I actually like the fingerprint placement - Samsung Galaxy S8 Guides, News, & Discussion

I honestly like the fingerprint placement on the S8. It's only my second day having the phone and I find It very comfortable believe it or not. And having a case or Dbrand skin ,like MKBHD mentioned, makes it even easier to distinguish from the camera lens. As soon as I pull out the phone out of my pocket and it's unlocked. What does everyone else think? Again this is the regular S8, I can't speak for the plus model.

Been using FPS since Wednesday and I don't have an issue with it in terms of location and usability with either hand. It's all about repetition going from using a thumb print vs an index finger to unlock the device.
Sent from my SM-G955U using Tapatalk

It's not bad on the regular s8. I tried my friends s8+ and it's more challenging for me. You have to shift your hands in order to reach it -_-
I'm sure you could get used to it on that model, but yeah, with the regular size it's pretty good.

I have the S8+

Thanks i agree not sure why the media is being so absurdly picky about the FPS it's not that difficult to use.

Yep...i have the spigen tough armor case and have no issues with the placement of the fingerprint scanner. I also LOVE the fact that it can go from sleeping to unlocked with the scanner without having to press the power button

Yes! I love that feature been using it heavily

Coming from the Pixel XL it definitely isn't as easy. I feel like the size of the reader is too small. It doesn't work every time like the Pixel did. The area for the sensor was much larger and round. All in all i don't mind it though, and still better than being on the front. S8.

I'm using the Samsung Alcantara case with the S8+ and haven't had an issue at all. Easy to find, easy to reach, quick to unlock. I also use it with Samsung Pay and Last Pass pretty often and haven't yet found it challenging. I was concerned before I got it since just about every single review mentioned how awkward it was, but no issues here. I don't have large hands, but maybe I just hold the phone differently by habit.

I'm using the wee little baby S8, the fingerprint scanner is exactly where my pointer finger rests on the back of the phone. I use a case, so that really helps. I find it to be much more reliable than the one on the S7 edge, and I love that it turns on the screen.

It is much easier than I thought it was going to be after the reviews that I read (S8)
Whether the camera lens will get filthy pretty quickly we'll have to wait and see.

It's ok on the regular S8 but it feels less responsive and slower than the Note 7 scanner to me as I have to rehit it a few times. I am finding facial or iris recognition is so much better.
Some reviews are solely basing their opinion on this FS position and giving it a less than stellar overall rating.

I got the Galaxy S8 Plus, and my finger print button works flawlessly. I really love the placement of the button, but I'm a left hand user. I'm a happy camper.

I wouldn't say i like the placement but its no longer such a deal breaker. before actually having the phone all the negative reviews dont mean anything to me now. Once i put a case on i never misplaced my finger and it works flawless.

Without a case, I still find it comfortable for my right hand pointer finger. I've gotten used to it, after a day using it. I'm on the + and it's not bad at all.

I don't like the FPS and it's position.
Under the camera would be much better and the sensor is to strict. It unlocks only if the whole finger is on the sensor but with my honor only a part of my part is enough to unlock. It's still secure but much faster. Swiping down the status bar with FPS works much better with my honor 8 too.

I'm left handed, so it's a bit more uncomfortable. However, it's much less of an inconvenience than I thought it would be and I use it often along with the Iris scanner which works incredible well. I thought I wouldn't use it at all, but it's definitely functional and usable, just not ideal. I'm using the S8.

It's all about how you grip the phone and how your hand size is.
I can comfortably hit the sensor with both left and right hands on the S8+, yes the large variant.
No other member in my family likes the position. So I'm in a minority here.
A better "universally" comfortable position would have been better.

Verizon S5 Thoughts/Feedback Thread

After having mine now for an hour and using it....the fingerprint scanner doesn't work as good as I would like it. My thumb is at an angle when holding the phone. I added it in using that angle, but it wants you to come straight down, which means I have to change the way i hold it to use it and have it register.
Verizon added so much bloat it's crazy!
the heart rate monitor. absolutely useless to over 90% of the consumers.... maybe even 95%
Seems they screwed up adding all the extra features that as mentioned here, a lot probably will not use. Finger print scanners are prone to screw up and the heart rate sensor seems frilly for most. The cost of this "customer will like it" fluff is a bigger device. The device IMO is now too big in relation to the display and awkward with one hand for most people. The S4 was near borderline already.
Samsung truly has a bloat and new feature fetish. They seem to think the combination appeals more to customers. For the majority it seems No, but the minority is perhaps Yes. Catch is everyone gets stuck with a bigger, bloat ridden device- like it or not if want the S5.
The funny thing is the S5 now has near the same overall size of my S4 with a bigger battery.
M8 is also too big IMO, so the S5 is not alone in this regard.
I actually found the chrome trim be terrible looking, and despite my plans not to use a case, had to get a thin black bumper to cover it. There is no doubt the M8 looks better, and is very comfortable to hold. I had to have the S5 because the screen just seemed much better, and part of it isn't wasted by the nav bar like on the M8.
I haven't had enough time to play with all of the features yet, however the screen has been nothing but impressive so far. I don't like the new settings so far, but that's probably because I'm just not used to it.

My biggest beef with the M8 was that the speakers make the phone so much bigger than it needs to be. If you hold the S5 and the M8 next to eachother there is about half an inch of wasted space, especially if you factor in the navbar. For people that use the speakers, it might be worth it, but I would not.

How is the screen in direct sunlight? I saw a review comparing it with others at max brightness which showed not much improvement. I think only Auto-Brightness will really max out the screen's brightness and I'm not sure if they manually maxed it out or it was it on auto.
And are you using it on the default mode or did you change it to cinematic?
i love the fingerprint scanner..works perfectly for my thumb for 1 handed use..
only thing i'm not liking right now is it seems to have that same body shift issue my white S3 had, that my S4 didn't..like as if the battery isn't big enough for the cavity, so it moves and makes the body feel like its twisting so it makes some lil snappy creak noises. kinda sucks, but oh well. maybe the battery just isn't big enough for the spot,w ho knows.

Granted I only spent about 5 minutes with it outside so far, but the difference was HUGE from my S3 (which I really struggled with in the sun). I did not mess with any display settings yet, so it was all default. I got it on lunch and I'm working, so I've only been able to play with it here and there.
The display continues to be impressive, which is the main reason I wanted it. I can't speak to the difference between the s4-5, but between the 3 and 5 its night and day.
I'm excited to get it home and drop in a sink of water.
I like the phone. Definitely has a lot of features that I won't use but that's a Galaxy device. If we're on XDA, we know what we're getting into. The bigger size to achieve the IP67 certification is somewhat annoying but again, nothing unexpected and a nice feature. One that I'm sure will save more than a few people. So, despite the usually Galaxy "extras", I'm enjoying it. I will have to get a replacement as there is a permanent " smudge " on the display. Almost as if there's a coating for the IP67 certification and that coating wasn't applied correctly. No biggie. As long as VZW cooperates lol.

Let's see these pics. No way worse than G2.
Not liking the recent apps button. Came from an s3 and I'm used to tapping for the menu to come up. Now it's needs a long press. If I could just swap the long and short press functions I would pretty happy. Only had it since 10am.
Screen is definitely better than the s3. Using it to navigate on the dash on a bright sunny made it very apparent. S3 looked dark and hard to see, the s5 looked way better and easy to see.
The chrome around this all black is not to my taste, but I'm hoping my new uag case will cover it.

I have the exact same Note III running Tweaked and the same theme.
The battery on the OnePlus One crushes my Note III, as for the camera...well it's about a tie. I do miss eraser mode from my Note III bit not enough to start using it again.
I've had my OnePlus One for about two months now and my poor Note III just sits on my desk. I just updated it to the latest Tweaked the other day but it still just sits there.

I jumped from a note 3 just last week and got the phone last night. So far I'm loving it way more than my note. Granted, I was on the att note 3 so I didn't have an unlocked bootloader. But build wise I think this phone feels better in my hand than the note did.

I read the OP, I still fall to see the point. As you can see you get one guy saying 'X' is better and another guy saying 'Y' is better. In the end you get no useful information and you need to make the decision for yourself.

I can see the point, it's kind of like bouncing an idea off of someone.
Sure he was probably already leaning one way or another but the majority of people seem to agree and resonate with his opinion, so that's the choice he's choosing. Had they not agreed, maybe he wouldn't have or maybe he would, either way he'd probably feel better that 'some' people see it the same as him.
That's my thoughts anyway, I like reading these, as long as they aren't huge lol. I think they serve a good enough purpose for the people creating them.
But that's just my opinion

I have both an international note 3 and a Oneplus one.
The Oneplus camera is better in low light.
Oneplus battery subjectively seems slightly better due to less bloatware apps running in the background.
The Oneplus firmware is also much smoother again due to lack of bloat.
Only real advantage of note 3 is the pen itself so if you don't need that I'd go for it.

I also have Note 3 T mobile running Tweaked. Love it. I did have a Oneplus One as well. I also liked that one. I had to send it back however as my volume keys did not work. Actually right now, I am trying to decide if I want to try with another one or not. I really liked the phone. My main concern, and it is a big one, is that I might get another bum device from OnePlus. It took one month, literally, to get approval to send my last device back for refund. If I get another bad one, I don't know if I wanna deal with that, again. I am still waiting on the refund too by the way, but should have that this week.
The phones are both great, but I think you gotta consider the customer support too here. Supposedly OP is working on that aspect though, but I haven't seen it yet.

IMO after messing around alot with my freind's note 3 and owning a opo, if i had to compare i would say they are about equal, both have their advantages.
I still have my Note 3 with me as a development phone. As I still have KNOX 0x0 and am not binded to any bootloader lock, I just flash everything on my Note 3/install everything on my Note 3 first before my OPO.
In my opinion, the camera is WAY better on the OPO. The focus and the clarity of the lens is far superior than the dumbed down, slow focusing, Note 3 camera. Try this with your Note 3: Put your finger 10cm away from the camera and try focusing on just the finger with a bunch of paper in the background. This takes around 5-7 tap to focuses compared to OPO's 1-2 taps. I am using the same camera apk file to compare - Google Camera, however no difference when using TW camera and/or CM Camera.
The screen is the only thing you would miss your Note 3 for. The screen on the OPO looks a bit washed out compared to the dense blacks and the vibrant colors. OPO still has great viewing angles, but you're comparing a JDI with an AMOLED - two different technologies.
The OPO has eMMC v5.0 which means faster data speeds compared to the Note 3.
Sound, not really much of a difference. The fact that there's two speakers on the OPO vs. the only one speaker on the Note 3 shouldn't be a deciding factor as the speaker on the OPO isn't running on real stereo but dual mono.
Front facing camera bump up to 5MP is better for those selfie-lovers. Not my thing but if it's yours, then go ahead.
When holding the device, I feel like holding the Note 3 with a full aluminium bumper and an aluminium battery cover actually FEELS NICER than the OPO, as the OPO's thin profile more heightened design feels more delicate to the touch. The OPO definitely feels more premium than the Note 3, as the Note 3 feels like you can break/cause damage to any bit of the phone (screen movement in/out, home button alignment issue/unresponsive click, S Pen slot crack, etc) but with the OPO you have a more sleek profile with a more premium feel.

Note Edge or Note 4? Looking for input

Hi guys, I'm looking for input on my next phone. I've read through the edge vs note 4 threads but most are almost a year old so I'm looking for some updated info.
I currently have an S4 and have narrowed down my future options to the Edge and Note 4. I like the idea of having the edge screen but wondering if it's actually useful. Some comments in the old threads mentioned the lack of development for the Edge. Is that still true? I don't do anything crazy with my S4...It's rooted and I really like xposed and wanam. I haven't done ROMs or anything like that.
I guess my main question boils down to...can I root an Edge and have xposed? Is there anything else I should know about or take into account when evaluating the two phone options?
Thanks!
Note Edge is unique, one of a kind phone. It is the first and also the last of its own product line. Edge screen is very useful. The edge on s6 edge and s6 edge+ are gimmick. Retarded Media killed Note Edge. I'm so mad about that.
Development for Note Edge is basically dead. But i have no issue using my Note Edge without root or any modification.

But root works perfect on this device, so does exposed. If you're looking for roms the note 4 is better. But if you can live with stock TW I would choose Edge.

Sounds like the Edge can do everything I would need it to. Thanks for the help, guys!
If anyone else has input, I'd love to hear it.
Almost forgot, I must emphasize that I'm talking about root on F/FY device. Other versions I don't know really. Maybe someone else does?

I have Sprint, which might be the P model.
Some things I've read say that the fingerprint scanner isn't very good/accurate on either the Edge or Note 4. What has your experience been? I don't know much about that feature but one proposed solution I read said to fill multiple fingerprint slots (there are 5?) with the same finger and that greatly improves the accuracy.

I swear a lot of people these days are retarded. I love my Note Edge and I am super pissed the Media killed it. Anyways the finger print scanner works wonders for me. I actually prefer the slide method instead of pressing and holding. It just feels faster.
I saved my right and left middle finger, and my right and left thumbs and it works perfectly. You just need a slow but steady swipe. Its perfect. Seriously i am bamboozled by how much this phone din't take off but I am happy I own one.
Even when I am walking around campus and girls see it, they are all impressed by what the Edge Screen can do. If you a power user, the Note Edge is the last true great phone made for us. I am using the T Mobile version on MetroPCS

Does 5.1.1 bring back the camera button on the Edge Screen or is it still on the main window as it was on 5.0.1. Also are notifications back to only being on the Edge Screen or are the still popping up?
After getting feedback from you guys as well as Note 4 owners, I decided to buy the Edge. It should be here tomorrow - I feel like a kid waiting for Christmas. Is it tomorrow yet?!
After doing more reading, I will likely get: a spare TrendOn battery with charger, maybe a screen protector (possibly KlearKare), and a case or bumper. Case selection seems pretty limited. I use a Caseology (TPU?) on my S4 and like that it's not bulky, has moderate texture, and wasn't expensive. Are theresimilar options for the Edge? Depending on what's available, I've also thought about getting a case like that and then cutting out most of the back, leaving the leather back exposed while protecting the edges.
Not sure about cases. I only use my OEM Flip Cover. Its perfect. Also the phone with the cover makes it easy to kung fu grip the phone really strongly. Have yet to drop the phone

Depending on what's available, I've also thought about getting a case like that and then cutting out most of the back, leaving the leather back exposed while protecting the edges.

Yes SM-N915F or SM-N915FY
While I do love my edge, do be aware that compare to note 4 owners, you will be treated with unbound discrimination . Unfairly, cool case companies refused to make cases for this phone. Nobody wants to work on root for it. Gear vr doesn't fit. Glass screen protectors failed to be produced. Extended battery cases choices are very slim. You will be worst that a second class citizen. At least that's how I feel since I got this phone. Anyway, rant over.

same here. i actually have the Note 4 and the Note Edge. i loved my Note 4 with a passion but i appreciated the edge display and capabilities. it was gimmicky but it did have a use-- notifications without unlocking the phone, the marquee feel to it, and shortcuts to some other key functions of the phone right there without having to swipe and search my app drawer. the only drawback that I'm experiencing is that the battery life seemed to be killed with the 5.0.1 update, (not to mention i have the Verizon variant, so it took FOREVER just to even get THAT much.) i'm considering going back to my Note 4 just for this reason, but i'm searching the forums to see if there's any kind of resolution or suggestions for it. without root and any other major development for the phone, i'm kind of stuck. but i hope that you enjoy yours.
I found a solution to the battery problem.I downgraded back to KitKat from 5.0.1, thats after doing everything I can to solve the battery issues with Lollipop even with a fresh install of stock. I think il be staying for awhile with this. By the way i have SM-N915G

Yeah Kit Kat will always be the only home for the Note Edge proper. Short of finding custom ROMS. Its depressing how the only phone to actually try something different and Do it pretty damn well will never ever get a sequel. This phone wows everyone I show to it. The positive response I've gotten from Apple users that wanted to buy it alone tells me that the public just was never given a chance to try it.
Also I wish there was a harder version of the Flip Case. I dropped my phone on concrete and it got a scratch and now that crack keeps spreading lol. Its still barely noticeable with normal use. But its noticeable when the screen is off. Pissed of at lack of support will never ever let this phone go until something more revolutionary comes out. Its just that damn good. Power use the edge screen like no other
True, i was about to trade my edge for Note 4. For battery, accessories, & more choices of custom ROMs but after being satisfied with KiTKat i think il hold on to this. I actually wanted to try Nexus 6P.I'll see in the future.Note 5 without sd card slot really turned me off its so difficult to say goodbye to the note series.

For me I can't. I have bad ADD so I need to have a phone that will allow me to jot down things on the fly. The Edge was the perferct answer. Cannot ever see myself use another phone without a stylus.
I just really really really really hope another manufacturer or Samsung themselves go back to being more revolutionary and market well to make another Edge phone with actually functionality. If they don't, I'l;l buy two more Note Edge when they get cheaper so I can have backups. Thats how much I love this phone. I use my phone like a computer, especially because I am in school
Actually, today, I got a date just by showing this girl I met at a school diner my phone. I used the phone as a social thing too. Samsung needs to start marketing their stuff better

The chin...

Does anyone LIKE the size of the chin? I found myself instantly pleased with the added area to handle my phone. I actually left the sim in my 5x for a while to be sure. But I've never noticed how much I use the top and bottom bezels in portrait view. Especially when. Showing someone pictures or portrait videos. I dunno... I'm loving it. Perfect size where my thumbs never bumps the touchscreen.
Am I the only one?
I have no problem with it either. Take a look at the iPhone 6, which I have, and the bezel is about the same size as the Pixel. Actually the whole phone looks similar with a very similar feel. The Pixel is a little larger screen dimension wise but both are beautiful devices. And let's be honest here, if you can compare to an iPhone you're saying something. This device is a jewel if the battery can hold up.
I just got my Pixel today, and I wish the chin was a bit smaller to be honest. The onscreen buttons take up a good chunk of space that I feel makes it look a bit...iPodish? That's for sure not an accurate assessment, but it is what I think when I look at the chin of the phone especially. Like I said, first day and all. I love everything else about this phone though. I even think the price is justifiable.
I actually like the chin too. I find it helps my thumb reach the home button much more comfortably when using it one handed, rather than over extending my thumb to reach the bottom of my phone.
Plus it gives the phone a very minimal/elegant look. So no complaints from me!
No complaints here! Keeps the phone looking balanced

Yes same here... While at first I thought it was huge and unsightly, when I think about it, I wouldn't want my thumb to have to reach any further down to get to the nav bar. It keeps the nav bar at a perfect height. Still seems kind of boring though. But I'm also glad they didn't put any branding there so kind of a conundrum for me.
Sent from my Pixel using Tapatalk
I dont mind the bottom too. It's not super noticeable and I agree that it makes the nav bar easier to reach.
I just wish people would stop calling it a "chin" - it's a bezel, not a chin. Look at the original G1 for a "chin".

Totally... A lot of people seem to want this phone to be the opposite of iPhone. But we already had that... The Nexus lineup. Sure some were better than others but they were never trying to compete with anyone directly. Just good enough with a great price.

Just got mine last night. And I honestly looked at it and said 'why is everyone complaining about the chin?' to my girlfriend.
I agree, I am totally satisfied with the price now that the phone is in hand. Speed/Feel is amazing.

I never noticed that the home button was more comfortable on the Pixel until I used my 5X and Pixel side by side.. thanks for pointing that out! Of course I can't say much about the XL cause I didn't get that one.

HAH. I've been Androiding since the G1... and yea, that thing had a Joe Swanson Chin for real.
I just joined the chin lingo cause everyone else seemed to be doing it... Peer pressure!
this is #13 of a long list of reasons i'm returning the Pixel. this phone makes so little sense to me i cannot even wrap my head around it, probably because i don't talk TO my damn phone. leave the AI for the kiddos. going back to my ****ing galaxy S3. maybe HTC 10 after that. dunno.
Now that I have my phone, in person, I don't mind it. I prefer balance/symmetry and the chin provides that. I would prefer a speaker there instead, but oh well …
The chin I actually don't notice. Maybe it's because I have the 5' black version. To me, the chin makes it better for one handed use. The galaxy s7 was hard for one handed use for me anyway. I think the chin thing is really blown out of proportion. Just my two cents.
In theory I'd like to see a smaller chin/ bezel and increase the screen size while keeping the overall size the same.
In practice, I don't mind the chin. I don't notice it at all.
I hear y'all but that Jay Leno chin and fivhead are fails to me. I do appreciate all the reasons why you like them but the could have put like 8 speakers in that space. Subs, tweeters and all that! Still love the phone though.

Looks weird I'd rather have it to help with holding the phone and keeping the navbar at a decent height

The bottom bezel adds balance, symmetry and consistency to the device.
I am still upset it gave up the speaker grill. But sure look uber minimalistic.

Totally agree with both of you. I think it really adds the balance. When I saw it at first I wondered, but once I used it I don't mind a bit. I use headphones so I dont care about huge speakers.
Coming from the BB Z30 I am use to the chin and prefer it becuase of the way I hold the phone and navigate with my thumb. Now if only google would pick up a bb 10 device and take down some notes. Like moving things down low so I dont have to stretch my hand to the top.

Same here, I only use my phones one-handed, whether it's the Pixel, Notes, iPhone 7+, etc. The extra space is where my palm digs into. The BlackBerry Classic is the only device I have to use two hands, but da*n, that physical keyboard is sooo worth it.

Screen sensitivity

Hey guys, my son plays a Batman Lego Movie game and it's similar to Subway Surfer. He was telling me last night the screen is not very sensitive compared to his S8. Has anyone encountered anything the same? I don't play too many games but I wonder if this is something on all of the PH1s or just mine.
Sent from my PH-1 using Tapatalk
I noticed the same thing but I'm not a gamer. I have to touch some things twice to get it to do what it's supposed tozoo
I am noticing the same thing! I haven't noticed it in games since I don't game but I do have to tap things twice sometimes. I thought it was just me! Haha

Same here. Also seems to have micro stutters when scrolling. Not smooth scrolling at all.
Sent from my SM-G955U1 using Tapatalk
Scrolling isn't too bad. Overall I really like the device. Build quality is exceptional. Haven't had it long enough to comment on battery or camera. Might actually keep it over the note.
Sent from my PH-1 using Tapatalk
oh... I'm not liking this. I'm not a gamer, but I like my phones to be responsive. I swear my Nexus 6P sometimes picks up the heat of my finger before I actually touch. That is sensitive!
Reporting same issue of having to tap things twice to register.
Agree similar issues here but some fanboy is going to come and say we all are just making this up to make look essential bad. When so many people are complaining that basic stuff isn't working properly you know this company wasn't ready software wise for the launch. Looks like they wanted to rush it out before the fall launch of major phones.
Considering that is an adjustable setting in some way (Since some other devices have a "Glove mode" and whatnot) I wonder if this can be adjusted in software easy enough in an update or given to us as an option. (Or heck, get root, make changes. )
Also, remember the phone does have a lot of rejection detection built in mainly because you will be touching the edges much easier on the device than you would most others. This for sure can cause sensitivity problems but just to check, how does the phone do one handed without anything near the edge of the screen?
It's just a thought but I notice this with other devices (my U11 even has this issue and I do dislike it vs my 6P and G3 even).

I like the "I'm not a gamer" comment..... With a Descent Underground Sig. lol
Lier!
(also I feel that game is less Descent feeling than Overload. Overload feels perfect while Descent Underground just feels and looks, off.)

Lol, well ok, not a phone gamer! Ugh. No.
Good point in the edge thing, that is where I notice it most like top corner 3 dot.
Thanks for pointing that out.
I like the phone so I'll live with it till I can't ?

Could they really adjust sensitivity with a software update?

I am finding screen sensitivity issues as well. I don't see any scrolling issues though. Just seems like I have to touch things a couple times. Especially the keyboard when typing
I'm fortunate in that I'm not having any sensitivity issues, or scrolling issues.
Some apps do seem to have issues with the what would seem to be a screen resolution issue (textra for example) where the inputs are off by a few pixels. Maybe this is what y'all are experiencing?
This is my second day with the phone, it's definitely smoother than day one. I'm guessing the OS was optimizing.

Same here no issues with that.
I need TWRP to restore all my data.
I need TWRP and root to get rid of all the stinking ads everywhere.
I notice it as well while playing clash royale, really annoying.

It's definitely this, I can't reorder stats in the fitbit app. I tried plugging in a USB mouse and it still didn't work so it's not the touch.
I haven't noticed any issues with having to tap the screen twice, however I have noticed while typing the haptic feedback sometimes seems like it misses a letter or two. The action registers and the letter appears but i get no vibration for some reason. It's been pretty sporadic. Maybe an AOSP but since we're so close to stock?
Sent from my PH-1 using Tapatalk
I seem to be having the same issues... starting to get very frustrating.
I'm not having any sensitivity issues. Are you seeing them after installing any apps?
