Bluetooth issues - Google Pixel 4a Questions & Answers

I am having tons of difficulty connecting my 4a to 2 different ford sync systems. It will connect and disconnect frequently. Audio is like a scratched cd from the mid 90's. I am not having difficulty using my pixel buds at all. Anyone else with issues? Also, Google maps last night just spun me in circles. Hoping I don't need an RMA and that it is a known issue that Google will push a fix for. Thanks.

I was connected for several hours to a Ford Sync system over multiple days. Phone calls and music were fine. No connection issues (yet).

I have no issues at all but then again I'm on Android 11

Factory reset and reinstalled apps as opposed to transferring data from my old phone seems to have fixed my issues.

Had the same issue = put it in safe mode and it worked fine. They suggested I uninstall my apps one by one until i find the issue. 100 apps....**** them.

So, try a factory reset and restore data from your Google account. That worked well for me.

Mine kept dropping connection to a Sony HU. Works fine over USB.

I started having issues only with Youtube Music and Google Play music but not with Youtube or Google Podcasts in my car. Running android 11 beta so I submitted a issue tracker report for it.
Update: issue was temporarily resolved by turning off the car crash detection in the Personal Safety app.

My issue is a little different, any time I use an aux cord and the phone locks, the audio stops until I unlock it again. Bluetooth works fine for me though.
I should also mention I'm on the A11 Beta

I reset it - reinstalled apps music worked but now calls cut out - I can take a call for 30 seconds then it switches off the car to the phone for no reason them back to the car like 30 seconds later - Tired of it - returning phone. Piece of ****.

So far, no issues on my 4a with my Plantronics Voyager 5200 (countless hours used) and my 2016 Subaru Outback (limited use; but took about a half a dozen calls with no issues at all). Both syncing & operation seemed seamless & a bit faster than my Pixel XL. :good:

lol - auto BT couldn't possibly be a factor here, nah. Blame the Pixel...exclusively.
Honda and Subaru in our stable, both 2019s. Both have a tendency to 'take over' BT and kick off other devices. A couple times I have pulled into garage and immediately connect to spouses conversation, sometimes disconnecting her in the process. Very unprofessional when on a business call. Both vehicles do it regardless of handset. Android and iOS gizmos. Ridiculous, presumptive behaviors on the part of auto head unit.

I have a s20 5g works perfectly previous phone was a moto z3 worked perfectly - and I am not the only one reporting bluetooth issues. I am a phone junkie i have three phones right now oneplus 6t. iphone 8 and s20 5g as my daily driver - never had an issue on the same car. Ever.

Yep - don't see a ground swell of BT complaints beyond the usual grumbles for a new device. Got a 15 day return window; seems like the best option for you.

I couldn't connect to my JVC, seemed to have some conflict with my previous 5T. Something about wrong code or password. I cleared bluetooth memory on the JVC and then connected to 4a fine.

Spotify and bluetooth sound freeze on Android 11.
Is there some workaround ?

Weak Bluetooth?

Anybody else experiencing a weak bluetooth connection with the S6? I'm losing the connection with my Garmin Vivosmart in places I've had no problem connecting with other devices. I'm curious about other's experiences on this as a search hasn't turned up much yet.
I have noticed this as well. I could walk pretty far away from my S4 before it would drop. With this S6, I only get a few feet away before audio gives out. Doesn't disconnect, just loses audio.
Also, random loss of audio from time to time, even when the phone is right next to my head.
Yeah I've noticed the same thing with my S6. At work I don't always keep my phone on me and with my M8 I could walk around the whole building without my G Watch disconnecting and with my S6 I can only get a few feet away before the connection drops.
Yes happening with my moto 360 it is annoying and hopefully will be fixed soon
Haven't had any disconnect issues, but for some reason connecting to my car stereo has been a nightmare. It takes like 5 tries before it actually connects.

I'm having issues with my car bluetooth too. It works fine initially, but every couple of days I have to delete my phone and re-pair it for it to connect again.

Same here, takes me 3 or 4 times to try to bluetooth sync with ford sync system. Yesterday it would sync then play for 30 seconds and pause play back. I don't know if its the phone or lollipop as alot of the problems I see are also happening on my nexus 9.

I had Bluetooth issues on an old phone, and when I flashed different roms the issues were fixed. This leads me to believe that it's software related

Identical experience. With my S4 and my Nexus 9 I was able to literally get to the edge of my large yard before losing connection with my Vivosmart. Now I can't leave the room since getting my S6. I hope it's software and we can somehow change it, because it's ridiculously bad. I also have had to turn my BT off and back on three times this week because it would crash and refuse to talk to either my Vivosmart or my car. As soon as I toggle the BT on the phone it reconnects to everything. Seems to be triggered by starting my car (i.e. the BT car interface becomes available.) Never had either problem with the S4.

Since so many people are having this problem, it's probably phone related and not just an isolated incident.

Yeah this is one of my only remaining complaints about the device. I can't use my Vivosmart for sleep tracking anymore...it disconnects/reconnects way too many times and the persistent vibes wake me up.
So honest question...let's assume it is fixable by software tweaks. What's the fix in that scenario? Reroute more power to bluetooth radio? Other?

Well I've seen a lot of threads online for other devices where an Android update affected bluetooth range. Obviously there's some sort of software control for this. I'm rooted, and I'm willing to try some things but I don't know where to begin. I'm not an OS / Kernel guy.
i wonder if its what it is connecting to as well as a problem with S6? i have the Motorola Buds headset and it has worked as expected giving me about 100 foot range when talking on it. i also have a 2013 Ram truck with Uconnect and have not had any issues and it connects right away and reads my text etc.. as it was doing with my Note 3 and ATIV.
i havent tried other devices but have a few like a speaker and will see as i use them if i have issues.
Haven't messed with Bluetooth that much on this phone, but I think wifi is a bit weak

I've had Bluetooth issues. Seems really short range.
Wifi is about the same as my LG G2, but BT is about half as far. I used to be able to get around 15m at work (lots of shelving) but now I'm lucky to get 5m before hearing static and starting to cut out. Sucks because BT is my main source of music at work.
Anybody had better luck after applying the new ota?

Bluetooth woes

Has anyone experienced issues with Bluetooth devices? I have 2 devices (that are somewhat obscure) that I'm having problems with. First, what does work:
1) Beats Wireless Headphones
2) Bluetooth in my car
3) Unify Roverbeats (For bluetooth via A/V receiver that doesn't have it built-in.
4) Fitbit Surge (Had a little trouble getting it paired initially, but it's been fine since.)
The two items I'm having the trouble with are:
1) Omron 7 Series Wrist (BP654) Blood pressure cuff.
2) Vicks SmartTemp Bluetooth thermometer.
I have gotten both to pair, though it seems to be hit and miss. Once I need to actually use them, though, I'm having little to no success in getting the phone to see them. Unfortunately, I have to take both my BP and Temp every 3 hours (due to recently diagnosed, extremely rare immune system disorder.) This would be a deal-break for me, with the Blu Pure XL, it I didn't have 2 other android tablets I can use. However, I'd sure like to have these working on the phone! (BTW, they all worked seamlessly on my LG G4.)
Has anyone else experienced bluetooth issues with the Pure XL?
More Bluetooth problems....
The Bluetooth problems I mentioned earlier have only worsened. My car sometimes will, sometimes won't connect. The surge connects 90% of the time. Everything else is touch and go, with my BP Cuff only connecting once (during the pairing sequence.) Also, when selecting "un-pair" on any device already paired almost never un-pairs it. I usually have to reboot, then try again to actually get it to un-pair.
Aside from the Bluetooth issues, I've not really encountered anything else that is a show-stopper. I'd like to have Android pay, but it's not a necessity. I want root more (which disables Android pay anyway.)

I've only paired a Metawatch so far but no issues. I keep forgetting to sync it to my car. I'd say the connection with the XL is better than with my M9, which dropped/reconnected randomly.
So far it seems to work fine with my car but when I use it with moto x sol deck it starts breaking up after 15-20 minutes. The only way to fix it is to turn on and off bluetooth.
Pure XL bluetooth serious problem
I have a Pure XL also, originally i only had problems occasionally with playing media through my LG Tone+ headphones. then i also tried connecting my Fitbit Charge HR it would shut down the bluetooth and lock the bluetooth off. i tried uninstalling the fitbit app and only running the headphones and the bluetooth ended up locking up. when i go to the bluetooth settings it shows it as constantly turning off and turning on. i cant stop it. tried rebooting. and also tried turning off and leaving off for awhile and still when i turn it back on it is still locked up.
Issues with jawbone up3, screwed up bad
Also having issues maintaining a sync without a reboot. In my wild attempts to fix this issue I ended up uninstalling Bluetooth Share.... Would any of you fine gentlemen be kind enough to post a copy of the apk from /system/bluetooth for me?

I only use Bluetooth for me FM transmitter in my car.... I never seem to have any problems at all as far as connection and playing music/sounds.... But the hands-free doesn't seem to work.... I can hear them but they can't really hear me very well.... I just put it off to the mic on the FM transmitter....
Just got my blu pure xl today and Bluetooth sucks, its not much better than my blu vivo air. Signal cuts off only being like 5 feet from the phone using my brand new jbl reflect mini Bluetooth earbuds. Hooked to my 4 year old kindle fire hd left on my second floor I was still getting reception in my basement. I'm so pissed I thought that this specked out phone would have good Bluetooth reception but nope ****ty. Blu/gionee needs to start putting way better Bluetooth transmitters in there phones.
I've got to reboot my phone several times a day to keep synced with my runtastic orbit. definitely the phone, had no issues with my LG. Its a nuisance, not a major issue.
Bluetooth woes followed by total meltdown!
After all of my initial issues with Bluetooth on my pure XL, I put a Samsung 200 GB MicroSD card in. It worked for a while, but I think I somehow damaged the card moving it in and out of the phone. Finally, I left the phone charging with card inserted. After an hour or two I came back to get it and it was fire hot...so hot that the plastic back cover had started to melt right below the memory card slot. After it cooled down I removed the SD card. The went on to work half the time, but eventually completely died. I contacted BLU and they sent me an RMA, so I sent the phone to them. I figured they would come back and say the phone was not covered anymore because I had the TWRP recovery and root installed. However, after they received the phone, I got an email with tracking number on the return to me. They ended up sending a completely new phone (off the shelf with all the goodies included.)
Since the new one has been back, and I got the march update, I haven't had any Bluetooth issues save 1: it won't connect to my Denon AVR receiver's Bluetooth mode. Everything else that I listed at the start of the thread is all working correctly now. Every once in a while I have to do a reboot to reset it, but it's way better than it had been!
BLUETOOTH CLICKING NOISE (handsfree)
Is anyone having issues with when using their BLU Pure XL in the car when using handsfree? I have an issue when about 1 minute into the phone call, the person I am talking to hears a loud click every 2 seconds and will not stop until I turn off the bluetooth or put on speaker. If i switch back to bluetooth, same thing happens. The longest I've gone on a call is probably 4 minutes before it started to happen. If i hang up and call the person back on bluetooth, same thing happens.
Anyone has a solution with this as its so bad that I am considering buying a new phone because of this issue!
Thanks

Bluetooth issues

I pretty much love this phone. It would be my ideal device if it had double-tap-to-wake. As it is, I could almost learn to live with using the fingerprint scanner (which I avoid using on all of my other phones) to unlock, but I finally encountered a deal breaker.
I have had all kinds of bluetooth issues. I have a lot of connected devices and I've been encountering the following:
Gear S3 constantly disconnects (even when it's really close to the phone)
Fitbit will not sync
Car Stereo Bluetooth profile deleted itself
AirPods break up, have static, or completely cut out
Here's the thing. I went back to my V20 and I don't have any of these issues. The Fitbit always syncs, the AirPods work flawlessly, the Gear S3 NEVER disconnects, and my car stereo has never disconnected. I have to believe it's a bluetooth stack issue. Perhaps the proprietary processor is to blame. But with all of the bluetooth devices I use on a daily basis, I can't live with this.
I really want to keep the phone, but I think I'm going to have to return it. That sucks because there's nothing else really like it on the market for me. But after all of the testing I've done, I can't draw any other conclusion. Maybe a software update might fix it in the future, but I can't take that chance.
I'm sure some of you will chime in and say "I'm not having any of these issues". That's great. I'm fairly certain you don't have the exact same devices/combination I've listed here. The fact is, my currently daily setup does not mesh with this phone. I still have my Mate 8, but I haven't tested this combination of devices with it yet.
I also have a big issue with this phone's Bluetooth. I can't pair it with a 2014 Pajero. Any other phone works perfect when paired with the car but this one cannot even pair. I always get "pairing failed".
I tried every oprtion and pairing application and still no success.
I know mate 9 has bluetooth 4.2 but it should be backward compatible.
Anyone has a solution or similar issue?
I wonder what firmware version your mate is on.
I'm running MHA-L29C432B138 and I have no problems with my Gear S3, nor with my Mazda bluetooth hookup.
Yeap, latest B138 version.
Gear S3 is fine. Only issue is the car connection
B138 here.
Won't connect to my 451 Bosch Highline car radio (they can't even see each other).
Connects fine to my laptops (Win & MacOS), BT speakers and Xiaomi Roidmi.

I have the U.S. unlocked model. So, unless there's something specific about the firmware on that model, I don't know what to tell you. I have tested this repeatedly with all of my Bluetooth devices. Nothing works as it should, especially compared to my other phones. It would be interesting to see if I have the same issues on the Europe firmware, but I'm not flashing it to find out.
This bluetooth seems to be issue with this phone, does anyone know if this is something huewei is working on to fix or its an android issue ?
I hate to be the guy that says "mine works blah blah blah" but I've got multiple devices connected through Bluetooth and have yet to have an issue on any of them. 2 Ford vehicles running Android auto, 3 Bluetooth speakers and a set of Bluetooth headphones.
With that said, I wonder if your actual device is faulty. Has anyone with the issues done a factory reset? If so I'd be contacting Huawei support.

I am wondering if the manufacturer is aware of the issue or not but to me it seems more of a Android nogut issue than anything else
I have the same issue. The Mate 9 takes about 3 minutes to pair with my car where my LGV10 automatically did it within seconds. It also does not seem capable of handling being paired with multiple Bluetooth devices at the same time. It has to be disconnected from one and wait to pair with the next one. For cars, I have tried it with both a Tesla and a Jeep GC and the I have the same problem.

It's interesting and frustrating how different people have different experiences.
As you'll see from my sig area, I am on US version, with 183 firmware. Interesting too, I had first tried a V20, and left it because of BT issues. As you are probably expecting to hear given my intro statement, I am not having BT issues. But, I am on different phone and firmware from most posts here.
I've only had my phone a couple weeks. When I received it it was on 138, and the GPS didn't work at all. Was about to box it back up and send back, but then checked, and had the update. After update, it's been great for me so far.
I'm not sure how different the 138 is from my US phone and yours...but a common thread for problems seems to be (based on this thread) is 138.

Android Auto Freezes: Happens with Pixel 3 but not Pixel 2?

I have a fairly new Android Auto headunit (Kenwood DDX9903s) running the latest firmware available that was released in August. I've been running this headunit with my Pixel 2 for almost a year and it works perfectly. Now I've moved over to a Pixel 3 and it refuses to work. My connection sequence is proper because it connects successfully every single time, launches AA, and makes it to the home screen. Sometimes it will even play 30 seconds of music too but then it will freeze and all playback or navigation stops entirely. It should be noted that I'm not having this issue on the stock headunit in my VW Golf R with Android Auto.
I want to be very clear, the headunit is still fine. If I hit the menu button it will take me to the root menu of the headunit where I can select other playback sources including radio. It is Android Auto that freezes and completely locks up. Only way to get out of that is to unplug it.
I've tried clearing cache/storage on the Android Auto app and also forgetting the device in the Bluetooth settings but nothing seems to help.
AA has been a mess for a few months. When I still had my Pixel 2 XL would crash or freeze every few minutes while driving and using Maps + Navigation. It got a little better after a few app updates more recently, but still crashed out on my occasionally. The P3XL is doing same/similar, but seems more related to the memory management issues.
I only have one head unit to test on (stock Chevy MyLink) so I can't see if it happens on other units or not..

That's what I find interesting. My stock unit in my VW Golf R seems to be fine with it. However, the aftermarket Kenwood is a bit pickier I suppose. And again, the Pixel2 operated flawlessly. Even on Android Pie. The only difference is the phone.
On my 2016 VW GTI Android auto seems to be a bit buggy with this device. It worked fairly well with my Samsung Galaxy S8. Usually the audio from the radio will duck (become quiet) when Google maps is giving directions to turn or something but now the audio for my radio seems to be ducked even when there are no voice prompts. Annoying.

Good call. I actually have that same problem on the Golf too. It's like the audio ducks and then sticks that way. Only way I've found to fix that is to unplug and then plug it back in.

I've had various audio ducking issues in the past, but it's pretty rare. Mine is usually more like I trigger Assistant and audio doesn't duck, so they're both really loud.
I've just go a Pixel 3 and tried to connect to my Audi (A4 B9) but had the same issue. It connects for a bit then just stops working. It loses its connection to the car. My Pixel 2 works without problems.

Just a quick chime in, not one issue yet, AA on a 2017 Chevy Volt with my pixel 3 standard. Had lots of issues with my previous s7 edge.
I'm having a issue too. I'm thinking it's got to do with the amp output on the head unit. I have a pioneer and it's got a 5v 1.5amp output.
Here is what is happening to it
You might have a point. My phone didn't charge when plugged in to my Audi.
That's worrying. I hope it's not a Pixel 3 hardware issue.

I hope not too but I think I'm on to something. I noticed the power output on the Phone charger plug says 5v 3a
and 9v 2a so it's above my current head unit which is 1.5amp
My wife has a Renault and my phone works fine in her car so I'm thinking she has dual power output and all the people not having issues have either dual power output or there is at 2amp and above.

I am going to do some more searching into this error. Im concerned it is a hardware error but it's still to early too say as I want to look into other devices like the pixel 2 and Samsung s8/9 which I have friends with those devices. They all support fast charging and want to see what there charging specs are. I have read previous comments people didn't have the issue with there pixel 2 so when I get a chance I will test if one works with my car and I will check with a multimeter what my USB port is actually outputting.
If anyone has charging specs for those devices could you please post them.
Thanks
We are not alone.

I have Kenwood DNX995S and my Pixel 3 connects fine and functions as it should. And actually that was one of the reasons I switched to Pixel 3 from S9+. Wireless Android Auto is awesome.
Updated to November security patch, it take a bit longer before AA close but it still close.
I've got the impression it is when I have maps and music running, just like if it can handle many apps at the same time

Do your airpods work well with your Pixel? Mine don't

I've had my airpods for over a year and since the beginning I've had a bad experience with them when using them with my Pixel. One consistent problem is that I fairly regularly have to unpair the airpods from my Pixel and then repair them to get them to connect. The biggest problem, however, is that when I put the airpods back in their charging case they almost always remain connected to my Pixel. I didn't realize this for the longest time but this seemed to be killing their charge. Does anyone have this problem?
airpods..
The AirPods will not support features like automatic disconnection after taking out the headphones or double tapping if it is paired with a non-Apple device though by default
now that said the airpods can connect to 2 things at one like an iphone and an apple watch at the same time this is why you see them stays conncted on your phone it did the same with my smart tv and my pixel 3 which was weird to me hearing my phone ring while watching tv with the airpods ... anyway there is a way to counter that .. just download the airbattery app on the playstore
this app will bringing pretty much all functions avilable with ios including disconnecting em when take em.out of your ears or when you put em in their case as well as automatic discovery when you open the case and the google assistant as well as spotify options note that you ll need to keep the app on all time or re-run it everytime
Yeah, I've had "AirBattery" installed for a while and it didn't make a difference. I got a Pixel 3 a few weeks ago so I don't know if I still have the issue with my Pixel 3.
