Awful data connectivity for the last week (Houston area) - Updt "Desperation sets in"
Anyone else getting horrid data connectivity on their TB? I usually never have data connectivity issues. In fact I was running just fine on the same ROM as recently as last week. But about 4 or 5 days ago, it went to total ****.
It has gotten so bad that I can't use 4g for more than 60 seconds. 3g is somewhat more reliable, but seems to drop down to 1x regularly.
I'm in the houston area and running BAMF Forever 1.09.
Do I need to get a sim replacement or something?
Try a new rom... I was using BAMF and noticed the same issue. Switched over to SHIFTAO5P with a Imoseyan kernel and haven't had any issues. Much snappier than the phone was previously and I haven't had any trouble with 4g. No trouble with data at all actually.
I am having issues too. Especially in buildings where I had a 3 bar 4g signal before, I am now not even picking up a 4g signal. Also, the 3g signal only reaches a bar at best. Almost like an antennae problem or something. But again, it just started within the last week. Co-inky-dink? (Detroit btw)
Running SOAB 1.3 in North Houston area, data has been spotty for awhile now, but not awful.

i completely lost data this morning. dont know what happened. i switched to a rom i know was working and i am still having issues. i am at a lost on what to do, it must be a network issue

Yes, so, desperation sets in rather quickly when your phone internet is garbage, I suppose I must be an addict.
I tried many things today:
-Flashed old radios
-ReFlashed new radios
-Flashed new rom
-Flashed old rom
-Pulling/Replacing the battery (don't laugh, I told you I was desperate)
-Drove around the city testing various areas for connection quality
-Went into the verizon store and demanded a SIM card replacement
Perhaps the most painful of the steps I took was the last one. While they were replacing my SIM and giving me odd looks for having a rooted system, I meandered over to the Rezound station. Big mistake. I downloaded speedtest and android terminal, and repeatedly ran the bandwidth test and pinged google from terminal.
Consistent 75ms ping to google, consistent 27mbps down 11mbps up.
I tried the same thing outside the store with my TB, so I could take advantage of any network smoke and mirrors they may be using
My TB: Consistent 220ms ping to google, inconsistent 4mbps down 0.5mbps up
How depressing that was. Nothing has worked. 4g has been unusable for over a week now and 3g is slow as a snail, and only slightly more reliable. I am convinced I have a marginally defective handset and there is nothing I can do to get my 4G back except pay for a new phone.
I might buy my ticket to the TB haters' ball while I'm at it.
Just curious, but why didn't you unroot and turn s-on before going to the store?
Good question, I did think about doing that but ultimately my laziness prevailed. First of all, I am not a serial flasher by nature so I find it somewhat inconvenient to be constantly re-setting-up my accounts/contacts/apps/lookandfeel.
I justified going into the store because I knew if I played dumb and insisted walking out of the store with my handset in hand, that there was likely nothing that would happen. Never underestimate the complacence of an employee on commission who is doing something for you that does not involve earning a commission.

What radio are you using and does SHIFTAO5P have permission revocation as well as an uncrippled bluetooth stack (keyboard, wiimote, ps3 support).
So , I got my refurb on Saturday and I confirmed that the issue was hardware related. I did one final test to make sure. My setup was:
Both phones:
no SD card
stock GB MR (unrooted)
same sim card
Fresh wipe/update install
same battery
I installed Speedtest.net (Houston, TX comcast test server) and terminal emulator on both phones and sat in the same chair in my house for testing both phones (had to do 1 at a time due to sim card and battery, obviously).
My first phone (defective):
Speedtest server ping: ~220ms
Speedtest down speed: 500kbps
speedtest up speed: 400kbps
google.com ping: ~180ms, 5% packets dropped.
note: 4g connection indicator (in status bar) would drop randomly during speedtest, also about 2 of the speedtest attempts failed with "connection error"
Refurb:
Speedtest server ping: ~80ms
Speedtest down speed: 26000kbps
speedtest up speed: 9000kbps
google.com ping: ~80ms, 0% packets dropped.
no errors
Ran the test 5 times on each phone in a row, results were clear as day, my original unit somehow got ****ed up 4g hardware.

I have a similar issue as the OP. I was going to start a thread. My issues are a little more of the data connection on/off every 10 seconds. I'm actually flashing the newest shift AOSP now. If this doesn't go away... I will kill...
I'm having the same issues as both op and the poster in post #11. I may try for another refurb, but I'm not sure. I tried that route once before and all three were junk. I think this phone has turned into a major fail by htc.

I unrooted a couple weeks ago as I was rooted from launch date, started at mr1 and took the otas and the connection seems to be more stable for whatever reason. Even though I had run just a basic rooted 2.11.605.5 ROM with the ota radios.

I'm over in the NY area and ever since I woke up from work this morning I have been unable to keep a cellular data lock for more than 30 seconds (3g or 4g). I am rooted and am using a custom ROM, but I haven't changed it in nearly 4 months (haven't even updated it).
-x1
I wanted to bring out something I found while testing the newish 2.21.605.2 Verizon firmware. When I would use the native AP i would experience between 3-5 min of uninterrupted throughput and than coverage would drop into 1X forcing a full reboot to regain any sustainable LTE data.
The steps I took to resolve the issue were as follows:
1. initial change of ROM from ViperOne 2.x to GPe v.3.5.x and others. (NOTE: mentioning these ROM providers is in no way a shot at them, it is informational only)
2. reflash RUU of firmware 2.21.605.2
3. ordered new phone (not replacement or refurb: full retail)
4. leveraged WiFi tethering apps, specifically FoxFi and WifI Tether Router
The results were the same with only slight variances in time it took to drop to 1X. I would run SpeedTest and watch my connection timeout after hitting 25Mbps downstream and ending at .07Mbps or losing connection altogether.
The ONLY fix for me was to revert using RUU to 1.55.605.2. I was than able to flash ViperOne 2.x with only a little more than the normal boot time do to firmware mismatch. I now have full LTE with full hotspot and buffering almost nonexistent. Haven't seen 1X since.
My last comment will be to state this one fact about Verizon; I appreciate that they indicate that they will no longer entertain the option of throttling users of large GB of data, but I have seen a remarkable change in quality since 2.21.605.2, the tethering issue being the main one. I use upwards of 120GB a month in data via tether. I VPN into servers all day and yes I realize that is a ****load of data, but I pay for it so I choose how to use it. I firmly believe that what Verizon says and does are two different things and that we all need to closely watch what Verizon does to our phones. We are losing the freedom to do what we want with what we pay for. I refuse to be throttled, I refuse to be told how to use my phone, I refuse to be told my warranty is void because I rooted my phone. Without us, there would be no need for a wireless side to Verizon.
Off my soapbox. Any questions let me know, happy to help. I won't list all the phones I have had because its a long list.

While I can't speak for the m8 on this, I do not think this is Verizon doing it intentionally. I remember this issue a couple of years ago on the HTC Thunderbolt. The same exact thing would happen with WIFI tether. I believe the problem had to do with the kernel and not the firmware. I'm not 100% on that, but pretty sure.
I see you flashed the 4.4.3 RUU, did you test the tethering with that? Not sure if it would make a difference, but I'm sure that if others are seeing this issue, the dev's will find a fix.
I see I did fail to add that to my list, good catch.
I did do the same test after reflashing the RUU of 2.21.605.2 with the same results.
Kernel and Firmware work so closely together that its hard to really tell which causes the errors without serious debugging using perf or some other monitor to view the point of data rejection by the tower or if the driver actually crashes or kernel crashes or what.
The only thing i can say was that reverting is the only thing that changed the result back to a stable use of AP
I'm thinking about switching to cricket wireless. How is your general impression on cricket? Is it exactly same as att network other than different APN?Is it okay to put ATT in build.prop?
I heard their 4g is capped at 8M. Is it still enough to surf the web?
I would appreciate your input!

Yes it's AT&Ts network.
1Mbps is good enough for basic browsing. So it just all depends on what you do.

I am using d850 on cricket. Good att coverage. Data capped at 8mb, plenty enough for browsing. Fast enough for Pandora, youtube. One downside, you won't be able to get at&t Ota update.

Thank you for your help. I guess I'm fine with OTA update as I use a custom rom anyway. I guess I'm switching soon. Having a bit of problem with signal reception with D850 (like 10% weaker than other phones), I can't rely on a weak t-mobile signal anymore...

I speculate D850 modem driver is not properly written. When I was on stock, I consistently clocked in at 8mbps. The wifi is also consistently over 50mbps (I have over 50 mbps wifi at home). When I upgraded to Lollipop (20f, I think), data went straight to heck at 2-3mbps. Wifi became sporadic, at times, it would hit 50mbps, at times it would drop to 5mbps. So I reflashed and drop back down to kitkat, and the data performance is restored. The signal strengths are the same on both kitkat and lollipop.
D850 still seems to be better than iPhone 6, iphone 6 plus reception wise. In my office, an iphone could barely get 4G/LTE. I can still get 200-300kbps on LTE, though that doesn't mean much.

Wow that's surprising. I guess these smart 'phones' forgot what they really are... I reflashed Kitkat modem over lolipop rom but yes indeed the signal strength is still poor. I'm at least glad to know that this isn't me only.

I've been with Cricket / AIO for about two years now and I love it. I have saved a ton of money on my monthly service and have had zero problems with the network speed. The data speeds are capped, but I can tell you with utmost confidence that it has not affected my ability to browse or stream. I stream Youtube, Netflix, Hulu and other video services in HD with no hiccups or slow downs. I've also used Skype without any problems.
The only downside is no OTA's, but if you flash custom roms this will not be an issue for you. I seem to recall reading that if you pop in an AT&T sim card, you can get the OTA's if you want them, but I have not tried this and cannot confirm.
Does anyone know if their is a way to flash an OTA?

I can confirm, at the minimum, you can flash to 20f. I bought an AT&T Gophone sim card (about $2 for micro on ebay). Just activate the card, no need to put any $ in the card. Once you activate the card, you have 26 days to top up with any $ before the card is deactivated. After activation, insert card into your phone, turn on wifi, update began almost instantly for me.
I was able to update only 20f. I think there was a 20l with Volte, but I wasn't able to get that. Never had the chance to get 21q (current version). Read somewhere, to get 20l, 21q, your imei must be in AT&T database. When I activated the sim, I entered 000000000. If I ever try ota again with a new sim card, I'll input my correct imei and see if I get the other updates.
Cost to you is about $2-$5 (depend on availability at ebay and amazon).
On Cricket, no problem. On 5.11 using CM 12.1, so updates from AT&T no problem. Also you can flash stock ROM if you wish.
I'm also on Cricket. D850, NOT unlocked, running rooted Lollipop. I used to be on Boost Mobile, and I loved their service, I only switched to Cricket because I wanted to use the G3.
*raises hand* I call the UK constantly from the US. With Cricket I get 10GB of data and 1000 international minutes for 70 dollars. Cricket is owned by AT&T.
The only downside is that they cap their 4G data to 8mps. That's plenty for me, but your mileage may vary.

What I would like to do is just present my situation and get anybody's thoughts on it.
I have a Nexus 5 running LP with cataclysm rom. I am on the Sprint Network. I live in Rexburg, ID and have a good LTE connection and 3G, but Sprint Spark is not available in my area. I'm on a sprint plan that includes unlimited data.
Okay so basically aside from 8-10am ish, at any given time my LTE speeds (shown with ookla speedtest) are at about 0.30 mpbs, not 30, but 0.30. Recently I decided to follow a tutorial on here to enable the sprint spark network band on my phone (even though spark is not in my area). Going into *#*#3282#*#* I went into LTE, Edit, and after I changed the priorities of the 3 bands so that band 41 was the only one set, I hit back to reboot my phone and tested my speed. It was at about 6.00 mbps. I didn't know what was going on but I thought maybe i "fixed" something and that now I could enjoy faster internet. Well, after a bunch of speedtests, it eventually went back down to 0.30 mpbs.
Fast forward to now. Essentially whenever my data speeds are slow (0.30ish mbps) I simply go into *#*#3282#*#* > LTE > Edit > I don't need to actually edit anything, I just hit back to reboot my phone, and I get fast speeds again, the highest I have gotten was 12 mpbs, and sometimes the fast speeds stay for hours, and sometimes only minutes. My uneducated guess is that when i do this reboot, my phone is switching towers or something and is connecting to one with less traffic and faster speeds. Not sure, but something is obviously happening.
Does anyone have any idea what is happening and why I see such an increase in speed whenever I reboot my phone from the LTE > Edit page? Am I being throttled? Is there anything I can do to make these fast speeds "stick?"
As of now I simply do this little LTE > Edit page reboot before I decide to stream something or use data on my phone. But I would like to figure out how to have fast speeds all the time.
Hi all. I've been a long time Nexus 5 user and lately, my LTE speeds seemed to have come to a crawl. Most noticeably at work where I used to get good speeds easily. I thought it may be my SIM card going out so I went to T-Mobile and replaced it but it didn't seem to change anything. I was told that since it's an older phone, it may be looking for those older towers that T-Mobile has been updating which the Nexus 5 doesn't have the bands for. I've attached some screenshots of some speedtest results I took. When connected to 4G, it was crawling. Switching to 3G gave me faster speeds.
And I have looked into APN settings. They look to be the right settings for T-Mobile. Since it's a Nexus, I thought about flashing different radios and seeing if that does anything. Haven't tried it yet though. I was just wondering if anyone else has been experiencing this as well.
