Ok I have the bootloader unlocked.
I was hoping then I could do the following
ADB Debugging on
adb reboot bootloader
fastboot boot twrp-3.1.1-1-fastboot-sailfish.img
But its not booting it. Pixel TWRP Image
So my question is can i modify the image to make the pixel 2 boot it?
Please advise?
Can I root without using TWRP?
Thanks,

What makes you believe that TWRP for the original Pixel will work on the Pixel 2? Likely you'll have to wait for a recovery for the Pixel 2.

Yeah I understand that. I was just hoping that since they are so similar it would work. Especially since I am not going to install it on my recovery just boot it to root and suhide.
I wanted to make sure I wasn't missing something or something I could change in the image to make it boot on a 2 .
Thanks though for your thoughts!

The similarities are only on the surface my friend. When dealing with computers, similar and close is rarely good enough. You need exact.

The MSM in them is totally different. Plus panel config, clock plan, power grid etc. Your original recovery kernel will not boot on Pixel2, so this is completely expected.

Yes. I agree. Might be me right. I wasn't planning on flashing recovery though just booting it.
If you are feeling adventurous (as it seems you already are!) you might try the twrp-3-1-pixel-bootable-mod.img located here: https://androidfilehost.com/?fid=745425885120753892 ? I used the instructions at https://forum.xda-developers.com/pixel-xl/how-to/guide-how-to-systemlessly-root-pixel-xl-t3660324 to root the 2016 Pixel (not xl) and if I upgrade to Pixel 2 might try that. You might just try fastbooting the twrp img referenced there and then flashing the supersu referenced there without the other modifications GroovinChip did. Again you are taking a risk trying this on "dissimilar" hardware.
If your bootloader is unlocked and you want root.
Try installing Chain fire's Supersu from the play store or install the apk.
I do not have my P2 yet to try.

I think this may be a waste of time because it was modded to work on Oreo. They have already released a version that works on Oreo 3-1-1 that I already tried it wouldnt boot it. I will probably just wait even though i want to play. So i guess I can just say yep I have a pixel 2 with the bootloader unlocked and thats about it.
This can't come quickly enough - I always take my Ad Blocker for granted until it's not there anymore :'(

Yeah, I take having root completely for granted. I guess I've never bought a phone right at the moment of release before. If I didn't really need a new phone, I suppose I would have waited. Anyway, I figured out that you can block ads, without root, with apps that run all your traffic through a vpn (that's really only running locally on the phone). The best options after much research seem to me to be Netguard and AdGuard (though I haven't tried them yet). They both also include a firewall (Netguard is primarly a firewall), which I want.
https://github.com/M66B/NetGuard/blob/master/ADBLOCKING.md
https://adguard.com/en/adguard-android/overview.html
DNS66 also seems to be higly regarded, but it doesn't include a firewall. There are other firewall only apps, which work with the VPN method, but you can only run one VPN on Android at a time, so if you want both functions, without root, you need an app that does both.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/android/apps-games/app-dns66-source-host-ad-blocker-root-t3487497
Anyway, that's my plan until root comes along. Then I will go back to AdAway and AFWall+.
There is no kernel source released for the Pixel 2/XL yet. It is based on the 4.4 kernel, this should make development very smooth.

Hello guys, i need help i can't install vance yt because the turn on/off miui optimization is gone in developers option. I recently updated my poco x 3 pro 12.0.2 global to 12.0.4 global after update its gone. I can still search it but i cant find it once im in developers option. Any advice or help will kindly be appreciated.
Tried formatting/ download latest package/choose update package .
Still the theming and turn on miui optimization gone.
@cwapasion Are you using Xiaomi.EU ROM? If so, they completely disabled option for turning ON/OFF MIUI optimization for end-user. You can enable it by using any Android terminal, Termux for example, as superuser, but you need to be rooted.
If you're rooted, paste these commands into terminal:
su
setprop persist.sys.miui_optimization false
Then Optimization settings is back in the menu. By the way, Youtube Vanced doesn't require you to turn off MIUI optimization for a long time now. Are you using Vanced Manager from their official site vancedapp.com?

Is there even a way to install a Xiaomi.EU ROM yet, without TWRP?
Anyway, I tried using Vanced Manager on MIUI 12.0.4 and I was getting a "permission denied" error when installing anything from the Vanced Manager, I could install microG manually but installing Vanced itself was a no-go, until I disabled MIUI optimisations. Only then it went through. It's the recommendation I got on their Discord server as well.
What's interesting is, why the option to toggle these optimisations has disappeared for OP, but I still have that option on the same MIUI version... Region related??
POCO X3 Pro Global V12.0.4.0.RJUMIXM
POCO X3 Pro EEA V12.0.4.0.RJUEUXM
OP has Global version, in Europe there is EEA rom.
I am curious what other changes have been made in software by Xiaomi?
@TheReduxPL Well crap, I've mistaken OP's phone with regular Poco X3 NFC model. It complicates things, then. But, there's ADB workaround for this, which should work.
Check it out, OP @cwapasion

Sorry to hear that, I didn't realize it won't work without root access. I just did the quick search ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ It seems like you would need to "su" first (I'm not 100% sure if that's the case though, maybe something else is to blame) which means your device needs to be rooted. But, since there are no custom Recovery for this phone yet, we all have to wait.
@urbanman2004
The best idea is to wait for any official/unofficial releases of TWRP or other recovery projects for this model on XDA thread/s or other forums.
Also, don't forget to start unlocking your bootloader. With Xiaomi timers, you can wait some time ツ

Ok here we go. I bought this new. I did a deleted Magisk which I should of not done. Somehow the root is screwed up. I am trying to get in the phone to restore it to like I bought it. There was an issue when I bought it with Magisk. Something about it needed to be an app. Anyway, When I do a reboot I have a choice of Reboot, Recovery, Soft Reboot , Bootloader. I want to flash a rom again and fix the Magisk so it has no errors. I have read and tried the different way to do this. I installed TWRP but cannot get it to come up on a boot because there is no home button on my phone. Any suggestions?
You can start from scratch and install the official ROM that's supposed to be on your phone via miflash
Then you can start fresh on ROM of your choice and clean install of twrp and magisk etc

I was wanting to unroot the phone and it was supposed to unroot it when you uninstall Magisk. There already was an issue with Magisk from the start wanting it to be an app instead of a system app. Things went down from there. I have fastboot, recovery on it now. Just want to be able to download some apps that won't install because of root detection. Now I have a corrupted root thanks to Magisk.

You don't sound like you have put in much effort tbh
You should read more and watch some of those video tutorials before doing things that break your phone
The phone is not bricked. I cannot find the firmware for this phone. Weird. I have looked a a lot of firmware and cannot find one for this phone. it says M11 Ultra and Redmi Note 2 (hermes) the Android OS is 10 but the hermes I see are 5.0. Too old os. I do watch the videos. When I got this phone it already was not right with the rooting it came with. I did not want rooting because I cannot download certain apps I use. I went through the steps to delete root through deleting Magisk but from there it went to ****. The phone works. But there is corrupted root and fastboot keeps tapping out when I boot to it. Also Magisk was updated to 23.1 at the start and there was a conflict with that. Had I known this phone was rooted I would of never bought it. Also not sure if bootloader is open. My PC sees it just fine communicating with the phone through a program I have not figure out. What I have tried does not work. I don't need an ass chewing here. I just asked for some help. Thanks

MTK6595, not much hope of resolving this without getting hold of seller and finding out the ROM producer and probably flashing again on a formatted system ( there are so many but a search on a browser may help). Flashing MTK systems are not hard, just need the correct ROM and leave it unrooted using SP flash tools. There are plenty of rooting bids for mtk's, so may be you can unroot too using the guides from a browser search. Unless you can return as an item not as described for a refund.
Hi Guys, so recently bought my P7P, a week ago.
Its on january update, rooted with magisk and all that.
I was wondering, whats the correct procedure to update it when the february update will pop (still didnt get it)
can I just accept the OTA and then flash again the init_boot? Or do I have to flash original init_boot, update, and flash patched init_boot? will that lose all my modules and configurations?
I've tried searching info about this, but i'm finding different methods and I dont know which one is the correct one.
Thanks!!

No you don't need anything, however you will need to re root. But it won't close bootloader so you won't need to wipe.

Make sure you select the option to not lock bootloader. Also this is directly from Google that's why I use it over pixel flasher

Use pixel flasher and you can maintain root at the same time as you update
Instead of going through everyone's answer, just click the link and read the thread thoroughly
GO Here for Pixel Flasher
