Few questions about SM-N9860 (HK Note 20 Ultra 5G) - software updates, 5g, volte - Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra Questions & Answers

Hi guys!
What about software updates for this model? I'm on BRI CSC. All other models received new updates, what is going on with ours??
Can someone confirm 5G works on the 1 sim slot? someone said that 5G works only one the second sim slot instead of micro sd, how is it possible?
Can someone comfirm volte is also working on this model?
Thanks!

Our device gets the slowest updates. The latest one is still ATH1 with August security patch.
5G is currently not working with BRI CSC. If you want 5G you will need to install TGY CSC with July security patch. 5G only works in sim2 slot. It's a software thing.
Volte and wifi calling are working fine.

Im on BRI July ATH1 (Was originally TGY), and 5G is working. So I think it just has to be July patch, TGY or BRI doesn't seem to matter (?)
Updates are sucking so hard right now on this model... Think I might go for a Korean N986N and sacrifice the extra SIM slot.
Edit: Actually, I had the opposite problem. 5G on TGY July patch ATH1 was not working. I had to change CSC to BRI and flash BRI firmware.

I wonder why updates are so slow on this model

It wasn't working on slot 1 no. Only slot 2.
I have a feeling the CSC has to be specifically programmed to work in slot 1 (Snapdragon constraint maybe ?), and so maybe only HK networks have been added to CSC slot 1 list (only my theory).
Also the Snapdragon 865+ can only do 5G+4G when you have 2 SIMs, it cannot do 5G+5G with both SIMs in the phone. But I haven't tested 2x SIMs in the phone yet and whether I can still get 5G with dual SIM.

I was looking at Note 10+ HK (TGY) model vs Note 10+ UK (BTU) model on sammobile, and although the updates are less frequent they always seemed ahead on HK version. So maybe it's just a hiccup for now, and we'll get a nice update soon.
If you want to compare yourself

Just did a manual check this morning and the September patch came through for the N9860 HK TGY. So the ATI3 build has arrived!
300mb worth of updates, including camera, Internet and system improvements.
The update speed doesn't seem to be too shabby...

Got it too, downloading! Funny enough I checked just yesterday and there was no update! It says camera was improved so I wonder what exactly.
Anyway Exynos is still miles ahead with updates.
I hope Samsung will fix all this Exynos fiasco in the next year or two so we won't have to import phones.
Added: It seems they improved a lot the slow shutter issue in cameras. Good news!

Can you please try to see if 5G is working with this newest update? I wonder if they fixed it now.
Does anyone know if ATI firmwares are newer than ATH firmwares? Because there are ATH3-ATH9 firmwares and ATI is up to 5. I wonder if our phone just skipped ATH3-ATH9 and just jumped to newer ATI3 or if ATI3 is still older than ATH3-ATH9.

Can't check the 5G situation unfortunately as I'm not on a 5G plan and nowhere near a 5G area.

Does enyone have problem enter to recovery mode after september update? i can't enter via "volumeup+power" button, only can enter via adb command from pc! any solution for this?

Thanks, it seems they deliberately blocked it which is crazy. I wonder if HK users have the same issue. 5G should be available everywhere, what if someone travels abroad? They advertised 5G so heavily!

OTA updates outside of intended region?

Hello good people of the XDA forums,
I live in Canada and recently ordered a Galaxy A51 off of Amazon, only to find out it is apparently the Latin American version of the SM-A515F variant. Using my Canadian sim card, will I be able to get get OTA updates on this phone from Samsung or not? If it comes to it at the end of the day, I suppose I could live with manually updating with Odin (how that works I have yet to find out), but I'd definitely not prefer it. As of this moment I'm still stuck with the December 1st security patch and version A515FXXU1ASL1. I got this phone just this Friday and didn't even receive an update as I was setting it up, which certainly worried me.
Also, and on a related note, because this is the Latin American version, NFC is disabled. Is that something that could be changed as well/be fixed in the future?
Thank you so much for your help y'all

I am also canadian who purchased international version on purpose(easy to root international)as soon as i put in my sim i recieved an OTA notice.
Mine happens to be panama latin america. I recieved u2ata8 update. Whatever you do,DO NOT FLASH ANYTHING BUT INTERNATIONAL FIRMWARE VIA ODIN. IF YOU FLASH CANADA FIRMWARE ON INTERNATIONAL VARIATIONS THEN YOU WILL HARD BRICK. Also you will get odin fail if you have U2 in your firmware. Cannot roll back to U1

If I'm not getting prompted for similar updates does that mean I'm probably not going to be getting OTA updates? I believe my phone is the Panama version as well.

I definitely haven't gotten any updates. Is there any reasonable reason why I'm not getting updates but you are? I'm with Public Mobile, if that makes a difference. Would it have something to do with my sim card? The country code on my phone is TPA, which from what I've seen is the Latin America/Panama model.

I have read that after updating, 5G doesn't work
Currently there's build N9860ZSU1ATH1 on the updater
Since i will be rooting, should i update first or i will lose 5G?

This is good news.
5G currently doesn't work in the UK. Not sure if it's a firmware thing as I updated my phone immediately after initial setup.
Does it work in sim2 slot or in sim1 too?
For me, I would prefer the latest firmware over 5G as don't have any 5G in my area.

Conversion from SM-N986W to SM-N986U/U1: Still possible?

Hi guys, quick question... My good old Note 9 (Canadian variant: SM-N960W) is flashed with an unlocked/unbranded US firmware (SM-960U1), and everything's working flawlessly (Wi-Fi calling, VoLTE, OTA updates, etc.). The main reason I did it: Canadian carriers are useless morons, they take weeks/months to release updates, and I've been more than happy with the quick updates I get with the US firmware installed.
I would like to do the same with my Canadian Note 20 Ultra I will receive Friday, but I want to make sure it's still possible, with "Odin Patched", to flash a firmware from a different region on the Note 20 Ultra.
Someone on XDA did it? Did it go well, and did it break something?
Many thanks

Thanks for the heads-up, I didn't thought about 5G, but glad to hear it's still possible to do it (flash a firmware from a different region) without bricking the device. I'll probably pick faster updates over 5G for now, considering I live in the middle of nowhere and have access to LTE only anyway
I have a Rogers Note 20 Ultra, I will wait for the updates because here in this part of Ontario, has 5G for whatever reason. I really enjoy streaming Xbox games from the cloud. Almost no delay.
You should be able to flash U or U1 firmware using patched Odin. Just make sure if you have a carrier locked version (not sure if thats a thing in Canada) to have it SIM unlocked before flashing anything, especially if you plan on changing carriers ever. After going to U1 firmware, you can access the service mode menus to enable bands for LTE, NR 5G and DSS. Canada uses 5G bands n38, n66 and n71 and DSS. The only band I don't see available in the US firmware is n38, although it may be available under another CSC like WWD or GCF. I have included a screenshot of the bands I've enabled under the Verizon CSC.
Has anyone with an N986W been able to flash the U1 firmware yet?
Has anyone tried it already? if its possible to flash SM-N986W to U or U1

This can be fixed by flashing the home_CSC file of your carrier and then there are many other ways to fix this. So take this information lightly.

What he said :good:. Also you would be able to get on Beta on which a lot of 5G things were fixed / enabled so in fact that might work for you.
Only things i would want you to check before flashing the US firmware is:
1. Is it a dual sim phone? If No you are good.
2. Do you have E-sim Capability enabled? If No you are good.
3. What variant is your phone ? If Snapdragon you are good.
ohh if you are flashing US firmware flash the U1, no need to flash U firmware. Do check if you are sim unlocked because in case you are not and in future you want to sim unlock your device you will have to be on Carrier Firmware, if you plan to stay with your carrier for a long long time and or if you are sim unlocked this should not be of a concern.

Just as a heads up for future reference all Canadian new phone since December 2018 are Sim unlocked
For anyone still wanting to convert their N986W to US unlocked N986U1 I just wanted to say its possible. I used modified Odin and put the U1 firmware on my N986W. I was then able to install the 3 beta's. After a couple of days I switched back to the Canadian firmware. So for anyone wanting to try it, you should be good to go.

Hello,
I have a n986w (freedom locked) and i was wondering does every band work with u1? Or do we have to manually enable bands from service mode? And if i may ask where did you find modified odin and u1 firmware? And why did you roll back? I am still new to samsung phones, i had my fair share of modding android in past but sammy does thing bit differently so i am but confused about everything

Your N986W with freedom is probably not sim locked. I know mine isn't and someone earlier in the thread said that phones in Canada aren't sim locked anymore. So you should be able to proceed. When I switched to the U1 firmware I was receiving LTE signal on freedom. I did not test any other bands as I was just in my living room. There is a guide here on xda regarding enabling all the bands and there is a link to it from the thread I followed in order to switch to the U1 firmware. The link to modified Odin and U1 firmware is also in the same thread. The thread OP is warriorvibhu and its about switching from U to U1 firmware but you can follow it just the same and you can find that thread and the thread for sideloading the beta in the Guides, News and Discussion section. Sorry I couldn't add a link for you I have limited time right now. I rolled back because I just wanted to see if it could be done or not. The instructions were straightforward. Good luck and enjoy.

It did not trip knox as its official firmware. You will have to manually flash the betas. Also, when you get the U1 firmware, make sure that you download the one ending in ATID. That is the one required for the beta. I read both the guide for the beta flashing and the guide for flashing the U1 firmware before I proceeded. Also make sure you remove sim card b4 flashing U1. Have sim in when sideloading the betas and be careful you don't accidentally take an update between U1 and beta or you will have to re-flash ATID.

Hi,
I was wondering if its possible to flash US unlocked firmware onto the unlocked dual sim Taiwanese variant of the Note 20 Ultra 5G (SM-N9860).
There are certain features like Samsung pay that is somewhat limited for me because its still shows the region as Taiwan.
Of course I don't want to brick my phone but wanted to see my options in terms of changing the region to a US version.
Also, just to confirm, there is no way for this 5G variant to get 5G with US carriers, correct?
Thanks

I dont believe there is. You may be able to chop a csc together. But I'll let some one else chime in

Just use a VPN and make sure it's connected to somewhere in America and you should be fine.

VPN does nothing when the Samsung services are based on the CSC. I have PIA and Adguard but this will not work.

SAme question here.. can anyone help please? also can anyone help in this issue:
I am living in UK, have note 20 ultra 986U1. all 5g Bands are not active, on android 11 (UI3.1) there was a way to access to service menu and enable all 5bands. and I was using the 5G here. now, I updated, and that can not reach seavice menu to enable right 5G band. anyone has any idea what should I do? even I can not flash with UK rom, as UK rom is for Exynos, but mine is snapdragon. any other idea maybe? or other rom that works with my phone and also enabled 5G bands?
do you think if I just change the CSC , my problem will solve? if yes, which CSC I must flash and how?

SM-N9860 OneUI 5.0 beta

Hi! Has anyone gotten the OneUI 5.0 beta on their N9860 N20 Ultra 5G? I'm on the TGY CSC and even tried using a VPN to switch to other Members regions and have had no luck so far.
No, it's not available yet. Checked this morning.

Never buy this TGY, CHC or BRI variants of any Samsung's phone. Very very slow in updates.

Well, that's the price you pay for performance! Snapdragon is awesome. if you find it too slow why not change the CSC to Korea or stateside ?
Is it possible that we can change CSC of SM-N9860 to Korea or US ?

Yes, it is! As long the firmware is Snapdragon, not Exynos you will be fine I'm pretty sure all the info is here on XDA you will need to research it. it should be pretty straightforward as I've done it tons of times UK firmware changed to Germany CSC (Exynos) So i get quicker updates on my Note 9 & my Note 10+ 5G I haven't changed my Snapdragon Note 20 Ultra 5G as of yet been so busy i will change it soon as i would like to unlock all bands on my Note 20 Ultra 5G!

Can I flash US Unlocked firmware to my N9860? Or will I end up bricking my device? Both of them are Snapdragon Variant

Yes, you can brick your phone. Because the US version only single sim and N9860 dual sim, different hardware and software.
