Haptics? - Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra Questions & Answers

Any better than the S20? I read somewhere a new haptic engine. Cheers

Yeah, the vibration / haptic engine is very strong.

I cannot compare directly, but I do think it's fantastic on this phone!

It's much much better compared to note 10 plus for sure.

Samsung haptic feedback compared to everybody else

I found no other thread discussing this subject so I thought I'd ask if anyone else wondered why the Samsung vibration/haptic feedback feeling is so different to all the other manufacturers. I am not saying one haptic feedback style is bad and the other good, it is just different, but I have to admit that I prefer the Samsung vibration style.
To give an example, I migrated from a Galaxy S2 to a Nexus 4 and I immediately noticed the change in vibration style. On the S2 the vibration has a higher frequency, lower amplitude and shorter duration resulting in a distinct and precise feedback. On the N4 the vibration takes some time to ramp-up and the vibration has a lower frequency and higher amplitude (this is actually controlled via the kernel), which although it gives out a more powerful overall vibration, it feels that the vibration kick arrives too late due to the ramp-up duration.
So far I have tested this on the following phones:
Samsung-style vibration:
- Samsung Galaxy S2
- Samsung Galaxy S3
- Samsung Galaxy S4
- Samsung Galaxy S4 Active
- Samsung Galaxy S5
Non-Samsung-style vibration:
- HTC One X
- HTC One M7
- LG Nexus 4
- LG Nexus 5 D821
- Sony Xperia Z1
- Sony Xperia Z2
I am trying to find out what makes the Samsung-style vibration different and unique, as both Samsung and the other manufacturers use the same linear oscillating vibrator motor. One thing I noticed is that all Samsung phones use a vibrator motor that is bound directly to the screen assembly, while the other manufacturers attach the vibrator motor to the back of the case or frame, which may impact the haptinc feedback you get in the finger touching the screen.
Another way to distinguish between the two vibration/haptic feedback styles that I have found is to place your phone on a flat surface (not your hand) and press the back button. On Samsung phones you will feel a distinct feedback in your finger, while on other phones you will not feel anything in your finger.
Does anyone know how we could replicate the Samsung-style haptic feedback on other phones?
So, this is the first post I found about this topic, and I agree with that perception. In my opinion, the samsung haptic feedback makes them feel "sophisticated" because the delicacy, and the others feel like vibration from a game controller . I have a Z Ultra, which I have paid a good buck, but the vibration feels somewhat cheap... If the vibrators where the same I think is possible to do some tests and try to replicate the effect. I hope for dev attention here.

Anyone swapped his Note 4 to S6?

Hi!
I want to know if anyone had a Note 4 and switched to S6?
If yes how do you find this new phone compared to N4?
-Screen
-Camera
-UI
-In hand feelings
-Audio quality
Thanks

-Screen - The screen is a lot better, but not like worlds better. Its crisper and brighter, in direct sunlight it is a night and day difference. They are both the best you can get. I had some color shifting issues on my Note 4 that not everyone had when looked at from even a slight angle. They are both great though.
-Camera - Again they are both good, but the S6 is great. The S6 focuses more accurate and faster and low light is less muddy. I perfer straight noise over that muddy night shot the Note 3 - Note 4 do, its awful. The double tap to camera is perfect.
-UI - Not even close. The S6 is so much cleaner and better, especially after the Note 4 got Lollipop. The 5.0 update on existing devices leaves a lot to be desired. If there was 1 reason to upgrade its this.
-In hand feelings - Totally and completely by person, each person feels it differently. FWIW the Note 4 feels masculine whereas the S6 feels beautiful.
-Audio quality - I had the Snapdragon Note 4 and the S6 blows it away with its Wolfson chip in everything but loudness. The Note 4 gets insanely loud, the S6 is a little quieter, but the quality is a little better.
Thanks

The Note 4 was just fine in direct sunlight. As you said, auto brightness with +5 allowed for good viewing on even the sunniest days. But apparently the S6 is even better.
I tried the S6 today in a fast way (forbidden to get further than setup menus) the phone really feel high class, though I didn't feel the text the be sharper than N4, I even felt the N4 to be easiest to read, I had to push the font size to medium-big
But again I only had 3 minutes to try it, let's hope he official Samsung showroom will have it next week so I can try it head to head with the N4 indepth

Please share your thoughts if coming from a note 8.

Can those who have come from a note 8,please share your thoughts and views, on what you miss, performance wise etc, now that you are using the pixel 2 thanks.
Miss the ability to use themes and select a different font. And nothing can beat the Samsung OLED panels! I don't miss the S-Pen that much though!
In short, the Note 8 is crammed with features and sometimes can come in the way of your working. I find the Pixels smoother to work with and just allow me to get what I need done. I probably wasn't the right demographic for the Note 8 anyway!

I have to agree here. I have a Note 8 review unit currently, and I haven't been able to put my Pixel 2 down since getting it. The camera is much better, and aside from a few nuances, I'm overall very happy with my choice.
I'm almost ready to upgrade and currently using an S7 edge. I torn between the Note 8 and either of the Pixel's did dropping in screen size take time to adjust?

I was honestly torn between the S8, Note 8, and Pixel 2. I think they're all great devices with pros and cons, and a great deal just depends upon personal taste. I'd highly recommend walking into a Best Buy or other store with these models on display, and take some time to play around with them.
One thing I will admit regarding the Note 8 is how surprised I was with its size. The Note 8 certainly has a large display, but I didn't find the device to be as unwieldy as I had expected. I also found the fingerprint reader to be far easier to use than I had assumed (I'm right-handed, and hold the devices with my left hand).
My only concern is how the Note 8 would feel in a pocket all day. I already have a great tablet that I use all the time (Kindle Fire HDX), so my phone is simply my "Go everywhere with me at all times device". I'd certainly be interested to hear from others how it feels with constant carry in pants or coat pockets, but IMHO I imagine the Pixel 2 being far easier to have on oneself 24/7 as opposed to a Note 8.
Substratum themes work on Pixel 2

For me personally the note 8,has been the fastest phone I have ever used. I know others don't have much care about the headphone jack, but for me it's just convinient to have. I listen to a lot of music, play games and watch movies on my phone so not having the headphone jack is a deal breaker for me.
I have been torn as well.
I wanted Pixel XL but it's screen issues put me off. Pixel 2 small big bezels, wasn't sure coming from 6p.
Ordered S8...
Stunned with the display but that's about it... Camera - front crap so much worse than 6p, rear - could capture nice pic but 6p was much more reliable in this matter.
Overall smoothness wasn't somehow great, still full of Samsung crap,. Fingerprint scanner is a joke, location, accuracy and speed.
After one day of owning it I have sent it back
...
And bought Pixel 2!
What an amazing experience. Super smooth, amazing camera, great display but tad small although appreciate one handed use so much!
Speakers could have some more bass.
You can't go wrong with Pixel. Great phone;

Hmm if the pixel is much smoother then it's definitely out of this world. I have found my note 8,to be very smooth as for the first time ever I have not bothered installing a custom kernel or any kernel tweaking app. I am using it stock , just rooted but it's been great. Maybe one more point is the fact that mine is the Exynos version so it might help explain why it's been performing great. I am however always on the lookout for a fast phone so might just try the pixels.

OP5T vs OP6 Comparison Thread

For those of you who are coming from the OnePlus 5T and have had a little time to use your 6, how are you ranking the differences between the two phones? Let's get a comparison thread going.
Here are some sample comparisons to mention.
Which is brighter in direct sunlight?
Which has a stronger/easier to notice notification LED?
Which has stronger notification vibration?
Which has louder speaker?
Which is easier to use one-handed?
Which has better colors in the display?
Which camera do you prefer (low light vs. daylight)?
Which has better battery life?
Which seems more durable against scratches?
Which looks more "premium" or nicer to you?
Which do you prefer overall?
Which seems "faster" in daily use?
Which gets "hotter" to touch with heavy use?
Which alert slider is easier to adjust?
Which has better WiFi performance.
Which has better 4G/LTE performance.
Which has better cellular call reception/audio quality.
Here are some comparisons I found on the web:

I sold my 5T a while back but I will do my best by going off memory...
- The 6 definitely seems brighter in sunlight
- LED seems very dim on the 6, maybe dimmer than the 5T (I don't use it anyway so a non-issue for me)
- Vibration seems about the same and having the 2XL as well, both vibration motors are inferior to the 2XL
- Speaker seems louder and more clear on the 6
- Both feel the same with one-handed use
- Can't recall the colours on the 5T, but the 6's look amazing! Very vibrant
- Don't take too many low light shots, so daylight for sure
- 5T gave me poor battery life; I was getting 8-9 SOT on my 5, then about 4-5 SOT on the 5T. On my 6, I'm easily getting 6-7 SOT!
- Scratches I cannot say much on as I use a case and screen protector on all my phones from day 1
- The glass definitely makes the 6 feel more premium
- Overall, I prefer the 6
- The 6 seems a lot faster than the 5T; it's even outperforming my 2XL in things like app launch speeds!
- The 5T never got noticabley hot and the 6 follows that trend
- Alert slider is fairly easy to adjust on both phones, however I do prefer the new placement on the 6, since I can now adjust with my thumb

Oneplus 5t and Oneplus 6 are the same company and both are very good smartphone. Nevertheless I think the design of OnePlus 5T looks better than One Plus 6, and there is very little difference between the new model and the old model.

@op Can you add network/modem LTE performance comparison as well? For who aren't familiar 835 packs X16 whereas 845 packs most powerful X20 modem with 4 antennas, which should considerably improve Network reception and performance.. Any tests over this would be very useful!

One plus 7pro vibration and haptic feedback weak?

I saw a demo version of the phone in a store and the vibration and haptic feedback was even weaker than my old One Plus 5.
I am waiting to buy the Nebula Blue on the 28th of this month but my only reason for upgrading was the weak vibration in the OnePlus 5. But if the One Plus 7 vibration is so weak, doesn't make send for me to upgrade now. Will appreciate all comments, thanks.
compared to my huawei mate 10 pro, the op 7 pro is stronger.
Mines pretty damn strong. Can also up the vibration in settings to tune to your need. If that's not enough, custom kernels exist for a reason
I had the OnePlus 5 and still have the 6 and the vibration in the 7pro is SIGNIFICANTLY stronger then either of those 2 phones. I wouldn't be able to even hear the 5 or 6 vintage on the table next to me. I can hear the 7pro vibrate across the room with the TV on. I would also not feel the vibration in the front pocket of my khakis in the 2 permits phones but I never miss email/text/calls with the 7pro.
The vibration in the 7pro is definitely a win.
It's very strong when set to Strong!
The One Plus rep tried every setting in the book to match the vibration of my One Plus 5 but couldn't. Finally he told me the haptic feedback is only evident whilst playing games like Pubg etc. I almost gave up on the idea of buying the phone because of weak vibration. Thanks for your replies, everyone.

Between the 5 and the 6 is there a improvement. I was also considering the One Plus 7 instead of the Pro.

It's the same exact motor. Flar2 who does EX Kernel wasn't able to really increase the vibration much as it was a limit on the motor itself and that was on both the 5 and 6. So it just wasn't a setting like they nurfed the intensity, it was just that the motor was such junk and didn't have the strength to be increased.
Edit:
Just a little evidence, EX Kernel was default vibration sensitivity was set at 49 if I remember and taking it to 100 did nothing for the vibration strength in both the 5 and 6
Thanks for the reply. Now I know what I would get if I buy the 7.

Which one?
The motor is not only stronger, but also much better as it has a wider range of "feel" to the vibrations. Like the Pixel phones have. It's not quite as fully featured as the iPhone's 3D touch, but definitely a huge improvement!

This phone has a different motor and can be increased a lot with a custom kernel. Stock setting is 30% and it can be increased to about 70% before it starts to rattle a bit .

Yeah that's what I said. Try reading again. The OnePlus 5 and 6 have the exact same motor but the 7 pro is SIGNIFICANTLY stronger.
LOL Flar2.. I read again and I think I took the context wrong. I though you were correcting me all good!
Would never know first thing I disable.
But when I was setting up the device, I noticed that it was really strong "one of the reasons I had to disable"
I'd like to increase the haptic vibration on my OP7Pro a little because I really like it. I have it rooted and installed the Kirisakura kernel and Ex kernel manager pro. By default it's set to 30% and I find I'd like it a little stronger, but the next step at 40% rattles the device with the navigation keys so much that you can really hear it.
Is it possible to set it in the middle like 35%? How does everyone else have it?
I also think 35% would be perfect. I am using 40% and I hear a little rattling
I just got my One plus 7pro and can confirm that the vibration and haptic feedback on my old One Plus 5 is stronger than the One plus 7pro. There is a third option in the vibration settings in the One Plus 5 viz "vibrate on tap" and this is missing in the One plus 7pro. Could be because of this. I have both phones side by side and there is no question that the vibration and haptic feedback on the One Plus 5 is stronger.
The change in OnePlus 7 Pro's haptic engine is not only the strength or power, it is the quality
of the engine and how it differs in actual feel, it doesn't fizz anymore, it has a tactile feel to it and
haptic engine itself is a linear engine, not a circular motor like in previous models:
https://9to5google.com/2019/05/09/oneplus-7-pro-vibration-motor/
Right now OnePlus 7 series haptic feel/engine are even better than Pixel 3 and the only phone that has a slightly better haptic/taptic engine, is Apple's iPhone, IMHO.
I think one plus need to enable VIBRATE ON TAP option for the One Plus 7pro
