Hello XDA,
I recently upgraded to a P40 Pro and have been finding my bearings with the new HMS
My main question is, have I lost all of my Google backups from my old device and how can I back up data onto my new P40 Pro to ensure that it is all safe?
Secondly, what alternatives are people using to the GMAIL and YouTube App as I have been forcing myself to get used to the Web Apps but it's just not for me!
Thanks.
Hey bud, I recently swapped to a P40 Pro and I was recommended Google Takeout to recover any Google stuff you may have around and then you can always move it to Huawei Cloud or One Drive etc. As for YouTube I actually asked that on here recently and was recommened YouTube Vanced. I still use the website just pinned to my homescreen for now.

In terms of getting all your Google data across to your P40 Pro/HMS device I recommend using Google Takeout.
To back stuff up on your P40 Pro then I recommend getting your Huawei Drive set up. You can even backup WhatsApp.
I've actually signed into my Gmail account using Huawei's Email app. As for YouTube I use YouTube Vanced.

For YouTube Vanced if you install Vanced MicroG then it will allow you to safely sign in using your Gmail account.

Hi there,
The installation of gms right now is unstable or tricky. For example using Chatpartner+Ice Box+Island is the most stable as it gets, but it has its own drawbacks(you can see info about the methods in the other threads). I don't know if we will get a clean permanent solution. I hope we get.
So let's assume you don't get gms, because you don't want to mess with the current unstable solutions. The drawbacks from my point of view are:
- no PlayStore -> So you don't get your paid apps. Also you can't get all apps from the Huawei store, because some of them are missing. Some partial solution: Use ApkPure or some other app store to get your apps.
- no Youtube -> Youtube requires gms. Solution: use Youtube Vanced;
- no Google Maps -> It requires gms. Solution: use Waze;
- no Google Drive/Photos -> It requires gms. Solution: use Microsoft OneDrive or any other cloud;
- no Contact Sync -> It requires gms. Solution: export contacts from Google and import them.(here I decided again to go with Microsoft so I sync my future new contacts in a cloud after all)
- no Gmail -> It requires gms. Solution: use Outlook app or any other email app like Nine. You can add you gmail account there.
Some people suggested to use the google apps through a browser and put shortcuts on your home screen, but this is not a replacement for the actual apps in my oppinion.
Bottom line:
- If you don't want any hassle and you want everything everywhere working then get P30 Pro;
- If you want to try the available workarounds for google apps and you won't get overwhelmed or irritated when some errors occur and you have to tinker again then get the Mate 30 Pro;
- If you want to detach from google ecosystem and try some new apps then get the Mate 30 Pro(just make sure you thought of all apps that you need and found a comfortable replacement);
- For the P40 Pro I can't speak;
I have one of the workarounds of GMS on my phone and the apps are working. However I am trying to move away a bit from gms, because I want to be free to try new tech and use all my apps. I am a heavy Google user paying for subscriptions for some services so I am dependent on their apps. However with this phone I realized that Google is closing their services forcing users to have certain hardware which I dislike. This is why I will make an attempt to use alternatives(mostly I will use Microsoft products) so I can buy whatever phone I like and use it seamlessly.
I hope this helps!

Chatpartner+Ice Box+Island , but I see someone just created a thread saying that ChatPartner doesn't work now(I don't know if it is true). However Chatpartner is just the first part for getting the gms on the device which can be achieved also with other methods like restoring a backup which has this chinese app for installing gms(you can search, videos are everywhere showing it). Then afterwards probably you will start getting the non-stop notifications that your device is not certified. From that point you will need to follow the guides to add your account and then use Ice Box to freeze some google apps(playstore and services). This way you won't get the notifications, but any installed google apps will work. From there you can use Island to activate your work profile and unfreeze those apps in an isolated scope where you can have your Play Store to get apps or you can just use some other app store. You can get more details in the other threads, basically this is the main topic in the whole Mate 30 Pro forum.

the installation of gms is tricky complicated for most users, but it can be done if you want to learn. it works for now but no one knows till when.
the P40 definitely wont have GMS too, so if this is a problem, go with another brand or P30 or mate 20 if you still want huawei.
Hi folks,
I am very interested in the P40 Pro, but as many others I am concerned on what will be missing when I would try to get along without GMS.
A few things have not been covered in the many documents and videos I checked, so maybe users already well versed in the Huawei Non-GMS way can help here
- I am using a 3rd party calendar (Calengoo), would this be able to sync to Google calendar without GMS? I specifically use Google calender in sync with my family, would that be possible without GMS?
- I assume all purchases (in-app or Pro versions) are directly linked to Google Playstore, so no way around without it - or is there a way (e.g. with Yalp)?
- access to Google Drive and specifically WhatsApp backups - any luck without GMS?
- syncing of Google Contacts (continously, not just one-time) without GMS - possible?
Please accept my apologies if all this has been answered elsewhere - in that case a short pointer would be much appreciated!
Thanks for your help,
Axel
not sure if you missed my post but everything you need for alternatives is here
https://forum.xda-developers.com/huawei-p40-pro/how-to/google-alternatives-live-gms-t4081351
now you can make your life easier and just install gms on your phone so you can slowly transition from being without gms so your phone function like what you expect it to be.
Dear xnostra,
Thanks for your reply and the link to your excellent guide which I (of course) have seen and read and it indeed was one of the things that helped me much in understanding have to manoeuvre around lack of GMS.
My questions in the first post are not so much around software functionalities which can be replaced,as your guide indicates!
I was wondering whether some of the syncing (Calendar and contacts specifically) can also be done without GMS, using other apps for contacts and calendar to access my Google account.
Thanks,
Axel

hi sorry to make the answer short all the things you mention will not work without gms unfortunately. thats why as you see in my previous answer i mentioned ``to make your life easier just install gms`` before you install those apps youll need to install gms otherwise they will not work as expected.
I really really want a P40 Pro and could quite happily replace most of the things I use Google for (I was iCloud anyway for a long time) The 2 biggies though that I believe cannot be properly worked around are Google photos and Google pay.
It is really frustrating as I am very disappointed with my (Exynos) S20+ and the Pixel still falls short, the P40 is overwise terrific. I am actualluy thinking of picking up another P30 pro instead but then as I uderstand there are no guarantees that google support will remain on that either?

p30 pro is not affected by the ban it will function as how its intended to from android updates google playstore and everything.
check my guide on finding alternative solution for your google apps its in the p40 guide section.
i had s20 ultra before i sold it after 5 days it was exynos and i feel scammed on it it functioned very bad compared to a snapdragon.

I have P40 Pro for some time now and will share what I know to Your questions
-Phone Clone - moves nearly everything from my P30 pro to P40 including calendar data, call logs, contacts, sms etc. so the calendar is fine - but local!
-Purchased apps - I have several - they work (one is asking for some verification but nonintrusive ) of course No updates
-I did not try
-sure NOT
I was perfectly happy wit P30 Pro but both P40 Pro not only for camera But to try a world without GMS - It exists and works - but it's not the same - I missed Google Duo (I can install it from Amazon but can't connect), in a long term I expect some inconveniences - as I have some subscription apps and they'll expire eventually...
I think the prospect of android without the google services does actually have some appeal but I fear in real life losing things like photos, Netflix and Google pay would be frustrating.

Hi guys,
just received my p40 pro this week and was confused if i would be able to access my photos as they were all backed up to google photos on my p20 pro, searched on app gallery and found "Google Photos Website" link. It takes you direct to the website, i signed in then just added a shortcut to the home page so seems to work perfectly. It seems you can upload back to it as well but i thought i would be as well starting to move everything onto the Huawei cloud for ease going forward? Let me know what you think is best if you have done this yourselves guys.
thanks

Another question but related to google, how have you found Huawei's alternative services like the Cloud, Music ID account? Also are you still using Google maps or have you tried anything like Here We Go?
Thanks
I think people are syncing via dropbox.
i am using amazon photos.
if you dont like the website of google photos, then I guess you are stuck with HMS+GMS

Hi Chris, yeah ive been using here we go, its brilliant tbh, to me it seems more modern and up to date vs google maps. Ive also now started using the huawei cloud as atm they are doing a massive discount for the year so i cant complain.
Hello everyone,
So i have been posting about banking apps how to get them and other apps. I have noticed a lot of people side loading GMS or trying to and was wondering why?
I don't have GMS on my device, I'm happily using HMS as the two are not built to run together. I have all my banking apps, social media, games ect on HMS via Phone clone, App Gallery and Petal search. I still use my Gmail via the Huawei email apps no problems.
Would love everyone's feedback as to why the need for GMS?
I have been temped to load it on myself. The issue for me would be my ease of use with all the apps under one store and not having to rely on your banking to come across from previous phone. Also with the GMS again it is the ease of use knowing I can log on my laptop after and it is synced over, Youtube is a big thing for many people aswell. I used Vanced, which is good but i can't log in and subscribe to channels i am a fan of also it doesn't hold the place in the video you are watching if you need to close the app for various reasons.
I have also considered a side load but tbh there's nothing on gms I that I don't already have on my p3
40 Pro.
When I cross refrenced the Google Services I actually only ever used Photos, Maps and YouTube
For me having these replacements from the get go on my Huawei P40 Pro was a easy transition - Huawei Cloud, Here We Go and YVLR
HMS is bigger and better than I thought, Android OS has helped massively.

So Barclays is a go to for me and to have it on my P40 Pro would be amazing I am currently using the weblink saved to device but find myself using Barclays official app on my Huawei M5, I hope Barclays can devolp an app for HMS this side of the year.
GMS is no big requirement for myself I looked at the GMS folder and only every use Photos, Maps and YT all of these have a workaround on HMS, goodbye GMS hello HMS.

Hi, so i would say best approach for a lot of this is,
1 Download petal search, this gives you access to many app stores via one application. Making life easy.
2 Use Huawei ID which you can set up in settings, this allows you to do the same thing you can access your device from a laptop and pull over all the info from your phone which is cool.
3 The banking app i wouldn't say is a massive thing in regards to using Phone Clone, most people will use this app when setting up there new phone to pull your data over. So its not adding any more steps in for set up.
4 I personally just use the browser for YouTube and save it as a shortcut to my home screen. You can log in and when you switch window it saves your place on the video, so if you need to send a text ect this is perfect.
I hope this helps

This big thing i think people are missing is, people swap from IOS to Android every day. They swap from one system to another one, now there's a third option. And if you have seen IOS 14 they are looking to adopt 3rd party apps which is what HMS already offers.

I have GMS installed for a couple of minor local apps but the majority works fine with HMS give it a bit and i will remove GMS.
My only gripe for now would be Android Auto which i use daily.

When i have used auto in the passed i have found it very inconsistent. Found waze is the best for maps.
Ive tried a sideloaded mate30 pro and initially I thought it was a wow moment, but after a couple of weeks I realised I wasn't getting the best out of my device especially as it hugely affected the battery performance, and since giving that to my wife and sharking her upgrade to the p40 pro I can say I prefer the HMS device. Shes reset the phone and stripped out GMS or shall i say I did lol and other than the Barclays app we are sorted. I mean utilising phone clone/app gallery/ petal search im completely set up. I was ever so worried about the function of not being able to cast to my chromecast however on my smart tv downstairs I can screen share using the wireless projection function. SO life continues and my device is awesome

Well it depends i dont have issues now with my P40 P but i did with my S20U. Also firmware of the car and a good cable is important. For now it is stable.
TBH it might have just been the car that was the issue. Always use the cable that is provided with the device.

What car do you drive? I have an Audi atm and have just had zero luck getting it to work either on older GMS devices. I'll continue to angle my phone in the cup holder.... I heard rumours of something called HiCar coming later down the line? :cyclops:
So I've had my Huawei P40 Pro for a couple weeks now. The lovely people in my local phone shop helped me to set my phone up by phone cloning my apps and data from my Huawei P30 Pro.
Apart from Phone Cloning what other ways of getting apps are there? And what are some of your favourite apps on your P40 devices?
Best way is to check app gallery first but while on there download petal search which will be your main source for finding the remaining apps that you need
Aurora store is also good as it downloads apps straight from Google Play. APK Pure is another alternative.
