hours use with 3-4 hours sot. The back panel fits on fine it's just the adhesive one side, I've checked battery health too and it's good.
You can buy the adhesive from various places and google will take you to various guides on removing the back cover, you need to heat it up enough to loosen the glue.

Hey so my old tabs display is going nuts

Hi so my old tablet is going crazy can anyone help me fix it I have attached a video I think the lcd has gone bad or my gpu is malfunctioning
Was it dropped, exposed to water or prolonged high temperatures?
The cam shake and overhead fan was far more annoying than the display
Nah I just left it suffocating inside my cupboard with my clothes for 6 Years

I just left it in my clothes for 6 years inside my cupboard and for high temperatures is 40 Celsius for 360 hours per year for 3 years fine to kill
The lcd
That's not high enough to harm a LCD.
Exposure to solvents will poison a LCD though, they aren't sealed airtight.
Obviously it didn't age well though.
Try leaving it run for a while. Do not leave in direct sunlight as that can fry them.
