Does the FP scanner lean over time? - Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra Questions & Answers

I am just trying to figure out if the FP gets better over time.

Yea it starts leaning a little to the left. Just register the same finger twice from slightly different angles and it's almost flawless without the screen protector on.

Learning. Lol

I was really scratching my head about the title of the thread If only there was an option for OP's to edit/correct the thread title, no?
I still have the pre-installed screen protector on the phone. I don't notice any effect on the FPS. My fingers gets recognized almost instantaneously.

What's the trick you are using that works best? Any youtube video or tips you guys can offer?

Register one finger from different angles to two fingerprint slots. So i have both of my thumbs registers twice from different angles and it works flawlessly. Used the same trick on Note 10+ too.

[Q] Pinch-to-Zoom issues?

I just got my Gtab about a week ago, put some vegan on it and I'm loving it. I just have one issue, and I'm wondering if I got a defective one.
For the most part touch sensitivity is great and I don't mind only having two touch points, but occasionally (30-40% of the time) when I try to pinch and zoom, it doesn't respond at all. I tried the multitouch tester, and it looks like anytime two fingers touch at the same time it struggles to recognize both touches. This is anywhere on the screen, not just two fingers close together. I've tried using the touchscreen fix app but its always the same.
Is my unit bad, or is this how the Gtablet always behaves? If it is, its not the end of the world, but I'd like to know before my exchange period is over.
I have found that if you are going perfectly horizontal in landscape mode, or vertical in portrait mode, the device struggles to pick up the multi-touch, however it works great in any other angle. discovered it playing sliceit
Mine doesn't seem to be affected by the angle. As far as I can tell it's a total crap shoot.
Have you tried pressing one finger first then resting the other on the screen a small amount of time later and then continuing with the pinch zoom maneuver? I found that this trick gets it working every time. Oh and don't have your fingers yo close together; half inch or so.

Additionally the cleaner the screen the more responsive the multi-touch, single touch. a few smudges, and its a crap shoot. I keep a oakley glass cleaner in the case, and am constantly buffing the glass.

Fingerprint doesn't work so good

Hi, I have just bought my new S7 and setup my fingerprint on it.
I didn't have fingerprint on my old phone so I can't compare it but I find it really inaccurate..
It gives me alot of wrongs if I am not landing my finger perfectly centered and sometimes even when it is, its still wrong..
I have tried to reassign fingerprints which does improve it for that couple of minutes but later on when I grab my phone and try to unlock it I get so many wrongs..
Is it just me? or any one else find it frustrating?
Any tips to improve it?
Thanks.
Mine never has issues, if your hands are clean and not prone to being sweaty then I would exchange it.

Unlike naturally how we expect it to work or how the other sensors like iPhone's, Nexus 6p's etc. works, with Galaxy S7 you should be careful when registering the fingerprint because of the relatively small surface area of the sensor. To make it clear, you can cover almost the whole finger print (considering the relatively large rounded shape of the sensor) in various other devices. While in the case of S7 you should only register the fingerprint in the way your finger will naturally positioned when unlocking. In my case considering the thumb, only an edge of the thumb will only get in contact with the sensor not the the center part or the other areas of the print. So just register the print in the way you normally hold and unlock the phone not keeping in a flat area and registering. If this works there is nothing wrong with the sensor. Otherwise you gonna need to replace the unit.
PS: Correct me if I'm wrong @cadcamaro ;-P
try registering same finger 2 or 3 times, this helps a lot increasing the accuracy of the scanner.
tip and sides of the finger is very important when registering

I personally set up my thumb when my phone is in my hand already, I also make sure that I move my thumb around and read as much of it as possible.
Thanks for all of your tips!!
I don't think my sensor is defected, it works after all..
I'll try the trick for registering only the tip of the thumb which indeed is what usually presses the button.. in fact I did register that part but not only that..
And about the register more than one time the same finger, does this thing actually recommended?
I mean its kinda ruin the machine learning of that thing.. it gets 2 different fingers that looks alike isn't it?
For me, using the thumb only works if I use/register the center of the thumb. The tip never works, but I can live with that. Center always works
works perfectly for me. in comparison to my S6's finger print sensor, this one is 10x better - faster to recognize and unlock and much more accurate.

I actually like the fingerprint placement

I honestly like the fingerprint placement on the S8. It's only my second day having the phone and I find It very comfortable believe it or not. And having a case or Dbrand skin ,like MKBHD mentioned, makes it even easier to distinguish from the camera lens. As soon as I pull out the phone out of my pocket and it's unlocked. What does everyone else think? Again this is the regular S8, I can't speak for the plus model.

Been using FPS since Wednesday and I don't have an issue with it in terms of location and usability with either hand. It's all about repetition going from using a thumb print vs an index finger to unlock the device.

It's not bad on the regular s8. I tried my friends s8+ and it's more challenging for me. You have to shift your hands in order to reach it -_-
I'm sure you could get used to it on that model, but yeah, with the regular size it's pretty good.
I have the S8+

Thanks i agree not sure why the media is being so absurdly picky about the FPS it's not that difficult to use.

Yep...i have the spigen tough armor case and have no issues with the placement of the fingerprint scanner. I also LOVE the fact that it can go from sleeping to unlocked with the scanner without having to press the power button
Yes! I love that feature been using it heavily

Coming from the Pixel XL it definitely isn't as easy. I feel like the size of the reader is too small. It doesn't work every time like the Pixel did. The area for the sensor was much larger and round. All in all i don't mind it though, and still better than being on the front. S8.
I'm using the Samsung Alcantara case with the S8+ and haven't had an issue at all. Easy to find, easy to reach, quick to unlock. I also use it with Samsung Pay and Last Pass pretty often and haven't yet found it challenging. I was concerned before I got it since just about every single review mentioned how awkward it was, but no issues here. I don't have large hands, but maybe I just hold the phone differently by habit.
I'm using the wee little baby S8, the fingerprint scanner is exactly where my pointer finger rests on the back of the phone. I use a case, so that really helps. I find it to be much more reliable than the one on the S7 edge, and I love that it turns on the screen.
It is much easier than I thought it was going to be after the reviews that I read (S8)
Whether the camera lens will get filthy pretty quickly we'll have to wait and see.
It's ok on the regular S8 but it feels less responsive and slower than the Note 7 scanner to me as I have to rehit it a few times. I am finding facial or iris recognition is so much better.
Some reviews are solely basing their opinion on this FS position and giving it a less than stellar overall rating.
I got the Galaxy S8 Plus, and my finger print button works flawlessly. I really love the placement of the button, but I'm a left hand user. I'm a happy camper.

I wouldn't say i like the placement but its no longer such a deal breaker. before actually having the phone all the negative reviews dont mean anything to me now. Once i put a case on i never misplaced my finger and it works flawless.

Yes it does. I've used it many times and never a fault

Without a case, I still find it comfortable for my right hand pointer finger. I've gotten used to it, after a day using it. I'm on the + and it's not bad at all.
I don't like the FPS and it's position.
Under the camera would be much better and the sensor is to strict. It unlocks only if the whole finger is on the sensor but with my honor only a part of my part is enough to unlock. It's still secure but much faster. Swiping down the status bar with FPS works much better with my honor 8 too.
I'm left handed, so it's a bit more uncomfortable. However, it's much less of an inconvenience than I thought it would be and I use it often along with the Iris scanner which works incredible well. I thought I wouldn't use it at all, but it's definitely functional and usable, just not ideal. I'm using the S8.
It's all about how you grip the phone and how your hand size is.
I can comfortably hit the sensor with both left and right hands on the S8+, yes the large variant.
No other member in my family likes the position. So I'm in a minority here.
A better "universally" comfortable position would have been better.

Onscreen fingerprint reliability

Hi
I’ve had my vivo nex s for over 2 weeks and found the onscreen fingerprint unreliable. At times it works perfectly and then at times very fustrating it doesn’t work at all.
I’ve noticed when it’s warm or I’m outside, not sure why.
I’ve reset my fingerprints added couple of times for the same finger but that doesn’t help. I’ve noticed when phone is heated it’s less reliable and doesn’t work at times.
Not sure if it’s faulty or that’s the experience of most out there
Please share your experience and do you think I’ve got faulty set.
Absolutely no problems with the fingerprintscanner.
I've double registered my fingers and it's working perfectly.
Sometimes it takes 1 second but in 99% its working nearly Instant.
Perfect!!! And with a screen protectors or tempered glass? Co.okie4u you have a private message!!!
I also have my moments with the fingerprint scanner. The elite X3 scanner was more a hit than a miss compared to this phone. I will say the it has improved with the 16.5 update but it needs more work. It's as if the registered fingerprint file gets lost.

Yes, double registering your fingers does the trick. Works flawlessly over here.
How you double register your fingers? Each finger for twice saving? Thanks
I have registered my thumb 3 times and im around 75% when i hit the fingerprint reader.
My main problem asides from the 75% is that its a very small spot on the screen and that i often dont touch it 100%. That, combined with the 75% reliability, means im lucky if im at 50%
As i said absolutely no problem with the fp scanner.
Even when only my half thumb lays on the spot. I think it's a registration problem. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
May be but you have registered 5 fingers? In each save one finger? Or 1 finger for 2 saves
Please Co.okie4 you have an unread private message since 2 days from me, can you read it? Thanks

I have the same finger registered three times. How I managed to do that is place the finger not on the entire scanner but place the finger on part of the scanner to where you can still see the scanner light. Also use the edges of your finger on partial scanner. I kept trying and it worked. My misses are now less. This shouldn't be the solution as it should just work, but that's one way to get around the problem.
No problem for me.
The only issue is its a little slow when compared to generic finger print, but the awe u get by people around is totally worth than extra second.
Just be aware that you have to follow the instructions as stated on the screen. Use the pressure you would use as usual and when you are registering the edges of your finger grab your phone as you would in real life and with the same pressure as you would use.
I found that if you do this too lightly or too hard you will not recreate it in daily life and hence the failure.
Also register the edge side of the finger that you would touch the screen with, not the entire edge left and right

Fingerprint sensor - anyone else finding it extremely bad?

I'm trying to find out if my device is faulty as the finger print sensor is extremely inconsistent.
Previously capacitive finger print sensors I've used have pretty much been flawless unless your finger was dirty or wet, but I'm getting far too many failures to unlock the Fold2. I'm either greeted with "No match", "Cover the entire sensor" or "Wipe the finger print sensor" messages. It's very temperamental - I can click the button to turn the screen and keep my finger in place and it will give me "No match", if I slightly raise my finger off the button and rest it back on the sensor with my finger in place it will unlock....
I have registered this finger (index on right hand) 4 times in the settings. I can test my fingers in the biometrics section of the app and it seems to register a print every time so it looks like it's an issue with how the sensor works when actually unlocking the phone.
Works fine here, but disabled it. The placement is ridiculous!
/CK
Same thing for me, works fine in apps and elsewhere but unlocking the screen is as frustrating as hell..... had the same issue with the S10e but hoped they had improved things. On research (since the S10e) I believe this only affects certain types of people like me with certain types of skin/fingerprint characteristics. Rear fingerprint scanners are no issue for me at all, it's just side mount !!
It took some getting used to but I like it now. I do wish they where up higher.
I noticed that the way I hold the phone and the placement of the sensor had me using the side of my index and thumb rather than the center of either. I put both in again while being careful to use the side rather center of my finger and it works fine now. Another thing that's a little of a push is that you can set it to always hot which helps. The push part comes in because you can trigger it enough while simply holding the phone that you'll max your attempts accidentally and have to put in your password.
Works fine for me, but as others say, the placement is awful. Holding the closed phone in your hand the way you normally would and you touch the sensor causing the 5 attempted unlocks to kick in so I often end up needing to use pattern unlock.
Works much faster than the Z Flip. But the placement is terrible.

I am not sure they could have placed it anywhere else.
An in-screen one on the front wouldn't be helpful when you are using the inner screen, and one on the back would be very awkward with the phone open, especially as the inner screen is probably used equally in both portrait and landscape. Certainly wouldn't expect one on the inner screen anyway, the technology is not up to that yet.
But compared to my Note 20 Ultra, the fingerprint reader on the Fold 2 is far more reliable and quicker in my experience.
As someone else said here, the trick is to register your thumb predominantly and scan the edges of your thumb. Note how you hold your phone and use the sensor naturally and use that part of your thumb or finger when registering your prints. And register more than one set using the same finger or thumb.
..
Flawless for me
It's a million times better than the S20 series!
Much better than the Flip.

Works perfectly for me. Better than my Note 10+ did. I like a physical button much better than in-screen. That being said, my N20U fingerprint scanner also works better than the N10+. I have small hands so that might also help. I don't think the placement would be that good for my Husband's large hands though...
Works fine for me!
its fine for me. i had to set it for a few fingers though based on the diff ways of holding it
OG Fold user here and it's absolutely awful and inconsistent for me. Easily the worst scanner I've ever used in a phone.
My problem is locating it on the side of the phone if there was some sort of indentation or something to better locate it, I think it would work better.
I find it pretty reliable to the point that I can unlock it without trying based on how I reach for my phone in my pocket. I also find it mostly well-placed when holding it with the main screen open and using it for apps or to unlock the phone.
