Best smartphone for up to $100 on ebay? Both new and used? - General Questions and Answers

Hey I like to try different phones and always looking for the next best deal and a gadget to mess around with.
Using ebay, and if you had $100 (or less) to spend, what are some of the best phones you can get?
Here's a few smartphones I can think of that are pretty good for about $100.
HTC 10, Google Pixel 2, Blu Vivo XI+, Samsung S7, Moto G7, LG G7 ThinQ (but a nice clean one is $140, hard to find a good one for $100, might have cracks).

Forget about eBay, Swappa.com is a better medium for buying used devices.

I've used ebay for many of my devices with no issues over the years.

I only know about Samsung s7, and I used Ebay too from time to time, all good for me.

S7 looks like it might be the winner, because you can get it for $100, the LG G7 is more specs but it is more money for a clean one.

I looked at that site, the Samsung S8 was more expensive there than ebay by about $20.

But, with eBay, you take a chance on what you actually get. Many people have bought phones on ebay and ended up getting screwed. Hence, my warning, forget about ebay when it comes to buying phones.

You're always taking a chance with what you get even when you go to the store to buy groceries, you won't know what's in the box until you get home and open it.
So how is this other site better? You have failed to explain the difference.

Huh, we are talking about two different things.
In this scenario, the chance I'm talking about is whether the device you get is actually the device you paid for or whether it actually works or has a valid IMEI number. Plus, phones cost considerably more than any item that you could possibly buy at a grocery store. If you buy a grocery that you aren't satisfied with, how much have you lost on that item? A few dollars? Also, I'm pretty sure that when you buy something at the grocery store, you know what you are getting because it is right there in front of you to visually and physically inspect, plus, when you open it, it contains exactly what it says it is, whether you find it satisfying or not is a different story altogether.
What you are saying is no comparison to what I'm talking about.

Android device as a PMP?

Anyone got a suggestion on some good android phones I could look up ebay/craigslist to use as a PMP?
My budget is $100 or so, and I realize I won't get top of the line, but used is fine.
A used Optimus One on various prepaids seems to go for $40-$50, so I'm hoping for something that has a tad better spec.
Pick up a used vibrant and enjoy awesome sound quality with a voodoo sound kernel.. Can be bought for like 125 if you catch a deal.

There's a Samsung Galaxy media player...but it's a bit pricier.
Does it have to be a phone?
Why not just buy a PMP? Where's the necessity that it be Android?
If you looked hard enough, you could probably find a Philips for that price, especially if you're willing to buy used.
But my thoughts are, well, if it doesn't need phoning capabilities, you could probably get more GB for your buck.

You would think, but it's not true. Most MP3 players in the $50 dollar range suck.
Also the galaxy players are, as you saw - pricey. I'm looking for something cheap.
And I want it to be an android because I have a galaxy nexus, so I own paid apps that I could use on it as well.
I found a galaxy S for $65 on craigslist, seems like a pretty good deal as long the phone isn't in terrible condition.

Sounds like you could just use your Nex, but instead you'll then be carrying around a lot of extra functionality (carrying a Nexus around to be used as a phone/surfer and another Andy as a PMP), but I'm not one to judge. To each his own. If it were me, I'd buy another battery for the Nex and use the sh*t out of that! The PPI-count on that thing is sensational!!
An HTC HD2 may be just the device for you, but scoring one for a C-note will be a challange, I'd bet. Hack Android onto it, and BAAAAMMM!!
don't get htc, the audio sucks, even on beats models
(sucks in a comparative sense, not subjective)

Yes I realize my Nexus is more than capable
I'm looking for a cheap alternative mostly because I will be abusing it more and I want to keep my expensive phone pristine.

The sound on the HD2 sucks. Even with decent headphones. It's not bad over BT stereo, though, considering how bad BT stereo is to begin with. I'm not really an Apple fan, but the iPod Classics have a tremendous sound and enormous capacity. I use a 160GB iPod to tote around a chunk of my collection. The built in EQ is pretty handy as well. You can pick them up used for less than $100 also.
Well I picked up a bootlooping galaxy S for $40. Hopefully I can get it working
The stock recovery was corrupted so the volume keys weren't working.
Oh yeh, got me a working galaxy S! Sure beats any $40 PMP out there!

I just got this phone yesterday and I love it. imo I think the one x looks better but I love how compact this phone is for how big the screen is. cant go wrong that. as far as im concerned the one x+ still isn't too much of an upgrade besides its hd screen
I think you can't go wrong with either. The One X does feel good and solid and the bigger screen is awesome too. But the One S is so thin and sexy; even with a case. I went back to stock for the new update and this thing is even faster.
In my opinion, the only reason somebody would get a One X is because of the bigger screen. Even though the One is is marketed below the One X, it certainly does not feel or operate like it.
I don't think there will be a One S+. The way I see it, the One X+ was a small bump that gave the US a non-LTE but Tegra3 version. If you want the big screen, I would wait, but I'm really happy with the One S for the already stated reasons.
These can be found for $250 on craigslist. Buy it now sell it later without losing a dime.

I purchase both my Nexus One and my Nexus S on craigslist. Its up to the buyer to make sure they don't get scammed. I take someone with me so I don't get robbed/jumped and I make sure the phone is working and I can make a call before money is even shown. Craigslist is a wonderful place to get stuff. The only people that get scammed on there are the gullible ones.

I just got a new one from craigslist a couple days ago, nothing wrong with getting stuff off of CL.. especially since phones come with a 1 year manufacture warranty if there is a issue with it (besides cracked screens).
Just bought HTC One S from a "nice" dude I found on Craigslist. The guy apparently works for T-Mobile, and we completed the transaction at a T-Mobile store. I paid $275 for a brand new HTC One S. I wanted a Galaxy S3 originally but getting a One S for around 60% of a GS3 price feels good. It's a good phone for the price for sure.
HTC One S is a great phone, if you enjoy compacted efficiency.
This phone is great IMO it all comes down to what you like, go on YouTube watch some reviews and see what you think.

You can always rendezvous with the craiglist seller in a bank or ATM machines as there are always camera's there and you can verify the phone is legit and then get the money from the ATM and that way if you ever have to file a complaint, you will have the time and hopefully the camera captured you and the seller doing the transaction in the bank lobby

As much as this Craigs list thing is hijacking the thread I suppose I'll participate..Just meet inside a McDonald's. Public, cameras, plenty to choose from. But always, always put your SIM and micro sd in and check all functions first.

Looking for something cheap and moddable.
You could look into grabbing yourself a used Xperia X10, or maybe a Motorola Droid 1.

Go to walmart. They have cheap no contract phones. Android phones are over 50$ though.
Please click thanks if I helped.

Most of the the cheap no contract phones will have little to no developer support. You will probably be able to root it, but don't expect any ROMs. Alternatively you could get an older phone for $50 that was once more popular and had developer support. As mentioned above, the Droid 1 comes to mind, they are all over ebay for less than $50 and there are tons of ROMs out there for it.
man i bought a fusion 2 from at&t and i still have no support on this
Why dont you look on ebay iv seen xperia x10s and x8s go cheap on there or save up abit more and get a cheap galaxy s2 .
Click thanx if i helped you

If you're very lucky, you might be able to find a Nexus One at around that price - a fixer-upper for that, sure, though the good condition ones seem to be going for more like $75+.
The S2 is still a good phone, but will also likely go over budget as well - there are some good "fixer-upper" deals, again, on eBay - phones that need a new screen but are otherwise okay (just check and make sure that model can have just glass replaced since a digitizer would be expensive).
What are you looking for ? What kind of performance do you expect ?
I've seen Samsung Captivate's on eBay go for less than $50 but they weren't in the best condition. You get what you pay for. Although, I recently scored. I bought an S2 for $95 that was soft bricked and I was able to pull it out.

Can't decide what phone to get next

So I have a Galaxy S4 I've had for a year (before that I had the S3) with Verizon and I'm really tired of this locked bootloader crap. I'm kind of on a budget, so I could use some advice.
I really just want a phone that's as close to stock as possible and can be easily rooted/flashed. So, ideally a Nexus 5 or 6. I also saw HTC phones and Motorola phones on Verizon's web site, but I don't know if those phones are locked or not.
I would like to trade in my old phone and sign up for a contact as leverage, as I can't afford paying too much. Any advice would be appreciated.
On a budget, get a used phone from last year off eBay or here on Swappa, and you won't even have to re-up your contract. HTC M7, LG G2, Moto X (especially Developer Edition), one of the Droids. They should all be rootable, but I can't speak individually for unlocked bootloaders.

Thanks for the recommendation I'll check it out. I'm most interested in Nexus, HTC, LG, or Moto. Would I be able to trade in my S4 for some value?
I suggest you to go for HTC M8. This device is really stylish.
This device
1. Feels nicer to hold.
2. Knock on feature.
3. seems faster
4. Takes a micro sd card.

+1 for OnePlus One, great phone for cheap price.
People say the nexus has terrible battery life, so accordong to this, I wouldn't recommend you to buy one. I'd recommend you to buy a moto g though, since it's actually a smaller version of a nexus, and allegedly has better battery life, but more of that I'd recommend either an htc one m8 or an lg g3, if your wallet can handle the price. Now, about off-contract, I'd suggest the oneplus one, because it's a flagship killer and it's relatively cheap, as said above.
I recommend the LG G3...the bootloader can be sort of unlocked via Bump, but the LG Rom is pretty close to stock, doesnt add too much extras. It has a great camera and awesome screen, SD Card and removable 3000mAh battery. It's a nice phone! I will agree that Nexus phones have very poor battery life, but you can install just about anything on them in terms of ROMs. If sticking with GSM, the OnePlus One is nice too but I'm not sure where that company is going with CyanogenMod and OnePlus on the fritz. They will probably have to develop their own rom in the future, unless you want to load the CyanogenMod version, which you can do that too. Moto X phones are good, battery life would still be my concern, but its as close as stock as you can get besides nexus.
I'm probably going to look at the MotoX or droid Turbo.. I'll check out the OPO. I guess I have some hw to do. I'm using Verizon's edge plan, and I don't think that's a traditional contract. I also need to look at and see what kind of development is going on for each of these devices.
People mentioned eBay and Amazon.. Are there any sites that are specifically for buying/trading used phones?

The G3 does look nice spec wise and software, to a point, will probably still root and flash a custom recovery if available. I plan on purchasing a phone through Swappa, again, which is where I got my S4 on MDK so I could get rid of touchwiz. The Turbo looks great but idk seems a bit expensive to purchase used or outright. S4 has decent HW and with no more touchwiz is much more usable. I would recommend Swappa to anyone looking to purchase a used phone or off contract phone.

I'd recommend both the LG G3 and the Moto G. Both in your price range, but still high-end-ish, with plenty of ROMs, support, and modding here on XDA.
